5-0 out of 5 stars Chix luv dix too!
I'm not [...], and neither is my girlfriend, but I ordered this book as a gift to her and she was very pleased indeed! She now keeps it stashed by her bedside for those lonely evenings when I'm not available. I learned of her interest in full-frontal male nudes when she complained repeatedly that there is obvious discrimination against males in movies and other media, given the fact that female full-frontals are so commonplace, and their male counterparts almost impossible to come by. Well, she's right, and this book rights that wrong! Buy it for your girlfriend for Valentine's Day.

5-0 out of 5 stars Striking Photographs
From the largest publisher of gay male related books, Bruno Gmunder, comes this photographic essay dedicated to male 'private parts.' The photographer, Giovanni, is the pseudonym of a world-famous photographer who works in the international fashion scene. In most of his work the central theme is located a few feet higher up on the body. In this book basically just the bare nude torso is shown. Most of the book is in exquisitely lighted and printed black and white. Indeed the printing quality is so high that you might think these are true photographs rather than having been printed. There are, however, a couple of sections printed in full color.
5-0 out of 5 stars Appreciation for the male appendage
Stunning photography and exceptional models set this book apart from similar publications.Definitely a worthwhile book. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Great Little Guide to Broadway
Seth Rudetsky is fiercely talented, an encyclopedia of Broadway facts and lore, and (most importantly) hysterically funny. He also knows everyone in the business and is the King (Queen?) of Broadway benefits and concerts.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great tips from a true insider!
This book gives you every inside tip (okay, ALMOST every tip) you need to know about theater in New York.It also happens to be a very entertaining read.Rudetsky's wit shines through as he gives you a history of "essential" Broadway. If you're a fan of theater, this is a must read!!

5-0 out of 5 stars AmAHzing...but what would you expect from this ultimate insider?
If you're addicted to Seth's Big Fat Broadway on Sirius (channel 77--Broadway's Best) you MUST have this book.Seth is FIERCE!Worth the price for the website information alone.

5-0 out of 5 stars Professional Photographs in a soft core environment
Another classic book from Bruno Gmunder, the world's leader in gay literature. Bel Ami is a Prague-based film company established by George Duroy, who is Slovak. "Bel Ami" means "beautiful friend" in French. Bel Ami specializes in films showing young men in erotic settings. They range from soft to hard core.
4-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful Guys
Beautiful guys at play, sexual and otherwise. Beautiful bodies to look at in various stages of arousal but no overt sexual acts. Intimate love scenes w/ plenty of body contact, to include genital contact. The only negative was that some of these guys were just a little too mature to qualify for the term "Boys." but they were still beautiful men.

5-0 out of 5 stars I agree - breathtaking!
This is a gorgeous book!Granted, ther Boys of Bel Ami are gorgeous, and this book does a great job capturing their beauty and charm.I highly recommend it to all gay men, and I doubt that you will be disappointed. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful, Sad, Funny, and True
Jennifer Finney Boylan puts a human face on a condition that many of us only know from TV or other stories. Her memior is truly one of the most engaging, thoughtful, and honest stories I have ever read. As someone who had never given much thought to the transgendered society, I walked away from this book with a new understanding and respect for the bravery in which transgendered people must ultimately possess in order to become who they are supposed to be.

5-0 out of 5 stars Simply the BEST!
This is just about the BEST book ever written in the entire history of the human race! Whether or not you are a sociologist, sexologist, or just someone looking for an incredible piece of scientific work ... this is the book you need to read. I read it cover-to-cover without even putting it down, it's that good. 4-0 out of 5 stars Impressive research, and ethicists' tempest in a teapot
This book is the first and one of the few and to study male-male sexual behavior as it occurs between men who do not primarily identify themselves as being homosexual or bisexual.Previous studies had been largelyclinical, based on the reports of individuals undergoing psychotherapy, andmost ethnographic studies have been of more or less gay-identifiedcommunities -- gay bars, gay organizations, gay neighborhoods -- or maleprostitutes. This was the first to study men who have sex with men but whomostly have lives as apparently ordinary, married heterosexuals. The studyrevealed some surprising facts about such men, and fired a controversy oversociological ethics and propriety that continues to this day.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars profound effect
This book is incredible and really displays the obstacles that many people have to overcome just to be an individual in this country.LOVED IT!

5-0 out of 5 stars An valuable AND enjoyable memoir for parents and educators
I found this book to be a wonderful story, which demonstrates the horror that many gay children face as they pass through our school systems. With adequate education and staff training, there is hope that future generations will not have to face the same conflicts of prior generations.Through the support of Kevin's mother, Kevin was fortunate to have the chance to continue his education. And the book makes one realize how fortunate we are to have Kevin along with many others in this country fighting homophobia for our future generations. This book was truly enjoyable as well as very informative.I recommend it very highly.

I found Kath Westons book "Families We Choose:lesbians, gays, kinship" to be a very interesting and informative book. This book brought many issues to the table regarding the idea of a family. What is afamily?family is not solely limited to biology. This book explored theidea of kinship in lesbian and gay relationships and the family that isformed within this community. Also, the difference and the importance of"biological" family vs. chosen family and which becomes or ismore important based on acceptance. This book explores issues concerningthe lesbian and gay community in regards to raising children and creatingfamilies of their own in the nineties incorporating both biological andchosen families. 5-0 out of 5 stars A must buy for someone who dislike's their Homosexuality
Im 27 years old and a patient in therapy for almost 1 year now. I found this book useful and encouraging because it supports my thoughts that ( I never accepted nor will i accept being Gay).
1-0 out of 5 stars This book should be burned
The people who write this sort of gay-bashing stuff under the guise of clinical therapy should lose thier credentials. This is damaging.Go buy last season's DVD of "Queer Eye for the Straight Guy" and tell your mom you'll be her fashion consultant forever.Don't buy this book.

1-0 out of 5 stars Reparative Therapy is harmful, I've been there
I was heavily involved in reparative therapy for many years.I was their perfect candidate (virgin, "straight-acting", etc).No one wanted to change more than me, and no one worked harder than me.

2-0 out of 5 stars Lacanian response
When I first read this book, I was pleased to see that Butler was returning to the problem of "gender performativity" she raised in *Gender Trouble.*I do believe that she was misunderstood as having claimed in *Gender Trouble* that the performativity constitutive of gender implies an infinite "plasticity" or freedom from the constraints of gender. Yet after reading *Bodies,* I felt that she evaded the question with which she opened the book:in what way can the "materiality" of anatomical sex be construed as a "discursive limit" to ideological constructions of gender without being understood as existing outside of discourse?I believe that Butler is ultimately indecisive about the status of the materiality of sex as either a pre- or extra-discursive "hard kernel of the Real" or (just like gender) another aspect of discourse. This is what leads to her very wrong-headed "critique" of the concept of "objet petit a" in the work of Slavoj Zizek and Jacques Lacan, very complex work which she oversimplifies and accuses of "reifying" or "essentializing" sex.Any serious student of Lacan knows that the a-object of fantasy is anything but "essential."It phantasmatically "dresses up" (to use Lacan's words in Seminar 14) a primordial psychic "hole," an *absence* or pure negativity where a "grounding" for discourse ought to be but is *lacking.* It's a shame that a book such as this which begins with a rigorous intellectual question degenerates into a sort of psychoanalytic dilettantism.

3-0 out of 5 stars Major work from a major thinker that doesn't quite convince
The best thing about Judith Butler is that she is always willing to think through the consequences of her earlier writings. This book was a response to the criticism that emerged out of the groundbreaking conclusion to GENDER TROUBLE that argued for an understanding of gender as performative. Critics took Butler to task for arguing that gender is something that is simply an act of performative volition - one can "be" whatever one wants to be - irrespective of the materiality of the body. Here, Butler turns the tables (in a neat deconstructive move) by showing how this criticism presupposes the a priori existence of "bodies" and "matter" separate from discourse. Yet, after a brilliant introduction, the book becomes weighted down by its own psychoanalytic presuppositions and its tediously dense prose style. There is often no reason for Butler's writing to be as incomprehensible as it is, especially given the giant claims she's making about the nature of gender (other than to "perform" her writing's own indebtedness to Lacanian psychoanalysis and Althusserian critique). 1-0 out of 5 stars colossal hybris
This book drove me almost entirely insane. The essay if you can call it that on the film Paris is Burning is simply incendiary to any person with a trace element of logic in their scalp. This essay argues that Venus Extravaganza was murdered for having been a transvestite. In the film itself it says she/he is killed -- but what the NYPD cannot solve Butler solves in the twinkling of a phrase -- she claims he/she is erased for playing with the sexual line. Not for burning a customer, or for simply being in a dangerous business.Whores are wiped out all day and night for being in the wrong place at the wrong time.Ever hear of the Green River Killer?Still Butler knows the motive. She just invents anything she wants, and calls it truth. She actually infers that anybody has the right to invent their own reality, and everybody else has to honor this reality.Only an extremely stupid person who has never had to work for a living could keep such a dumb idea down without puking.Do you mean if I think I'm a millionaire and walk into a bank, they will give me a million dollars?Do you mean if I have cellulite all over my legs and breasts that I can be a top model, I just have to really believe it?Do you mean that if I think I'm a genius, then others will agree?Feminist academics who've never worked, but who love to dramatize their own victimization, will love this book.Everybody else will simply puke from laughing so hard. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing resource for anyone involved in higher education.
I am lucky enough to go to a school which made the Top 100 and am quoted in the synopsis of my school. As co-president of our Undergraduate Gay-Straight Alliance, I plan to use this book to bring to the administration's attention areas in which the school is lacking and work to improve those areas. The book also has a lotof information for High School students selecting a college, administrators at colleges looking to better support LGBT students, and student leaders looking for help in planning events. If you are at all involved in higher education and want to make your school better for LGBT students, buy this book, read it, and loan it to everyone you know.

5-0 out of 5 stars The future is now!
This books time had come years ago, and I am SO glad to see that it is finally here. Alas, it's too late for me as a college graduate, but I like to know that future college students will know what to look for when picking a colle or university. This is a must for any HS guidance councelor or therapist or doctor or...well...anyone! It's a great tool and easyto use and understand!

5-0 out of 5 stars Important research tool for students and administration
This book is great for those looking at their university of choice and administraitions to see what they need to do for their LGBT students. As someone stated before, I wish this information was available years ago. However, it will help me as I research the university I plan to work in as an administrator or academic. ... Read more

So many good reviews fo this book already, I will only jump in to say that this book would be awesome for any collection, you can put it ddown for weeks, months, and read it whenever you like.

5-0 out of 5 stars Super book
A well rounded book that should be on your shelf. The author has done made a beautiful compilation of material related to the topic. This is a ground breaking work and strongly recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars A monumental achievement
This collection was the first of its kind when it came out in 1993. The three editors, all longtime advocates of queer scholarship, put together the Reader as an attempt to encourage new classes in queer studies. It was a resounding success, winning both a Lambda Literary award and notably being banned by Canadian customs.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A book for everyone
While at first glance this book may seem like it is only for the gay market, I have to tell you this is not so.As a hetro male who is into movies this book was everything I could hope for.Bravo to the author for the research done for this book, had to be a labor of love.Love old movies? Not me, until I read this book. Now I want to see Valentino's films. What sets this book apart from others is the authors's comments, always on target and usually funny. The author's own personal relanship with the actors and movies also makes this a great read - and every one will have someone they would rather have seen in this book - such is the joy of any list

4-0 out of 5 stars A Labor of Love
Michael Ferguson's "Matinee Idol," subtitled "A Shameless Celebration of Male Beauty in the Movies," makes a fitting companion to Daniel and Jackson's "Bent Lens," not becuase it's about gay film, or even gays in film--it is not--but because it rewrties Hollywood history from the point of view of a gay (male) voyeur. The journey is fascinating.Along the way, Ferguson offers tantalizing insights into the fantasy side of movies, as well as into the public and private lives of the actors who make them. His choices run the gamut of hunks from Valentino to Tyrone Power, and Jan-Michael Vincent to Gael Garcia Bernal, with occasional forays into such related subjects as musclemen and porn stars. There are extra-long articles on some of Ferguson's favorites, including Matt Dillon, Keanu Reeves, and Brad Pitt, but he also takes the time to pay homage to the occasional wannabe, such as Jack Beutel and Rodney Harvey. The text has a tendency to go on too long, and Ferguson may at times appear overly obsessed with the pubic trail that leads from an actor's belly button into his speedo, but that's a minor quibble, and the kind of thing that will inevitably appeal to some readers.Worse is the writer's frequent misplacement of his modifiers (as here on Bernie Schwarz's metamorphosis into Tony Curtis: "Like virtually every other Jew in town, a name change was mandated and he became Jimmy Curtis") and his problems with parallelism (as in this iconoclastic comment regarding "Some Like It Hot": "The film has been deified as one of the greatest screen comedies ever despite not being very funny and my opinion thankfully won't diminish the love audiences and critics have for it."In addition, as in "Bent Lens," there is no index; there is, however, an appendix of sorts, which offers a credit each for a near-exhaustive list of actors, including many not treated in the main text. One criminal, and puzzling, omission, is George Nader, who was doubly interesting in that he was actually gay, in addition to being a pal of Rock Hudson's and a '50s beefcake favorite. But everyone is bound to have his/her quibbles on the point of omissions, a fact that argues, in true Hollywood fashion, for a sequel to the text.I, for one, would buy it.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Classic of its Kind
Artistry in rope and the male figure.
5-0 out of 5 stars Bondage and Male Architecture
There will be those who purchase this fine book hoping for only the prurient. That's not only unfortunate but an insult to a brilliantly conceived and executed volume. Van Darkholme knows that a man is a systematic construction of parts. The use of rope serves to identify and isolate the body, rather as an architect plans floors for a structure. Each has a purpose, each has an access. In this process of isolation the photographer asks that we see what he sees and succeeds. From the exoskeleton of a building, we see the flesh and how it is supported by the rope/girders. It is as if man becomes the Pompidou center, all the disparate parts shown and their intimate connections revealed. Finally, the last few scenes are a mute testimony to tragedy. The collapse of the coherent to the cruelty of the people who would criticize that which they refuse to understand or accept. It is not only art observed, but art as applied.
4-0 out of 5 stars From a Master of Creative Arts
As any industry matures, we begin to see a certain craftsmanship that just didn't exist before. In the adult industry, such is true, and adult media is rarely considered "artful" or even "Avant-garde."

5-0 out of 5 stars More Than a Feeling
Many of us can remember our first kiss, our first day of school, even our first memories. But what about the instant you knew you were gay?In a sleek softbound coffee table book titled When I Knew, Robert Trachtenberg has assembled a brilliant collection of anecdotes and short tales surrounding this very topic.
5-0 out of 5 stars WHEN I KNEW
I purchased this book (because) whilst visiting some friends noticed it on their coffee table. Not wanting to be rude and sit and read the whole book whilst there.
4-0 out of 5 stars a bit old
maybe its because i am a early twentie something kind of guy, but i thought that most of the articles and quotes in here were a bit old a lot of the things were over my head, refering to childhood in the 60 and 70's or earlier i think that that is great and needs to be out there but there should be a sequal of more recent events if you are in the age group that grew up during that tiem you will love it. the images were great ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Rewarding
Yes, the text is dense, but it is no more so than the tradition the author is working within.Edelman's use of Zizek to critique the dominant ideology of futurity / the symbolic child expands and redirects queer theory. The book is written for specialists. If you're interested in the field but are struggling with the text, first read Zizek's "The Sublime Object of Ideology."
3-0 out of 5 stars Important, but...
Lee Edleman's book poses important questions for all of us about "queerness" and resistance to our presumedly "normal" cultural investments in a redemptive future figured most vividly in the notion of the "child."I admire the work being done here, and in particular the intellectual chutzpah it takes to dismantle this dominant ideological framework while taking on Baudrillard, Butler and other formidable thinkers. It is, however, unfortunate that Edelman seems to have become enchanted as much by his own linguistic cleverness as by the important ideas he sets out to explore.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great comfort to trans people and/or loved ones of people who are transgendered.
I believe being born transgendered is not a lifestyle choice, but probably coded in DNA somewhere. This book factually and carefully outlines the facts of life for transgendered people and their loved ones. These short stories will take the reader through a multitude of emotions, but end at one great and comforting thought...the issues can be dealt with and the transgendered themselves, as well as family and friends can come through this with grace.I ordered my copy through PFLAG T-Net and the author herself, sent me a personal note.I am a Christian, but a welcoming Christian who believes that all humans were made in His image. Because we are lucky enough to have come after Jesus Christ AND live at a time of modern medicine, the condition of being transgendered can be treated medically. While I am not transgendered myself, I have a loved one who I think is.I plan on keeping this book in my library and give it to that person when and if the time is right.A must have for anyone who is, cares about a trans person or who is curious about trangenderism.

3-0 out of 5 stars Too short to provide real insight
Although some of the real life stories contained in this book are interesting, there is not enough detail to really help families work through these issues. It more of a "there are others in the world going through this" type of book, rather than providing any special insights.

4-0 out of 5 stars The number one first book for families of transgendered
This compilation of40 accounts by the parents, spouses, children, and friends of transgendered individuals (and a few TG themselves) describes reactions from family members as they take the road less traveled toward acceptance of their gender variant relative or friend. Each story is brief - usually only a few pages - but expresses the thoughts and experiences of the individual author. The book is edited by the Chair of the PFLAG Transgender Network, Mary Boenke, MSSA, MA, and mother of an adult FTM transgendered son. ...
