3-0 out of 5 stars What motivates people to commit suicide?
Lauren Fairchild had lunch with her sister and her adored niece, picked up a picnic lunch of her favorite foods, drove three hours, hiked a mile up to a mountain lake, spread out her things and swallowed fifty pills.According to everyone who knew her, Lauren was happy with her life and was making plans for her future. So why did she do it?That's the mystery that part-time private investigator Kristin Ashe is hired to answer.Lauren's sister is convinced she is murdered and she wants Kristin to prove it.Kris has problems of her own.Her lover, lesbian activist Destiny Greaves, wants them to move in together and start a committed relationship, something Kris is not sure she's capable of doing.Kris comes from a severely dysfunctional family, at the center of which is her handicapped brother David. When David is found in a coma from multiple epileptic seizures, Kris is thrown into a family drama that she would just as soon avoid. It's no wonder that she is drawn deeper and deeper into the enigma that was Lauren Fairchild's life.Even after it becomes clear what actually happened, the looming question is why.As Kris and her hilarious friend Fran Green, an irrepressible lesbian ex-nun, uncover Lauren's motivation, Kris also begins to learn more about herself and how she interacts with her family and Destiny.
5-0 out of 5 stars A compelling and moving story

5-0 out of 5 stars Twice is nice!
Of all the accolades I could offer...all the complimentary adjectives I could bestow...and there are plenty...the highest compliment I can give for any book is this.I read it twice. Each and every page. I hadn't intended to.I wanted to do up a review as soon as I read it the first time, it was that compelling.Time passed and some months later I picked it up again, meaning to just leaf through it...re-acquaint myself with the characters, you know.Anyway...next thing, I'm right back into it.Nikki, Trang, Ginni, Magpie...each and every character, no matter how small their role, is captivating and entertaining. Ms. Albarella jam packs each page with riveting action, complex relationships and, yes, even the odd sexual romp! A wonderful book by a woman who obviously has great insight into the human condition and leaves the reader feeling satisfied and uplifted.

4-0 out of 5 stars Quirky Characters Make the Story
The story is an essential part of the human experience. The person whoheld the tribe spellbound by the fire knew that. The teacher who calms adisruptive class with the words, 'Once upon a time...' knows that. And sodoes Joan Albarella, in her second Nikki Barnes mystery Called to Kill. What makes a story, any story, engage or disengage its audience is itscharacters. In Called to Kill, Albarella gives the reader an assortment ofcharacters to care about. It's not just the central character who resonateswith the reader (Nikki Barnes is a unique detective -- lesbian Vietnam vet,Episcopal priest, and university professor), it's also the series'supporting characters (Max, Nikki's fellow vet turned detective, and Ginni, the doctor who is Nikki's partner) and a wonderfully quirky Falklands Warphotographer named Magpie York. Magpie, in fact, is one of the best quirkycharacters I've encountered since Buddy Bustamente, the dim-witted,outrageously dressed mobster in Les Roberts' Full Cleveland. A slightwoman, she has a personality that expands beyond her size to change thechemistry of any room she enters. Also impressive is Trang, the Vietnamesewoman Nikki saved, in a flashback, in the first book, Agenda for Murder. She has exactly the right combination of toughness and humanity one wouldexpect in a person who's endured a horrific war and made a grand new lifefor herself. The story begins with Trang's plea to Nikki for help and movesat a rapid clip through Western New York, the Buffalo area mob, and thetoples-bottomless dancing industry in Fort Erie, Canada. There's murder, betrayal, frank eroticism, and more murder in a fast-paced mystery thatskirts the line between a cosy (Agatha Christie, Murder She Wrote) andhard-boiled (Kinsey Milhone, Spenser, V.I. Warshawski). Called to Kill istime well spent.3-0 out of 5 stars Decent but not great.........

5-0 out of 5 stars What a fun book.
What a fun book. I could hardly put it down for wanting to know what pickle Jo was going to get herself into next. I can hardly wait for the next book to come out so I can see what Jo will do next. The only disappointment to this book is realizing you reached the end and then you want to read it again. It is well written and it takes you right into the character. What a talented writer with a gift for twists and humor. LOVE IT!!!

4-0 out of 5 stars Charming Dyke makes wonderful Reluctant Detective
This first novel from Anne Seale introduces readers to a new lesbian mystery series.Jo Jacuzzo, a 27-year-old, shy, intelligent (if not the most educated), softhearted butch finds herself thrown into a series of unexpected, complicated, and even life-threatening events.Jo's first person narrative is often amusing and her view of the world has a sweet, almost childlike innocence that is charming without being saccharine. While touchingly neurotic and somewhat naive, Jo is also loyal and a bit stubborn with a definite moral core. An intriguing follow-up to "Blue," this mystery focuses on a serial killer who seems to be targeting powerful women in the community who have risen "above their place". Clues draw Blue to a cosmetic surgeon and his staff, all of whom become suspects. The author juggles such disparate topics as child abuse, antique plates, social psychology, line dancing, and the Atkins diet to produce a fascinating read.4-0 out of 5 stars A Fresh Look at Love, Gender, and Responsibility

4-0 out of 5 stars Delightful Read!
When Sheila Shelbourne, a well known newscaster and womanizer is found murdered, the primary suspect isDiega (Dee) DelValle, a school teacher and recent fling. But as Dee and her three best friends (a great cast of characters) set out to clear Dee, they unwittingly cast the suspicion on another of their own and now have to find the murderer to clear two members of their group. They soon find out that finding a murderer in a haystack of jilted lovers, an ex-husband, abusive father and career competitors isn't going to be easy or safe, especially for Dee.

4-0 out of 5 stars A humorous mystery
How many times have you read a mystery only to figure out before you are half way through the book who did it?That will not be a problem with Relationships Can Be Murder.Jane DiLucchio keeps you completely in the dark until the last minute as to the identity of the murderer is and in the process tells a story that is often humorous. You have to like Dee DelVale. She really cannot help it that she has no idea what she is doing as she tries to be a detective.

4-0 out of 5 stars Can Love Overcome?
Dumped by her girlfriend and fired from her job, Andi Kane decides to take a time out from her regularly scheduled life to reevaluate her hopes and dreams. While at home, her grandmother asks her to solve a 65-year-old murder mystery.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great Read!
This is a really tight, interesting book. We get into the characters quickly, and the many interesting things that happen are believeable and fast-paced. I especially enjoyed the word-play between the two 'main women' (don't want to give anthing away here).
5-0 out of 5 stars What else could happen?
Andrea "Andi" Kane loses her job, her girlfriend and her grandmother asks her to solve a 65 year old murder all on the same day. What else could possibly have gone wrong?Well, she ends up walking barefoot on a cold street with nothing but the clothes on her back and no idea where to go when her girlfriend throws her out of the house.Don't think Andi is a loser or pathetic, she's just having some life problems. As she moves back in with her parents and searches for the answers to those problems, she is presented with a mystery by her grandmother concerning her great grandfather. He was convicted of a murder in 1939 and sent to prison, where he died.Andi's grandmother is convinced her father was innocent and, before she dies, she wants Andi to prove it.Andi finds herself in HiHo, Texas, with a fascinating cast of characters, not the least of whom is the district attorney, Janice Reed.As Andi tries to unravel the mystery, she unleashes old family pains, unsettles the realtionships in the small town and discovers information that could doom a budding relationship with Janice. Can life be more complicated?Well, yes, for Andi anyway.I have read all of Jones' books and this is her best by far.It shows a maturity of writing and story development that she hasn't exhibited until now.Whatever has changed, her ability to write has improved tremendously and makes this a very enjoyable book to read.Highly recommended. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Lacks eroticism...
I thought this was a very cute idea, writing a story about Nancy Drew... except that in this case Nancy is a lesbian!Sadly, it never really gets at all explicit.Mabel just doesn't know how to write fantasy erotica. There's one moment where the two women finally get together, but then it's the next morning and Nancy has left the building! No, I'm not asking for XXX porn, but maybe at least something R-rated?This is PG-13!

4-0 out of 5 stars Holiday reading
Light-weight, no-thought-required fun. A better read than the Case of the Good-for-Nothing Girlfriend.

3-0 out of 5 stars A Lite Read
If you're the type who typically knocks out a novel in a night or two then you'll probably enjoy this book. It's too silly to plod through if it generally takes you more time than that to get through a story though.Ipersonally felt that the book would have been a lot better if the authorhad only alluded to the characters' sexuality by using inuendo andsymbolism instead of coming right out and revealing almost all thecharacters to be queer.I think a tongue-in-cheek approach would have madefor a much funnier parody of the 50s kids sleuth genre.I guess that bymaking all the characters openly gay in a story that's set in the fiftiesor early sixties the author was trying to make some point but I just didn'treally get it I suppose.(Don't get me wrong.I'm all for being openlygay in real life but just not in this one particular story.)Another thingthat I found mildly irksome was that it's supposed to be a "Nancy ClueMystery".Yet the character of Nancy Clue doesn't come in until atleast halfway through the book and is really only a supporting character. Finally, I think the author could also have benefitted by keeping the bookabout the same length as a real Nancy Drew mystery. At over 200 pages withmoderately small print this book was just too long for its subject matter. However, I did find the book to be entertaining enough to possibly readfuture installments in the series. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Obscene tale of pinhead lesbians
A god-fearing Baptist friend of mine recommended this tome to me as one featuring strong and capable women, but it's nothing but a collection of warped lesbian scenarios wrapped around a flimsy plot about drugs and archaeology--nothing fit for the Christian soul in the least! The authoress ranks among the infamous Shirley Humpwater as a perpetrator of vile indeceny.

4-0 out of 5 stars Nice compact story
Like most Naiad books, this one isn't very long, but Harris does an excellent job of telling her story, packing it with tension and excitement, just enough spice, and not drowning her characters in useless words.Delia Ironfoot is a part Native American, former archeologist, with a troubled past that has caused her to retreat from most of the world.Enter Beth, a stock broker from Chicago, who insists she wants a guide to go backpacking, but can't hide the fact that she has another reason for this trip.As they get to know each other, their relationship develops only to be threatened by circumstances they had no idea existed. This is a nice, neat little book.Enjoyable reading for an evening.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Grand Sequel
Unlike the first review on this page I found Storm Rising to be a rollicking good adventure story which continued the plot lines from the previous 5 novels by this author.I read Tropical Storm first and enjoyed it so much(and desperately wanting to find out what happened to Delta) I bought this, the sequel. I thoroughly enjoyed them and so, bought the first 4 books. I found the characters to be believable and the plot chock full of action which is how all the books are written. In SR, all the favourites are there sharing the highs and lows in their quest to retrieve Delta from the jungles of Costa Rica.I found reading this book a delight and am eagerly awaiting the next book to find out what happens to the *gang* with the addition of the baby! Oh, and Megan's reaction to Rikki...My rating - Unputdownable!!!!

2-0 out of 5 stars Not my cup . . . of anything
Imagine if you will, a death defying situation, earthquakes, evil henchmen chasing you. What do you do?You stand around and tell each other how wonderful you are and how much everyone (the good guys, that is--the bad guys are all unremittingly evil) loves everyone else, especially the main character.I finally decided that I could only read this book as a camp fairy tale--that despite unbelievable odds nothing remotely bad happens to the good guys. Then I guess someone pointed this out to the author, so in a jarring change, the ending takes on a few tinges of reality. The editing allows things like characters supposedly a few hundred miles away popping up in a scene to make a comment.Typos abound. This book feels like a first draft with a cover slapped on it.Read it only if you want a (very) mindless lesbian adventure.

5-0 out of 5 stars Storm Rising-- "Best yet in Storm Series"

5-0 out of 5 stars A gripping tale from beginning to end
The latest Denise Cleever mystery by Claire McNab, Death By Death is a thrilling tale of deceit, suspense, and the physical and psychological ritual of destroying human minds and free will. Australian Security Intelligence Organization agent Denise Cleever must unravel the hidden dark purpose of an exclusive clinic whose charismatic psychiatrist appears to be turning its troubled patients into directed suicide assassins. A gripping tale from beginning to end, Death By Death will keep the reader riveted until the very end.

4-0 out of 5 stars Too short
This is another in the series of books about Denise Cleever, secret agent for the Australian government. It has the typical McNab development, there is a problem, Cleever goes undercover to solve it and meets a woman she shouldn't be attracted to, but can't help herself.Actually, the book is good SHORT reading and that's the point. The book is only 180+ pages long and there isn't a lot of character development. If you're looking for short escapism, McNab will never disappoint you, but her books are just too short and don't contain enough story in them. Now that the market in lesbian literature is expanding, she's dropping into the second tier of authors.Naiad was famous for publishing short novels like this, but those days are rapidly disappearing.McNab needs to catch up to the times. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars An Incredibly Enlightening Read
First, incredible because there was never a dull moment, depiction of the many, touching relationships was Ms. Miller's strongest talent. Usually, I find straight narration somewhat boring. However, as a reader of over 60 murder-mysteries, I was just as entertained with the narration as I was with the conversations. I really did find myself visualizing in my mind the majority of the scenes - my way of really connecting with the writer. And I never stopped for once and thought a scene to be unbelievable.4-0 out of 5 stars Nonstop roller-coaster ride
Bertha is a struggling black lawyer who finds herself dropped in the middle of a mystery when she's hired by a woman seeking legal counsel for a murder not yet committed. Later that evening, Bertha finds a man dead in her office. In her beloved grandmother's neighborhood, a building is burned, and arson is suspected. And then someone breaks into Bertha's apartment. As Bertha finds these events, and more, are linked, she finds her own life in danger, as well as her grandmother's. And somehow this is all tied in with Bertha's own family history to boot. Her life is further complicated (if you can still breathe) by a powerful attraction to one of the cops she encounters. It's a high speed ride that's full of danger and twists, which almost becomes suffocating for the reader as we follow Bertha on her adventure, but luckily, Miller's writing doesn't allow that to happen. I hope Miller continues this series, and gives the readers a break next time and let us catch our breath at some point. Her characterizations are superb and zesty, and the blossoming romance between Bertha and the police officer Toni is realistically rendered, and rather exciting.

5-0 out of 5 stars Imagery is Outstanding!
"After Bertha pinched together the last crumbs from the bag of chips and sucked the grease and salt from her fingers, she stared out Grandma's bedroom window, waiting. She watched the bushes in front of the Latch house ignite while the firemen supported a hose aimed at the roof. The view was unsettling.Grandma's dark bedroom grew very warm and the smell of smoke came and went with the wind change.Bertha fanned herself with a magazine and waited. She tried to remember where every piece of furniture was.Carrying the struggling old woman would be hard enough without tripping over a chair."Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Keeps the reader guessing until the very end of the story
A native Aussie, Claire McNab, now living in Los Angeles, is the author of thirteen Detective Inspector Carol Ashton mysteries and two Denise Cleever mysteries, Murder Undercover and Death Understood. Her next Denise Cleever mystery is due out in the fall of 2001 and is entitled Out Of Sight. Claire McNab presently teaches fiction writing in the UCLA Extension program in Writing.1-0 out of 5 stars Time to bury this body...
Detective Inspector Carol Ashton is a protaganist who has outlived her plot. This story's ending was so abrupt and illogical, it left this reader feeling disappointed and betrayed. 2-0 out of 5 stars Same Old Same Old
I gave this book two stars because it's Clair McNab whose prose is beautiful and dialog crisp and believable. Her books are easy to read.Yes, Clair McNab can write.I just wish she would.Solving the mystery relied on interviewing one lying suspect after another until Carol solves the murder through grinding police work.I will admit to being kept guessing until the end as to the identity of the murderer. And I was thankful that we were not subjected another scene of Carol blundering into the perpetrator and nearly being killed as she was in her previous two outings.Read more
