Frommer Doesn't Deliver For Europe
My partner and I are going to Europe this summer for an extended vacation and were planning on spending a good amount of time in Germany.We were hoping to find a comprehensive guide that would give cultural cues and listing of gay/gay-friendly hotels, clubs, restaurants, etc.We were hoping to find such spots in almost every city were were planning on visiting. Having brought this along for not one but two Europe trips where it wasn't even worth the space it took up in my bag, it's time to retire it to a shelf permanently. Frommer's is trying to capitalize on the success of Fodor's GAY USA books which are pretty informative and well organized. Frommer's offering is too little, too late. Now-a-days there are gay mentions in lots of mainstream travel books. Virgin, the same people who bring you the record company, superstores, etc. also make travel books for major European cities which always include gay bars and gay hoods. Dorling Kindersley may not be gay, but they are hands down superior to any other guide out there and worth every cent. Just grab a Spartacus or look online to find out where the gay areas are, or pick up a gay mag or flyers once you get there. By all means, don't plan on this book giving you anything but a frustrating, jarbled mess of vague maps and bland information.

Limited to a dozen big cities.
Like the description for this book says, there IS more to queer Europe that gay Paris.Unfortunately this book only hits on 7 other countries, so if you're headed anywhere in Scandinavia, forget it.Same with Portugal, Ireland, Switzerland, and a bunch of other European countries.Make sure you're going to one of the Chosen 8, or this book will be worthless. ... Real Tales from Real Life
I have traveled the world for several decades.I would recommend to every gay traveler that he read this book before going to virtually any Third World country. A Gay Man's Sexual Travel Adventures & Erotic Experiences!
Once in a while you read a book where you actually feel the author is having a personal conversation with you as he relives and tells you about his life experiences.You become so absorbed in the story he is telling you that you forget that the present world exists around you.That's the way I felt while reading Joseph Itiel's book about his gay sexual travel adventures and experiences.He reveals the many fascinating, exciting, and erotic sexual experiences he has had with men of different nationalities over the last four decades.He begins with his first sexual experiences in the1950's in NYC and Toronto, and his first foreign adventure to Rishikesh, India, where he became an apprenticed yogi.By taking up yoga he was able to cover up his homosexual activities while living in India.After all, this was the 1950's.This trip was not the wonderful experience he had hoped it would be.It did confirm and teach him, however, that his most satisfying sexual experiences would come from males who were ethnically and culturally different from him and he soon discovered he was also assured a more pleasurable sexual experience when he paid for it.Thus, his life-long positive relationships with male "hustlers", now known as "sex workers", would be established. If you can't go to Paris (or even if you can), read this book!
A delightful book about White and Sorin's life in Paris, with an inevitable undercurrent of sadness, because Sorin is dying. Yet his inability to practice his work as an architect led him to develop the "unique, exuberant drawing style" that illustrates this book.
Parisian anecdotes told with American-style intimacy
I picked up this little book for a return flight from Paris to LA.It looked like perfect plane reading -- short, gossipy, topical.And although it lived up to each of those expectations, the devastation implicit in the book (and explicit at the end) hit hard.The book is not easily forgettable -- and probably no less memorable for the passengers and crew of American Airlines flight 45 who watched me become a sniffling, tear-stained disaster. FABULOUS!!!

Brilliant biography- if you are already a Chatwin fan
I loved this book. I thought it was the best biography I have ever read. But, like shakespeare, I am biased, coming into the reading of it already captivated by Chatwin's writings and personality. Those who are of a similar disposition must read this book, each line is carefully researched and laid out to present the complex facets of Chatwin's life in all its glory.
Flawed biography
My main beef with the book was with its fawning biographer.I felt as if Shakespeare lost his objectivity, and fell under the star power of his subject.While he discusses Chatwin's flaws, he does so with an aspect of fan-worship, which, if one is to believe the biography, was par for the course - everyone fell under his spell.I would hope for better from the biographer - some more real balance, some real critisism. No freaks....Just Balti-MORONS at their best!
Just a quick note....This wonderful visual tool captures many of Baltimore's notorious charachters (including commentary) in a way NO other Baltimore home grown artist could ever come close to. He see's beauty in the obscure and respects those models who respect him. Many photographers take advantage of those who choose to follow the beat of their own drum but not Amos. In my opinion no one in this book is classified as "forgotten." Some models are dead and gone but other models, such as performance artist JeffRey Clagett, persevere and are very grateful to this excellant photographer for including them in his TRIBUTE to the differences that make the locals here "heros" ,in a twisted way, instead of clowns and freaks. To try to lable any of his diverse models is simply missing the whole point. This book is a masterpiece! Buy the book and judge for yourself. You won't be disappointed. For me it is a trip down memory lane and I have yet to see another local photographer pull off such a TRIBUTE!

terribly wrong in parts on Asia
Many mistakes remain in the secions on Asia.Certainly, many venue's information has to be updated.Moreover, imagined bias is printed in the guide.For instance, the guide maintains that in Taiwan the soldiers might be executed because of the charge of homosexuality.It is wrong.Modern Taiwan never executes any gay person, in the military or not.Information in the book is very misleading.ALSO: the current version looks much less appealing than that several years ago.What happened to the publishing house??? ... Queer Japan is an excellent book examining the real lives of gays, lesbians and transsexuals in Japan. I know the editors of the book personally and attended the book opening in Tokyo. I heard the stories of the Japanese women and men whose personal stories are contained in thebook. It is a moving and realistic account of the Japanese people's treatment of transgressors of their mianstream culture. I lived in Japan for 6 years and taught at Gunma Prefectural Women's University with Cheiron (one of the editors); and I know first hand the lives of the lesbian, gay and transsexual people in Japan.
A Voice for those who have been discouraged from speaking
I came across this book three years ago, when I first arrived in Japan. I was reading it just as I was coming to terms with my own homosexuality. It contributed to the opening of my mind, and helped me find courage to come out and start living my life to the fullest. A very interesting and accurate glimpse of Japan

My 4th copy!
