4-0 out of 5 stars A vivid but disturbing narrative
I read this book when I was first coming out. While I don't recommend "Tom Smith" as any sort of a role model, the book helped me by ripping off the cover of what had been, from my perspective, an entirely concealed world of exceptionally common and abundant guy-on-guy sex. No one likes to discuss how much sex is actually going on and I think a frank admission of the fact that people like sex and indulge in it vigorously is healthy for our society. Seeing how common guy-on-guy sex is even for men who otherwise seemed quite ordinary or "normal" helped me to come to terms with my own homosexuality. I began to view homosexual sex as a normal, commonplace event, as opposed to a strange, removed, "othered" experience. Tom lived a very active, multi-partner sex life which he effectively concealed over decades from his family and open society. He seems fairly honest in recounting his story and he grows somewhat as a result of telling it. I don't really think that he confronts that split in his personality effectively, however. At the end, he remains closeted, pretending to be faithful to his wife while engaging in regular sex with multiple partners. His journey is interesting and lively. It is also entirely sexual. Tom's capacity for love seems about as stunted as his libido is indulged. In the end, his story was an example of the sort of dishonest life I didn't want to live.

5-0 out of 5 stars Enough of theories: with this one you get reality!
This is the only book I've read (and I've read at least a dozen of them not only in English) in the subject which really puts you in the life of a married bisexual man, as hundreds of thousands in America today. Here you get the real deal! A must have book.

5-0 out of 5 stars bisexual ppl can do some...theory!
Okay, I admit it:I'm a gay man that often talks...about bisexuals. But strong bisexual activists and bisexual anthologies have made me mend my ways (or at least constantly keep trying).Plenty of anthologies have proven that bisexuals can write compelling biography and cultural criticism. But here is a unique book wherebisexuals show they can go toe to toe with high-level (...) theory. This anthology was very diverse in terms of gender and race.It covers areas such as Freud's Dora, E. Lynn Harris novels, and Jane Bowles.I would really recommend this book for many a bisexual theoryhead. This book will make monosexual theorists do more to appreciate their bisexual peers. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars ESSENTIAL READING for health care providers and others
This book is a must-read for all health care providers who "take pride in the philosophy that all persons receive equal treatment, regardless of race, gender, ethnicity, sexual preference, religion, age, orability to pay." it "uncovers the roots of these problems, explores how prejudices have become institutionalized, and offers viablesolutions for real change." for members of the G/L/B/T community, muchof this book is not going to come as a surprise, but it is stillenlightening reading with a huge list of references, and draws both on harddata and narrative health care experiences from G/L/B/T folx. highlyreccomended ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Not in denial as much as before...
I give the brotha credit for at least putting a label on himself. In the introduction, he says "I am a bisexual man." That's pretty much would've saved Oprah about half an hour of dialog from his appearance on the show. I mean the man went on and on about how he's living the straight life, but has sex with men and didn't consider himself gay or bisexual. For some DL brothas, "It was the liquor." Personally, I don't think there's enough alcohol on this planet to make me even consider...I can't even type it out.

5-0 out of 5 stars "B"eautiful and very "T"imely
FINALLY! A book on the similarities, and differences, of "the others" is so long overdue. Alexander and Yescavage have assembled an impressive collection of scholarly, activist, and artistic literture that exemplifies the true diversity and beauty of gender and sexual expression. In a time when heterosexuals and homosexuals continue to stigmatize and silence bisexuals and transgender individuals, claiming that gender and sexuality are binary constructs, this book serves as a reminder that the world is not black-and-white and that "the others" should not only be accepted but should be celebrated. Kudos! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The Miracle of Love
This is simply a beautiful book. The format is basic; its moderate-sized square pages sit well in one's hand. A brief bit of blank verse appears on the left page, a photo on the right. Imagery ranges from silken to stone, and from flesh to flame. The images vary: one (p.59) is the black of death, the one before is red death on white, if you think about it. Others are affectionate (p.39), eternal (p.63), or tender (p.36) with a hint of passion on the page that follows.
5-0 out of 5 stars A poetic history of same-sex love.
In 1988, Alan Moore, fresh from the success of Watchmen, self-published AARGH! (Artists Against Rampant Government Homophobia), an anthology designed to fight the infamous Clause 28, one of the more homophobic moves of the Thatcher British Government. Moore's own contribution to the anthology was The Mirror of Love, an eight-page strip recounting the history of homosexuality, drawn by Steve Bissette and Rick Veitch, his collaborators on Swamp Thing.5-0 out of 5 stars An eloquent and powerful book
Alan Moore originally wrote THE MIRROR OF LOVE in 1988 as a response to Great Britain's infamous Clause 28, which prevented local authorities from "promoting" homosexuality. In actuality, its intent was to banish all trace of homosexuality. It was one of many stories included in the comic book anthology AARGH! (Artists Against Rampant Government Homophobia), and drawn by Steve Bissette and Rick Veitch. This new edition of the work is a hard cover book published by Top Shelf.Read more

Editorial Review

When she was a kid, Carol Queen was called "Queen the Queer." "Queer" was still very much an insult at the time, not the term of power and pride it has recently become. Similarly, sex was called a bad thing, a nasty thing, even for, perhaps especially for, good girl feminists. Like other sex-positive folks of her generation, Carol Queen is re-evaluating the range and possibilities of sexual experience and identity. This book gathers previously published essays on topics ranging from pelvic exams, pornography law, the men's movement, sex as art, Madonna, and sacred whoredom. Queen is an intelligent, funny writer. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Great to hear a sex-positive voice
Spurred on by recommendations at Amazon, I purchased Carol Queen's book. Ms. Queen sees herself as a sex priestess if not goddess and frankly I'm prepared to give her such a title - sight unseen. To say her experience is vast and varied seems an understatement. I'm so happy to hear from a bona fide "sex positive" that I really enjoyed this book.
5-0 out of 5 stars a positive and important book
Real Live Nude Girl is quite simply one of the best books ever written on the human experience. Carol Queen is an intelligent, witty, and powerful writer whose experience in the sexual fringes of our society constitutes a great storehouse of wisdom. She has been a sex worker in areas that range from the peep show booths to training gynecologists how to give an intelligent and sensitive pelvic exam to speaking at men's gatherings.5-0 out of 5 stars Food for Thought
The author explores beliefs and perceptions most of us never question, and in doing so makes a clear and logical argument for a kind of sexual equality we have yet to contemplate as a society. A must-read for anyone who thinks of themselves as open-minded and sex positive. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars What do lesbians think of bisexuals?
The author identifies as a lesbian. She went to several LGBT pride parades and asked lesbians what they thought about bisexual women. Her results are diverse; some may find them contradictory or inconclusive.Still. this book has the potential to ease tensions between lesbians and bisexual women. It raises the issue of how women-loving women establish communities but also police those communities' boundaries. This is one of the few sociological studies of female bisexuality that I've found; most other books are the topic are autobiographical.Rust does say something problematic about black lesbians that I think she could have omitted from the text.Otherwise, I thought this was a great research topic.I wish someone would explore similar questions among same-gender-loving men. ... Regardless of your sexual orientation, even if you were just perceived as different or the oddball in the crowd, this book strikes a nerve.Everyone feels they had it bad until you read of other peoples journeys.I recommend this book to everyone.I don't look at it as depressing but it is comfort to know that as a small towm boy I was not the only one.

3-0 out of 5 stars Misleading,But Interesting At Times
This book gives the impression that it has more to say.But it never really does. For some,it certainly will be a wonderful validation of a kindred type of experience.I grew a little bored with each individualized story that all to soon seemed to sound like the next.My purpose for choosing this book, was not fullfilled,I found it witty, even charming, poignant, but lacking.

Queer Japan is an excellent book examining the real lives of gays, lesbians and transsexuals in Japan. I know the editors of the book personally and attended the book opening in Tokyo. I heard the stories of the Japanese women and men whose personal stories are contained in thebook. It is a moving and realistic account of the Japanese people's treatment of transgressors of their mianstream culture. I lived in Japan for 6 years and taught at Gunma Prefectural Women's University with Cheiron (one of the editors); and I know first hand the lives of the lesbian, gay and transsexual people in Japan.

I came across this book three years ago, when I first arrived in Japan. I was reading it just as I was coming to terms with my own homosexuality. It contributed to the opening of my mind, and helped me find courage to come out and start living my life to the fullest.5-0 out of 5 stars A very interesting and accurate glimpse of Japan
I have lived in Japan for more than twenty years and I was very pleased to read this book.Though I am not gay I have many Japanese and non Japanese friends who are, and I have listened over the years to their stories. This book is a perfect example of what the gay experience is like here in Japan. It's very honest and moving. I highly recommend this book to anyone who is interested in Japanese sub culture. ... Read more

I felt this IS the most comprehensive book in print about Bisexuality and sexuality in general.I bought it for my own personal collection, ended up using it for a senior thesis research project on sexual identity and transitions in sexuality, and it became the most important book I used. Its pretty massive and a bit intimidating, but very readable and superbly thorough. The interesting thing about it is its call for more research and understanding of Bisexuality and sexual identities in general- throughout the entire book. It's a brilliant analysis of most of the research out there on bisexuality and sexual identities. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars So much for that...
Mort0mer here, 3 years later. How naive I was! Despite my best efforts, allowing my bi husband to have sex with other men, and tolerating the gay porn, it didn't work. The only relevance this book has to the real world is if you are willing to either completely give up sex with your mate OR if you are willing to go out and take another, straight lover. In either case, you might as well give up before you get too hurt. Trust me, it can't work. So, Ladies, do yourself a favor -- forget buying this book and save your money for your divorce attorney.

4-0 out of 5 stars truly uncommon
I recently discovered that my long-term relationship has two sides to it. Instead of ending the relationship, I was interested to learn more about bisexuality and find examples of successful couples in similar situations. I found them in this book. I have also read [other books]- none of which were very positive on the issue of *dealing* with my personal feelings and fears while *keeping* the relationship. I understand that it is supposed to be "just" sex, but it is never that way for women. This book addresses concerns, gives examples of happy couples, and different options they have chosen. I questioned why a few of the stories were included, but many rang true to me. As someone who wants to continue my relationship with the person I believe to be my "soulmate," this book calms the nerves and sharpens the blurred lines. One thing this book makes note of is the fact that the woman in the relationship is often the one to make the sacrifices in order to keep the relationship going. These sacrifices include sharing her partner/spouse with men and choosing to make the relationship "non-sexual." These seem to be unfair "compromises" that only the [other book] has addressed as well. Hardly any literature that I've found has addressed the woman taking on a lover as well - or better yet, finding another bisexual male to share! I'd sooner my partner have sex with another man in front of me than going off who knows where and doing who knows what.... But the women in this book seem to be happy with their chosen paths and their partners. I hope that with the guidance of this book (and hopefully there will be others like it) we will be as happy and comfortable as Whitney portrays these couples to be. ... Read more
