4-0 out of 5 stars Subtle, Elegant
Most of the chapters of this book begin with funerary monuments--of two men, or two women, who wanted to be buried together. Bray concludes that in pre-modern times, when life was lived more in public, and it was common for people to sleep in the same bed, the intimacy of friends was much greater than it is today, and was suffused with rituals, especially derived from Holy Communion. Were these relationships sexual? Probably yes, Bray concludes, but that isn't exactly the point, since that's a question we moderns are much more interested in than they were. It's more about how friendship has changed. The argument is subtle, and elegant--my one complaint is that sometimes the prose is too sinuous, when simple declaration would suffice. Some reviewers have even missed the point--they suggest that the friendships were NOT sexual, which isn't what Bray says at all. Incidentally, there's a terrific review of the book in the London Review of Books. ... Read more

I absolutely loved this book.It was as fun to read as the title suggests and informative as well. It brought back to my memory days of my rambunctious youth, and painted a picture of the settings beautifull in myhead.I would give it all five stars, but it does seem to be lagging insome places.Overall it is a good read that is really worth every penny. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Fascinating Stuff
It takes a while to get into this book because the first chapter is a bit boring (needs some serious editing, in fact). But once past that hurdle, there's not a dull moment. While one might take issue with the author's apparent attitude that the Native American version of science is superior to that of the Western world's, there's no doubt that the Western world has missed a lot of vital information about the nature of reality. The Native Americans were shoved aside by the Western invaders, who seldom had the sense to acknowledge the wisdom (not to mention the mathematics and the astronomy and the way to make a decent canoe) that the natives had to offer; now we're learning that much of what the natives believed is echoed in the new physics that is still being examined.

5-0 out of 5 stars A unique and original work of insight
Blackfoot Physics: A Journey Into The Native American Universe is a melding of anthropology, history, metaphysics, cosmology, and quantum theory. Written by F. David Peat (a theoretical physicist who has also studied Native American ceremonies and traditions such as the Blackfoot Sun Dance), Blackfoot Physics strives to bridge the gap between diverse understandings of the universe, while crafting parallels between science and spirituality. A unique and original work of insight, Blackfoot Physics in a unique and strongly recommended contribution to Metaphysical Philosophy and Native American Studies. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Entering a Queer Culture
As a newcomer into the rhelm of queer theory and also as a graduate student, I found this book highly interesting, sparking many topics useful for analysis, like Judith Butler, and controversy, like Gayle Rubin. Most of the essays captured the readers attention and urged for outside investigation for newcomers on issues like Stonewall, AIDS, and ACT UP.Adequate background information was given about queer cultures in general allowing ample understanding of such texts. While reading certain essays, though, there was a struggle to try and relate them to the rest of the text.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not even that good for newcomers
As a graduate student, I've found Queer Cultures to be more than a little frustrating. Although we can all benefit from (re)assessing just what queer theory is and its origins in history, Queer Cultures never seems to get beyond these issues. The first two chapters are clearly devoted to such topics and subsequent essays tend to also move through their own formulation of queer at length. Consequently, it looks as if some of the theory itself gets short changed. Readers should also know that a good portion of the text is dominated by the history of queer activism but that the editors fail to include a survey of the most influential theorists, theories, and trends in queer theory, which would have been particularly useful for a book designed for newcomers to the subject.

4-0 out of 5 stars A raid that lives on in Mexican culture, making "41" a slur
Derived from a conference held at Tulane University on the centennial of the 1901 drag ball raided by Mexico City police, the book includes (in both Spanish and English) a substantial part of a naturalist novel by Eduardo Castrejon, _Los 41_ that describes preparations for the ball, the ball, and the Yucatan exile of the unlucky cross-dressed males, the famous Posada cartoons, the reports from a range of newspapers, four chapters analyzing the scandal and concerns about the compromised masculinity of the Porifirian elite, a chapter trying to impose the author's view on what the gender systems of Mexican prisons should have been (rejecting what evidence is available). a very detailed analysis of one case study of a woman incarcerated in a Mexican asylum, and an essay on the popular poet Amando Nervo's "sentimental womanliness." The last two chapters are not related to the bust of the (in)"famous 41," and the last one does not specify when Nervo wrote what Sylvia Molloy chooses to discuss. Although insightful, her chapter is unhistorical in being unmoored from dates of composition or publication. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Scientific Thinking Can Be Fun
8 Preposterous Propositions by Robert Ehrlich, the sequel to Nine Crazy Ideas In Science, takes on eight newsworthy issues in science and evaluates them for their flakiness factor. As with the original book, Ehrlich lays out the evidence evenhandedly for each issue and then at the end of each chapter assigns each issue 0 to 5 flakes.Like the first book, 8 Preposterous Propositions is an excellent exercise in scientific thinking and would be a good way to lure a nonscientist towards the joys of scientific thinking.I look forward to 7 Scintillating Suggestions or 10 Titillating and Tenuous Thoughts or whatever the next book will be called.

4-0 out of 5 stars Analyzing some timely issues
Robert Ehrlich tackles eight interesting and often timely topics including the possibility of homosexuality being genetic and the possible "benefits" of global warming. The book does an excellent job of giving each proposition the benefit of the doubt and carefully examines the evidence for and against.
4-0 out of 5 stars A mixed bag.
This book does a fairly lucid and impartial job of examining eight potentially controversial claims.Read more
