5-0 out of 5 stars A honest and spiritual book. All Christians should read this.
Stranger at the Gate was the firstbook I had ever read dealing with the struggles of a gay Christian. It is a touching, wonderful, difficult story about Mel White's struggle to come to terms with his sexual orientation. Anyone who is open to the idea that God loves everyone and deals with people through grace will appreciate the honesty of this book.It makes one think and re-examine old prejudices. Those who are close minded and unable to listen to a viewpointthat may be different from the traditional thinking will find this story offensive. Whatever your thinking, this is a fascinating story well worth reading.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for those questioning gays and christianity.
Stranger at the Gate is an excellent read for those who are gay, and have a Christian upbringing. The first person narrative about how a gay man comes out of the closet, and how he reconciles the homophobic stance of the conservative, fundamentalist Christian church is eye-opening.
3-0 out of 5 stars homophobes are bigots
That is the message of tolerance from many of the reviewers. The premise being, if you are a Christian and believe the Scriptures that were given by God that plainly teach homosexuality is sin, not an "alternate lifestyle," you must be a homophobe. So, I am not tolerant when I call sin sin, but a sodomite is tolerant when he calls those who disagree with him bigots and homophobes.

4-0 out of 5 stars A salient assessment of the politics of homosexuality
Mohr writes an engaging and intellectually stimulating work that examines the ethical and philosophical imperatives behind equality for homosexuals in America. His sound "compare/contrast" methodology of ethical reflection exposes the selective and arbitrary nature of the efforts by certain forces in America to resist gay rights. He lays out compelling suggestions for the direction that gay activism must move to continue to be relevent and empowered in modern America. He neither caters to the powerful gay left paradigm nor walks the safe path of gradualism. His ideas, for the most part, make sense in a way that the reader will find him/herself exclaiming at various points, "Of course! That is exactly what needs to happen."His work suffers in two areas. He is a member of the academic elite in the purest sense of the word. His expressed disdain for the very students he is responsible to teach leaves a bad taste in this reviewer's mouth, at least.More critical to the substance of his work is the manner in which he allows his personal religious views to affect his arguments. His own distaste for organized religion leads him to conclude that religious gays should step aside and not participate in the struggle for gay rights, their best intentions not withstanding. This is an incredibly weak argument and stands out drastically when compared to the rest of his argument which is sound and balanced. He argues that gay Christian activism only invites the Religious Right into the debate in an arena where they have the upper hand.He could not be more wrong, but his lack of understanding of the religious issues leaves him unable to see the incredible importance of maintaining a strong religious argument that challenges the religious rhetoric of the Right using shared values and language.Overall, however, I have yet to read a more powerful look into the future of a successful gay rights movement. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars gay rights from a global perspective
This anthology is similar to many books on gay rights from an international perspective.I found it particularly useful for its article on the founding of a gay rights group in Bolivia. Those interested in international human rights may find this a useful text.Development studies scholars may like it as well. There is better stuff out there, but this is a pretty good book. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Documents from a fascinating legal case
"Gays and the Military: Joseph Steffan versus the United States" is edited by Marc Wolinsky and Kenneth Sherrill. In their introduction the co-editors note that this anthology contains "the most significant portions of the court record from a case known as _Joseph C. Steffan_ v. _Richard Cheney, Secretary of Defense_."They also note that Steffan was forced to resign from the United States Naval Academy after confirming that he was homosexual; the litigation began in 1988.
3-0 out of 5 stars A useful-enough text
This book deals with issues that occured before the gays-in-the-military debate was in full swing in 1993.Thus, it feels a little dated.Further, it's a collection of documents that fueled the debate, rather than an analysis or an autobiography from one of the expelled gay soldiers.Still, when I was writing my senior college thesis, this book was useful to me.Its best item is an affidavit submitted by the late gay scholar John Boswell. There are better books on the topic, but this one wasn't bad. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Scary as Proverbial Hell
In an age where most people automatically believe the snippets and pieces they are handed by corporate media (which in the US is the Right) as the whole and absolute truth, this book is a must read and should be on the reading list of every American. The in-depth discussions of the various far right units/groups are invaluable. What you don't know CAN hurt you and WILL if given half a chance. If knowing is half the battle, then this book is your ammo.

This well indexed book is a window to understand the relevance of the Right Wing Groups, The Right Wing "Extremist" Ideology, The Threat of the Right Wing on America; be it the threat on the Pillars of Liberty, Freedom or perhaps the apparent threat of the right wing on the constitution. 5-0 out of 5 stars Par Excellence

5-0 out of 5 stars Finally in paperback!
This is an extremely well-researched and well-written account of the gay movement over the last ten years. In thoughtful and accessible prose, the authors chronicle the major battles, players, and shifts in strategy and fortune. Looking at political and legal fights at the local, state, and national level, they examine why some were won and others lost as the gay movement confronted an increasingly sophisticated and well-financed religious right. As a teacher of American history and the history of sexuality, I've used excerpts from the hardcover edition in my classes. I'm excited that it is finally out in paperback. ... Read more
