5-0 out of 5 stars Expensive book
I have not read this book. However, from what the editorial reviews say about this book, I would like to order it for our Lutheran church library. However, it is so expensive that I must pass on it. ... seems incredibly steep for 200 pages of information. Why does it not have a more reasonable price? This is a very important issue for gay and lesbian Lutherans and their families and friends.I wish it were less expensive so we could get the word out about this issue and start opening some minds. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Absolute Genius! Assimilationists look out!
This is the most reasonable, well organized work on gay political culture in existence. Bersani delves beyaonf the rhetoric, and into the psyche of society and the gay culture, making clear why "de-gaying gayness" is a travesty to all parts of society. It is a must reaa for anyone grappling with their sense of society, belonging, be-ing. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Great project, complex subject, poor results......
This book is an anthology about the school experiences of young gay men and lesbians of color. It is an important intervention in that this group is twice as removed from mainstream educators' radars. It annihilates the pure fallacy that all the gays are white and all the people of color are straight. However, this project is all over the place. Academic readers will hate the "uhm"'s and "like"'s of the personal student narratives. Non-academic readers will be turned off by the high-level jargon of the scholars. Many people will especially be lost after reading Kumashiro's introduction. The uncritical use of the word "queer" is very problematic as well. Some articles are great (McCready, for example); some are the definition of terrible (Shen-Hayes). I think those interested in gays and lesbians of color will want to buy this book. Still, they should be aware that it could have been better.

2-0 out of 5 stars a mixed bag for a complicated subject
This book intends to be a resource for those who want to explore the educational issues facing GLBT students of color. The anthology is divided into academic writers coming up with theories on the matter and vignettes from gay students of color describing their experiences. It brings up many common topics from which LGBTPOC students often have to endure:being the only person of color in gay-straight alliances, dealing with same-race peers who say no one of their background could be gay, coming out to immigrant parents when there is no word for "gay" in one's home-spoken language, etc.In general, the point of the book is to get educators to think of students who are twice removed from mainstream school radars and whom many don't even think exist. However, there may be too many cooks in this rather short anthology. With much effort, Kumashiro attempts to explain why this anthology does critical work without trying to state that racism and homophobia are the worse or only injustices facing students.Nevertheless, his words are bogged down in inpenetrable language and many readers are going to (wrongly) stop reading the book after his introduction. The non-elite, non-academic readers are going to be bored and confused by the writings of the academics. The academics are going to be dismissive of all the "uhms" and "likes" of the young gays of color.IN ADDITION, READERS WHO DON'T COME FROM LEFT-WING, POSTMODERN SETTINGS WILL BE INSTANTLY HORRIFIED AT EVERY AUTHORS' UNCRITICAL USAGE OF THE TERM "QUEER".There are superb pieces here, such as McCready's exploration of why black males haven't joined a California gay student group.Still, there are hollow, poorly stitched-together pieces such as Chen-Hayes' article on multiracial families.Education is a hodgepodge field that draws from multiple disciplines anyway. Thus, I don't know where Kumashiro's project falters on its own or what. But this was a difficult effort on an important topic.Fans of writings from gays and lesbians of color still should add this to their collection. The work cited pages in all the articles point to other (better?) sources that readers will want to find as well. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Missed opportunity
Too bad that the editors of this collection have featured themselves more prominently than the excellent writers who contributed to this "anthology" and aren't even featured. If you glanced at the cover, you'd never know that the book includes such well known writers as Sue Ellen Case, George Chauncey, and John Rechy, whose lucid essay is a highlight of this collection that all too often bogs down in "queer-theorizing" jargon, relieved by some excellent vintage photographs, drawings, and reproductions of posters and relevant documents. More of the same editorial attention might have been applied to some of the dense pieces. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Every elementary school teacher must read this!
"Children don't need to hear about any sexual issues at their age, but I'm not a homophobe or anything.""Children are innocent, so I wouldn't bring up gay issues, but I'm not a homophobe or anything.""I don't challenge children that use homophobic words because they just mean 'jerk', but I'm not a homophobe or anything."Every gay elementary school teacher and every gay rights activist has heard these lies. Finally, there is a book that addresses such non-sense.And this is a book by teachers for teachers. This book explains how pervasive homophobia is in the primary school system and it offers valuable ways to stop the prejudice.Too many education texts are written by teachers that are only used to being read by their students. The writers here are good (or well edited, at least) and their work has been strongly influnced by multiculturalism, feminism, and upper-level academic theory. The anthology includes pieces by women and people of color. It even has a piece by straight educators and one by an Australian activist.I think the editors are going to lose many readers due to their overly easy use of the word "queer", but for those who choose to continue reading, they will like what they find. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Money is a fraud
Dr. Money (a psychologist, not a medical doctor) spent the first 30 years of his career faking a gender experiment at the cost of a boy's sanity.Despite knowledge that the subject of the experiment continued to assert himself as a boy and refused gender engineering, Dr. Money pretended that his experiment in socialization worked 100% on the subject.Read more

Editorial Review

The "Gay '90s" of the 20th century have been nothing if not, well, gay. For the first time, gays and lesbians have witnessed consistent positive representation of their lives in film, on television, in literature, and in politics. Gay culture has even extended itself to the oft-impenetrable ivory tower, where academics have been conceiving a new branch of the humanities: gay and lesbian studies. As anthropologist Kath Weston notes in Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The best book I have ever read on Lawrence.
Having read everything ever written on Lawrence, and even written a book myself, I can unconditionally state that this is the best book in the field.I unconditionally reccomend it to all readers, whether neophytes wanting to learn about the "myth behind the man," or seasonsed Lawrence experts.Although each essay shines in its own way, Stang's stands out as a major new contribution to Lawrence scholarship.

5-0 out of 5 stars THE BEST BOOK ON LAWRENCE EVER
Having read everything ever written on Lawrence, and even written a book on him myself, I can state without qualification that this book contains the best work ever produced on Lawrence "of Arabia."I reccomend it both to the first-time reader wanting to go beyond the Lawrence of legend, and to the long-time academic devotee of the military and intellectual career of this icon of the 20th century.Although each essay is excellent in its own way, Stang's stands out as a pillar of Lawrence scholarship. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Bumpy Ride
I bought the book because I love the title. This is an intense book that reminds me that I often don't go far enough in my own thinking. He is right when it comes to the level to which gays are outside the norm.Hisfirst chapter on the assumptions that have misguided science and sociologywhere enlightening to me.This book allows the reader to contemplate thecreation of categories such as male/female and heterosexual/homosexual.Ido wish the author would throw out some ideas as to why this all might haveoccurred.Knowing the motivation behind the reigning mythology might helpin dismantling such myths and their destructive effects.Pointing out thesource of the problem is just the first step. This book is more of aphilisophical discourse than an in depth recounting of the myths ofhomosexuality and transgression. Also,I can't really excuse some of theloose cultural commentary in the book: "By becoming 'average' many gaypeople have failed to become anybody.Somehow the hope to be accepted hasbeen confused with the determination to be compliant."I find no wayto respond to these comments.I see them as wasted energy until we cantrack down these nebulous "many gay people" he speaks of, whichof course you can't.It doesn't help that I am among the generationyounger than the author. His musings on the current gay climate aregenerally pessimistic and without much focussed speculation. He loves theFrench Symbolist poets (Baudelaire,Mallarme, and Rimbaud). However, hisapproach to the enclaves of transgressors in Paris, New York, andSilverlake with their overriding gay sensibility comes dangerously close tothe heterosexual Garden of Eden, which he happily debunks. Are theseenclaves now on-line?Highwater speculates more on my generation's"assimilation" than our current moving forward of humanity.I amtotally bitter.Highwater is at his best when he lets a bit of hispersonality shine through, which he does from time to time.I loved thescope of his thinking and his ability to span centuries.I found hisability to make far-reaching comparisons exhilirating even if theyultimately don't succeed. For example, I wasn't bothered by his briefcomparison between the general reaction to AIDS and the general reaction toPolio. This book is also a wonderful sourcebook for recent intellectualthinking.Unfortunately, the typos and missed words were plentiful andannoying. I enjoyed the ride despite the few bumps.Viva Trangsression!

5-0 out of 5 stars A BOOK THAT SPEAKS TO EVERYONE
Mr. Highwater's encyclopedia knowledge, his original and completely convincing analogies, and his fleet, transparent musical prose make a book that both creates an extraordinary world of its own and also - brilliantly, unforgettably - illuminates the world in which we live. The book speaksto everyone - gay, straight, other - looking for a new way to synthesizethe religious, political, aesthetic, and physcological legacies that makeup who we are.

5-0 out of 5 stars AMAZON.COM'S CRITIC GOT IT RIGHT: A REMARKABLE BOOK
There are so many biased books for and against outsiders in general and homosexuals in particular that it is extremely agreeable to find a book that has both scope, poetry, and a remarkable vision of the worldwidecommunity, past and present. Highwater takes on homosexuality as the mostvivid metaphor of the outsider and in the process provides a ratherspectacular view of the Western world from THE OUTSIDE!!The scholarshipis remarkable. The language is as fluent as a novel. The ideas stimulatingand eye-opening.Altogether, a most intriguing, not-to-be-missed book. ... Read more
