3-0 out of 5 stars A strong beginning for a gudiebook geared toward Gay travel.
The publication of the guidebook automatically makes it destined for success.Since there are so few guidebooks for Gay travelers, these specialized editions are long overdue and extremely welcome.Futureeditions should include color photographs, brief interviews with local menand women in the various cities, brief commentaries by travelers---listingthe good, the bad, and the 'watch out'!These brief commentaries caninclude the actual experiences of travellers. They can write of who theymet, where, and what transpired. All of course in a friendly and dignified(?) manner. Then too, it would be helpful for the traveller to getspecific addresses of not only the bars, restaurants, and tourist hangouts, but also the spots that are frequented by local gays.Advise the reader ofany friendship clubs or organizations in the various cities.Tell thereader about friendly citizens that are willing to act as guides orinformational services. This is the real world. It's time for SenorCordova to compete with Moon, Lonely Planet, and Fodor's Publications. Hewill definitely get a good share of the market! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Engaging, quirky, beautifully written book
This book put me in mind of Theroux' disappointments with Pacific and other cultures and that writer's despairing take on the seeming inevitability of mankind's baser tendencies.Elegantly written, not at all a guidebook--a fact that may disappoint some--this romp through many beautiful destinations fascinates because of the writer's frequent chafing encounters with fellow expats and local excesses.1-0 out of 5 stars TERRIBLE
This was undoubtedly one of the worst books that I have ever read. The author was pretentious, prissy, nasty toward his "friends" and fellow travelers, and condescending toward what he called "natives".Mainly, though, he was just boring. He simply listed the places he traveled through, along with a litany of complaints about the tour guide, accommodations, and anyone unfortunate enough to have bumped into him.5-0 out of 5 stars Approaching Travel Book Reviews
I read Mr. Champ's book with considerable pleasure.Since I don't travel very extensively because of a basic fear of flying and simple lack of time, I depend on the Jan Morrises, Bruce Chatwins, and Roberts Champs of this world to do much of it for me.I can read in the comfort of my armchair and imaginatively follow their perigrinations about this world of ourse without the discomforts that travel so often entails...Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars No longer worth buying
Like all gay travel guides, the information dates quickly and4-0 out of 5 stars If you love Mexican men, you need to have this book.
Very detailed information about where to go, what to do, and where to meet them.Things do change, so it wouldn't be a complete guide, but it will give you starting points in a lot of places. If you are thinking about exploring places other than large resorts and cities, this book is a nicecompanion for your trip.It was certainly very usuful for me.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good travel guide - Wash DC should get off PC bandwagon
Overall Collins' travel guides are good for quick lookups of gay/gay friendly spots. And he gives HIS OWN OPINION on these places - whether describing them as "seedy", or "uneven", or"mostly old drunks", these are his opinions and his takes on theplaces he's reviewed. The reader from DC needs to get off the gay PCbandwagon and realize, as an author, Collins books are not objective, andhe plainly states so in the introduction. Don't like his take on a place? Then hop on the barstool with your name on it, pal.

5-0 out of 5 stars Usefull
I found this book usefull for my stay in SF.

2-0 out of 5 stars Andrew Collins is ageist
"Fodor's Gay Guide to the USA," written by Andrew Collins, wassuperb, comprehensive, and sensitively written, so when the company decidedto break out some of the individual chapters into separate city guides withadditional material, there was a lot of reason to be hopeful. But consider:at p. 50 of "Fodor's Gay Guide to San Francisco," Collins saysthat that many of SF's gay bars cater "mostly to old drunks." Hethen describes trying to meet someone at one of these bars: "You givehim a quick tap on the shoulder, just to see if anybody is in there. Andcrash! He falls off his bar stool." Later Collins says that there's abar stool in SF with your name on it, and "all you have to do is trynot to fall off it."Read more
