4-0 out of 5 stars One Helpful Way to Help Homosexuals and Friends
This is a great book for someone concerned about a family member comming out or one who is concerned about comming out.Persons who are more educated about this subject are more likely to respond in a better way then one who is not educated about it.A great read for people are friends, parents, bosses, relatives, and others who want to learn to be more accepting of homosexuals. As this book mentions PLEASE be supportive of one who is going through the comming out process or who is out and needs a friend to talk about their problems.By being supportive one would feel less down and the bebefits can be huge to let the person know that you will be their to talk to if they need some one.If we become more accepting there would be less suicide, depression, and feelings of guilt.Be supportive and make a difference in someones life. This book is one great resource for anyone who want to have more good information on this important subject.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best book on coming out I've read
Vargo explains the coming out process in great detail; he's very thorough and has facts to back up his claims.Rather than say, for instance, these are the stages parents go through when a son comes out to them, trust me, he describes various studies that have been done that actually document the stages, what percentage of parents go through each stage, etc. He's always careful to describe how the studies may be biased in one way or another. There are more than 40 footnotes to most chapters, so you can go straight to the source for more information if you want.Having some sort of factual basis to go on helped me tremendously. He also is good about illustrating the points he makes by using quotes from gay sons and their friends and family. At the end of each chapter, there are lists of suggestions that are very helpful. One particularly good section describes what characteristics are typical in parents who will have a difficult time accepting their sons gayness.Again, he's always careful to not make gross generalizations, but relies instead on reputable studies."Coming OUt; An Act of Kindess" is OK, but not as good as this one.

5-0 out of 5 stars I found this to be an excellent read
As a young gay man who has come out of the closet already, I found the book a thoughtful and acurate portrayal of the feelings and concerns that I went through on my own.Having this book at that time would have made mylife a lot simpler.Mr. Vargo has written a book that recognizes the needfor the individual to express him/herself, but also recognizes the need tokeep a personal part of ones life private, at least in some parts of oneslife.Coming-out is not a one step process, and this book will help anyonein any stage of that process. If you are thinking of coming-out tofriends/family please read this book. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars A Highly Informative Ethnographic Study
Rhoads does a great job of helping the reader understand what it's like for a handful (i forget how many exactly) of gay and bisexual men to negotiate the culture of a university campus. The work is part of the"Critical Studies in Education and Culture" Series, and is framedwithin a critical postmodern perspective, which is laid out well at theoutset. The voices of the men Rhoads works with are clearly present in thework, and we learn from these respondents the difficulties of finding aqueer identity, particularly in a university context. Rhoads also providesspecific, praxis-oriented thoughts in his final chapter, as a call toaction for people on campus. One strength and weakness is the focus solelyon men, most of whom are white. However, Rhoads is very intentional inexplaining the dynamics of this sample and the implications for the study. Overall, this is a useful work for any professional who works with membersof the GLB population (which is most likely everyone) -- particularly inhigher education. Rhoads works closely with Tierney, so if you've made yourway through all of his books and articles, I'd recommend Tierney's"Building Communities of Difference" for another work within thecritical postmodernist school of thought and action. And if you haven'tread it yet, his "Student Affairs Practitioners as TransformativeEducators," written with Michael Black, is a great (if limited to aspecific audience) piece. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars IT WAS REALLY WELL WRITTEN TO SHOW THE LIFE OF THE 60'S.
I ENJOYED THE WAY YOU FIND OUT INTERESTING FACTS ABOUT THE FESTIVAL THAT ARE HUMMOROUS. VERY WELL PACED AND ELLIOT TIBER HAS EDUCATED EVERYONE WHOHAS READ THIS. IF YOU HAVEN'T, YOU DON'T KNOW WHAT YOU ARE MISSING!

5-0 out of 5 stars outstanding, a very perceptive account of the real woodstock
At a trade show in new york city I ran into a veryodd man holding a pillow that said "I have a headache", that man was Elliot Tiber. It goes without saying that I wanted to read his book. The book is firstrate, to be read with an open mind it exemplifies the true 60's. A look atthe true color that underlies most sugar coated rah rah memories, it isboth the things remembered and forgotten about that zenith event woodstock.I'm prowd to have met the man. Sean

5-0 out of 5 stars Hillarious insider telling of bizzare sex romps 1969 style!
The only Woodstock book out there that has a kiss and tell about the Rock stars, PLUS, and to me, more important, the insider's p.o.v. (uncensored) about the people behind the wildest music festival of the century!Mr.Tiber's unique style of absurdist zany comic writing kept me up all night until i finished the last word of the very last footnote. I was hysterical when I began reading the preface. I even found the dedication page(s) a rich list of celebrity pals of the author's - which went from Katherine Hepburn to the Moyel who performed the Jewish Bris ritual when he was 5 days old!!When I saw the author on CNBC's "Bob Berkowitz Getting Personal' show, with his friend Melanie, who got her 1st start at Woodstock, I was hooked, and ordered the book instantly!I even had an argument at the Barnes & Noble bookstore. This book should have been on the popular culture shelf, between Tina Turner and TS Elliot. Or on the New Book shelves or on Gay Literature shelf.. I asked the manager, who found a stack of copies hidden in the very rear of the store, on a general interst shelf!!He explained that since the cover had the words: GAY MAN, he didn't want to offend some customers!!!Censorship by a store clerk ?I was too young to be at Woodstock in '69, so this insane peek at such a major historical icon, was and continues to be a treasure! I've sent 15 copies as Christmas presents to good friends. 100% called to give me glowing accounts of the good time they had visiting Tiber's version of the festival. Carla B. Los Angeles ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Collection of some interesting gay press materials
Stephan Likosky's anthology of international gay and lesbian writing, Coming Out (New York: Pantheon, 1992) includes much interesting stuff culled mostly from the gay press (including an interview Jared Braiterman conducted with Brazilian AIDS activist Herbert Daniel), ILGA (a nuanced historical chapter onCuba), and a few pieces reprinted from journals (including Ruan and Tsai on China and Joseph Carrier on Mexico). Likoksy endeavored to include material on Asia and Africa, though it tends to be by/about Asians and Africans in Britain and the US. Why he included the samplings of Theory he did (Fernbach, Hocquenghem, Mieli) I have no idea. Nonetheless, he produced an interesting collection of materials. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The Confession
I know that a lot of people in the gay community do not think that James McGreevey should be classified as a hero. But as a gay man who struggled with trying to be the "Best Little Boy in Town", I can emphasize with him.Trying to live in a straight world all the while knowing that you are different takes a tremendous toll on your personality and your self worth.
5-0 out of 5 stars The Confession Jim McGreevey
All of New Jersey and the country were probably anticipating the release of former Governor Jim Mcgreevey's book. Some of the hype may have been due to the scandal involving his sexual encounters. I am completing the book and am very impressed with the wealth of information included.
5-0 out of 5 stars The people have lost a great man
Isn't it sad that we dispose of gay people like they were garbage once it is found out that someone is gay?Governor McGreevey was an excellent politician, with a keen intellect.Who knows what good he could have done for the people of this country had he stayed in politics?Instead, we force people like this to resign. This is a great loss to society. Many gay and lesbian people have great gifts to offer and yet...we throw them out with the bath water. It is our loss, not their's. ...
