5-0 out of 5 stars New ideas about feminism and gay rights
As a women studies librarian, I do a fair bit of reading on both feminism and glbt rights. If you're like me, it's been a while since you've read something truly "new" in this area -- ideas that take you by surprise and that you keep turning it over and over again in your mind for the sheer pleasure of thinking new things. 5-0 out of 5 stars Voices from the "Pioneer" days of gay liberation
There have already been some memorable books profiling the best known of the leaders in the fight for equal rights for gays and lesbians in America. The first thing that makes author Paul D. Cain's first book unique is that he goes beyond the "usual" names to feature an extremely diverse group of 39 men and women, who indeed have all significantly influenced our community in some way. Some are front line activists, but many are better known for their efforts "behind the scenes" as teachers, artists, authors, composers, publishers, preachers, or simply openly living their lives at a time or place where role models made a great difference in the lives of young gay men and lesbians.
5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent effort!
Paul Cain has written a wonderful book, profiling 39 of the outstanding figures in the struggle towards gay acceptance and rights that went on from 1940 to 1990. All of these chapters were the result of his drive and desire to get to know these people. Along with his personal interviews, he did an enormous amount of research which makes each chapter a thorough study of each individual. The book includes chapters on such lights as Rita Mae Brown, Frank Kameny, Troy Perry, Miriam Ben Shalom, Dorr Legg, Urvashi Vaid, and many more. It's well worth the money! Just in time for gay pride, too! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars What lies within you
Sometimes you judge a book by its cover. Sometimes you read the book and discover so much more. If education is experience. And the essence of experience is self-reliance. Then you should experience this book for yourself.
4-0 out of 5 stars The changing self
Identity, sexuality, and emotion in learning to teach, is the subtitle to this remarkable book, Negotiating the Self, written by Kate Evans.Evans examines the experiences of gay and lesbian teachers in the school setting. She uses several different pre-service teachers and their experiences of teaching to convey the message of the difficulties homosexual educators have in the school systems. Then Evans goes further in this realm of experiencing difficulties while teaching to include any teacher, regardless of race, sexual orientation, religion, or creed.Every educator negotiations themselves during teaching because of their own personal identities that they do not wish to reveal to their students. 5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent!
I originally was not interested in reading this book, but I am glad I did read it.I was entertained and compelled to stop and reflect on how and why we send the messages we do.The journey travels on four different lives that have pain, personal struggles, and laughter, which are things that we all share. Just like any other good book, I couldnt put it down until I found out what became of these four people.Unlike a fictional story, Kate Evans eloquently narrates the stories, and brings the importance of the common theme, self-identity, to the more national issue of the education and gay/lesbian mix.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Praise God
I will praise God for the wealth of Godly wisdom and discernment He has poured upon the minds of His children.Without Godly wisdom and discernment many people will be tricked by the false claims made by Homosexual activists.Without writers such as John Ankerberg and John Weldon as well as many others I wouldn't have been able to pull out of the oppression of homosexuality.I too was fooled by those activist... the fact remains the lost are leading the lost. That's why it takes men and women of God to stand up to help those that are lost. What many don't realize is that I am 18 and because of my decision to turn away from homosexuality at an early age Iovercame it with the redeeming power of Christ Jesus. Now as the years pass by I will look back at when I accepted Jesus Christ and say "Thank you God for turning my life around at an early age so I wouldn't have to live with a depraved and desperately wicked mind."To those who say homosexuals can't "change", your are just fooling yourself and lying to those who are suffering so.You are actually signing your own death certificate and what you need is the Lord Jesus Christ in your life to take you out of this abominable life stealing immoral behavior.

1-0 out of 5 stars Cheney family values
Ankerberg makes some interesting points but fails to apply his assertions to the Cheney family. The highly respected Dick and Lynne Cheney raised their daughter with the family values that resulted in her settling down with Heather Poe into a fully lesbian lifestyle. Never before has America seen with such detail how Republican family values are not contrary to an active and unrepentant homosexual lifestyle. Mary is Dick's favorite and most trusted daughter and was his top aide during the campaign. Yet homosexuals are considered by definition negative role models (as in the Boy Scouts). Why were Dick and Lynne Cheney negligent parents and why have they failed to acknowledge the tragic mistakes they made in raising a homosexual daughter? Why has Mary refused to accept ex-gay treatment and why haven't Dick and Lynne encouraged her to leave the lifestyle? Ankerberg fails to answer any of these critical questions...

5-0 out of 5 stars A Life's Unfurling
Tibet-O-Ramais a journey into the unfurling and weaving of the intricate vine of personality and character a person is. Each revelation a window into the puzzle components that mold an ever-evolving dynamic human being.I see Eric as a never stagnant, always changing-morphing person. There is never really an end to growing, for new information affects perspective. Eric's quest is revealed through a quilt of lived experiences, deep and honest, but never crass, and Eric sustains humor, integrating and learning about life. Eric's experiences touched me, made me laugh, feel the sadness and frustrations, and joy.His honesty, reminded me we are not alone, we all share in the journey of self-growth and awareness of life.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Personal AND the Political
Tibet-O-Rama is a very refreshing book whose author is not afraid to blur the genres of ethnography and personal memoir (after all, Klieger shows, aren't our interests and observations informed by who we are?!).The protagonist, Eric, has a passion for Tibet -- is it just another case of the Westerner's Orientalist gaze/desire, or is it devoted political activism...or both? There is much to be learned here about those who readily give and receive aid, about the dilemmas that face those born with everything and those born with nothing, and about the commonalities they share.

5-0 out of 5 stars Recollections of a professional and personal life
Tibet-O-Rama by cultural anthropologist P. Christiaan Klieger (California Academy of Sciences, San Francisco) is the recollections of a professional and personal life intertwined with the amazing beauty and rich culture that characterizes the nation of Tibet. From 1978 to the present day, and encompassing the paradox of the Dalai Lama and other Tibetan exiles, Tibet-O-Rama is a wonderfully presented ethnographical and historical work celebrating the author's admiration and appreciation for Tibet, its people, and their courage in spite of all of the social and political dilemmas they face. ...
