5-0 out of 5 stars How many of us have the same story?
I could have written this book but I didn't. It's taken me nearly 60 years to do what Andrew Tobias did in his 20s. How many "best little boys" are out there somewhere? The personal telling of his story - with delving soul-searching analysis and a great geal of humor - makes this a necessity for anyone who has lived a secret life and learned the accepted norms of society in the days when there were no real choices.

1-0 out of 5 stars Outdated and Overhyped
I bought this book because I thought I'd relate with the author's choice of the title "The Best Little Boy in the World".It took me less than fifty pages to realize that this was one of the worst books I've ever read.I can imagine that this book probably made a lot of difference when it was written, but today, I like to think we've progressed beyond the self-loathing, hatred of our own nature, and belittling of anyone that isn't like us to make this book less relevant for today. If I was recommending a book to a teenager to help them with their coming out process, I definitely would not recommend this book.I mean, come on, coming out is traumatic enough as it is, why would I want to make it worse by suggesting they read a book that will only put them down and make them feel worse about themselves?

1-0 out of 5 stars Self-loathing and superior
The other readers pegged it nicely: this book is self-loathing and superior. I read this when I was fourteen and, fourteen years later, found myself rereading it when I cleaned out my closet. I can't believe the arrogance and myopia of its WASP narrator. This book is internalized homophobia coupled with upper middle class snobbery at its worst. No doubt if the author was born in Nazi Germany sixty years ago, he would be Hitler's right hand man in his pink triangle quest to oppress homosexuals, or at least, those too limp wristed and "icky" for Andrew Tobias' liking. I'm aghast other readers are recommending his book for those coming out of the closet. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars What God Has Joined Together?: A Christian Case For Gay Marriage
This is an excellent book for those interested in learning about Gay Rights, Gay Marriage, and the alienation of Gays from traditional Religion.I was impressed with the chapter on What the Bible Does and Doesn't Say.It corrects mis-translations and points out that "the word Homosexuality is never used in Scripture" and didn't exist until the late 19th century. This is an a good resource for Bible students as well.

4-0 out of 5 stars Required Reading
This thoughtful and objective essay on a very "hot topic" should be required reading for all people who have something to say on the subject and especially policy makers and religious leaders.

5-0 out of 5 stars Terrific Book - needed!
Myers & Scanzoni have written a solid middle-ground book that builds lots of bridges. I hope that folks on different sides of the chasm will use this book to heal the terrible divide on gay marriage. Well written, easy to read, clear arguments, lots of information. Glad to read such a carefully balanced book; wonderful alternative to the angry bombast coming from both sides of the argument. - Tom Eggebeen ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best coming out books I've ever read.
This was one of the first books I read when I first began exploring my own lesbianism, and it was THE book that made a difference for me at the time.Looking back on it several years later, there are some aspects of the book I find a little wishy-washy, but it's still a very good book. The writers display a tremendous amount of sensitivity to the myrad of ways shame can affect LGB people, including how it manifests itself in our romantic relationships. Also, even though the authors are gay men, I felt lesbians were adequately represented in the book.I highly recommend it to anyone in the process of coming out, or to straight people who want to sensitize themselves to the harm caused by homophobia.

5-0 out of 5 stars Exellent Resource!
Fro anyone who is struggling with coming out issues, or for anyone who has a gay or lesbian friend or family member this is an ESSENTIAL read. The book deals with the issue of shame that is tied to the coming out of many gay and lesbian people and offers help in getting rid of that shame.Written with compassion, this book gives the reader a sense of freedom and is a gret help in the coming-out process.Highly recommended!

5-0 out of 5 stars Change your life--for the better!
As a young man coming out, my journey of self-discovery started with quietmonths of reading.I read everything I could get my hands on abouthomosexuality and being gay. This book stands out as the single greatestinfluence during and since that time. The authors have taken a careful andthorough examination of the sociology and psychology of shame as it relatesto being gay.The reading is thick, but worth the time to slowly wadethrough and internalize the material.I found myself saying,"Finally, someone who understands my whole mindset!" I began tochange my thinking as I read it. Congratulations to the authors for writinga book so important to the lives of many. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Malibu
I thought that the book was "outstanding"Particulary liked the history part and the progression of Malibu over the years.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic!
Despite reading the "Nice, but not Nice Enough" comment by one reviewer, I purchased this book and considered it for myself. I'm so glad I did. The reviewer misses the point. It's an architecture-oriented lifestyle book about the history of living in Malibu, not a technical book. Which explains why there are no floorplans. It's about the photos that take you thru each decade and each house, and they are gorgeous. The introductory text/concise house-specific texts are well-written and informative. The featured houses are mostly private, which explains why no addresses are provided. The 2 or 3 houses in the book that are open to the public are well known in this area, easily findable for those who have a yellow pages.
3-0 out of 5 stars Nice, but not nice enough
The photography was excellent and commentary was okay.Very few detail images, no floor plans and few, if any, construction details. I'm interested in the details and how to replicate features or at least the materials used....but nothing in this book to help much. There was absolutely no street addresses of the houses mentioned, other architect books do---why not here??? The author did manage to keep very good track of the years of birth and death of the people involved. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Uneven Tales
Like the literary conceit on which the book is based, My Lives is all over the place both in the quality of its writing and in the quality of its insights. For long streches I felt almost resentful at White's rambling discourses on the females, friends, and foes in his life--alleviated by occasional flashes of almost lyrical beauty (such as his description of the Ile St. Louis in winter) and sociological insight. Much of the time I felt robbed at having paid for the book rather than being paid for what seemed like asynchronous therapy sessions like which my dispersed hours with the book seemed to feel.
5-0 out of 5 stars A Brilliant Memoir

4-0 out of 5 stars Disarming frankness of a gay life spanning Stonewall
How many well-known gay people are there who are "out" and whose adult lives span Stonewall -- a Democratic Party politician? an English singer? For a thoughtful interesting life story who is left but Lily Tomlin, Larry Kessler, Ian McKellen, Rosie O'Donnell and writers like White, Felice Picano, Paul Monette, Stephen MacCauley, Rita Mae Brown and Tony Kushner (not that they've all written memoirs, and there are certainly other major personalities who don't come to mind at the moment). In terms of its simple beauty, Monette's On Becoming A Man is one of a kind. For sheer joie de vivre, Picano's "memoir in the form of a novel" Men Who Loved Me, would be hard to top.But for refreshing honesty and frankness about an indulgent gay sex life, White's My Lives is in a league of its own.

There is stuff here that is good, and all of it is well-meaning. That said, this book is very much a mixed bag.
1-0 out of 5 stars She doth protest too much....
...wow, I have to read this book for college, what is higher education coming to?So far I'm a fourth of the way through and have no idea what hir theory is.Ze says one thing and then completely contradicts hirself.Hir Gender Identity/Power Pyramid is so biased.Ze spells pyramid wrong, unless "pryamid" is some play on hir words. One of hir points is that to be at the top of the Gender/Power pryamid you must possess a well-formed, above-average-legnth penis.According to studies on Penis legnth world wide, the Irish are the most well endowed, followed by african americans. So according to Kate's pryamid the Irish should be the #1 super power in the world, followed by Africa at #2. Therefore any high ranking man in the USA must be of Irish descent.
4-0 out of 5 stars Good book but could be better
The layout of this book -- as a workbook with exercises you can do as you move through it -- makes this a very interesting way to examine gender issues in your own life. However I found two problems with the book.First, not all of the sections flow smoothly and the stream of consciousness moments can be distracting and patronizing on a few occassions.Secondly, I think the definition used of "gender" is far to broad to really give the book a solid foundation to build on.You'll find yourself agreeing or disagreeing with much of the book -- isn't that the appropriate thing for a book of self-growth? ... 5-0 out of 5 stars I am a gay husband
I am a gay married man who is at the crossroads of his life. After 14 years of living with a woman who is loving, kind, and understanding, I have decided to make the most difficult decision in my life to date--namely, be honest with her. After reading the book "Straight Wives, Shattered Lives," by Bonnie Kaye,I realize that the longer I withhold this truth from her, the more damage I am doing to her life. When I read some of the stories of these women in the book, I was faced with the reality of what I am doing to my own wife. I have fought these feelings of male attractions for many years. I wanted to be the husband my wife needs. I never meant to hurt her. I take my marriage vows very seriously. I married her because I was in love with her, and I still love her so much. But now I realize that I can never love her in the way she deserves to be loved--totally and completely. I know this because I have read the book "Forbidden Love With a Married Man: Email Diaries" by Dennis Schleicher. In his story, I saw the kind of relationship that I too desire with someone of the same sex.Between these two books, I realized I had to be honest with myself before I could be honest with my wife. I know my life will never be the same after I reveal this news, but I don't want to keep hiding behind a lie. Wish me luck. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Overwhelming beauty
Everyone I know loves this book. The beauty contained in it is just overwhelming, particularly the section "Brian & Nhat."Anyone who looks at the loving photographs of these two striking young men will see a beauty that is really impossible to put into words -- unless you happen to be a very gifted poet! But could I try? Slender, muscular torsos : beautiful eyes : boyish innocence on one page & crushing masculine beauty on the next : lovely, lovely smiles : all the beauty that kisses the world of the young and the adolescent, and then too quickly vanishes.

5-0 out of 5 stars Notes from the life of a survivor
Andrew Sullivan made a reputation for himself by being elevated at a very young age as a senior editor of 'The New Republic', a position he filled from 1991-1996. He continues his journalistic career by writing for 'The Times' (London) and 'New York Times Magazine', as well as contributing articles to a large number of other periodicals.3-0 out of 5 stars Depravity Inescapable
Probably Sullivan's best book, especially the passages on his own personal struggles with homosexuality. Here at least he is willing to describe the differences between gays and straights more honestly than in his other pieces, and certainly more honestly than most people. In my experience (and I wish it were not so!), gays tend to share some unpleasant character traits, such as effeminacy or lack of masculinity, cliquishness, and lewdness.Sullivan gives some societal causes for these things, such as a harsh childhood environment, and the hostility of parents and public [...].This can indeed be expected to produce unhappy results, one of which might, perhaps, be promiscuity in certain individuals; but I doubt that the promiscuity would be so widespread and would continue well after adolescence, in much more lax and tolerant times, and even in the face of a deadly venereal disease, were it not for some strong natural and innate predisposition, taste, and desire.I myself have not noticed any correlation between gay promiscuity and childhood unhappiness-except perhaps a slight inverse correlation. When one considers further the lewdness, even pornography, of even the most well-regarded pieces of gay "romance" stories, of gay newspapers and magazines, of gay bars and personal ads, of gay parades and rallies-wherever and whenever gays feel, not oppressed, but most *free* to be themselves with themselves-one is forced to suspect that some unfortunate natural difference between gay men and heterosexual men must be at work.1-0 out of 5 stars Not up to par ...
I have read all of Andrew's books and this is by far the least compelling. While he does generate some interest in the first two chapter, by the third he is off into some very abusive logic. He has written an important article recently about his injection of testosterone as a treatment for HIV infection and I believe this is changing his writing style. If you compare this book with his earlier ones, it would almost appear that he has become ex-gay or at least supports the philosophy of Reparative Therapy and it's earlier genesis with Frank Worthington and Love-In-Action (San Rafael, CA). I look forward to anything he writes in the future, but cannot recommend this book to any of my friends. ... Read more

Micheal Kimmel is already a major positive force in the area of gender studies, especially when it comes to exposing the important role that men play in the feminist movement. Amy Aronson is also a powerful contributionto this collection. This book is a fabulous academic equivalent to hisanthology, Men's Lives. The Gendered Society Reader gives readers aplethora of resources on the roles that social construction plays in genderdevelopment, looking at it from the essentialist position of biologicaldeterminism to the cultural variations around the world. I would highlyrecommend this book to any researcher or individual interested in recentfinds and developments in the field of gender studies. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Very funny!
A great book to read if you need a few laughs in your life. Dave White's Texan perspective of L.A. is spot-on and absolutely hilarious. There's even a tale of relationships and friendships woven into all the laughter. A great read if you like biting wit. And if you need a gay-themed book for someone, don't hesitate to put this on your list.

5-0 out of 5 stars I laughed...I cried...
OK, maybe I didn't cry, but I definitely laughed.I became familiar with Dave White's writing via msnbc.com.Every time I found myself chuckling at an article I'd notice it was written by him. That eventually led me to his blog and then to his book which I thorougly enjoyed. He has a way of pulling you into his neurotic thoughts and then showing you the genunine humor he finds in every one of them.I also enjoyed the fact that yes, he is gay, but he doesn't wave it like a flag. It's not used to prop up the ideas conveyed in this book.He communicates thoughts that are relative to anyone; gay, straight or purple. He portrays his relationship as something sweet, touching and enviable.I found myself identifiying with many of his hilarious psychotic episodes as his stories of surviving the very difficult task of being thrust into a completely different environment unfolded. What's even WAY cooler is that now that I've bought this book from Amazon.com they keep recommending this DVD called, "Puppetry of the Penis: The Ancient Art of Genital Origami".Awesome.
4-0 out of 5 stars Before you say, "..oh god, not another GWM memoir..."
Really, give Dave White a chance.Yeah, he comes of as bitchy, stuck up, elitist, philistinic, and oh-so-smug-with-his-world.But he has good writing chops, and it shows. For one thing, he's not a walking, talking gay stereotype. He's folically challenged. Fat. Lazy. Mooching off his ever so supportive spouse, morocco mole.I was beginning to think when I read the book if he ever was going to get off the pity pot regarding his disdain for all things Los Angeles, and hey, I HATE L.A., TOO!!! but, I guess that's the point. Most things that come across his radar are subject for scorn and pitched carelessly upon the junk heap of things he no longer has a use for.Does this have anything to do with the review?Yes, and No.Thank your lucky stars that his spouse had the insight to persuade this redneck twanger out of the swamp cooler, double wide world of trailer park texas into West Hollywood and to have the material to write this book.Dave White has a unique perspective on life, and I am looking forward to more of his shiny happy rants.(yes, Mr. White; whether you like it or not, you are one of the shiny happy poseurs that make up the bulk (no pun intended) of West Hollywood. Now that you have my thirteen dollars, go buy some BBQ.I could have said "love it", but I wanted to diss on Mr. White, being that I'll never meet him.Kiss Morocco mole for me.Anywhere you like.

4-0 out of 5 stars Understanding Men's Passages
It's an easy-to-read book for the amateur trying to figure out where the man in my life is going.Since he's still in my house, it's good to have a map.

4-0 out of 5 stars As a man grows older
This is an effort to help the silent sex, the Male of the Species understand the pains and problems ( and also the opportunities) of aging. For Sheehy the first forty years are the years of the competitive male, seeking to conquer in the world. The next years , she says, should be the time for the Men to become a more gentle, more multi- goaled kind of being. The forty plus Male should be thinking and working for a better relationship with spouse, for greater consideration of children, for more harmonious relation to others.
2-0 out of 5 stars Not All It's Cracked Up To Be
Although well written and researched, Gail Sheehy's book was a major disappointment. Having experienced many years of discomfort, especially on location, I assumed that somewhere in 'Understanding Men's Passages' I'd find advice on how to treat my chronic hemorrhoids. Alas, not a word. Clint Eastwood made the same mistake, but he cured his by actually reading the book in one sitting. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars fantastic
this book holds a great collection of people living outside the gender binary.few fall into the trap of political soapboxing and instead tell honest, beautiful stories.i'd recomend this over "from the inside out" by morty diamond if your looking for a well written and engaging book of writing by gender queers.

4-0 out of 5 stars mindblowing!!!!!!!
this was an excellent book that completely blew my mind about what i previously thought i knew about gender, even about transgendered persons. it peaked and held my thirst for understanding, and though it is not all encompassing....it opens the door wide and then pushes you into the deep end frocing you to swim through all the preconceived ideas that we have always been taught about gender and sex roles and identities...every author should be commended for sharing their deeply personal and often touching stories...i highly recommend this book to any and everyone

4-0 out of 5 stars A wonderful anthology
In this amazing collection, various first-hand stories and essays from people in the nebulous area between male and female make the case of deconstructing gender. Including sections from Nestle and Wilchins, who have both already contributed much to the gender discussion already, the book lets those who live in between male and female have a voice. Ranging the length of queer gender from intersexuals to transexuals to femmes, "GenderQueer" doesn't leave any gender stone unturned, and expands the gay and lesbian rights debate to include gender issues, which the editors feel are at the core of the argument and of the harassment of queers and perceived queers in the United States. I found myself inspired by many of these personal tales, and I found myself reflected there as well. The final essay by Wilchins is especially moving and is the luscious cherry on the delicacies here. ... Read more

"Every happy family is alike, and every unhappy family is unhappy in its own way," wrote Leo Tolstoy. Families dealing with a child's homosexuality are certainly forced by a homophobic culture to experience a whole range of unhappiness. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A most important book.
Beyond good, this book is important. A book from the voices of parents who have lesbian and/or gay children. We have "heard" plenty from lesbians and gays, pleading for understanding and acceptance, so this book gives the readers a voice from "the other" side.5-0 out of 5 stars Read this book before you come out to your parents.
I told my parents I'm gay this past weekend. It went much better than expected.Friends said that there were books on the market that could help.I checked out Amazon's selection and found _Beyond Acceptance: Parents of Lesbians and Gays Talk About Their Experiences_ to be theextremely helpful in the coming-out-to-your-parents experience. The bookwas, for me, accurate in "predicting" my parents' reactions, downto the questions they would ask, the emotions they would go through, etc. It was touching, and inspiring as it brings you from the initial coming outevent all the way through to parents who have taken action in theircommunities against homophobia. The book doesn't pretend that all parentswill change so drastically, but it shows what's possible.5-0 out of 5 stars An Excellent Coming Out Tool
This book is written as a resource for parents. I bought and read it before coming out to my parents.Insightful and careful writing to help you understand what your parents might feel when you tell them. Then givethem a copy when you have the big discussion. The authors use loads ofreal-life examples from many different people and situations to helpparents understand and relate. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Give it to me you hairy beast
I love my man Walter (my 'beefcake' and or 'big bear') and so I was excited to bring this home to him last week.We had just gotten into the anal pleasures (I was an oral man) of our relationship, and I wanted to show him that I was willing to take him anyway he wanted to give it.While the positions here are not mind blowing they did prove to add some excitment, some of which we'd never tried before.Walter is still a fan of having me grab my ankles, and I have to admitt that lowering my head between my legs and watching Walter's bright white butt cheeks as he pounds me in the mirror next to our bed is quite nice, it does get a little stale.I much prefer to see his face, especially since his expression upon climax is beautiful. There is much use to this book, if not to get you hot and bothered enough to let anything go (the other night I was so into him that I let him pound me seven times in a row...god was I sore, but it was worth it), it will give you some 'history' (boring, now show me you pole) on sex.I may not be the HUGEST fan of this book, but I am the HUGEST fan of my man, so I'm going to sign off right now and tell him to "give it to me you hairy beast!"

2-0 out of 5 stars Not Impressed
It seemed like a cool book when i was flipping through it, but upon reading it... it didn't seem so great (all the sexual postions seemed like the stuff I was doing in the seventh grade) so don't buy it with the expectations of turning into a human pretzel with your lover...

2-0 out of 5 stars Its a history book...
I glanced at this book, it seems like a history book. It does talk about some postitions, but i suppose anyone could have figured out the ones it talks about. In my opinion Ultimate Gay Sex is a better book. Not only does UGS talk about postions (and leaves out the history... yuck!) UGS talks about relationsips, positons, protection, and contracted deasises and their symptoms.... hope this helps! ... Read more
