5-0 out of 5 stars Engaging: You Will Finish This Gripping Memoir Quicker than You Received It
Years ago Rigoberto Gonzalez did a reading at the University of California, Riverside, his alma mater and the approximate locale where he met the "older lover" who abused him. Someone in the audience asked him why he felt he could write a memoir so young? Rigoberto, then in his early thirties, answered, "Because I write about another time that is no longer my life."

5-0 out of 5 stars Sound treatment of the Bible's teaching
Dr. Soards has provided a concise, straightforward exposition of the Bible's teaching on homosexuality. He does so without condemnation or polemics, presenting a reasoned analysis of both Old and New Testament passages. I recommend this book to anyone who wants to better understand the Biblical perspective on homosexuality.

3-0 out of 5 stars Same Ol', Same Ol'
Professor Soards has presented a well-written book. However, he plows familiar ground in his treatment of pertinent passages of the Bible. In his favor, I should say he is very kind and compassionate. If the book does anything, it illustrates what is at the heart of the gay debate in the Presbyterian (and other) church:the nature of the Bible. What we believe the Bible to be will dictate what we believe it to teach on homosexuality. All in all, as a gay reader, I was pleased, though not overly impressed. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars why the fuss?
I cannot understand why the fuss over this book. The text is disappointing: repetitive, opinionated, insubstantial, more like desultory notes than anything else. The images are all black-and-white and poorly reproduced, and again repetitive and disconnected.
5-0 out of 5 stars An exploration of value through excessive experience
The Tears of Eros is a fitting culmination of Bataille's search for value through excess.Although Bataille addresses many of the themes touched on here in greater detail in earlier works (Eroticism, The Accursed Share),The Tears of Eros is notable for the significant amount of artwork includedto illustrate the connection Bataille develops between sex, death, expenditure, and sovereign value. This is a "must-read" for anyserious student of contemporary philosophy and--for that matter--any whowould insist that value resides elsewhere than in a petty, bourgeoisindividualism.

4-0 out of 5 stars Wasn't what I exspected...but very happy with it!
I think it was a good book. Easy to read, and helpful. I found that it was more of a woman's guide. I have read other "sex" books and they didn't touch to much on feeling, health...They mostly just talked about techniques. (...)

5-0 out of 5 stars ALL I REALLY NEED
So, yes, all I really needed to know about lesbian sex I have learned from this phenomenal book. In easy-to-read abecedarian (abc-order) format, it's comprehensible, clear, concise without omitting great details, and can be picked up and accessed by topic any time. The revisions are contemporary and and cool, helping the original writing to extend to queer girls of the younger generation. This is a reference book that I will keep on my shelf and will recommend to everyone I know, even to men who seem to be relatively clueless about sex between women. Keep this one in mind for the holidays, kids. :)

3-0 out of 5 stars STODGY & RAMBLING
Ancient Rome merits a contemporary investigation of its attitudes towards sexuality and homosexuality but sadly Craig A Williams book "Roman Homosexuality" is not capable of the task. Apart from the dull prose and paucity of illustrations. A pathetic eight pages of miniscule black and white photos, including the front cover which is repeated again inside the book itself. Williams actually has the audacity to state in the introduction that he will refrain from translating Roman sexual terms such as catamite, virgo, virtus, irrumator struprum, cinaedus, pudicitia, lingis, futuis, fututor, and fellator. The reader is therefore greatly hampered from the beginning by the absence of a Latin glossary and dictionary to guide them through Roman terminology. 5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent as Expected
In college, I took Professor William's class on "Greek and Roman Sexuality" and looked forward to attending his lectures every other day and his excellent insights on the erotica of the time, as well as the social commentaries. I learned more from that class than from many others and still enjoy reading the books, poetry, and plays reflective of that period that we explored in that class. Williams is a woderful teacher, and this book puts so much of what he taught to his classes into the written word..its an excellent reference material I would recommend to all.

5-0 out of 5 stars All information needed.
I have found this book, when added with K.J. Dover's Greek Homosexuality, to offer me all the information I needed on the subject of homosexuality inClassical Antiquity. Williams does not make enough, perhaps, of the factthat the Romans' low estimate of any male citzen performing the passiverole in sexual intercourse - that they equalled with adultery and rape inthe single legal category of *strupum*, in contrast to the Classical AgeAthenians' idealization of the supposedly pure love between the younger*eromenos* and his *erastes* had much to do with the realities of Rome asan oligarchical political system where no member of the ruling oligarchywas supposed to submit to another, in contrast to the more democratic andegalitarian Athenian mores, where you were supposed to learn to obey inorder to learn to give orders. But then, this is a conclusion that wasalready there to be drawn. Superb book, highly recommended. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars An EXCELLENT book that has GIVEN ME HOPE and some practical steps in my own walk out of lesbianism
The writers shares exerpts from different people's life experiences from such an honest, transparent, and thought-provoking point of view. This has helped me in my walk out of lesbianism.Identifying triggers, coping with sexual temptation, and practical tips and little stories are interspearsed throughout this book.I know I've had hurts and lots of pain and lots of anger.I felt very encouraged and found it to be very relate-able.If you're looking for honesty, hope, and some practical steps out this is a book for you.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not new and not about joy
Readers who hope to find in this book a how-to manual of gay sex will be very sadly disappointed. Rather it tries (unsuccessfully in my opinion) to be an "encyclopedic" reference from A to Z (with the emphasis on zzzzzz) on the "joyful" life of gay sex, and even then, the book turns out to be only alphabetized, not encyclopedic. Even on those terms it fails. E.g., how can a section about wills be part of the "joys". If anything, wills are a problem about being gay, and irrelevant to gay sex, joys or not. I would say that this book is not at all directed towards gays, who I'm sure will know much , much, much more about the subject than has been written here, but towards those who have a prurient interest, are mere gawkers, or who are timidly venturing towards it. If that is the case, none of these groups would be well-served by this book. The text is antiseptic, pedestrian, and boring, and the illustrations are grotesque, not to mention degrading.

5-0 out of 5 stars Bookshop 'Reading Room'
I found this book in a bookshop near my university, waited till other customers had moved on and took it from the shelf, reading it furtively, hoping noone would notice, but aroused by the illustrations. Later I had the same experience elsewhere with Gordon Merrick's 'Perfect Freedom', but then my book opened automatically to the juicy bits where other readers had been there before me,.......I suppose these are the well-thumbed copies booksellers could never move in the days when embarrassment made buying such books a heart-stopping experience, like buying condoms in a small town dispensary......the internet age has changed a lot.....the book is now just one of many, when once it was the one and only......so the memories make it more interesting than the content

5-0 out of 5 stars MAGNIFICANT ILLUSTRATIONS./FOUND MYSELF
In the magnificant illustrations I "found myself" from memories of myself as an adolescent to acceptance of my adult self. The book is pre-AIDS and therefore its information is not up-to-date but the artistically erotic illustrations's communicate a "lovingness". Reading this book for the first time in the mid- 80's raised my homosexual energy from phallic to romantic. This book is for any gay who wants to feel eternally free. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Not Bad At All
I can't stand Sullivan's right-wing political views, but I commend him on his pro-gay marriage position. The homophobes out there have never been able to answer this question: Why shouldn't I be gay? What, in other words, is wrong exactly with being gay? I'm an atheist, so shallow religious rantings aren't going to work with me. I love being a gay man and I wouldn't want it any other way. I have a great life AS a gay man and I couldn't imagine "going straight" without, at the same time, being totally miserable. But the point is, gay men not only have the right to be gay, but should be proud of the fact that they are gay. All straight people have is their absurd fundamentalist ideology. To an atheist, their hateful rhetoric means absolutely nothing. The straight people are going to have come up with a better line of argument than something about my not being "saved" or whatever. But that's not very likely.

2-0 out of 5 stars Well written but not effective
I love Andrew's blog but I respectfully differ with his views on gay marriage. He fails to recognize that it isn't only Christians who oppose gay marriage and he fails to debunk the best idea for traditional marriage, linking kids to their parents.

4-0 out of 5 stars Useful, but sometimes tedious
The book is indeed well-balanced, and comprehensive (considering the dearth of information and research on this subject and its relatively recent rise to a prominent place in public discussion). Highly recommended for anyone seeking greater understanding of this issue. Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars TRANSGENDERED EVALUATION
I found this book to be very informative and interesting. But, it is written in medical clinical terminology too much, which is too deep for the average person. There could have been more exposure on the power of phytoestrogens and the power of positive suggestion; in order for the male to feminize his body and mind that much more. All medical doctors are partial to what they know, and also they are very pedantic. Also, there could be more positive encouragement of feminization with the general male population.

2-0 out of 5 stars You can't judge a book by its cover
Sheila Kirk's editorial review here at Amazon wholly misrepresents her book Feminizing Hormones for the Transgendered.By failing to identify her intended audience in her product description she oversells what she has to offer. The book is at best a fair basic primer for those who might be considering beginning hormone replacement therapy, or for someone merely curious about it, but it's of little use to anyone who has already begun HRT and is looking for hard data to help understand lab results and an endocrinologist's actions.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of Radclyffe's Best...
Beautiful, brilliant surgeon Saxon Sinclaire is more than angry at her superiors. In an effort to drum up publicity for their hospital, they have agreed to allow a film crew to do a documentary on the first year of a surgical intern. In this case, it's one of Sax's interns. In her first meeting with producer/director Jude Castle, Sax is rude and only marginally cooperative. The two women are constantly at odds, but they also feel an almost irrational attraction.
5-0 out of 5 stars This a Bright Entry in Radclyffe's List
Saxon Sinclair is a brilliant trauma chief is told she will allow a documentary filmmaker, Jude Castle, into her trauma unit. The sparks fly between the two women.
5-0 out of 5 stars Medical dramas don't get better than this!
What do I love about this medical drama--besides everything? There are so many things but I would have to say how utterly romantic it is--and I am not even talking about the sizzling sex. The way Sax and Jude look into each other's eyes, the way the color of their eyes change depending on their moods, the way their body language speaks volumes filling in where the dialogue leaves off, and the way I get so caught up in the action that I don't even realize that the world around me exists. Radclyffe is adept at creating a complete picture while allowing the reader's imagination to fill in the rest. It is a fine balance between telling too much and too little. I think Rad gets it just right. I have a couple of references but I don't want to cite text and include spoilers. You will have to trust me on this.

I've never read this book, but I'm very disturbed that it came up under a search of mentally ill parents.I think amazon should be ASHAMED to have classified homosexuality as a mental illness.I am SHOCKED!

5-0 out of 5 stars It's about time!
I loved this book.I found that it's something so new over the past few years, as far as something that people talk about. We've come so far relative to diversity, acceptance, and sharing our personal stories, that a book like this is a breath of fresh air.I'm happy that it talks about things from a child's perspective, and doesn't try to be too clinical or matter-of-fact.My children loved the book (they're teens....and I'm a gay dad) and it put all of the challenges, blessings, and difficulties into perspective for them. We're all walking a different path, and it's great to see what others (and their children have gone through.

4-0 out of 5 stars Brilliant and helpful
A wonderful and enlightening book, bringing some sense of normalcy to a perfectly normal topic. Effective parenting is about love, after all, and not about the sexual plumbing of the persons doing the parenting. I only wish that the authors had gathered a more comprehensive list of educational resources to help us present a balanced view of the world, and of history, to our kids. ...But overall, a splendid book!

4-0 out of 5 stars Overall, a great book!
This book was informative and an easy read.As a lesbian parent of a small child,I was really looking for a book on lesbian parenting. This book includes a great deal about becoming a parent so I would recommend this book to gay or lesbian folks who are thinking about becoming parents as the chapters on adoption, co-parenting, donor insemination, etc. were well written and seemed to cover just about every aspect that goes into the decision to be a parent and how to become one.Even though only 1/2 of the book covered actual parenting and some of it included the authors heartbreaking personal experiences, I found the information to be very helpful to me as a lesbian parent.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent resource for gay guys considering parenthood.
A great way to start the process on becoming a gay parent (there aren't many books/resources out there for gay guys considering parenting). I found the sections on the different ways to become a parent (international adoption, local open adoptions, birth parents, etc.) to be a very helpful starting point. The storiesfrom friends of the author really helped me and my partner through the concerns and jitters we had. I was especiallygrateful for the chapters on dealing with parents and others when letting them in on the news. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars The "Problem" with Conceptual Schemes, New and Old
The August 11, 1999 "a reader" comments about Sedgwick's prose is especially valuable. The tendency to "abuse" language, in J. L. Austin's famous phrase, seems pronounced in Francophile and postmodernist writings, as if obscuritanism is a measure of profundity rather than a measure of obscuritanism. Several critics have justly claimed that unintelligibile writing and ideation only expose unintelligibility.

Ugh, a tough, tough book to read.I found myself really bogged down by this book and looked more forward just to getting through it than actually getting anything out of it.Sedgewick's style is definately not for me, but if you can get past the thick writing style you may be able to glean some interesting points from it.

5-0 out of 5 stars ...Theory should always be so good
According to the writer Avital Ronell, in his youth Kant wanted to be a poet.Fortunately for us, perhaps, he turned to philosophy instead.Through this turn Kant ended up setting the standard towards which most academics currently strive: a zero-degree style (which Lyotard both attempts to mime and identifies as naive in the preface to The Differend). What this does, essentially, is provide the rather stupid (and perpetually misrecognized) effect that an author is objective, sound, and important. Most of the time, authors are none of these.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A fascinating introduction to bisexual feminism
In "Bi Lives: Bisexual Women Tell Their Stories ", Kata Orndoff interviews a diverse group of bisexual women about their sexual identities and experiences, challenging the bigotry and myths perpetuated by both the radical right and sadly enough, certain elements of cultural feminism. How does biphobia manifest itself in the lives of bisexual women? Just as bi men have been scapegoated for transmitting hiv/aids into the female heterosexual population, bisexual women have been similarly blamed for bringing hiv/aids into the lesbian community (an insidious variation of the 1970's idea of bisexual women contaminating the lesbian community with "male energy".) Moreover, bisexual women are often told that they are actually confused lesbians (or confused heterosexuals), that they are lesbians trying to maintain some level of heterosexual privilege, that they are anti-feminist for sleeping with men, or that their bisexuality is an expression of "false consciousness" which could be overcome with the proper lesbian feminist indoctrination. As independent female sexuality is generally demonized in our sexist, erotophobic society, bisexual women are furthermore simply dismissed or pathologized. For feminists, lgbt activists, bi-curious individuals, and bisexual allies interested in issues of female sexual autonomy, this is an interesting text. Especially useful are the safer sex guidelines provided by Robyn Ochs. That said, I do wish that Orndoff would have interviewed at least one bisexual transgendered woman, but despite this oversight, this is anyway a compelling and informative sociological study.

4-0 out of 5 stars Interesting reading.....
I enjoyed this book quite a bit.The questions were a bit repetative, butthat wasnt necessarily Bad, as the reader gets to see how different eachwoman's answers were.4-0 out of 5 stars Think Bisexuality is Easily Defined?
In this book, I discovered the various ways women define their bisexuality: some by the capability of loving people regardless of gender, some by being attracted to people of either gender, and some by experience. It also showed that bisexuality is not a "new" thing, as manywould have us believe. The ages of these women range from 21 to (if Irecall correctly) late 50's.One woman is handicapped, two others are in athree-way marriage (to each other, with a man), one identifies as a lesbian(though acknowledges that she is attracted to both sexes) and doesn't trustwomen who identify strongly as bisexual. If you want to see the entirerainbow of sexuality, read this book.If you want to have your sexualityaffirmed, read this book.If you are just plain curious . . . read thisbook. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Don't believe everything you read
This book, while it comes across as quite erotic, reads like a collection of letters to Penthouse.None of the stories ring true.None of the stories have that uncomfortable fumbling of first encounters, the nervousness of being caught. It reads like straight out porn.Fine.This "gets the job done" if you are looking for a literary Viagra but in no way are any of these stories any more than out and out fiction. Not a single word jumps off the page with any ounce of authenticity. They all seem plausible, but the manner in which they are written (and in some cases exagerated) made me feel completely manipulated. No one I know has ever had a first encounter with a "straight guy" that ever sounded like these.

"Jack Hart, best known for his collections of real-life sexual adventures between men My First Time, My Biggest O, and Heat, has compiled a new anthology in which gay men describe in their own words the couplings they've had with men who did not seem on first appearance to be open to having gay sex. Among the surprising seductions detailed in this collection: A man initiates into gay sex his small town's biggest womanizer; a man drafted to entertain the groom-to-be during a bridal shower discovers just how open the upcoming marriage will be; a reporter interviewing a straight TV star (no names!) comes back with a titillating story; a military man tells of the one time in his career he let down his sexual guard--for the husband of his best friend; and an inexperienced college freshman finds that a straight-acting frat boy is both open-minded and openmouthed. Straight? is Jack Harts freshest collection and points out that indeed truth can be stranger--and hotter--than fiction. Review courtesy of Alyson Publications"-- zebraz

4-0 out of 5 stars The mind games some guys play!
"Straight?" serves up some 50 true accounts of sexually straight-identified men who explore their "curiosity" about same-sex encounters and, in the process, challenges the validity of labels like "straight" and "gay." In most of these true narratives, the common thread is less the sexual labels we and others apply to us individually and more man's basic need (carnal or otherwise) for the touch of someone of the same gender. As someone myself identified as "straight" with some sexual experiences with other "straight" men, the turn-on is less sexual and more the feeling of simply being wanted. The stories in this compilation do more than offer some sizzling hot descriptions of man-to-man sex. They also ask the fundamental question if labels ("straight," "gay," "bi") are even relevant, why it seems (on both a private and societal level) that anything related to homosexuality prompts serious questions of one's sexual preferences and why anything related to same-gender interaction has anything to do with sex at all. In the end, does it really matter? For anyone not interested in such a debate, however, and is looking for nothing more than steamy literature, this book has just about anything that caters to any taste. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Things We Must Not Forget
This book made it clear that the performance of homosexual acts is sinful. Those with same-sex attractions carry daily the cross of a disordered condition they did not choose and science still doesn't know the cause of. Homosexuals who takes seriously the requirement to order their lives as best they can to live celibately should never forget that they are guilty of no sin for making these efforts, and are as infinitely loved by God as are all human beings. You do the best you can with the "hand you're dealt" in life, and in the end all will be well, exceedingly well.
5-0 out of 5 stars This book is a gift.
I have really struggled with my thoughts and feelings about how to respond to a loved one who recently announced they were gay. I spent many hours considering how to engage in a way that was both loving and true to my own, strongly held, Christian beliefs.
