3-0 out of 5 stars Too Many Inaccuracies Poison the Well
I found this book easy and fun to read, and it's useful to have an overview of L.A.'s gay and lesbianhistory, even if an overview never goes deep enough to be fully satisfying. However, there many mistakes in this book, as pointed out by another reviewer; one more for the list is that the Black Cat bar, site of an important protest in 1968 (not 1986) isn't at the address Kenney gives for it. When so many mistakes are obvious during a casual read through a book, I can't feel confident that it is reliable on things I don't know much about. I wish this had been an important contribution to the growing body of work in local U.S. gay and lesbian history -- or, better yet, LGBT history -- that, taken together, will someday give us a rich, deep, insightful understanding of the formation of sex, gender, and sexuality in the U.S.

2-0 out of 5 stars Shallow Study
Moira Kenney's Mapping Gay L.A. leaves lots to be desired. If you lived there in the 60's, 70's, 80's or 90's, you'll realize pretty quickly that this is not a map of Gay L.A.; it's a flawed map of and history-lite of just several social service/community agencies prominent during those decades. She bases her obtuse, academic observations (just try reading the first two chapters--don't buy it--get it at the library) on interviews with just a few people from the various eras.It reads as if she just took the word of people she happened to know in L.A. as the end truth--without seeking further others who might help fill in the picture with depth.

5-0 out of 5 stars Exciting case studies...not a contradiction in terms!
Irrespective of the reader's own personal politics, the highly charged political nature of GLBT rights means finding 'balanced' academic works is incredibly difficult. Most titles either soley focus on the glbt OR far right without attempting some sort of journalistic mediary between the two.4-0 out of 5 stars Both Sides, Present
A well-written book examining the controversial gay movement and subsequent religious right movement in the 90s.The authors write in an anthropological style, representing both sides without displaying their personal disposition. This style of writing is very helpful when trying to establish a position on this controversial issue, or when examining the stance opposing your own position. For a novice in the issue of the religious right versus the gay movement this would be a wonderful starting point.A reader that has an established position on the issue, they may like a more pro-stance work.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Compelling Look At The Gay and Evangelical Movements
A good book that does its best to be objective when dealing with an issue that is most decidedly subjective. The book is a careful examination of the political situations surrounding the gay and evangelical communities and their similarities and differences. The authors don't hold back from pointing out the missteps and faults of both movements, and ends with a plea for less fiery rhetoric and a call for civil discussion and compromise. A must read for anyone on either side of this debate ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Honesty is Rarely Popular
One of the most difficult things to find in the homosexual culture is honesty. How can you blame us?Most of us are forced to lie (to ourselves and others) for the first 17 years of our lives...quite like smoking, it's a difficult habit to drop.
2-0 out of 5 stars There are better books!
I read several books on finding a mate, and while this book had a few very useful tips, it's focus seemed to be more on bath-houses and "campy" humor.Save your money, here!2 books to buy are:Husband Hunting Made Easy (Patrick Price) and Finding True Love in aMan-Eat-Man World (Craig Nelson). The Patrick Price book is #1 if you onlywant to buy one book. I used the information from these books, and havefound my Mr. Right.Good luck!

2-0 out of 5 stars This book almost sent me running back to heterosexuality.
What an awful book!Yes, it is witty in some places, but this is nothing more than some light weight humor that depicts an awfully bad light onbeing a gay man.Outland states that sex is a must by the second date andthe overlying tone of the whole book is that sex is what it's all about. In a book about finding "Mr. Right," I'd expect something aboutrelationships.Seriously, save your money - the Patrick Price book onrelationships/gay marriage is much better, more amusing, and yet full ofreal world advice that might actually work without the stupd gimmicks andmovie-principles Outland talks about. ... Editorial Review

Nolo Press legal guides provide useful and accurate information on how to manage your own affairs or, failing this, how to hire a lawyer and negotiate the court system. The rapid changes in gay and lesbian life in the past 30 years have not been reflected in the legal codes of most states, and without enforceable written agreements, gay and lesbian people may find such crucial matters as inheritance, legal guardianship, child custody, and support left to the whim of a judge or state agency. As the writers of this volume (first published in 1980) point out, "married couples' relationships are defined by law," while lesbian and gay couples have the freedom--and responsibility--to create their own legal relationships. Agreements drawn up in advance provide guidance for a time when all is not moonbeams and madness. Tear-out forms and sample documents are included. Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Refreshing look at one version of the American families
Finally a book looks at debunking the myth that family=heterosexual married Christian middle or upper middle class.Just like we often forget that a family can be just a mother or just a father, it can also be two mothers or two fathers. The author strives to critique our assumptions about family structure, living arrangements, finances, wills, etc. when we are talking about a family that "mainstream" culture ignores or demonizes, kinda like the other reviewer who just had to throw in homophobia into the response.I recommend this book.

I picked up this book thinking it would be a fairly tame, shallow and thoughtless book about a lesbian love affair.5-0 out of 5 stars This one will make you mad, sad and outraged all together
This is a great book! After I read the Introduction of it and realized that it was about two lesbian/gay women, I didn't really care to read the rest. The thing that kept me reading was the fact that it is also aboutcivil rights of disabled persons.I work in an ICF/MR and the storytouched me deeply and really really made me mad at the same time.It seemsunreal that this could actually happen to someone and our justicedepartment would allow it to happen. After reading the book (which Ifinished in a day because I couldn't put it down) I have a far betterunderstanding of civil rights and I even have a different outlook on thegay and lesbian population of the united States.Great job Karen andJulie! You both should be very proud of yourselves for this one!I feelwith all my heart for Sharon and I am praying for her return home.NO ONEshould be denied the right to choose where they live and who they associatewith!Keep the fight going!

1-0 out of 5 stars Self-published, recycled, inept
This self-published book summarizes a wide range of research on the origins and prevalence of 'non-heterosexuality' (his term). Nothing here is new, except Holland's awkward handling of the data. Holland hides his moral condemnation of non-heterosexuality in quasi-scientific terms: non-heterosexuality may be 'natural' but it is nevertheless 'abnormal' and is associated with various mental 'disturbances.'
5-0 out of 5 stars a contribution to science
Facts speak for themselves. And this book is full of facts.Because the book is mostly a synthesis of previously published findings from experiments and correlational analyses, rife with physiological jargon (which is thankfully explained), the book is a challenging read, but the insights gained are more than worth the effort.Holland does make novel arguments, some of which rely on assumptions that might be false, but otherwise the book is difficult to criticize, unless one were to read the studies he cites and find fault with their methods.
1-0 out of 5 stars Another condescending diatribe about homosexuality.
Another attempt to explain away and condemn homosexuality without admitting to hatred and bigotry.Sure, gays are "natural" in that they have a biological disorder they can't help, but nope, they aren't meant to be here. The author's attempt to dismiss what he seems to think is "feminism"are particularly ham handed, if faintly amusing.Did you know, for example, that most feminists are "female homosexuals?"Oh, and did you know that fashion models are tall and scrawny because most fashion designers are gay and therefore like their models to look like boys? No?Well, now you do.Believe me, if you're looking to actually learn something about EITHER homosexuality OR the religious right, there are far more accredited scholarly books to read, and if you're looking for a fun story about being gay (or being a feminist or being a fashion designer or being a Christian -- or all four together in one happy, well adjusted human being), there are plenty of great reads out there that don't lead you through such tortured, hateful "logic." ... Editorial Review

Like those '40s dance marathons, where the winners were the couple that stayed on their feet the longest, public policy change is sometimes just a matter of endurance. Over the past 30 years, despite a steady shift to the right in federal and state politics, lesbians and gays have made tremendous social and political advances, thanks to the unremitting efforts of activists and sympathetic legislators and policy makers. This inspiring and highly readable anthology, which includes Barney Frank on immigration law, Rich Tafel on gay Republicans, Marj Plumb on lesbian health in the Clinton years, and David L. Chambers on marriage and domestic partnership, describes the incremental but essential changes in American public policy on gay rights since 1970. Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars diverse anthology
Browthworth and Raffo have succeeded in collecting queer women with disabilities to contribute to an excellent grouping of experiences and points of view. The diversity of the authors lends itself to an amazingrange of lifestyles, choices, and events. Each author brings originalityand clarity to their opinions partially formed by who they are and howsociety interacts with them. I found each piece added to a larger harmonyand that the differences in ideologies and experiences enhanced myknowledge of women with disabilities. Society could truly benefit by makingthis book a prerequisite for entering the world.
