5-0 out of 5 stars great resource - a must have
Definitely worth the $$. This book is an excellent resource for queer women. If you're visiting a new place, it can point you in the right direction. Some of the recommendations in the book are now out of business, so you may want to wait for the 1998 version of this book. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars A little brother to the Spartacus Guide.
This purports to be a comprehensive guide to gay saunas.Interesting illustrations accompany its listings. However, you might as well pay a few bucks more and get the big Spartacus guide (which is published annually and more likely to be current than this guide).

3-0 out of 5 stars OOOPS!This is a guide to GAY saunas!
Imagine my surprise.I thought I had ordered a guide to European saunas--the classy, clean, public saunas enjoyed by men & women together around Europe.Instead, this book is a guide to the gay "sauna culture" of Europe.I will say that it seems to be a very well compiled and useful guide for its purpose.I can't vouch for the accuracy of the data in the book since, for obvious reasons, I didn't try to visit any of the facilities listed. ... Editorial Review

David Tuller traveled to the former Soviet Union expecting to find a still grimly repressive and closeted gay world; he found something quite different: a gay scene certainly unlike its western counterpart in many respects, and yet by no means the iron closet of the Stalinist era. There is plenty going on. Tuller's book serves as a travel guide to gay Russia, full of exotic stories that challenge American notions of sexuality. Find out, for example, the difference between heterosexual women and lesbians who sleep with gay men. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Fraank autobiography describing a varied life.
The subtitle of this autobiography is "Memoirs of People and Places". The author states that he has always been more interested in people than in places. This interest does not preclude him from giving graphicdescriptions of the many countries he has lived in: Iraq, Japan, Morocco,Egypt, Cyprus, Thailand; and also of those he has visited: China, Russia,Sarawak, Sri Lanka, Laos, India, Libya. Being a writer of fiction ( A Touchof the Orient,Uneasy Relations, Doubtful Partners ) he has the novelist'sobserving eye, and his observations are often entertaining. About themanager of a hotel in Baghdad he has written: "Mr. Yousef was a little manwith a boiled-lobster, pock-marked face, and not much hair grew on hissmall head. His blue eyes were close to his podgy, pitted nose, and hisperpetual, twisted smile revealed large yellow teeth. More often than nothe was tipsy, even before lunch . . . He would wobble about the hotel lobbylike a marionette with a few broken strings, smiling inanely. He was notan unpleasant man, in fact he was a kind one . . ." Going up the RajangRiver in Sarawak, he says: " The river was magnificent, powerful, mysterious; mysterious because of the banks shrouded by dark-green jungle,it brown opaqueness, its swift, strong, silent movement, its emptiness.Only rarely did we see another longboat and then it was little more than aspeck hugging the other bank.: The title of the book comes from a hotel inPort Said: "Its name caught my fancy the first time I stayed there in the1940's.My life has been a sort of exchange with the East; an unfair one, perhaps, because I feel I have given less to the East than the East hasgiven to me." Haylock taught English in Baghdad and in Tokyo. He statedthat the happiest time of his life was from 1975 - 1984 when he was back inTokyo "with a well-paid university post, reasonable accommodation, and awonderful Japanese friend". The author is candid about his tastes. Inbetween teaching there were gaps during which he stayed in various lands(Morocco, Cyprus, Portugal) and visited China and the USSR, as it still wasin 1971. In China in 1965, just before the Cultural Revolution, "at theheight of the cult, one might say of the deification of Mao Tse-Tung", hewas in the stern hands of hard-line guides, who constantly poured tediouspropaganda into his unwilling ears. He crossed Siberia by train, havingto share a compartment with a ninety-three-year-old Australian woman, whodied on the way.Her death was wrongly diagnosed as being due to Choleraand Haylock and the other passengers in the carriage were at Sverdlosktaken off the train and confined in an isolation hospital for several days. The author states "for much of my life I have lived in blissful ignorancein the countries I have inhabited. As an expatriateI have escaped theresponsibilities, but not the taxes, which those who properly belong haveto shoulder. I have enjoyed being an escapist". Perhaps the authorwould have written a deeper and less light-hearted book if he had properlybelonged. This frank autobiography describes his life, not of adventure, but a varied one full of amusing encounters and unusual situations. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars BRILLIANT, ENTERTAINING, FULL OF GOOD ADVICE
It is unbelievable how prejudiced people can be about books written by men who travel with paid escorts. This is a fascinating story about Joseph Itiel's visit to Costa Rica.It was written about ten years ago so might be a bit dated.
1-0 out of 5 stars The worst Tourist guide I ever READ!!
As a Costarican I found this book, not only poor in knolodge of our country but terrible misleading the tourist market. I wish nothing happens to any of the people who read this book and try to hired prostitutes in Costa Rica. If this is the case please blame this man in San Francisco not our country. I considered the book sick and really do not contributed to anybodies benefits. I talk to a friend of my in Costa Rica who give an interview to Mr Itiel and he told me that he was very sorry he waisted his time with this man. Costa Rica is beautiful full of nice people who will show you our country, and will make you feel welcome, not because you have some $$ but because in Costa Rica we love people from everywhere. Some of the most beautiful places in Costa Rica is in Manuel Antonio where we have a gay and lesbian resort call Casa Blanca, please if you come to our country meet the people of Costa Rica, not the people of Mr Itiel. I'm ashamed of this book, and I'm gladd I did not espend the money in buying but I read it because someone give to me. As we say in Costa Rica "nos encanta la gente" and Pura vida don't mean nothing an less you conserve your "vida" Life

1-0 out of 5 stars Pura vida is a misleading, inaccurate and incomplete 'guide'
I have traveled several times to Costa Rica and have many acquaintances among native Costa Ricans. Mr. Itiel's book gives an inaccurate picture of life in Costa Rica, and should some unwary reader attempt to follow Mr Itiel's footsteps (in regards to 'hiring' so-called guides) an uncomfortable and potential dangerous outcome may ensue. The maps, Spanish phrases, in the book are incorrect- and evidence either poor knowledge on Mr. Itiel's part or poor effort in proof-reading. The book is extremely short and superficial and ignores many aspects of which Costa Rica isfamous throughout the world. The black and white photos are not very descriptive and do not do justice to the beauty and color in Costa Rica.N. Del Pizzo's chapter was just as superficial as Mr. Itiel's work- it is regretable that she did not evidence/experience much of the 'ambience' of CR- that being the case, somebody who HAD seen the 'woman's side of Costa Rica" should have written that chapter. It would have been more informative.I am very sorry that I WASTED $20 on this book and I strongly urge potential readers NOT to consider it.Thank you,J. A Thomas Test ... Read more
