4-0 out of 5 stars Blood Guilt
Lindy Cameron's debut novel is wonderful.I enjoyed Kit O'Malley's character. She was down-to-earth with a sense of humor and integrity. This novel covered all the bases:romanace, mystery, intrigue.
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent writing, terrific story, great characters.
Lindy Cameron is a terrific writer, as smart and funny as the charming, goofy, danger-prone heroine of her book, Kit O'Malley.Blood Guilt is a great read; I finished it in a single sitting because I couldn't put it down.I am very much looking forward to the sequel, which is due to be published in August.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great weekend read.
The book was delightful. It had murder, mayhem, humor, and a very good romance thrown in.Plus, as another reviewer pointed out, it was not "dark".And you know the best part...it was not warrior princess and sidekick. I commend the publishers for putting out books with substance, both in story and length. It is refreshing to read a book with 300+ pages as opposed to the skimpy ones that B**** (rhymes with Ella) puts out. Thank you to the author for a great book.I look forward to your next. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars It's simply badly written
It's true there are interesting aspects to this book, but it's simply badly written. I'm not the only person of my acquaintance who's abandoned this book because of the substandard writing. (One friend actually took thebook back to the store in disgust.) Maybe mystery readers--andreviewers--generally have lower expectations for prose quality. Still, Ican think of several examples of mystery novels that sucessfully combinegood stories with good writing. This is not one of them. (I also found thestory overblown, its contrivances too obvious, its dialogue often clumsy. But what's most irritating is the writing.)

1-0 out of 5 stars Stick with Sue Grafton
My mother first stumbled across this book in the library. Her review? "She's no Sue Grafton, that's for sure." I picked it up when vacationing on the north shore of Lake Superior, which is where the novelis set. My own review? Writing that makes you wince isn't acceptable evenfor desultory "summer reading." Stick with Sue Grafton, EllenHart, and the like.

5-0 out of 5 stars Truth win out regardless of the fallout
The dying mother of San Francisco newspaper reporter and amateur detective Tyler Jones makes her daughter swear a death bed promise that she will return to their Minnesota roots to "shake the skeletons in the closet" and learn the truth. With the death of her mother, at 39 Tyler feels a bit alone. Her sister Magdalene will barely talk to her because she and her conservative spouse do not wish to expose their children to the family lesbian. The will is read and Tyler gets her mother's entire estate. Magdalene blames it all on her sibling's lesbianism, a sexual preference of their mother's attorney also. In truth, their mother's decision was only to counterbalance their father's decree to disown Tyler years ago due to her lesbian inclination. For Tyler, honoring her mother's last wish is important because her mother had accepted her as she is. Tyler, with her dog Aggie returns to her grandparents' hometown on the shore of Lake Superior with no real idea what her mother wanted her to learn. As she gets reacquainted with old friends, Tyler realizes that her family has passed down through the generations many lies and half-truths wrapped up in mystery and legend. The community, especially the males, remain silent and refuse to answer Tyler's inquiries. With the help of some strong women, Tyler begins to put together a history of misogyny and prejudice festering inside the hearts and minds of many of the local residents. SILENT WORDS is an interesting entry into the mystery genre. Joan M. Drury brilliantly and colorfully explores family relationships, interactions between neighbors, and sexual phobias (especially homophobia) that makes readers want to relook their own personal beliefs and relationships.Regardless of the audience's gender or sexual preference, Tyler Jones, in her second outing, is one of the better amateur female sleuths in nineties literature. Editorial Review

Devotees of the lesbian pulp romances of the '50s and '60s will want to sink into this smoky noir thriller set in Greenwich Village in the years just after World War II. Blackie Cole is a tuxedo-wearing butch whose soulful singing at the Candy Box, a Mafia-run nightclub, attracts a host of swooning regulars, as well as a lively mix of uptown types, from successful, secretly kiki actresses to rich gay men to straight couples out for a peep at the queers. None know that it's Blackie's bad luck in love that makes her songs so powerful. Her beautiful, hard-drinking lover, Renee, a stripper, has just moved out of Blackie's apartment and into an upscale brothel run by the nefarious Lucille. But between the mob on one side and the cops on the other, Blackie has more to worry about than her aching heart--especially when she stumbles on a corpse in the men's room of the Candy Box. The faults of this plucky first novel are simply the faults of the genre that it mimics: stock characters and overheated prose. But Blackie and her immediate circle are well drawn, and her dilemma issatisfyingly resolved.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars better than your average butch
What's a drag kig to do when she finds a dead body in the bathroom?Torn between the mob, the cops, and deliciously different women, Blackie has a lot on her hands in this novel. The settings are impressively depicted, but the characters a bit stock.Overall, this one was worth waiting for, and I'm ready for another offering from this writer.

5-0 out of 5 stars Thank you Lisa for your research!
So often, lesbian books are filled with adolescent cravings and sexual lust. This is a wonderful book that integrates lesbian sexuality with the reality of a specific time period. I loved the mystery and the history. I trusted the author in her research and I loved her ability to weave a tale. I think it has much to do with the author's research as well as her wonderful ability to write. We need more authors like this.Great talent is found here. Thank you for an interesting and informative read.

4-0 out of 5 stars Under the pink
This thriller set in 1949's New York City stars a wild assortment of characters (heroes and lowlifes), and is a real page-turner. It centers mostly on Blackie Cole, a butch nightclub singer employed by the mafia, who discovers a dead man in the club. When the dead man's sister shows up, Blackie is torn between her growing desire for the uptown woman and her duty to her mob boss. And Blackie's ex-girlfriend isn't quite through with Blackie either. Through a series of mishaps, Blackie's mob boss thinks she's ratted him out, and targets her for elimination. I thoroughly enjoyed the book, and found it rather intoxicating at times. I felt the story as a whole was diluted by the tidal wave of characters populating the novel, some of whom were throwaways lasting a page or so. Some of these details became distracting to me because they seemed unnecessary by the book's end. Nevertheless, I would highly recommend "Under the Mink" not only to lesbians in search of a new romantic thriller, but also to anyone searching for a well-written and involving historical novel. Lisa Davis is certainly a writer worth reading. ... Read more

Fans of the lesbian detective Lauren Laurano and her lover Kip will be thrilled to learn of the fifth book in Scoppettone's much-loved series. Here are the familiar wisecracks and the hard-edged New York humor, but in a new setting, a Long Island resort town where two of Lauren and Kip's close friends have just moved. Their trip to North Fork is supposed to be a healing, romantic vacation--Lauren has even forsworn e-mail and the Internet in an attempt to rekindle the fire with Kip--but they haven't even ordered their first breakfast at the local diner when a stranger bursts in, announcing that a body has been found hanged in the woods. The dead man's cousin insists it can't be suicide.Over Kip's objections, Lauren plunges into the case, making enemies of almost every town official. Or is almost every town official trying to cover something up?The investigation unfolds against the backdrop of Kip's disappointment in her lover and Lauren's fears that their relationship can never recover the trust and passion it once had. 4-0 out of 5 stars The Best Laurano Yet!
In this fourth outing, Lauren Laurano, NYC private investigation, agrees to spend some time with friends at their new Long Island home helping to fix it up.Not exactly her idea of good time, but she's trying to mend fences with her lover Kip.When the opportunity arises for to accept an investigation into a murder ruled a suicide, she doesn't hesitate.Perhaps she should have.As Laurano investigates and discovers each new layer, things get uglier and uglier and even include an attempt on her life. She calls on Cecchi, a former NYPD detective with whom she is going to go into partnership, to help solve the murder.Kip, in the meantime, is still punishing her for an affair she had in the previous book. This has it all - good writing, a multi-layered plot, and good characterizations.Scoppettone is back in form! She has, unfortunately, also said that this is the last Lauren Laurano book - "I've said all I can about Lauren, Kip, and especially New York City."That's too bad.I'll miss Lauren, Kip, Cecchi, their friends, and Scoppettone's take on the Village and the City.

2-0 out of 5 stars A real let down
I suspect Scoppotone wrote this just to resolve the Lauren/Kip/Alex triangle which came to ahead at the end of her last book.1-0 out of 5 stars Poor plotline with many holes in it.
This book was very disappointing. The plot was non-existent and the dialogue one-dimensional. I thought pages had fallen out of my book at the end because I couldn't believe the way the murderer was revealed, withabsolutely no analysis of or connection to the clues. It seemed that theauthor decided that she had written enough pages to satisfy her editor, soshe just said "It's obvious to everyone that the murderer is[X].", and then ended the book with another silly scene between Kipand Lauren.I usually look forward to the next book in a series, but I wasnot sorry to read that she has no plans to add to this series.Maybeshe'll spend her free time going to some writing classes. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars A good mystery
It's always a gamble to pick up a book by a new (to you) author. This is especially true with lesbian mysteries as I have found that there are alot of hits and misses in this genre. All in all I found this first installment of the Lauren Laurano mystery series to be enjoyable.4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent; highly recommended
I discovered this book when it was very favorably reviewed in the Sunday New York Times. The reviewer described it as the first mainstream mystery featuring a lesbian which would appeal to everyone (regardless of sexual preference).Since it took place in Greenwich Village (where my office was temporarily located at the time), and I guess I was a little curious about the lesbian lifestyle, I bought it.4-0 out of 5 stars wonderful book, bad translation!
When I read the first adventure of Lauren (in the french version, because I am french) I was very enthusiastic...I love books where you feel envolved, and when you cannot stop reading (sorry for my english!). So Idecide to buy the second one in Italy, where I leave. They sell me the 4thone telling me that it was the second (that what the review on the booksays!). This is the worst thing that they could do! I have to say that alsothe translation is AWFUL! No sense sentence, grammar errors.... So I boughtthe 2 intermediate books (can you imagine that?) in french. The translationis better than the italian one, but still have some errors. Isn't possibleto find a good translator, or a good spelling checker?I think I willbuy the fifth one in english, even if it is a harder job for me to read inenglish...At least I hope to read what Scoppettone writes! How can Iwrite an email to the writer? ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Unlikable characters
A friend lent me this book and I was encouraged to read it out of my desire for plausible storylines and relatable characters in this genre. I couldn't have been more disappointed. The conversation is predictable and ridiculous, and the qualities the characters display make you began to wonder why these people would have anything to do with each other.I really wanted to like the main character, Jane Lawless, but she is someone that cannot be related to and who too often has events conveniently fall in place for her.Her actions make you think she feels entitled to do what she wants by believing in her excuses for constantly putting aside basic principles and expects the other characters to believe her excuses too (they do). These are the kind of people you steer clear from in everyday life, in all situations possible, and in books.
1-0 out of 5 stars I'm sorry I wasted my money on this book
I rated this 1 star because there were no lesser options available.a minus 3 stars would be more appropriate.4-0 out of 5 stars A twisting and turning book that anyonewould enjoy
I really enjoyed reading Ellen Hart's book Wicked Games she has is an excellent mystery author. I read the book for a project in my school and actually I read the book and with my suprise I really liked it . I really like the chachter Jane Lawless she shows to me what a real women is she has power and courage to face anything head on.All the chachters really have Wicked Games up there sleeves and that make sher book such an excellent book to read.I suggest this book to anyone who enjoys reading a good mystey book. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Better-Than-Average Mystery
I generally love romances and merely tolerate mysteries, but I enjoyed reading Caught in the Net.Jessica Thomas does a good job keeping the reader's attention. She presents both obvious and hidden clues without revealing "who dunnit" too early. The only shortcoming of this book was in the relationship between Alex and Janet. The two women said "I love you" after only a few dates without any real build-up.

4-0 out of 5 stars Get Caught for an evening!
A new dyke detective for the armchair mystery fan has arrived!Caught in the Net is a first novel from Jessica Thomas and introduces Alex Peres.Alex is a thirty-something dyke who lives (and grew up) in Provincetown, Massachusetts.Arguably, one of the country's most famous resort towns for gays and lesbians, Provincetown is "that strange and beautiful place, where the men are pretty and the women are tough." (p1)With its seasonal population tide of tourists Provincetown plays as much of a role in Caught in the Net as many of the characters and Thomas brings the town's New England quirkiness and its queer color to life for her readers.
4-0 out of 5 stars Entertaining but predictable
Less than 1/4 of the way through the book, I knew exactly how the ending would go, but the story was so entertaining that I really didn't mind. Jessica Thomas does a great job with her characters! I can hardly wait to read her next one. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Miller Pleases--Again
Ms. Miller has pleased her mystery readers again in Mayhem At The Marina. Entertwining plot lines pick up from her first novel--The Killing At The Cat and send us off to a wonderfully full community of warm characters at a Florida marina.4-0 out of 5 stars Mayhem at the Marina
Carlene Miller integrated character development, intrigue, sex, and mayhem all into a tidy little ball. The author gives each character many roles.Damaris was an alluring yet spooky international icon...fighting againstthe evils of her country.Charlie was the tough kid, needing some place tocall home and some one to love her.And Lexy finds herself in many daringsituations from being killed to being committed to Wren.I enjoyed the waycommunity (straight & lesbian plus the spanning from the very young tothe elderly)was integrated even though there were a few snags. It take alot for people to step out and say they'll help when there are so manyunknowns, yetRobbie, Marilyn (the Admiral), Meg, Cap, and Lexy all took achance to make Charlie a new life.I found Lexy Hyatt's second book beforeher first and I can't wait to read it too.

4-0 out of 5 stars Interesting people -- arresting plot; even better than Cat.
In Mayhem at the Marina, Carlene Miller capitalizes on her ability to weave an intricate plot and to create believable characters. The plot is easier to follow than in Killing at the Cat, but is also more believablycomplex.Instead of setting up characters as suspects like tenpins andthen knocking them down, she has the several strands of the plot quitelogically produce people who have urgent motives for killing. The plotalso deals with contemporary issues that matter to the people of hersetting, a small marina in small-town Florida. As in Cat, Miller creates asizable group of disparate characters, all of whom connect to each other insome way. Most are vividly drawn and individual, especially the perverselycharming Charlie and the exotic Damaris. Some of the older women do notstand out as sharply -- Fran and Donna, for example -- but the "IronMaiden" from Cat reappears, strong and unique.Even the men in thisfemale genre are well-drawn, particularly Cap and the vile Steve. With thissecond book, Miller has honed her style, making it cleaner and sparer. Occasionally it becomes too spare, too many sentences beginning with thesubject-verb beginning, for example.Gone are many of the heavy referencesto Lexy's past as an English teacher with a penchant for correctinggrammar.Instead, that past is used to develop character, helping her tounderstand the teenage Charlie.Still somewhat annoying is the speechhabit of starting sentences with the verb (Looked out and saw...Wanted toknow...), a habit which could conceivably belong to one character but notto so many. One major drawback of the novel is the vagueness of Lexy'scharacter and/or personality. It is difficult to understand sometimes whatthe other characters see in her when so many of them are more interestingthan she is.Perhaps it is the choice of writing in the first person thatmakes Lexy not as fully limned.A future book written in third personmight showcase Miller's considerable talent for creating believablecharacters in arresting plots. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Another Jessica Thomas Hit
I thought that I liked Jessica's first book, Caught in the Net, but listen...this second one, Turning the Tables, is really fantastic.Of course having Alex, Fargo, Sonny and the others along again was great. But the easy readability and riveting thought keeps you in it page after page. And the details and nuances are great with Peter and the Wolf and the tacky little house boy, Lewis.Great reading and lots of fun. I recommend it without question.
5-0 out of 5 stars Hooray for Alex!
I really enjoyed Jessica Thomas's second offering, "Turning the Tables." Her characters are interesting and funny, and I can only hope to see them again in a third book! Her plot twists and situations are full of intrigue, yet believable and easy to relate to. I adore Fargo, Alex's dog, and returning characters including Sonny, Joe, Harmon and Aunt Mae. And hooray for some pulse-quickening passion coming Alex's way! I give "Turning the Tables" my whole-hearted recommendation, and I hope other readers enjoy it as much as I did! ... Read more

How honest should you be with your life? That is a question that every gay or lesbian eventually has to answer. The question lies at the heart of this book. How much should you risk to be comfortable with yourself? And don't let anyone tell you that being "out" is the answer for everybody. It was interesting to see that Karin Kallmaker wrote a review for this book.Kallmaker has to be THE premier writer of lesbian novels right now, but she doesn't mind giving praise to another writer's work.I agree with her about Under the Southern Cross. The Carol Ashton series by McNab is entertaining reading, but this book is much better developed. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Oh Captain, My Captain
This collection of short stories is a must read for one reason: the central novella, "Oh Captain My Captain." I liked the other stories, but this story is simply delicious. A young startrooper signs on for a deep space voyage with the mysterious Captain Drake, who has...needs. The needs are fulfilled in Zero G and just about every other place on the ship...except in the Captain's quarters where the secret to Drake's nature is hidden. I think this may be Katherine Forrest's most erotic writing. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Read!
Lauren Maddison has a great way of writing talking, like regular people would talk to each other.I like her writing style and this series of books featuring Connor Hawthorne is a great adventure.I hate to come to the end of the story and yet I can't put these books down.I recommend all three of these books, and I hope there's more to come very soon.Highly Recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars Lived up to my expectations
"Witchfire" is the second installment of the Connor Hawthorne mystery series. In this book Connor's beloved grandmother's grave is desecrated in Glastonbury, England in addition to other mysterious killings. Connor, along with Laura (lover), Malcolm (best friend), and Nathaniel (father), fly to England to investigate. All of them get swept up in a tangle of ancient mythology and spirituality that threatens all of their lives and the balance of humanity.5-0 out of 5 stars Lambda Literary Nominee! And I can see why!
This author reaches for more than just standard mystery themes. There are levels within levels, and a lot of food for thought. Plus it is written with an engaging, intelligent style--a big cut above your average so-called "lesbian" fiction, and I've read it all. This book isn't obsessing about the main character being a lesbian, it's focused on the joys and challenges of an admirable and very real human being who wishes life could just be simple even though it isn't. I like that.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Wonderful and Intricately Plotted Mystery
This is Minneapolis restaurateur Jane Lawless's tenth mystery outing, and the novels keep getting increasingly complex, not to mention more intricately plotted. Jane is still recovering from injuries suffered the previous fall when she was nearly killed, and in this book, she is more vulnerable than she has ever been in any of the previous books. She and her best buddy, Cordelia, travel to upstate Connecticut to an old mansion, Innishannon, to attend the wedding of Cordelia's estranged sister, Octavia, a stage actress who caught the attention of the living legend, Roland Lester. He's an 82-year-old movie director, a millionaire, and a man with multiple secrets including one that goes all the way back to 1957 when his best friend and purported lover, Lew Wallace, was shot in a murder that was never solved. Is this the kind of man Octavia should be marrying? Can Cordelia and Octavia put aside eight years worth of differences and reconcile? And what about the zany cast of characters rattling around at Innishannon?Roland's brother, a grand-niece, Lew Wallace's son, the housekeeper, and a documentary filmmaker on site all have their own secrets to hide, too. Soon enough, there are more killings, and it is unclear whether they are connected to the past murders or not. 3-0 out of 5 stars Not up to par

5-0 out of 5 stars A seriously fun lesbian novel
This is a wonderful romp through New York City via lesbian fiction. Funny, romantic, and at times very intellectual. She does a super job of capturing the female and the lesbian psyche. Any ney sayers are just closet bigots. I've read this book at least five times and I still love it. I just replaced my tattered copy. Highly recommeded!...

1-0 out of 5 stars i am floored by any praise for this book
when i was a teen, i read some of sandra scoppettone's adolescent fiction and enjoyed it.so when i found her books for an adult audience in the library, i was looking forward to reading them.i took this one out and found it to be such a puerile effort that i couldn't even finish it.the characters are shallow, badly drawn, and appear to be used by the author to service the particular plot twists with no adherence to what their underlying motivation would logically be.the story is confusing and not very interesting, with the result that the reader doesn't really care what happens.the main character possesses no particular charisma - her single defining trait appears to be a propensity to gauge waiting time in exaggerated terms (i.e., "after 100 hours the elevator finally arrived on the third floor") - a bit of attempted cuteness that wasn't particularly clever the first time, and was downright annoying the 30th.i don't care what anybody's sexual preference is, but this book, and the favorable reviews it has gotten, bother me because i feel that it has not been evaluated badly simply because the main character is gay - affirmative action, if you will.i have written material on a par or better than this that i rejected as being hopelessly sophomoric and certainly not worthy of publication.i think sandra scoppettone should be embarrassed.

1-0 out of 5 stars Much too graphic for me
Having greatly enjoyed the first Lauren Laurano mystery, I was horribly disappointed in this one.I don't know about you, but when I'm reading a MYSTERY, I don't expect to read about the color of the characters' hair in private anatomical parts, if you get my drift.(The author described it graphically, which I found very offensive.)Read more
