5-0 out of 5 stars Extremely useful
Any gay guy looking to enrich his life and relationships, and better understand how the past can affect present behavior, will benefit from this book. Written in a down to earth style, Kort manages to be informative without being preachy, and it's clear that he cares deeply about men who care about other men.

3-0 out of 5 stars Psychodynamic approaches dead?
I read this book a while ago and it inspired me to read some of Harville Hendrix' books. What struck me as oddly salient, though, about Joe Kort's book is the large number of people who seem to drop out of therapy with him and go on and self-destruct.Wouldn't that make one look at his approach skeptically?Could it be that the careful investigation of one's relationship with one's parents and its effects on later life is a psychological dead-end?That's both Kort's and Hendrix' approach.Kort's own book, if read critically, would suggest that maybe it is not helpful.
5-0 out of 5 stars Thank you, Joe Kort!!!
This is absolutely one of the best books I have read in a long time.It has been a wake up call in my own life to spotlight issues that have gone unaddressed. The reading is easy and while he does not go into as much depth as I would like, Joe Kort definitely targets the key issues that I, and several of my other gay friends, are dealing with.I am using this book as a springboard for further study.Perhaps I'm not in the same snooty, ivy-league as the previous reviewer, but as for me, I have found this book to be an invaluable tool for helping me assess areas in need of growth and maturity. I am personally grateful for a book that addresses issues more in line with a conservative value system.I have recommended it to some of my other friends and they also have responded enthusiastically. What a great book! ... Really great book that I use in my practice. The copy editing by the publisher keeps me from giving the book 5 stars.

5-0 out of 5 stars Gay Man Struggling With Out-of-Control Sex? Here's Your Guidebook...
As a gay man who came out early, but never had any guidance on how to explore my sexuality other than negative messages from my conservative upbringing, I was like a kid in a candy store when I gained my "freedom".The marketers in my community promoted, packaged, and sold uninhibited, no-strings sexual encounters like cheap lolipops. The "perfect" man was found on every page in every gay rag, and presumably, in every bar or club.An so this is where I learned about sex."Relationships" were relegated to a small column on one of the back pages sandwiched between "escorts" and "one night stands".After 20 years of being encouraged to run from problems into the bed of the next, new hot stud, I realized my life was becoming more empty and isolated. My routine was work/gym/club/sex.I worked only to pay for the gym, the clubs, and ultimately, the sex. I slept when I had a chance. The internet made cruising easier.I spent hours each nite "setting up" encounters, perusing dozens if not hundreds of men online before selecting one or a few for a hook up.I ate and slept only when I found the time, or when my computer crashed. I could not go on a trip without setting up encounters while there, or cruising the bars, parks, bathhouses, etc.The thought of a relationship only brought on feelings of hopelessness. So it was back to cruising. This was my life.
5-0 out of 5 stars Every gay male should read this book
Every gay male should read this book. If it doesn't help you, it could help you to help someone else. If you are spending alot of time cruising, but wish you could find a relationship, sex addiction could very well be your problem.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Truly Revolutionary Book
Not since the early 1980s has there been a book that literally takes one's breath away. Prof. Alexander's new volume is profoundly spiritual at the same time it's grounded in a unique materialist feminism. Its signifiance also lies in the book's manifestations of a real hope. Being alive and politically conscious in the first decade of the 21st century is to be easily seduced by despair, it is also to be absolutely at odds with terrible, counter revolutionary, antifeminist cultures. Not for Alexander glib, soggy liberalism but a spirit that is courageous and awe-inspiring. In the book's third section, Alexander writes of 'returning' to the magnificent anthology, 'This Bridge Called My Back' and, following this essay, the book's most thrilling chapter, in which the writer conjures a new life force, one thoroughly rooted in both spiritual and secular lifeworlds. As if this adjectival 'heap' of praise were not enough, Alexander's book render obsolete the common periodization of feminisms by 'wave'. It would not be innacurate to say that 'Pedagogies of Crossing' is a epistemic rupture, demanding its readers to again grapple with feminist legacies from an entirely new standpoint. If you've not heard Prof. Alexander speak, I suggest you do so as soon as possible. The impact of her spoken word 'appearances' powerful. Her lectures constitute an epistemological rupture, filling one with true hope. ... Read more

Editorial Review

This groundbreaking anthology presents us with 26 essays and fiction pieces that discuss, explicate, and exemplify the always complex, sometimes confusing, and often surprising intersections between the identities of "gay," "Asian," and "American." The essays cover topics ranging from sex to traditional family values to religion to AIDS and queer activism, and are written in a variety of styles, at turns highly personal or academic. Richard Fong's "Looking for My Penis" explores images of Asian men in gay porn; Patti Duncan's "History of a Disease" is an impressionistic, experimental autobiographical meditation on family history and being a Korean American lesbian. While the writers and their topics all concern aspects of Asian American and gay life, the ultimate portrait that emerges from Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Captivating, Enlightening, truly amazing
I was in the bookstore and started flipping through the book and couldn't stop reading it, I was totally awed and drawn by the content and simply overjoyed to see what I have witnessed, experienced and lived in such acoherent fashion.I would definitely recommend this as priority readingfor all Asian Americans regardless of sexual orientation.

4-0 out of 5 stars Groundbreaking
Every comment I've ever read about this book refers to it as "groundbreaking." A cliche, yes, but also true. This sprawling, yet tightly edited, collection breaks new ground not only in itsjuxtaposition of Asian and queer issues, but also in its unique andprogressive vision: a refusal to break queer Asians into merely acollection of P.C. buzzwords, and an assertion of the unique and wholeindividuals who constitute queer Asian America.

5-0 out of 5 stars excellent guide - go at your own pace
This book is excellent.I wish I had found it 10 years earlier - it could have saved me a lot of agony. It explains the various levels and stages of coming out rather than making it seem like one huge thing you have to do all at once.It breaks it down into sections like acknowleding to yourself that you are gay and becoming more comfortable with that as well as coming out to friends, family, co-workers, the world at large, etc.I think most gay people will see themself in this book probably several times over.By the time I read it, I had already worked my way through several of the steps on my own but it was nice to realize that others went through similar stages and that I had made more progress than I had thought. What I loved most about this book is that you can read just the sections that concern you or the whole book but that it helps you to progress at your own pace through the various stages. It reminds you that everyone's time scale is different and that you should only move on to another step when you feel ready to do so.There are practical suggestions and stories of other people's experiences.I would recommend this book to anyone who is gay whether they are just realizing that they are or even if they figure they are already out.I highly recommend this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Still a classic!
This was one of the first coming out books on the market in the 90's when gay self-help started exploding! Even today this is a great book as a first step and initial read to the coming out process. While not a psychotherapist, Signorile understands the psychological effects of the political arena suppressing us as gays and lesbians and keeping us in the closet.
1-0 out of 5 stars Don't waste your money
Don't waste your money! To come out, sit your mom, dad, friend, or whomever down somewhere where the two of you can be alone for a few minutes, then just tell them. Then ask that they not tell anybody else until you have told the people you wish to tell personally. You will find that most people already knew or suspected, don't care, and love you just as much.Even those for whom it's a surprise will most likely not be bothered and love you just as much.If there is anybody it does bother, well, best to know now. This book is third rate psychobabble, don't waste your money.

5-0 out of 5 stars A very moving story.
Damned good book. Damned, damned, damned good book. As I read it, I made sure to turn my empathy levels to maximum and I felt every high and low Jeff McGowan did. Although I have never been in the military, most of what he went through still paralelled my life before I came out of the closet.
5-0 out of 5 stars Well worth reading!
I really enjoyed reading this book and admire the author's courage and tenacity. Definitely highly recommend this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Powerful and Painful
Well-written, engaging memoir of a dedicated soldier torn between love and service to country and the enormous obstacle to that service, known as "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" (DADT). Mcgowan's inner turmoil over his commitment to military service and his awareness of homosexual desire is wrenching. Such existential dilemmas are often difficult to imagine, because sexual identity so easily trumps professional ones. But Mcgowan saw his military identity just as vividly as he saw his gay one to the point of suppressing the latter for the former. I think many of us perceive one's sexual persona as paramount, that it's often difficult to empathize with those who would compromise it for any reason, much less for a military career in which others' hostility to that persona can be virulent. That a dilemma could arise seems challenging enough, but clearly it did for Mcgowan, and the conflict is palpable throughout the book. (I have a new appreciation for gays in the priesthood.)

4-0 out of 5 stars GORGEOUS REPRODUCTIONS--BUT THEY'RE CROPPED!
I can't agree with most of the niggling in other reviews about this set. The images are beautifully reproduced in crystalline detail, many of them in rich duo-tones, and the binding is a beautiful black leatherette with rich-looking gold-foil lettering and line images. The small size is no drawback, either-it gives a jewel-like aura to the whole set, and while some previous collections (such as one I first purchased in the 1980s) used an 8-1/2 by 11 format, they also reproduced four panels to a page, so that the actual pictures were no larger (and considerably less well reproduced).
1-0 out of 5 stars It's NOT a quality collection
This is REALLY sub-par work. There are so many errors in the text that a corrected version is rumored to be coming, and there are more "mizsphelings" than one of Durk's emails! One recent customer review, also peppered with misspellings (so wonder who wrote THAT one,Mr. D.D.) sings the praises of this volume and suggests that because ANOTHER reviewer who panned the collection also sells it on ebay, it should not be criticized...BULL.
5-0 out of 5 stars Small enough to make you so much bigger

5-0 out of 5 stars In Memory of Pierre Seel (1923-2005)
Pierre Seel, Outspoken Gay Concentration
4-0 out of 5 stars A very moving book that needs to be read widely.
Pierre Seel's memoirs of being detained in a Nazi concentration camp because he was homosexual is a powerfull and well documented treatise on what happend to gays during the Nazi regime. I'd give it five stars exceptthat the last half of the book focuses on the trouble he faced as a gay manin post-war France in trying to gain compensation from the government forhis experience, something other camp survivors received. Maybe that's theeditor in me. That information is important to the book, but Seel failed inmy view to give that portion of the book the same power he gave to thefirst two-thirds. Either way, this is a book people need to read. It addsto the evidence to show that the tripe others publish in an attempt to showthat gays and Nazis were somehow in bed together is nothing more than morereactionary rhetoric designed to work your emotions. Because if you examinethe evidence, you soon find that such a treatise is severely lacking. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars TheMost Important Book Of Queer South Asian Identity Politics in the 21st Century!
I have been following Gopinath's work for many years now -- from her lucid essay in Russell Leong's "Asian American Sexualities," to her review of Deepa Mehta's "Fire" and her brilliant and lucid analysis of Shyam Selvadurai's "Funny Boy."Not only is Gopinath a brilliant scholar with urgently insightful readings, but she writes with an exemplary prose that is worthy of worldwide applause. Her studies of music, film, literature, and social events coagulate to form a powerful and cogent argument for thinking about race and sexuality in what she calls a "South Asian diasporic" sensibility. What is the use of such an interpretational tool?It immediately highlights weaknesses in both feminist and postcolonial scholarship while simultaneously bringing these fields' insights to assist in her readings."Impossible Desires" sparkles with sagacious scholarship, and makes clear the cultural stakes for all who see the identity politics of gender and sexuality as inextricable from South Asian cultural production.I am thankful that this book exists, although I am not yet finished with it.I have waited many, many years for something like this, and can say with much gratitude that it will continue to inform my own studies for many years to come.Anyone who wishes to think outside of the box of what they consider their most radical thinking should not only seriously consider purchasing this book, but should also gift a few copies to others they know who are passionate about the cultural politics of women, queers, and South Asian diasporic culture around the globe. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Educational and Inspirational
I currently have a class with Gumby (Soc of Sport @ UCI), and reading this book was one of the requirements. However, it wasn't just another class textbook--in addition to being educational, it was extremely inspiring.I have not been exposed to many gays or lesbians (maybe a few lesbians and bisexuals here and there, but I was never close to them), in fact, I have been exposed to more conservative, anti-homosexual, and heterosexist views for most of my life, so many of the things Gumby brought up in his book were new to me.For instance, I never really thought about how hard it must be not just for a person to come "out of the closet" but how it would affect his close ones.Though I'm not close to Gumby, I learned a little more about how and why he thinks certain ways, mainly due to his treatment and experiences before and after "coming out".In addition to learning about issues on homosexuality, heterosexism, and how hegemonic masculinity can be, I learned more about how these issues are dealt with in the school administrative and sports arena through Gumby's experience. If you are interested in these sociological issues, or just want inspirational/motivational support in coming out as a homosexual, then READ THIS BOOK!It has definitely changed my view on homosexuality forever.

4-0 out of 5 stars Breaks the Ribbon
I am no fan of athletics or stories about same, but I found Eric Anderson's book an engaging memoir. He keeps the whining down to a minimum and provides instead a truly inspirational piece about an individual who would just not give up on attaining his goals, no matter what obstacles were strewn in his way.Sometimes I found myself skeptical at how easily and immediately accepting his friends, family, colleagues and students were of his homosexuality, but I am inclined to give Anderson the benefit of the doubt. He strikes me as an honest man.His life could certainly serve as some sort of model for young folks of all and any persuasions or predilections: perseverence is the key to success; hard work is unavoidable.5-0 out of 5 stars Trailblazing Through Orthodoxy

After reading the bread and butter gay dating books (e.g. "the MANdates") Dating 101 emerged from the stack. Most importantly, the author Jim Sullivan gives practical advice to integrate into your everyday life. Using real cases of men he worked with, Sullivan addresses the psychology of many gay relationships while helping the reader understand what successful relationships and dating should look like. I bought this book somewhat out of curiosity and some because of the other reviews.Well I can tell you what it is is a great book to use to both understand what you are doing right in the dating world, but also what you are doing wrong!!I highly recommend it and have already been doing that to my friends.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Book, lots of great tips
I have to say that the bulk of the material is simple common sense - yet it took reading the book for me to actually jump on a lot of the tips... The Author is light and humerous, the book is an enjoyable read... ... Read more

Editorial Review

James Gardiner's eclectic collection of gay male photos, postcards, play bills, theater posters, and other ephemera is an unguided tour through 100 years of gay male life and culture. Gardiner has wisely followed no specific historical or literary plan--although the photos are arranged in general chronological order--and the effect is striking. As you page through the hundreds of images, you are forced to make your own connections, construct your own sense of reality. Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A multifacteted overview
To dismiss this book as just an excuse to dredge up some titillating photographs for the purpose of publishing is an injustice. This collection is an historical perspective on many levels - the camera as a art form since its invention, a survey of sociolgical transformations as to the perception of homosexuality, the psychological sweep from the closet to the stage to Stonewall to the AIDS bedside and beyond. There are many many captured moments that seem voyeuristic in the best sense of the word in that the spontaneity of individuals interacting as well as groups entertaining are fresh and often off guard. Here is a portfolio of tenderness, of hilarity, and of tragedy.Would that there were more essays interspersed to document the various periods traversd. But then we must also pay homage to the phrase "a picture is worth a thousand words".Well worth your time.

4-0 out of 5 stars We were everywhere
A great book of wonderful pictures that proves that men have been loving men for quite some times.Really great eye candy with a historical perspective.

3-0 out of 5 stars Great possibilities, ultimately disappointing
There are some wonderful archival photos in this book, but it lacks a basic level of "scholarship" that leaves it as one guy's idiosyncratic take on British-dominated gay history.Seems to me there isway too much focus on drag, and a more international perspective would havehelped as well. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars good not great
the format of this book is some advice from betty berzon (author) backed up with related examples from her counseling career and her personal ltr. this book touches on different areas of gay life but doesn't seem to nail down any real suggestions for improvement and the book left me feeling unfulfilled. maybe i was expecting too much, i think the problem is that the book isn't very focused. i did pick up some good advice but it took me a while to get through the book.

5-0 out of 5 stars I didn't waste my money and wasn't misled...
This is a well-written, informative book. The author is insightful and understanding, at times penetratingly so, often drawing observations from both her personal, extended experience, and from the lives of those she counsels. She has the wisdom of one who has seen many social and cultural shifts over the past decade, and this is well-reflected in her work.No book is a magic bullet; this one inspires, encourages, and lends persective.Lesbian and Gay relationships are often targets of disruption because usually, nobody wants them to succeed; sometimes not even those who are in them. The author does an excellent job of tempering one's vision and supporting the need for building respectful boundaries in a loving, healthy relationship that nurtures and protects both people.I highly recommend this book; it was well-worth my time, attention, and investment.

1-0 out of 5 stars Don't waste your money.
I rarely write reviews, but I felt misled by the other review available for this book. The review is both well-written and encouraging. Unfortunately the same can't be said for Ms. Berzon's book. It's full of relationship clichs familiar to anyone who has watched daytime TV in the past 15 years, "alcohol can affect your sex life," "self-esteem issues can lead to infidelity." There are a few gay cliches to distinguish this from the trite of the self-help books available for straights, "gay men are less likely to assume that monogamy is an integral part of committed relationship" etc. These are not exact quotes, but they're accurate enough. Read the sample pages available here. The book doesn't get any more insightful. I'm sure we're all intrigued by the possibility that we may only be touching the surface of our relationship potential, but this book isn't going to help you. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A WORK OF ART
I found this book to be beautiful and profound.Regardless if the men pictured were lovers or friends, the photographs made me realize that today we live in a completely different society than the one pictured in this enlightening book.It seemed to be a time (1850-1920)when men were more free to hold hands, hug, even kiss, without the fear of being riduculed, beaten or labeled. It makes me realize that we live in a society just now when we should have moved forward with our emotional freedom and tolerance of others.Instead we seem to be moving backward every day. That is why I feel this book should be looked at, experienced and shared over and over again. It reminded me that in spite of our great leaps in science, medicine and fantastic inventions, and our recent explorations of space, as humankind we seem to have taken a leap into a world that is filled with hate and intolerance, one that has lost the innocence and joy one feels in experiencing these photographs of a special and more unique time and place. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars This is why "Queer Studies" makes me whince.
It's not that only fellow biomedical researchers are allowed to express an opinion on work such as Hammer and Levay's, but it's quite clear that Stein doesn't even understand the fundamentals of scientific reasoning and questioning. Paranoia under the guise of academia-even when accompanied by reviews that read "accessible to even you"-is a dangerous thing. 5-0 out of 5 stars The most groundbreaking work on the subject yet
I recommend this book to everyone I talk to. It's simply outstanding. 5-0 out of 5 stars Challenging and well done
THE MISMEASURE OF DESIRE is a scholarly work examining the current trends in research on the origins of sexual orientation and the ethics of using the information we glean from such research.Edward Stein, a professor of philosophy, tackles the complicated issues of what is homosexuality, how we study it and research it, and the underlying assumptions and desires of science and the public in the search for causes. His discussions and the parallels to gender and religious freedom are described clearly. You don't need a Ph.D. in philosophy to read this book! His emphasis on respect for differences and a call for being aware of the limits of our current knowledge are refreshing and hopeful.I especially liked his questioning our whole concept of "homosexuality" as a natural or social kind.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars So Many Photographs; So Little Time
First there was FIRST EXPOSURE, then WHITE BOYS and now L. A. BOYS as Sam Carson continues to publish photograph after photograph of the approximately 5,000 amateur models that, according to his biographical blurb, he has shot. As we have come to expect from previous volumes, the young men are comely, young and always photographed in flattering light. Some of them are in briefs while others are in their unadorned glory. Most of them are shot from the front; far too many of them from the rear. Many of them are smiling. But why wouldn't they? They are young, have perfect bodies and-- at these young ages-- believe they will never die.
