5-0 out of 5 stars A must-have for the gay studies enthusiast!
Beemyn has edited an anthology of works from emerging academics who are studying gay life outside of the white, vanilla, male mode. This anthology has great articles on gay black men, Asian lesbians, biracial female sadomasochists, etc.It is a very welcome edition to my gay studies collection.I find myself citing articles from this anthology all the time.I truly recommend this book.I think gay men and lesbians of color will truly appreciate it. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars became gay? a review of the title, not the book.
what's up with the title of this book? is the author first and foremost trying imply that people become homosexual rather than realize that they are homosexual? i spent to many years wishing i were not gay(those days are gladly over), so maybe that is why i found fault with this title.but if i hear some dumbass tell me that i chose, or became gay, as if by some thought-out, conscious decision, flames are gonna start shooting out of my big gay head.

2-0 out of 5 stars Very dry and way over explored
Ritch C. Savin-Williams takes a collection of coming out stories and dissects them to the brink of insanity. If you are expecting to pick up a book that has full length coming out stories or even a good question and answer read this is NOT it.Many times the longest quoted entry is only a paragraph and that just gives Ritch more fodder to ramble on.He goes thru step by step and describes what percentages of his survey participants had the same feelings and how many of them didn't with no end result list. You are made to somewhat keep a running tally in your head of how many had sex with women and of those many how many didn't have a father and of those, how many cry when watching Old Yeller and out of those how many are now in a relationship blah blah blah. There is little or no way to extract significant useful information from this book.It is all anecdotal and dry.

5-0 out of 5 stars Forty Compelling Stories
Forty Individual Stories of warmth and blessing that cover the history and growth of the Lesbian/Gay/Bisexual/Transgendered movement within the Presbyterian Church (USA).Told from the point of view of those who havelived it, one cannot help but find God's Love and Blessing in each of theirlives. All too often, only one side of this complex issue of inclusion isheard, without the fairness of balance. This book makes and excellentattempt at telling the other side.It is non-judgmental, nor is itdefensive. The words written and shared here are done so in love. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Essential reading, gay or straight
Coming out of the closet is one of those things that makes one feel out in the open and sticking out like a sore thumb. You contemplate that you might be gay or bi, then finally realize that you are and come out of the closet.Right away, especially if you're anything like me, that's exactly what goes on.Surely, right off the bat, one will feel that they can't talk on the same level let alone relate to anyone.Out of curiosity, I bought this book, and read a bunch of the stories.Although not all of them are just about coming out of the closet, I could relate to a lot of the stories, and probably anyone that has ever come out and goes or has gone to college can relate to at least one of them. All in all, however, in order to get the most out of college, and an open minded perspective, I strongly recommend this collection to anyone just graduating high school and bound for college.Or, don't, and end up with everyone hating you, for you haven't outgrown the high school labeling mentality of calling every gay man a faggot.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fascinating, Engaging, Helpful
The voices of the students come through eloquently in this engaging and fascinating book. The diversity of the GLBT experience on campus is evident. The book helps provide insight into the various experiences ofGLBT students and helps readers see the experience as not at allmonolithic. I recommend this excellent book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Unbelievable!
As a straight college-age female, I was worried that I might not be able to identify and relate tothe experiences of the writers. As I read, however, the authors made me realize that their stories are simply an account of their struggle to do what they feel is right--a process to whichanyone can relate.I especially enjoyed the piece by the student from theUniversity of Texas, Andrew Gray. His courage and determination are trulyremarkable.Yay Andrew! ... Stone Fish and Harvey composed an excellent handbook for family therapists in working with queer youth.Their approach was well thought out, sensitive, and right on the money.I was impressed with the writing - never losing attention for one moment.I really appreciated their case examples and the way the wove them into each technique/style that they presented.Highly recommended for family therapists but also for any clinician that works with youth. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars What Crap!!!
I read with some interest this book that purposrt to tell if your man is gay and/or bisexual. What wasn't boring, or sterotypical was just plain sad and nonsense. No, Im not defending men on the down low or even denying the fact that some black men have led secreative bisexual lies, but this book and the suggestions for determining if your man is gay is not only sexist in tone in many pasts but almost down right ignorant.

My lover/partner/friend/conspirator gave me this book last night. As he walked away, I clutched it to my chest and began to cry.... I have notfinished reading it, but have only put it down long enough to sleep a fewhours(at my lover/partner/friend/conspirator's insistance), eat and nowwrite. I have not been so overwhelmed with a feeling of coming home sincereading Bi Any Other Name ten years ago. This is, literally, the answer tomy prayers! As a bisexual Catholic I have struggled many years with myspiritual and sexual identities with little guidance from others who couldnot understand and therefore could not speak. At last I have found otherswho share my struggle! Thanks to all who helped make this book possible! Ihope you are as richly blessed as this book has so richly blessed me.

First, a conflict of interest disclosure: I am one of the contributors to this anthology. And I must insist that you buy this book anyway. It is one of the best anthologies on the bisexual experience I've encountered, andbelieve me I've read them all. Deb Kolodny has a good ear and a deftediting hand, and she compiled a superb collection of insightful,well-written pieces. The anthology reflects the glorious diversity of thebi movement, and the unique contributions of bisexuals to their spiritualcommunities. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars When diversity is strength sororities benefit . . .
In Out on Fraternity Row: Personal Accounts of Being Gay in a College Fraternity (Alyson Publications, 1998), editors Shane Windmeyer and Pamela Freeman shattered the silence of gay men within college fraternities. Now they have turned their attention to lesbian and bisexual women within college sororities and the equally homophobic and heterosexual atmosphere that these sisterhoods often engender.Like its predecessor, Secret Sisters presents the first-person accounts of 25 women, along with information and resources designed to promote greater tolerance of diversity within the college fraternal movement. It is still sad to note, however, that the use of pseudonyms by some of the writers shows that homophobia exists as strongly in women’s organizations as in men’s chapters, despite the fact that various research quoted in the book shows that heterosexual women are less homophobic than heterosexual men.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A thesis before its time?
Perhaps, considering a 2003 survey published in the Journal of Sex Research that concluded "heterosexuals dislike bisexuals more than gays, lesbians and most religous or enthnic groups," and that women tended to feel negative towards bisexual or gay men and women alike while men were more prone to rate bixsexual or gay men lower than they would bisexual or lesbian women. The earlier "Dual Attraction ..." coincidentally hints of similar findings, but goes significantly further than the more recent survey. Most notably, a distinction is made between the bisexual and gay male although both seem mostly to be lumped together in social and research terms. Maybe because of that, any serious study of bisexuality in particular is sparse. The bisexual male, then, is somewhat "invisible," accounting for the fact that most clinicial and social discussion and advocacy come from the bisexual female. And, consistent with the more recent study, the Indiana University sociologists behind "Dual Attraction ..." also come up with a reason that the bisexual male is apparently regarded beneath the gay male and lesbian and bisexual woman. The bisexual man, unlike the gay male, so the theory goes, is self-focused, preoccupied with sex and so sexually experienced with both genders that he feels superior to all, even the straight man. Add to that the apparent belief that bisexual men gave AIDS to the straight community, and the bisexual's social position plummets. Of course, the conclusions in "Dual Attraction ..." are pre-suppositioned on the hotly disputed Masters and Johnson opinion years earlier that sexual orientation is a choice rather than a biological pre-determinant. Even discarding that idea, however, "Dual Attraction ..." still comes out as something of a pioneering effort in acknowledging the existence and explaining the dynamics behind bisexuality. Perhaps no other published work has gone so far as this research. But is it relevant? Quite possibly, considering various surveys put between 25 percent and 75 percent the number of men in America having sex with other men.

5-0 out of 5 stars Bisexuality at Its Best!
This is, without a doubt, the BEST work I've ever seen on bisexuality. Kudos to Weinberg, Williams, and Pryor. Finally ... someone who understands.

The introduction lays out a great framework for a book, but the book did not achieve all that I hoped it would achieve.

The variety of submissions which made this bookpossible also make it extremely accessible to the reader. The book details in depth the stories of several bisexual women, and how they deal with their dual nature. It won't douse you with theory, or entice you with too short personal accounts of discovering bisexuality.Instead, you read real stories of real women who fight a powerful fight to claim their sexuality with both hand and heart in the battle. ...
