4-0 out of 5 stars the truth hurts
I am an autogynephilic transsexual, and I think that Janice Raymone doesn't like people like me. And I understand why. Too often, delusional and aggressive and masculine trannies try to bully their way into women's networks. I think that the other kind of male-to-female transsexual ("homosexual transsexuals"--see Bailey's THE MAN WHO WOULD BE QUEEN) would fit in better, but they have no desire to do so.

1-0 out of 5 stars Because there's no option for 0 stars...
Apparently the author has some sort of personal vendetta against transsexuals and is trying to spread her narrow-minded and illogical views to the world. Her arguments are weak, and the overall content of the book is poorly researched. Do not waste your time trying to read this kind of garbage.

1-0 out of 5 stars Transsexual Empire
I have read both versions of this book. I tried to have an open mind. Dr. Raymond is not trying to have any sort of constructive dialogue with transpeople. She is just pushing a transphobic form of radical feminism. It is possible to constructively critique the male dominated industry that regulates transsexual surgery but Raymond is more interested in attacking transsexual people. It is wrong to call her book the mein kampf against transsexuals but there is little positive in the book.Perhaps someday Dr. Raymond will realize that her book has hurt transpeople and revise it yet again. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars practical and uplifting!
This book is a collection of daily meditations for Gay, Lesbian, Transgendered, and bisexual people. Each day features a very short meditation: about two paragraphs, which gives insight on what it means to be a G/L/T/B person in today's world.Very positive! This book has helped me, as a gay person, examine how I live my life and how I can change for the better.Make it part of your daily ritual! This book sometimes gives a challenge for the day: i.e. one day gives us the challenge that if we hide our sexual identity from others, we are only making things more difficult for us.Others will let us take a break: i.e. today, maybe we shouldn't think about our sexuality at all.Sometimes, this little book asks us to stand up for ourselves, and perhaps confront others who have "pushed us around" in the past because of our sexuality; other times, it suggests perhaps we are not accepting straight people, or making false assumptions about what they are thinking about us.I have to say, this book is definitely encouraging.I only wish I was given this book the first day I knew about my sexuality. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Expand your horizon of gender possibilities!
Once again, transgender writers prove to be at the cutting-edge of radical queer theory. In this thought-provoking anthology of essays and poetry, these young, diverse FTM transgender activists destabilize the gender binary and challenge us all to question what it means to be male, female, third gender, no gender, or something else entirely! While all the writings in this book are wonderful, I especially enjoyed the brilliant essays by Dean Spade and Matt Kailey! As gender regulation plays a crucial role in maintaining this oppressive system of capitalism, patriarchy and white supremacy, the implications of this book are far-reaching and revolutionary.

5-0 out of 5 stars Unique contribution to trans literature
The negative review clearly comes from someone who didn't read this book thoroughly. There are some impressive insights, rare viewpoints and perspectives, and eloquent personal narratives.

2-0 out of 5 stars just ok
although there is an intense void in the subject of trans and gender queer writings this book does little to fill it.there are occational glimering voices of truth and clarity most notably the essay by the transman with MS, but overall there was too much youthful exuberance and not enough thoughful, mature writing.i would much rather read a personal account of someone's reality than someone perched on a soapbox telling about how they live outside the gender binary.although i believe gender is something worth deconstructing, to not acknowledge that it exists in this world, or to say you live outside of it without giving examples of how you make this possible shows to me a lack of maturity on the part of the writer.

2-0 out of 5 stars we've all got problems
the message of this book seems to be that transsexual people are more than just transsexuals.they are people.yes, thank you mr. rees. thank you for beating that message into me for 184 pages.seemingly without direction, he pounds out the events of his life, giving the reader the name of every friend along the way. oh, and thanking each of them, again and again.a look into a life with conflict, but we all have problems.read it if you somehow think homosexuals are the same thing as transexuals, but by and large an un-enlightening book.

3-0 out of 5 stars TO SIR WITH LOVE...
This autobiographical account of the author's life focuses ongender identity issues which appear to have governed most of his life. Anatomically a female, though somewhat androgynous in appearance, the author, named Brenda at birth, always felt as if he were a male trapped in a woman's body. This created many difficult life situations for him as he was growing up. The difficulties compounded themselves when "Brenda" reached puberty, as one may well imagine.5-0 out of 5 stars Recommended for Trannies and Their Families
I found Dear Sir or Madam while looking for appropraite reading for mymother that was both heartfelt and honest, but not grim or especiallydetailed regarding surgery, etc. This autobiography paints a very accurateportrayal of growing up male, though confined to a female body. This isgood reading material for people just beginning their transition, theirfriends and family, and supporters. In the wake of many other books thatleave us feeling pitied, you will be nothing shy of uplifted andcelebratory of Mark Rees' journey and conquest. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars interesting lens
Written when Patrick Califia was still Pat Califia, this book is a good overview of both what it means to live in the gender binary and a discussion of transgender politics of the last 50 or so years. I especially love it for two things: 1) a feminist eye, and 2) accessible writing. S/he doesn't get bogged down in jargon, and his extensive background as a feminist sex radical informs a lot of the opinions expressed.

5-0 out of 5 stars Highly recommended
Highly recommended.Patrick Califia writes:5-0 out of 5 stars Readily accessible history and analysis
Most of you may know Pat Califia as a SM writer -- both fiction and non-fiction.This is one ofCalifia's non-fiction works. In 8 chapters, Califia tackles the public lives of several transgendered folks in the twentieth century. In no way does Califia endorse their views, in fact she points out that many of them are hardly gender radicals because they embrace very traditional views of gender roles. In many ways, this was quite sad to read.If you know that Califia has now become Patrick Califia you can read this book as both a historical and psychological analysis of the issue of transgenderism as well as a historical look at Califia's own personal journey. This book is not for those of you with very conservative views of sexuality or gender roles so if you buy it, it will make your upset but now you are warned. ... Anyone dealing with theological issues and gender identity must read this book.Dr. Tanis provides the reader with a solid argument about the validity of gender variant people in our chrches and in our society through the use of personal stories of his journey and the journey of others as well as solid scriptural evidence. If you are grappling with your own gender identity or if you are trying to understand the gender identity of someone in your life this book will open your eyes in ways you could have never imagined.Be prepared to encounter new found courage and strength within its pages.Dr. Tanis also provides an excellent introduction to the transgender experience from a cultural as well as religious stand point. He breaks down the issues surrounding gender identity in simplistic terms so that the reader does not already have to be well versed in queer theory in order to hear his message.I strongly recommend this book. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Moronic
That this author claims that she sees no autogynephilic transsexuals (i.e., men who have a sexual turn-on to the idea that they are women) shows that she has a clinical tin ear. She is good at regurgitating the distortions of those who want to hide autogynephilia though. But you could just read fairy tales instead.

5-0 out of 5 stars It flatters us
I like this book because it makes it sound as if we're really like women. And it deemphasizes the sexual component of transitioning. So one transsexual used to wear fake body parts and get off. So another used to cross dress fetishistically and be turned on by transseuxal pornography. So another is a distinguished electrical engineer, which is one of the most masculine occupations. (Why the droopy face?) We are all just like women, or at least we like to think we are. It is what we live for. Who needs honesty?

5-0 out of 5 stars Gender Defender? YES!!!!
This is a great empathetic written work of her personal experiences. Not written to be a text book. I will say the freeform was certainly different, but had unique flow. I have a glimpse of what a gender therapist experiences from there perspective, and I am grateful for that. I cannot believe the negative reviews of one star JUST for not mentioning autogynaphilia, which has been well known for 20 years(OLD HAT). Randi mentions sexual motivation components in her books while stating that it is not productive to focus on them. She does not refer to autogynaphilia directly, because it has mostly been abandon as a "cause". Read Transgender Care as well, even better. She seems to take more the symptomatic approach. Bailey resurrects 20 YEAR OLD two type model ideas by Blanchard with some careful distortions. It is this two-type narrow scope that is controversial (aside from Baileys ethics).Randi Ettner IS aware of it (read her comments on the internet and you folks would know). So are members of the Harry Benjamin International Gender Dysphoria Association, of which she is a member. What they are NOT doing is blowing something out of proportion that research indicates IS NOT the only cause or motivation for transsexualism. Do not let people like Bailey try to use Junk Science to label TS's as a sexual driven fetish, your rights will disappear much faster than you can imagine based on junk science and old festering inflamed phobic hysteria. The right has already jumped on the Bailey ban wagon because his non-scientific slanderous insensitive transphohic narrow attitudes align with theirs and they can't wait to get "scientific" credence for calling transsexuals sexual deviants so they can get on with thier well documented hateful attacks on transgendered people. THINK.Autogynaphilia exists and no one is trivializing TS's that have this motivational component. Junk Science like Baileys book promotes a narrow two type model and simply avoids FTM's. So many MTF TS's cannot be in "denial". If anything Baileys book has DIVIDED trans people, very much like the red and blue armband experiments.Autogynaphilia is NOT a catch all nor is it a characterization or a cause of transsexualism. It is also this reviewers OPINION that it is only a COMPLEX symptom of some TS's, perhaps many, but does NOT define the cause. Bailey, aside from being a simple hard head who seems to be educated beyond his own intelligence, subtly admits [to modern research] the cause has genetic or biological underpinnings while promoting autogynaphilia as a motivator and more a characteristic definition, very vague and surreptitious in his writing. He is quite obvious and arrogant when it comes to his books title and cover art for which he is steadfast unapologetic, in spite of his own supporters complaints/offense. Not to mention his degrading comments about what TS are qualified for. Look it up. Very sensitive indeed...NOT! Don't get caught up in this Bailey book, which seems to be designed from the beginning to cause controversy and divide. Please read Baileys position on eugenics. THINK about it. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars "B"eautiful and very "T"imely
FINALLY! A book on the similarities, and differences, of "the others" is so long overdue. Alexander and Yescavage have assembled an impressive collection of scholarly, activist, and artistic literture that exemplifies the true diversity and beauty of gender and sexual expression. In a time when heterosexuals and homosexuals continue to stigmatize and silence bisexuals and transgender individuals, claiming that gender and sexuality are binary constructs, this book serves as a reminder that the world is not black-and-white and that "the others" should not only be accepted but should be celebrated. 5-0 out of 5 stars Informative, Yet Easy to Read
I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants a better understanding of the trangendered and transsexual (particularly transmen). As a man in transition, I feel as if Matt Kailey has been reading my mind (or my journal), and he also gave me an idea of what's ahead for me.I have recommended it to all my friends who want to learn more about this part of my life.Good job, Matt.

5-0 out of 5 stars "Do You Feel Like A Man Now?I Don't Know."
Denver transman Matt Kailey and I must be about the same age, but we came to this space of manhood by such different paths.I picked up his book in order to help myself navigate my way around the many brilliant and varied genders of San Francisco, where every other person you meet on the scene is doing something about gender, not just sitting there and taking it.Consequently, as Kailey realizes, we sometimes don't know even the basic rules of etiquette when it comes to this new frontier. And, in addition, I was drawn by the pastel cover illustration, so apt and so clever. You might not be able to see it well in the reduced image but when you get the book you'll see it's apparently a woman diving into a large chemical test tube vat thing of a pearly blue liquid, and there's a man in it, his pose diametrically opposite and yet strangely synchronous to the woman above him. This is an allegory, I suppose, for Kailey's life, which changed gradually and organically and now he is--well, what?"What's in a name" indeed, that becomes one of the chapters, one that tells us, in simple to follow anecdotes and stories, how even the terms that we use to describe others and especially ourselves are like windows that open out into the light, or else separate us from the outside world.

5-0 out of 5 stars Professional and scholarly articles are the focus
This is a more academic collection than many others discussing transgender and transexual issues.Thirteen researchers and activists have contributed to this book.Usually their biases are clearly stated up front and for the most part the evidence is also well presented. As in most academic articles the reader may be surprised by the personal focus and "attacks" in some of the articles -- sadly this is all too common in many of the social andmedicial sciences. Not geared toward the average reader; having a good grasp of social or psychological theory plus some experience in college level analysis is practically a must to get the most from this book.

3-0 out of 5 stars A primarily psychoanalytic and somewhat disappointing book
Although it covers a broad spectrum of experience (if from a somewhat limited viewpoint) I expected a lot more from a book that has Stephen Whittleand Janice Raymond contributing adjacent chapters.Thecore of the book is a debate about the historical construct- ion of "transgender" and its legitimacy in modern culture. The arguments against, with the exception of Raymond's revised introduction to the Transsexual Empire (1994), seem to predate the emergence of "transgender" as a term, and thus don't address any of the cultural developments that have sprung up around it.Furthermore, as psychoanalysts predominate, there is an annoying tendency for essays to treat transgendered subjectivity as a source only for raw data, and not a legitimate independent critical voice. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Re: Question
I second that.Really, does the writer assert that transsexualism is caused by chemicals and toxins??That's absurd. I'd really like to know.

1-0 out of 5 stars question
i'm a little confused as to the book description. it says "This condition is world wide due to exposure of chemicals and toxins."
4-0 out of 5 stars From the heart
This book is written totally from the heart. It is obvious that English is the authors second language. I have been in contact with him and he is a wonderful person who is truly committed to making this world a better place for transgendered folks and the rest of us too. My suggestion would be better editing, which I or my son (FTM) will offer to do with him. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Marketing-minded authors
The concept of this book is wonderful... interviews with glbt people who talk about their coming out experiences in a religious setting. This book is a piece of marketing propaganda for the United Church of Christ.Nearly every person mentions how wonderful and magical the UCC is.Personally, denomination should have been left out of it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very affirming book
"Coming out young and Faithful" is a book of coming-out experiences of spiritual teenagers and young adults: an attempt to call the Christian Church into liberation, justice, and love. According to the editors, its brainchild was the Youth and Young Adult Ministries Program of the United Church of Christ. The goal of this book is to bring their experiences together, which will allow the truth to be told and start the healing process for these g/l/b/t teenagers: "That they will know themselves as defined by the grace of God." The major strength of this book is the fact that teens wrote it, not degreed professionals. Though they are a great help to us, sometimes, it helps to hear peer's experiences, so that we know were not alone.I suggest this book to anyone who is thinking about religion and homosexuality. Hearing the experiences of g/l/b/t Christians can be a great meditative experience. ... Read more

Queer Japan is an excellent book examining the real lives of gays, lesbians and transsexuals in Japan. I know the editors of the book personally and attended the book opening in Tokyo. I heard the stories of the Japanese women and men whose personal stories are contained in thebook. It is a moving and realistic account of the Japanese people's treatment of transgressors of their mianstream culture. I lived in Japan for 6 years and taught at Gunma Prefectural Women's University with Cheiron (one of the editors); and I know first hand the lives of the lesbian, gay and transsexual people in Japan.
5-0 out of 5 stars A Voice for those who have been discouraged from speaking
I came across this book three years ago, when I first arrived in Japan. I was reading it just as I was coming to terms with my own homosexuality. It contributed to the opening of my mind, and helped me find courage to come out and start living my life to the fullest.5-0 out of 5 stars A very interesting and accurate glimpse of Japan
I have lived in Japan for more than twenty years and I was very pleased to read this book.Though I am not gay I have many Japanese and non Japanese friends who are, and I have listened over the years to their stories. This book is a perfect example of what the gay experience is like here in Japan. It's very honest and moving. I highly recommend this book to anyone who is interested in Japanese sub culture. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book but do NOT buy it new
The five stars are for the truly amazing, immensly well written, entertaining and hilarious story of transsexual Jayne County, once a part of the Warhol gang and still a fixture on the NY scene - a true star. This is a book that everyone should read! However, do NOT buy this book in "new" condition but order a decent used copy. The "new" version I received from amazon was a crappy scanned version of a paper copy of the original paperback, with the text messy and hard-to-read and the photos fuzzy, unrecognizable blobs. Obviously the publisher lost the digital files and was too cheap to recreate the book. I was so upset that I wrote the publisher (in England) and told them that it was fraud to offer a book in this condition as "new". However, the 1995 version is everything that you could wish for, including some fabulous photos from a very glam era that has now gone by.

5-0 out of 5 stars "He doesn't even have his wig on."
Author Jayne County was born as Wayne County. The book "Man Enough to be a Woman" is the entertaining account of her life as a transvestite. The author, who was born male, grew up in a small town near Atlanta, Georgia. The author's stories of her family make it clear that some relatives were more than a little unusual, and early memories include Wayne announcing he wanted to be a girl. Throughout childhood, Wayne identified with women--especially the glamorous film stars of the day. Soon Wayne was entertaining the neighbourhood with 'shows' in which he wore outrageous costumes and loads of make-up. After graduating from high school, Wayne moved to Atlanta and immediately submerged into the subculture of drag queens. As a transvestite, Wayne became Jayne and worked in America, London, and Berlin and was a singer, actress, stripper, journalist, and briefly--a prostitute.5-0 out of 5 stars Life of boy turned girl
I love Jayne County.I loved Wayne too. This is all about Wayne transforming into Jayne, the true-life tale of a gender-bending rock'n'roll survivor.Jayne describes her early years, as a "sissy boy" who dared to wear lipstick in a southern small town during the '60's.Young Wayne was actually shot at by local rednecks.County wisely decided to get out of town, ditching small-town hell for the much more cool NYC, Andy Warhol scene.Jayne describes the influence gender-bending Warhol superstars had on the pre-Ziggy David Bowie.Bowie is described as a hippy who's only saving grace (at that time) was his outrageous wife, Angie.County describes turning down Bowie flat ("He was of no interest to me sexually."), and un-requited lust for...Rod Stewart!Very entertaining anecdotes about roomates Holly Woodlawn and Jackie Curtis, both Warhol Factory and Max's Kansas City fixtures.Highly fascinating account of her life in Berlin, and transformation from Wayne to Jayne. ... Beemyn has edited an anthology of works from emerging academics who are studying gay life outside of the white, vanilla, male mode. This anthology has great articles on gay black men, Asian lesbians, biracial female sadomasochists, etc.It is a very welcome edition to my gay studies collection.I find myself citing articles from this anthology all the time.I truly recommend this book.I think gay men and lesbians of color will truly appreciate it. ...
