A book for everyone
While at first glance this book may seem like it is only for the gay market, I have to tell you this is not so.As a hetro male who is into movies this book was everything I could hope for.Bravo to the author for the research done for this book, had to be a labor of love.Love old movies?Not me, until I read this book.Now I want to see Valentino's films.What sets this book apart from others is the authors's comments, always on target and usually funny.The author's own personal relanship with the actors and movies also makes this a great read - and every one will have someone they would rather have seen in this book - such is the joy of any list

A Labor of Love
Michael Ferguson's "Matinee Idol," subtitled "A Shameless Celebration of Male Beauty in the Movies," makes a fitting companion to Daniel and Jackson's "Bent Lens," not becuase it's about gay film, or even gays in film--it is not--but because it rewrties Hollywood history from the point of view of a gay (male) voyeur.The journey is fascinating.Along the way, Ferguson offers tantalizing insights into the fantasy side of movies, as well as into the public and private lives of the actors who make them.His choices run the gamut of hunks from Valentino to Tyrone Power, and Jan-Michael Vincent to Gael Garcia Bernal, with occasional forays into such related subjects as musclemen and porn stars.There are extra-long articles on some of Ferguson's favorites, including Matt Dillon, Keanu Reeves, and Brad Pitt, but he also takes the time to pay homage to the occasional wannabe, such as Jack Beutel and Rodney Harvey.The text has a tendency to go on too long, and Ferguson may at times appear overly obsessed with the pubic trail that leads from an actor's belly button into his speedo, but that's a minor quibble, and the kind of thing that will inevitably appeal to some readers.Worse is the writer's frequent misplacement of his modifiers (as here on Bernie Schwarz's metamorphosis into Tony Curtis: "Like virtually every other Jew in town, a name change was mandated and he became Jimmy Curtis") and his problems with parallelism (as in this iconoclastic comment regarding "Some Like It Hot": "The film has been deified as one of the greatest screen comedies ever despite not being very funny and my opinion thankfully won't diminish the love audiences and critics have for it."In addition, as in "Bent Lens," there is no index; there is, however, an appendix of sorts, which offers a credit each for a near-exhaustive list of actors, including many not treated in the main text.One criminal, and puzzling, omission, is George Nader, who was doubly interesting in that he was actually gay, in addition to being a pal of Rock Hudson's and a '50s beefcake favorite.But everyone is bound to have his/her quibbles on the point of omissions, a fact that argues, in true Hollywood fashion, for a sequel to the text.I, for one, would buy it.

There are loads of interesting facts (obviously well researched), great tips on which movies your favorite guy will be found looking particularly sexy AND the book serves as a catalogue of new guys to try!If you love movie stars, gorgeous guys or an entertaining celebrity read that is actually literary, you've got to have this book. A Classic of its Kind
Artistry in rope and the male figure.
Bondage and Male Architecture
There will be those who purchase this fine book hoping for only the prurient. That's not only unfortunate but an insult to a brilliantly conceived and executed volume. Van Darkholme knows that a man is a systematic construction of parts. The use of rope serves to identify and isolate the body, rather as an architect plans floors for a structure. Each has a purpose, each has an access. In this process of isolation the photographer asks that we see what he sees and succeeds. From the exoskeleton of a building, we see the flesh and how it is supported by the rope/girders. It is as if man becomes the Pompidou center, all the disparate parts shown and their intimate connections revealed. Finally, the last few scenes are a mute testimony to tragedy. The collapse of the coherent to the cruelty of the people who would criticize that which they refuse to understand or accept. It is not only art observed, but art as applied.

maybe its because i am a early twentie something kind of guy, but i thought that most of the articles and quotes in here were a bit old a lot of the things were over my head, refering to childhood in the 60 and 70's or earlier i think that that is great and needs to be out there but there should be a sequal of more recent events if you are in the age group that grew up during that tiem you will love it. the images were great ... Rewarding
Yes, the text is dense, but it is no more so than the tradition the author is working within.Edelman's use of Zizek to critique the dominant ideology of futurity / the symbolic child expands and redirects queer theory.The book is written for specialists.If you're interested in the field but are struggling with the text, first read Zizek's "The Sublime Object of Ideology."
Important, but...
Lee Edleman's book poses important questions for all of us about "queerness" and resistance to our presumedly "normal" cultural investments in a redemptive future figured most vividly in the notion of the "child."I admire the work being done here, and in particular the intellectual chutzpah it takes to dismantle this dominant ideological framework while taking on Baudrillard, Butler and other formidable thinkers.It is, however, unfortunate that Edelman seems to have become enchanted as much by his own linguistic cleverness as by the important ideas he sets out to explore.

A great comfort to trans people and/or loved ones of people who are transgendered.
I believe being born transgendered is not a lifestyle choice, but probably coded in DNA somewhere.This book factually and carefully outlines the facts of life for transgendered people and their loved ones.These short stories will take the reader through a multitude of emotions, but end at one great and comforting thought...the issues can be dealt with and the transgendered themselves, as well as family and friends can come through this with grace.I ordered my copy through PFLAG T-Net and the author herself, sent me a personal note.I am a Christian, but a welcoming Christian who believes that all humans were made in His image. Because we are lucky enough to have come after Jesus Christ AND live at a time of modern medicine, the condition of being transgendered can be treated medically.While I am not transgendered myself, I have a loved one who I think is.I plan on keeping this book in my library and give it to that person when and if the time is right.A must have for anyone who is, cares about a trans person or who is curious about trangenderism.

Too short to provide real insight
Although some of the real life stories contained in this book are interesting, there is not enough detail to really help families work through these issues. It more of a "there are others in the world going through this" type of book, rather than providing any special insights.

The Best Book I Read in 2005
And the Band Played On is an act of phenomenal research and writing, and a very frightening book on many levels because of the political wrangling, political bumbling, and political disregard for a medical crisis which cost the lives of so many, the scientific in-fighting which slowed medical break throughs and sacrificed lives, and the insanity of national agencies which were supposed to be saving lives, but which in this case knowingly risked the lives of many either because they didn't want to do the work, didn't want to spend the money, or didn't want to anger certain political groups.Gay men were deemed to be utterly dispensable by so many.
AIDS: A Biography
Good stories work on several levels; they are multi-dimensional views of the same event. To honor the 25th anniversary of the beginning of the AIDS epidemic, I reread Randy Shilts's groundbreaking work, which was published a mere six years after the reports of a `gay cancer' first surfaced at the CDC.

What the Bible Really Says about Homosexuality
Good book, packaging ect.. good. Shipping a pain had to be there to sign for a $10.00 book. Would have been easier to order through Barnes and Noble.

Tip of the iceberg in the scholarly research in the subject
Prejudice and downright loathing for homosexuals must have inspired the writing of this book. It is a sad realization, in fact, reality, that Bible religion plays a pillar role in allowing the persecution to happen. Sexuality, at least in the regard of showing affection for one another, should be detached from any religious judgment because it is the core of human experience in which person gets emotionally close to another person and commits passionately to the person. Granted the affection is genuine and mutual, it should be recognized and honored regardless of sex. Embracing this firm belief Helminiak thrives to study, through a historically critical perspective, the Bible's stand on the issue.
Neither thorough nor honest
As is obvious from his title, Mr. Helminiak believes that he is able to provide special insight regarding Biblical teaching on homosexuality.But he makes clear from the beginning that he does not really care what the Bible says: "As a Roman Catholic - and more importantly, a thinking person - I do not presume the Bible has the last word on sexual ethics" (19).He approaches the Biblical text as though it had no Divine origin whatsoever.He relegates God's description of homosexuality as "abomination" (Lev. 18:22; 20:13; cf. Prov. 6:16) to the Israelites' personal qualms about such activity: "The early Israelites considered it unclean. They thought it was dirty. They prohibited it not because it was wrong in itself but because it offended their religious worldview" (63).Of course, God had no problems with offending the Israelites' religious worldview (cf. Ex. 32).Helminiak will deny authorship of a passage if it conflicts with his prejudice.In asserting that the sin of Sodom was actually "inhospitality," he cites a few passages (including the non-canonical Book of Wisdom) and concludes "The Bible often uses Sodom as an example of the worst sinfulness, but the concern is NEVER simply sexual acts" (49).But in this section, Helminiak fails even to consider Jude 7, which establishes beyond a shadow of a doubt that the sin and punishment of Sodom concerned sexual sins.

Fair and readable account of a controversial subject
The "ex-gay movement" is one of the most controversial and polarizing subjects I know of, but Erzen manages a fair-minded and highly readable account of it.The book is based on her dissertation, the result of field work in an ex-gay ministry in San Gabriel, California, and she presents a not unsympathetic picture of the men (and a few women) involved in it.She also gives an update on the current state of the movement, and how it has moved from self-help groups to political activism in recent years.An interesting analysis explains why it is that the repeated scandals have actually tended to be a positive factor for ex-gays, by increasing public awareness. ... Dallas book an excellent resource
For those interested in understanding the underlying dynamics of homosexual attractions, this book will be a necessary part of your library.The author, Joe Dallas, overcame his homosexual attractions and has been a professional counselor, author and speaker for years on this issue.He is well-educated and compassionate in his approach.No one book explains everything on the issue of homosexuality but I recommend his book first to anyone interested because it gives a great overview in discussion of the general issues.A must read!

Butler and Agency
Butler is a difficult author to understand, particularly if you don't have a background in theories of performativity. I recommend reading JL Austin's How to Do Things with Words and Derrida's Limited, Inc either before or alongside this book. She also draws heavily from Foucault and Althusser. Irascible Speech
Several years ago, I saw a film entitled Total Eclipse, which is a dramatization of the complex and ill-fated relationship between Arthur Rimbaud and Paul Verlaine, two nineteenth-century French poets. In one scene, a manic Rimbaud, played by the pubescently-challenged Leonardo Dicaprio, exclaims that "The only unendurable thing about life is that nothing is unendurable" (I may have misquoted this slightly; as I said, its been several years since I saw the film). As I recall, the film was rather silly by and large, although I found that this particular exclamation had the ring of solid truth (incidentally, at the time I had been an autodidactic devotee of Nietzsche's philosophy). I subsequently incorporated it into my own repertoire of pithy aphorisms, held at the ready the appropriate occasion present itself. dilettantism at its worst
The results of Butler's attempt to tackle the very serious issue of speech rights are disappointing in the extreme.With no legal background whatsoever and a myopic philosophical vision which seems ingorant of theliberal tradition upon which the right of free speech is grounded, Butlerprovides an obfuscted discussion (and that's all it is, a discussion) ofthe issue that is at the best of times, irrelevant, and at the worst oftimes, offensively misleading.The book is worthwhile only as an exampleof what happens when a postmodern thinker in the French tradition tries totackle a subject outside the race/power/gender/subjectivity canon outlinedby the philosophers of the 1960s.If you have an appetite for readingphilosophical trainwrecks, then by all means read it.If you wantsomething serious on the issue of free speech, look elsewhere. ... A book close to my heart
The book has been the best book I have ever read.
Where does one get the strenght to carry on?
A marvelous book in which a man tells his personal experiences and thoughts in dealing with a stroke that left him completely paralysed,speechless and able only to move one eyelid. It is amazing that he found a way to tell his story and it will show the reader what a slender thread it is by which we all cling on to life. It is a wonderful moving read and will surely leave one with much to think about. I also read many of the very personal reviews that customers have written.
Unbelievably beautiful
With every page, every sentence, every word....every letter....I try to put myself in Bauby's stiff-backed wheelchair and imagine the pain (physical, mental, spiritual and emotional) he was going through at the time. And you know what? I probably didn't even scratch the surface.

Truly ONLY For Beginners
I was extremely disappointed when I purchased this title.While the book is indeed full of wonderful full-color photographs, the actual information in the book is useful only those who really need an introduction to gay life.Otherwise, the sex portion of this book, especially, has absolutely nothing in it that two teen boys with a tiny spark of imagination couldn't come up with.I would not recommend this book to anyone who has ever had sexbefore, since you've probably done everything that Ford discusses.

Informative, light and recommended!
This is one of the 2 books which are very good compared to the rest. I like Ford's light, informative and slightly humoristic style of writing. The photos in the book are good quality although an experienced gay may not become very excited. The author himself does not find it necessary to provide great details. However, there is a broad spectrum of information which can be very useful for beginners and gays with limited experience. Overall it is worth being recommended. Additional book which I found very valuable is "Scientifically guaranteed male multiple orgasms and ultimate sex". I am sure that you will like both of them.

Transgender Warriors
Although the sections of this book dealing with contemporary issues are reasonably accurate, many historians have pointed out that the history section desperately needed to have been vetted by someone who studies the subject.
The best text book I've ever read
This book was refreshingly factual and frank.I was blown away by what I read about the history of the trans person - especially Joan of Arc!I am a big fan of this book because it has provided me with enough valuable backup material for my thesis.I have searched high and low for supporting quotes such as those found in Feinberg's writing.BUY THIS BOOK - it will end up like mine, with notes written all over every page and lots of folded pages, kept next to the bed for reading regularly.

Compelling.
Jonathan Weinberg's MALE DESIRE: THE HOMOEROTIC IN AMERICAN ART, like his two earlier books SPEAKING FOR VICE: HOMOSEXUALITY IN THE ART OF CHARLES DEMUTH, MARSDEN HARTLEY, AND THE FIRST AMERICAN AVANT-GARDE (1993) and AMBITION AND LOVE IN MODERN AMERICAN ART (2001), demonstrates the extent to which same-sex desire animates American visual culture. That the book's premise should not be widely taken as self-evident reveals the extent to which interpretive perspectives sensitive to the nuances of homoeroticism remain marginalized. Weinberg's analysis of a broad range of visual sources--from fine art to popular culture--is carefully contextualized, tightly conceived, and unfailingly convincing. As a writer, he expresses complex concepts in a voice that is both direct and clear. I highly recommend this book, which makes a unique contribution to the fields of visual studies, gender/sexuality studies, and American history, while exploring critical intersections among them.

Excellent survey of gay male imagery in American culture
"Male Desire" is an excellent work of synthesis, marking a new plateau in the development of queer cultural studies.It gathers enormous amounts of previously scattered material about gay artists, as well as gay writers and other cultural figures, from Walt Whitman to the present -- and sometimes even identifies images by non-gay artists that have some gay interest.Weinberg has a knack for pithy phrases and metaphors, which help to organize his material both chronologically and thematically, and as a painter himself he is capable of good visual analysis and unusual, thought-provoking connections between very diverse types of art.All future writers on American gay culture will have to acknowledge and reckon with his broad conceptual framework.
