1-0 out of 5 stars Offensive, through and through!!!
This book is just rational-sounding rehash of all the military's ridiculous arguments for excluding lesbians and gay men from the military. And being a woman is supposed to somehow excuse her bigotry. It's sad seeing her use the feminist hyphenated last name, when clearly her use of that name is to scream to the world that she's married (read: heterosexual, read: not gay in the slightest). This book repeats all kinds of crazy, outdate studies about gay male promiscuity. She might as well have spoken about Richard Gere and hamsters while she was at it.She assumes that all gays, especially gay men, are sex addicts and never once explains why being a man and having had sex with a man somehow makes one unworthy. This book is ridiculous; I pat myself on the back for having the strength to have finished reading it.Further, the author fails to notice any of the outstanding writing about discrimination in the military written by feminists and lesbian writers.Definitely be ready to be horrified if you ever glance at this mess! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars One of the most important books on Bisexuality.
While written primarily for the professional community, especially therapists, I would recommend Dr. Firestein's book for anyone interested in understanding all aspects of Bisexuality. For anyone who feels the need to understand themselves better, and perhaps know that they are not "confused", this book is informative in understanding how identities are informed by culture. While the first essay is a bit dry and academic, the rest of the book is absorbing, and occasionally amusing, and even inspiring. This is a truly major work. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Mixed bag -- but Thomas presents a rare, balanced view
Laurence Thomas and Michael Levin pose a stark contrast, not because they disagree but because their methods and approach are so different. There'sa real irony in how they approach the issue.Laurence Thomas is anorthodox Jew who places much stake in the religious arguments, while Levinhas little interest in anything religious.Because of this, Thomas seemsmore conservative, while Levin seems quite secular. However, it is Levinwho is against "homosexual liberation" and Thomas who officiallydefends it, though his actual position is not very liberal. It is quitenuanced and unusual but would be considered more moderate in standard U.S.political categories.5-0 out of 5 stars A new look at homosexuality and totalitarianism.
This short book pits a gay activist, Laurence Thomas against the iconoclastic Michael Levin.Thomas argues mainly from anecdotal data from the bible, that homosexuals were never that singled out by Christianity orJudaism for condemnation. In fact very little is even said abouthomosexuality. He then goes on to make some arguments in favor of civilrights for gays, and to me the arguments were weak but sincere.Read more
