Editorial Review

This handsome reprint of Jorgensen's 1967 memoir makes it abundantly clear how moments of grace can descend on even the most ordinary of lives. When ex-G.I. George Jorgensen went to Copenhagen in the early 1950s to consult experts in sexual deviance, he was afraid they'd simply proclaim him a fairy.A full battery of hormonal and psychological tests revealed that, while he was drawn to men, he was no garden-variety homophile; he was a lady. Keeping the secret from his family, Jorgensen endured a groundbreaking series of operations, finally emerging in November 1952 as a delicately beautiful young woman. "I merely wanted to correct what I considered a misjudgment of Nature," wrote Jorgensen, who died in 1989. No one seeing the photographs included here (many of them new to this edition) can doubt the success of Jorgensen's transformation or wonder too long at the fascination she engendered back home, where a newspaper bought her story for $20,000 and she was proclaimed New York City's Woman of the Year. A stage and screen career soon followed. As Susan Stryker points out in a new introduction, Jorgensen offers a somewhat flattering and selectively abridged account of herself in the autobiography, but no more so than any plucky girl smiling her way through what must have been, at times, a harrowing and lonely journey, but one that she conducted with remarkable dignity. 5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent And Close To Home
This is one of the very few books that I, as a transsexual myself, can relate to.Most of the other transsexual-themed books on the market are about middle aged, married, heterosexual crossdressers who decide on sex reassignment only after years of marriage and a lot of playing dress-up.Nothing for a young, effeminate, transsexual attracted to men to relate to. Christine's story is far more compelling, and far closer to home.
5-0 out of 5 stars Transexualism
I had read this book before.I am a gay male, 48, and i first read it about 15 years ago.I now have a trans-gendered friend.I never understood transexuals until I read Christine Jorgensen's story. Then, I did.She is candid, very forthright, and a good example for everyone.I recommend that anyone who is inquisitive about the subject, first read this book.It is excellent. She was a pioneer, perhaps and American heroine.

4-0 out of 5 stars THE WORLD'S FIRST FAMOUS TRANSEXUAL...
This is a must read book for those interested in gender identity issues, as well as for those who enjoy memoirs. Ms. Jorgensen was the first American to have a sex change operation and undergo such public scrutiny. Though she never intended to have her transformation become public knowledge, it was leaked to the press, and from then on, her life was never the same. In the cultural milieu of the nineteen fifties, Ms. Jorgensen's sex change was big news.Read more

Editorial Review

Billy Tipton was a jazz performer who played in clubs throughout the Midwest for nearly 50 years. Tipton never made the big time as a musician and ended up working as a booking agent in Spokane, Washington. Only with Tipton's death in 1989 was it revealed that the five-times-married father to three boys was biologically female. Diane Wood Middlebrook's biography describes the transformation of Dorothy Tipton, a white Oklahoman who was not allowed to play jazz because she was a girl, into Billy Tipton, a male pianist and bandleader. The author traces the life ofthis itinerant jazz musician over several decades and through changing constructions of gender.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Good information, incorrect analysis
I couldn't tell if the author was ignorant of transgenders, or just prejudiced against the idea of anyone being transgender. While one might cross dress to be able to enter a profession reserved for only one gender, one doesn't live their entire life as the opposite gender just for that reason. All of what we know of Billy Tipton points to him being transgender, and to give equal weight to other theories (lesbian, cross dresser for his job) shows an ignorance of transgenderism.
4-0 out of 5 stars An impressive biography that overcomes scanty documentation
Diane Middlebrook has been blessed with such a fascinating subject for this biography that it would be a poor writer indeed who sapped the story of its interest. Yet the author faces a daunting challenge because so little documentary evidence remains concerning the life of Dorothy/Billy Tipton, especially for the early years. Fortunately, Middlebrook is up to the task, and where she can't provide content she supplies invaluable context for the life of a locally famous jazz singer now known less for his musical talent than for a closeted, transgendered (and, I would argue, brave) life.
5-0 out of 5 stars Who Are You?
It's safe to say that there is another side to most of us. No matter who you are, or how big or little it is, or how serious. There is something there that we don't tell others. But the lies and deception in this book from the man/woman it comes from, top it all. The book details the life of respected jazz musician, Billy Lee Tipton. A bright, funny, good natured and handsome young man, who wanted nothing more than to play the music he loved and to have a career doing it. Sounds nice, right?. Billy was born Dorothy Tipton. A she. From the age of 19 up until his death at the age of 74 in 1989, Dorothy had lived as a man. Billy. The writer of this fine and incredible biography, Diane Wood Middlebrook, can't easily answer most of the questions that anyone who knows the story or reads the book will want to know. Why?. Mainly because there is no real way of knowing. Billy Tipton was an incredible mystery. A mystery that the man himself only had the answers too, and he kept them with him when he went to the grave. Only Billy knows why he did it, and he never let it out. Sure, there were some who kind of had an idea along the way, and some who did know, but nothing came of it. The questions his story raise can only be met with ideas and suggestions of the author, and our own viewpoint. The book goes into detail how this man lived and worked. The details of the gigs he would play around the country. The most interesting thing here is that he was able to have five wives!. And according to them, they never knew anything. I have always known the story and it would be appealing and interesting no matter what, but I have a strong connection to it since Billy spent the last 26 or 27 years of his life here in my hometown. Billy's sexuality is the most mysterious. He went for real women, so was she really a lesbian?. What were her thoughts and wants?. No one knows. And why did she do it?. Some say that because back when she was growing up, women were in the background. Men up front. Women had their parts, and the men went off and did the work. There were some women who may of been in groups and what not, but a lot of them were background singers. Some lucky few broke thru the barriers and had solo careers. So did Billy do it so he could actually get a break in the business he wanted in to play the music he loved?. Who knows. It's an odd and infuriating tale since Billy is still a gigantic question mark at the end just as much as he was in the beginning. Middlebrook writes with such a deep understanding and respect for Tipton, and she makes it such an absorbing and compelling read. You could read the whole thing in one day if you wanted too. It's that good. From his stormy upbringing, to his bizarre adult and senior life, Middlebrook creates a brilliant book about a most peculiar and sensational person. A must read. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Ethnography of Female Men
Cromwell provides an interesting ethnography of female men from a FTM perspective in a time when the transgender community is calling for scholarship about transpeople by transcholars. He gives an insider's perspective of a fairly homogenous type of group of transmen that capably provides a few new glimpses into female men's stories.Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Great for educating the masses.
I read this book, but as a cross dresser, I did not find answers for me in this book. I found it informative about the many diverse classifications of transgenderism. I would not suggest this for a transgendered person to find help, but I would suggest it for a person trying to learn about transgenderism and it's many facits. I found many of the statements in the book to come from the psychiatric community, not from transgenderd people themselves. It is a book looking in, not a book from within. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent, Empowering, Beautiful
Although much of the text is about Mr. Califia's personal journey from female to male his writing in this text is inclusive and will not alienate his lesbian audience, he certainly appears to respect the fact that the lesbian community is where he had his start as a very well received author. His candor about his own sexual idenity, sexuality, and gender identity will prove very helpful to anyone who is struggling and find him or herself at whatever place on the gender spectrum. As always Califia is affirming in respect to people's identities while remaining subversive and loud. This text is intellectual without overwhelming the audience with academic rhetoric which is often abundant and excessive in queer theory.

5-0 out of 5 stars Smart and thought-provoking, as ever
Whether he's writing one-handed fiction or politically-minded essays, Patrick Califia can always be counted on to make readers think, laugh, and get angry. This latest essay collection is no exception. Califia takes on larger social issues, from NAMBLA to nonoxynol-9, but he also delves into the personal, including his mother's death from breast cancer and his own transition from female to male. Best of all, he writes candidly about the trials and joys of co-fathering his toddler son. The right-wingers will be foaming at the mouth over this one. Highly recommended ... Read more

Reviews (11)

2-0 out of 5 stars Flawed
This story is a monumental one in its scope, and Ball did take a good crack at it. What annoys me is he seems to have dropped the ball in some areas, Hall's relationship with Dame Margaret Rutherford being one(mentioned, then largely ignored). The conclusions reached at the end are just flawed. Anyone who has ever tried to get a copy of their birth certificate knows you cannot obtain one in a state you were not born in. It seems like he started out with a lot of good intentions, but like some of Hall's writing, the story just fizzles and reaches "a" conclusion.

3-0 out of 5 stars Fear and loathing in Charleston
Fame eluded Gordon Langley Hall as a writer, even though he was a prolific scribbler of memoirs and novels. When he became one of the first people to undergo sex change surgery in America, Hall's local notoriety in Charleston, South Carolina, was unpleasantly mixed with malicious gossip.Edward Ball's new book, Peninsula of Lies: A True Story of Mysterious Birth and Taboo Love, may give Hall, now dead, the recognition that eluded him in life. Ball (author of the National Book Award winner Slaves in the Family) set out to settle two mysteries that have circled one of Charleston's most celebrated-and outrageous-personalities for decades. Was Hall, as he claimed, a hermaphrodite who was misidentified as a male at birth? And did Hall, as he also claimed, conceive and give birth to a daughter, Natasha?
4-0 out of 5 stars Unusual tale set in Charleston
Edward Ball's unusual story of Dawn Langley Hall, set in the charming environs of Charleston, South Carolina, will absorb your interest and leave you still wanting answers to some of the questions it raises. Written in Ball's highly personal style, in which he injects his own thoughts and feelings into the narration, the book tells of Dawn's metamorphosis from his/her birth as a poor boy, son of a servant on a large English estate, to a society woman in Charleston. When Dawn marries a black man, she loses her position in Charleston circles. Later, when she purportedly gives birth to a daughter, she sets tongues wagging all over the city.

5-0 out of 5 stars Essential reading, gay or straight
Coming out of the closet is one of those things that makes one feel out in the open and sticking out like a sore thumb. You contemplate that you might be gay or bi, then finally realize that you are and come out of the closet.Right away, especially if you're anything like me, that's exactly what goes on.Surely, right off the bat, one will feel that they can't talk on the same level let alone relate to anyone.Out of curiosity, I bought this book, and read a bunch of the stories.Although not all of them are just about coming out of the closet, I could relate to a lot of the stories, and probably anyone that has ever come out and goes or has gone to college can relate to at least one of them. All in all, however, in order to get the most out of college, and an open minded perspective, I strongly recommend this collection to anyone just graduating high school and bound for college.Or, don't, and end up with everyone hating you, for you haven't outgrown the high school labeling mentality of calling every gay man a faggot.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fascinating, Engaging, Helpful
The voices of the students come through eloquently in this engaging and fascinating book. The diversity of the GLBT experience on campus is evident. The book helps provide insight into the various experiences ofGLBT students and helps readers see the experience as not at allmonolithic. I recommend this excellent book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Unbelievable!
As a straight college-age female, I was worried that I might not be able to identify and relate tothe experiences of the writers. As I read, however, the authors made me realize that their stories are simply an account of their struggle to do what they feel is right--a process to whichanyone can relate.I especially enjoyed the piece by the student from theUniversity of Texas, Andrew Gray. His courage and determination are trulyremarkable.Yay Andrew! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars An uncommonly perceptive critique
Jay Prosser's book (in addition to being uniquely insightful) occupies a unique place in the growing (trans)gender studies canon: it is the only one that engages seriously with the specificity of transsexual (as distinct from transgender) identification, and critically examines the points of critical divergence between the two (or the several, if you prefer). His readings of the Well of Loneliness and Stone Butch Blues, as well as the appended consideration of transsexual photographic self-portrait (which is as moving as it is insightful) are, quite simply, not to be missed.A must.

As a transsexual man, this book is an invaluable resource.I had begun writings for inclusion in a website and went looking for additional books on transsexualism. This book met all my needs. It offers a seemingly thorough analysis of gender identity in regards to activism and science.I got the book from the local public library (yay libraries!!); however, I realized after the first few pages that this book had to become part of my personal library.I have already recommended it to many people and would definitely recommend it to those seeking to broaden their understanding of gender and the cultural oppression transgendered people face.I also highly recommend it to those that are transgendered because it is also a great "power to the people" book.My website will be a call to action to all those that accept and celebrate diversity with the intent of changing the current political and social limitations that have roots in ignorance and oppression. This book buoyed my resolve and validated my existence at a time that I was struggling with feeling oppressed.Thank you Deborah! ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Important But Flawed
I read this book because the Christian community is important to me, and I know little about what Vanessa Sheridan calls the gender variant.I've known, worked with, and been friends with gays, lesbians, and bisexuals for more than twenty-five years, but never heard of transgendered people until one appeared in my church within the last five years, and I was embarrassed to have to ask what the term meant. Now it takes on new meaning as the child of a friend comes out as transgendered. So I have embarked on a search for understanding.
5-0 out of 5 stars A Timely Blessing
If you or a loved one is transgendered and you have felt in conflict with your Christian faith, help and enlightenment are finally here.Being transgendered and a Christian do not have to be in conflict. As a transgendered Christian, I wish this book had been written years ago.It provides biblically based information to educate those who are transgendered and those who are open to the truth.Churches that are open and affirming to all Christians would do well to include this in their library and to also circulate it amongst both clergy and lay leaders. The book offers many practical ways that Church communities can embrace our little known group.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must read for those in and supportive of the TG commuinty
Vanessa Sheridan has successfully tackled a very challenging topic that effects more of the population than most people realize.Being transgendered or gender variant is challenging enough in a society that has not yet begun to understand, much less accept, this fringe group. Now add to that equation being Christian and you have an appreciation for the difficult subject matter of Sheridan's book.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars One third of a great book
The jewel here is the section on crossdressers. It is entertaining and dead on. You see, I used to be a crossdresser--until I became a woman. One thing that so many of my sisters don't want you to know, and don't want to remember themselves, is that most transsexuals (at least the ones who weren't gay when we were men) began as straight crossdressers. As adolescents, we discovered that it was intensely erotic to wear panties, bras, and other lingerie. We did this in private, and we looked into a mirror, and we masturbated. As we grew older, the intense sexuality of this experience diminished (but did not disappear), and we discovered that we were gratified to venture out (no longer in lingerie but in skirts, nylons, and blouses). Some of us were able to enlist our wives in this activity.
5-0 out of 5 stars Keen Insight, Delightful Style, and Fascinating
After a popular novel and two stunning collections of short stories, psychotherapist and fiction writer Amy Bloom turns an eye toward gender, and her new non-fiction book is a knockout. Made up of three individual essays and an Afterword called "On Nature," Bloom examines issues of gender that are outside what most of society calls "normal." In "The Body Lies: Female-to-Male Transsexuals," we are introduced to a number of people born genetically male who are living as women (with or without sex reassignment surgery); in the section on "Heterosexual Crossdressers," we learn about manly men who, at times, enjoy dressing in feminine garb; the last segment, "Hermaphrodites with Attitude," is about people born with ambiguous "genital anomalies." The author interviewed numerous transsexuals, crossdressers, and intersexed people as well as doctors, educators, sex researchers, and others to give readers an engrossing glimpse at the confusion, prejudice, and misunderstanding that occurs when people are not so easily boxed into categories of "male" or "female." With a deft touch and a wry sense of humor, Bloom makes a cogent argument for acceptance and understanding. In a segment that will no doubt be much quoted, she writes, "(O)ur mistake is in thinking that the wide range of humanity represents aberration when in fact it represents just what it is: range. Nature is not two little notes on a child's flute; Nature is more like Aretha Franklin: vast, magnificent, capricious-occasionally hilarious-and infinitely varied" (p. 149)5-0 out of 5 stars Keen Insight, Delightful Style, and Fascinating
