5-0 out of 5 stars A practical resource for better living
For me, "Stepping Out Of The Bubble" was reminiscent of the renowned books of author, M. Scott Peck, in the style of presenting profound insights into sensible, easy-to-understand language and clear ideas an average person can relate to.Practicing Licensed Professional Counselor and Nationally Certified Cognitive-Behavioral Therapist and author of "Stepping Out Of The Bubble", James Krehbiel proficiently shares a portion of his expertise, condensing great weight into accessible and workable solutions for a more fulfilling life's plan.

Stepping Out Of The Bubble by James P. Krehbiel, Is an outstanding book on Counseling Therapy. Krehbiel, is able to put life patterns and fears into perspective so that the lay person can fully understand the mystery that most think is behind counseling. His approach to show that so much of what we seek answers for is within ourselves and with the right counsellor we can become free and step out of the Bubble or Bubbles that a lot of us are in.
5-0 out of 5 stars Gaining Courage to Live Outside of the Bubble
James P. Krehbiel's Stepping Out of the Bubble was a fascinating read.I found myself underlining various passages. His explanation of how we get stuck in the bubble (comfort zone), and how we find our way out is powerful. It provided me with hope as I move through my own personal journey.I found myself experiencing an emotional reaction to many of the case examples and concepts he explored. He definitely hit some "hot buttons" in my life. But Mr. Krehbiel also provided specific guidelines and tools for stepping out of the bubble. At one point he says, "Courage can be defined by those who live outside the bubble as opposed to those who live in it.I like to compare stepping out of the bubble to wading into the water."

4-0 out of 5 stars Effective and concise
This book is a really good run down of gay history leading up to the gay marriage issue of today. It is concise, easy to read and a great history lesson for those not too familiar with gay history.I would definitely recommend it for those who are not too familiar with the issues surrounding the gay marriage issue-and leading up to it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Im getting married!
i am getting married to my girlfriend of 4 years, and last night was our engagement party. we had 65 friends and family celebrating our big-fat lesbian wedding. it was wonderful. marriage is so important in the collective coming out process - it legitimizes our relationship, recognizes us as a serious, devoted couple, and gives us an opportunity to have a fantastic party. I am giving the book to all the members of my family, and people in my wedding party to help educate and enlighten everyone on the history and significance of marriage and how it is not a privilege, but a right for everyone.

5-0 out of 5 stars A history of how marriage became a key goal in GLBT politics
This book is an extraordinary exploration of the history of the modern Queer rights movement, and how same-sex marriage came to be a central issue in the past few years.

1-0 out of 5 stars Inaccurate, mean-spirited and boring.
This is an unsatisfactory book, mean-spirited and inaccurate. The authors reduce the homophile (pre-Stonewall) movement, the Gay Liberation Front, and the Gay Activists Alliance to a series of petty squabbles. They utterly fail to appreciate the courage and magnanimity of the pioneers in the struggle for gay rights. They fail to convey the radical vision of GLF or the political savvy of GAA.The most important publications, activities and demonstrations are not even mentioned. People who willingly sacrificed their careers for the movement are denigrated in crass physical terms -- as "roly poly" or looking like a "string bean" or a "turtle", or having a "nasal" voice, or sounding like a "foghorn", or being "tight little-old-mannish". There are dozens and dozens of mistakes. The authors seem unaware that Morty Manford was a President of GAA.They don't know the year of the GAA fire (1974), or that GAA continued on a smaller scale for a number of years after that. Above all, the book is BORING.And whatever else you can say about the gay liberation movement of the '70s, it was not boring.

5-0 out of 5 stars Extremely interesting.. A Great Read!
This is far from a dry, boring history. It is full of colorful stories that keep you reading through the night while informing you of the realstruggle of real people. This book really helps you to know how far we'vecome and how much further we really have to go.... BRAVO on a very wellwritten book!

3-0 out of 5 stars Great facts and timeline, no themes or deeper understanding
The stories and the narrative here are great and well-explained. True, the authors don't explain much about where the characters come from and just tell us that the characters are there and deal with it. Another fault hereis that the authors don't really try to carry themes through the book orexplain anything within a broader picture. The entire book is in the hereand now and there is no big-picture thought. It's good at what it is but Iwish the authors had tried to do more. Or maybe they'll write anotherbook...Read more

Martin Duberman's classic text has been revamped in an expanded first paperback edition by South End Press. This new edition is especially noteworthy for its three new chapters: "The State of Gay Studies," "Queer Economic Justice," and "Jewish Radicals, Effeminacy, and the Rise of Gay Chauvinism," in which Duberman takes a critical look at the phenomenon of self-laudatory gay studies. Whether you are interested in gay studies, philosophy, radical studies, or if you're simply a humanitarian, this book is a must read. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Left-liberal paranoia
Do any of these groups and/or personalities sound like radical right-wingers to you?5-0 out of 5 stars Serious scholarship about the radical right
This important book explains clearly and well, and how and why the radical right is such a threat to the civil rights of women, gays and lesbians, and people of color. Hardisty is a political scientist whose work helps to flesh out the scholarly literature on the religious right by the likes of sociologists Sara Diamond and Dallas Blanchard, and journalists Frederick Clarkson and Robert Boston...

5-0 out of 5 stars The Growing Blur Between Church & State
An amazing book indeed.Jean Hardisty thoroughly researches and critiques the many sectors of the political right. This is a book worth reading whether you know nothing at all about the right-wing or you make a point to know.It is especially important in view of present day politics. She not only takes the right seriously in their ability to organize and mobilize but she reveals what their true message is.As a fellow progressive I appreciate her not glossing over the Progressive Movements own weaknesses.Once we truly understand the political right as well as bravely admit to our own faults we will grow into a greater movement. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Signorile does it again.
I have a great deal of admiration and respect for this man.I think he is intellectually honest and pulls no punches.Always enjoy his take on topics and people he writes about.

5-0 out of 5 stars National treasure
Once again, Michele Signorile has put out a collection of articles that express -- clearly, elegantly, wittily and pertinently -- the best thinking on gay issues being thought today. With Larry Kramer and a few others, he has been the voice of sane homosexuality for quite some time, saying things that should long ago not have needed to be said -- but wow! the attention span does seem to get shorter every day. I hope, therefore, that he will continue to say them as often and as copiously as he deems necessary, and for many years to come. I most seriously urge every gay man in America (and elsewhere too) to read him and to LISTEN. He really knows what he is talking about --and there are truly not many men around these days, in any sphere, about whom one can say the same! I do not know him, but I love him. He is a national treasure. Long may he flourish. I eagerly await his every article and his next book.

I am a student government senator at a small community college and we have been given the task of rewriting our discrimination policy. This will be a fight but I am glad to know that our library thought enough of students input to order this great book.I highly recommend it to anyone interested in not only this cause but others. The ideas can be put to use on so many other issues.

I haven't even finished every word but am sartled, amazed even more involved (if possible)! What can be realized by the privalaged (hetro marrieds and singles)and what can be acted upon to alter the inequality is here in this book/manual and I recommed that everyone read it!

4-0 out of 5 stars The two sides of D'Emilio for the new millenium
This book reflects D'Emilio's roles as gay history scholar and policy director at the National Gay & Lesbian Task Force (NGLTF). It resembles both his rigorous scholarly "Sexual Politics,..." and his social commenting "Making Trouble." This book will be both a challenge and a pleasure to everyday gay folks and nerdy queer theorists. The book is a compilation of essays regarding gay rights in the 90s, civil rights activist Bayard Rustin, and other such topics. Some people may not like the scrapbook feel here. D'Emilio chose to start the work with the heady academic stuff and that may scare off readers who will really enjoy the rest of it. Many of the entries are speeches he gave and they become repetitive after a while. Still, he does a great job of assessing gay rights in the last decade and summarizing the struggle over the past half century. D'Emilio is ever the counterintuitive thinker, but that's exactly what open-minded gay people need to be reading. A lot of the chapters center upon boys, but D'Emilio still maintains his status as a very pro-feminist, anti-androcentric gay male theorist. He does include this chapter about his changing sex life which implies that he and his partner are celibate; a fact that I highly doubt. However, his discussion about NGLTF is wonderful; there hasn't been enough analysis of gay institutions. At times, the book is kinda preachy and defensive. Still, I'm glad he opens a space for gay work that is not as light as "The Advocate" but not as heavy as Foucault. He still shows that he's a sharp progressive thinker and many ppl would benefit by getting their hands on this book. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars An eclectic, serious coffee-table volume
A mix of politics and history, this volume comprises four essays, along with 15 shorter, first-person pieces by activists who recall key moments of the struggle for gay and lesbian rights and visibility.Published as companion piece to a documentary on the lesbian and gay movement since 1969, the book is more informal, more eclectic, and better illustrated than an academic study, but more serious and substantial than the usual coffee-table volume. The voices it highlights tend to be those associated with "gay liberation" and big-city street activism, but the richness and authenticity of those voices make this book a valuable chronicle. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book
Now, I come from a varied perspective. Some of my family suffers from this disorder. One of my best friends is lesbian. How could I ever be against the "personal choice" or :predetermined nature" of another? Well, I realized, after coming back to the Church, that choices can be misguided, and indeed, go against natural law. As far as genetic pre-determinants are concerned, there is no biological proof for this. I wish I read this book before I wrote my philosophy paper
5-0 out of 5 stars A Definite must-read
Excellent, through and through. Couldn't put it down. Solid scientific arguments together with fluid writing style add up to a blockbuster...A friend I gave the book to later told me he was still up at 1AM reading it and didn't want to stop. The book is chock full of persuasive arguments showing how homosexuality is not genetic, and how many people who used to be homosexual have been able to be free of unwanted same-sex attractions through specialized therapy. I've met some of these people who are now happily married with children. Get this book!

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent educational resource
Before reading this book, I wasn't sure if the homosexual movement was a spontaneous reaction or a calculated and gradual process of selling homosexuality to mainstream America. Now I know better."Defending a Higher Law" shows the origins of the homosexual movement, starting with Harry Hay and a handful of committed homosexuals who pushed their agenda with painstaking care to desensitize the public to homosexuality. The book makes this very clear.Since the homosexual revolution could not stand alone, it was ushered in by the media, liberal academia and lax clergy. Also, the sexual revolution of the 60s and 70s were stepping stones in this process.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Gays and the New World Order, Dispatches from the Front(s):
Some say that we who live in the United States are much too self-absorbed and pay little attention to people and events outside our boarders. After reading "The Global Emergence of Gay and Lesbian Politics,"edited by Barry D. Adam, Jan Willem Duyvendak, and Andr Krouwel, I believethat such criticism may well be warranted. For both serious and arm-chairstudents of politics, ethics, culture, anthropology, religion, sociology,or modern history (as well as for garden variety social activists, particularly of pink & lavender stripes), this book is an excellentintroduction to the worldwide gay and lesbian equal rights movement.Thesethree editors (themselves writing from both Canada and Holland) havefashioned for us a very informative book from thirteen internationalcontributors. This work seeks to not only give us historical background onnational gay movements in selected countries, but also, in very scholarlyfashion, applies current social theory to these various movements hopingto: (1) see if any generalizations can be made about how gay movements canor cannot develop in a given place, and (2) appraise the accuracy of thetheories themselves (i.e. do these academic theories accurately reflectpolitical, "real-world" reality).Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Fascinating legal review pre-Lawrence.
This is a fascinating book, targeted at lawyers, but readable by the informed lay person.Koppelman begins with an overview of Romer, in which the Supreme Court held that a Colorado state constitutional amendment violated the United States Constitution by providing that "neither the state nor any of its subdivisions could prohibit discrimination on the basis of homosexual, lesbian or bisexual orientation, conduct, practices or relationships." Justice Kennedy wrote that the Amendment "has the peculiar property of imposing a broad and undifferentiated disability on a single named group," and Koppelman summarizes the decision as saying "if a law targets a narrowly defined group and then imposes on it disabilities that are so broad and undifferentiated as to bear no discernible relationship to any legitimate government interest then the court will infer that the law's purpose is simply to harm that group, and so will invalidate that law." *
