Editorial Review

Let me be the first to state plainly that Miss Mabel Maney is a pernicious influence on American boys and girls. Her dangerous spoofs of the 1950s surely threaten the morale of impressionable young people, who must learn to accept and appreciate their proper places in life. Nancy Clue, the famous girl detective, may be able to solve exciting mysteries without displacing her shiny Titian locks, but why does her friend Midge dress like a boy, use curse words, and smoke cigarettes? And why does Nancy's sweet new girlfriend, Cherry Aimless, tremble under her starched white nurse's cap as she admires the bulging biceps of police detective Jackie Jones? I suspect that in her private life, the author freely mixes plaids with stripes and wears white after Labor Day. As for her devilish success at demeaning the finest epoch in American manners, I can only say, "Darn and double darn." Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars I read it in one sitting!
This is the first book like this I've read. The first gay mystery, the first by Zubro. I read it the same day I got it and can't wait to read more.1-0 out of 5 stars Disappointment
I did not relish in Zubro's gay mystery, nor did I of any of his novels. I wanted to share this novel with my eldest son who is gay; I thought it would be helpful and comforting for him to see that gays or any groups in which society deems and stereotypes "different". He was quite upset with the entire book, claiming "Gays don't act like that!" I had no idea how affended he was until he burned the book in the fireplace. I, myself, felt that the book was quite choppy too often. I can comprehend the extra information was pertinent to the story at times, but he completely "over did it" with the whole "gay plot". I am also offended by the book and I'm not gay! I am sorry for wasting my money on buying that senseless book.

4-0 out of 5 stars I'm going to read all of Zubro's
This was the first "gay" mystery I've read, and I now want to eventually obtain and read all of Zubro's mysteries. The pace is fast and smooth for the most part in this book, but at times becomes choppy.Nonetheless, Zubro's intimate knowledge of police procedure and activity isplain, as well as his knowledge of the streets of Chicago. Zubro alsoweaves well into the story Paul Turner's (he's the protagonist) personallife in a meaningful way that in this book is actually part of the mainplot. The characters become three dimentional, taking on lives of theirown. The only criticism I have for Zubro is he spends too much time tellingthings to the reader, rather than letting the plot reveal what is going on.Such as little asides to explain why a character did something. Theseasides slow down the pace and can be condescending to readers alreadyfamiliar with how police work. The best aspect of this book is how Zubroportray's a gay character as a human being rather than an icon. It is myhope that Mr. Zubro will provide us with many such mysteries in the future, and I look forward to reading those he has already published. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars All of the Micky Knight books are fabulous
and it's a crying shame that they are not kept affordably in print--for one thing, it deprives Redmann of some very well earned revenue. In many ways, this 4th installment of Micky's adventures reads like the natural conclusion to the cycle of investigations opened by the first volume in the series, when we were introduced to a tough and beautiful lesbian babe-magnet with a smart mouth and endless compassion for those in trouble. She's physical (and even promiscuous--but the series is about how she gets tamed), she's achingly vulnerable, she's noble, she's got demons.Only in Lost Daughters do we meet her settled into a proper relationship, so the angst quotient is considerably lower than in the other books.Still, the conclusion to her search for her mother is unbelievably touching, and handled with just the right measure of reserve.Much as I'd love to see more of her, I wonder whether Redmann (whose website, ominously, appears to have vanished from cyberspace) is finished with her adventures. If she is, I just pray that she has another heroine in reserve for us to cheer on.Like the Meg Darcy books, with their lovingly depicted St. Louis locales, the Mickey Knight stories set us in abelievable New Orleans, with its social strata, its weather, its flavors and smells.

5-0 out of 5 stars Gorgeous Cajun woman
I have all of the Mickey Knight series and i am hungry for more. As an avid reader of true crime, authors like Ann Rule, Roy Hazelwood etc, i was surprised at how well written these books were. I couldnt put them down. Read more

Editorial Review

In the middle of one of Minnesota's worst rainstorms, TV newsman Todd Mills--"the most visible gay person in Minneapolis"--is standing on the Stone Arch Bridge, waiting to meet a supposed blackmail victim with a hot story. Instead, he finds an about-to-be-murdered young gay cop named Mark Forrest, lured there by the same tipster/killer. So begins the investigation in this fourth Mills book from Zimmerman, one of the best of the current crop of writers of gay-themed mysteries. As in his previous Mills outings (Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Fast paced and holds your interest
It isn't often an investigative reporter gets to witness a murder, but Todd Mills does in this page-turner. What I really enjoyed about this book was how Mills follows down this story, tracking the murderer, coming to very reasonable conclusions based on the information he has. Zimmerman also reveals the typical flaw of most police investigators, in that their primary goal is often making an arrest, not necessarily solving the crime.3-0 out of 5 stars plodding and political
I am gay.I accept the fact that most of the world is not.RD Zimmerman seems to be struggling with this fact and his blindspot keeps his Todd Mills books from moving out of the special niche category.Zimmerman, howabout a gay mystery where Todd and everybody else's sexuality is NOT thefocal point?Despite what you seem to think, it AIN'T all about sex.Tobe fair OUTBURST is a solidly plotted (plodded), well-written (ifpredictable) mystery, and a little more action packed than its predecesors(HOSTAGE remains my favorite). But Todd's main relationship seems to bewith lipstick lez Janice (kill her, PLEASE). The relationship between Toddand Steve is now all but nonexistent, and that's a drag (no pun intended). Is Zimmerman afraid a little emotion/tenderness/affection/SEX willemasculate his heros? You can't emasculate wood.Make these guys fleshand blood, please!Otherwise, don't bother.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Todd Mills Yet
R.D. Zimmerman's latest Todd Mills mystery is his best yet.The story's plot twists are extremely clever and surprisingly believable. It's obvious that Zimmerman spends a lot of time researching his novels..hisdescriptions of everything from catered food to forensci science areexcellent and, as far as I can tell, quite accurate. In some novels itshard to believe that a proatgonist who is not a cop can be involved in asmuch murder mystery fare as they are.But Zimmerman's Todd Mills managesto pull it off quite believably.I thought this one was a hoot! ... Zito's Damico leads a cast of characters that will delight all mystery fans and theater lovers.Light and very very fun, this is a greeat afternoon escape, perfect for a day at the beach or a long flight

4-0 out of 5 stars Promising debut novel from new gay mystery author
Nicky D'Amico is a twentysomething gay man from New York City, who decides to put some distance between him and a failed relationship by accepting a summer job as stage manager for a small theatre company at a Catholic college in a Pennsylvania small town. The play, "Convent of Fear", is about a week from opening, and everything seems to be coming along well.Personally, Nicky is enjoying the sabatical from the craziness of Manhattan, and sees some potential in a cute chorus member who seems to return his interest in him.
5-0 out of 5 stars Just what a mystery novel should be!
Nicky D'Amico is a dynamic witty character that you can't help but fall in love with as he struggles with his love life and the mysterious death of a nun.

4-0 out of 5 stars Worth reading
Unfamiliar with the author, I bought the book based on my reading of the dust jacket. What an interesting premise--two prominent gay men discover a murder at their wedding reception. The story went downhill from there, however, with so many red herrings flying around than I thought I was watching a rerun of the Muppet Show with the fish boomerang guy.Neither Tom nor Scott were well drawn characters, although I recognize that these are serial characters whose attributes are revealed throughout the series, and the killer's motivation, when revealed, made me simply set down the book and say, "Ewwwwww!"5-0 out of 5 stars Another Zubro success
I strongly recommend this book as well as any other Tom and Scott mystery.Mark Richard Zubro always weaves a web of mystery that will keep you guessing right up until the end.And you would be hard pressed to find a more perfect example of gay heros.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wedding Bell Blues For Tom And Scott
Well, you always knew that when high school teacher, Tom Mason and baseball ace pitcher, Scott Carpenter ever decided to officially tie the knot, you should get ready for the media event of the century. 5-0 out of 5 stars Best Mystery Series Out There
This is without a doubt my favorite series of books out there. They are from top to bottom the most thought out and intriguing series I have ever read and I am SO glad that they have reprinted them so others can see what I have seen for years...JM is a great artist. I am reviewing this one in the series because it is my favorite. When this book picks up we know that Micky and Cordelia have spent a night of passion together but nothing much has come of it because they live in different worlds Cordelia is a sucessful Dr and heir to mucho money who is not very out to those around her while Micky is a semi-successful, slutty, and out private eye who struggles with the nightly question of whether to pay rent...feed the cat...or drink herself into a stupor. They have to come together to try and solve a series of murders that have Cordelia looking like the prime suspect. Along with their friends (the lawyer..the detective..the political "flunkie") they seek to answer the questions of who did it and why before time runs out. This book is filled with well written and funny dialog (and in a rare turn of events with lesbian fiction GOOD SEX scenes that don't bog down the story). I suggest that you read the Death by the Riverside book first since it is the 1st in this series but make sure once you read it to not forget to pick up this one and enjoy a really spectatular ride!

5-0 out of 5 stars READ IT FOR YOURSELF!
A previous reviewer must have forgotten that some people want to read fiction to be drawn away from the world of reality. Not everyone wants to be entertained by reality and solve world problems.Mickey Knight is exciting, moody, funny, sexy, strong, vulnerable, and TUFF, and the author develops the characters throughout the series. You will care about her and the other characters too. The story is full of action, mystery, romance with steamy romantic sex and just plain sex.Remember, this is the story of a street smart PI, so don't let an occasional bit of not so sexy talk from a sex scene make you miss this great series. It is one of 'THE BEST' written detective series featuring a lesbian. If you only read stories about perfect characters, with "NORMAL" everyday problems, who have perfect sex and during sex never talk the least bit dirty, then maybe you need to SpIcE up your reading with a little Mickey Knight!I say try the book for yourself and walk thru the streets of NEW ORLEANS with Mickey.

5-0 out of 5 stars Hooked on Mickey Knight
I ordered the book "Death by the Riverside" on a whim. After reading it, I knew I was hooked on Mickey Knight."Deaths of Jocasta" was simply a fabulous story. The author displays an incredible sense of humor, but yet, there were times when I could have cried for Mickey as she struggled through issues and addictions. The mystery held my attention, but the parts that I really enjoyed were the explorations of relationships and friendships within this novel. I would have to say that this book is one of the best I've ever read, and look forward to reading the next two books by this author. I am keeping my fingers crossed that there is a fifth book in progress. ... Read more

The book was a compelling read for chapter to chapter, but at the end you feel cheated. While it makes an interesting Fiction, it did not have the makings of a good Mystery. The solution was rushed in the last two chapters of the book.5-0 out of 5 stars Another great Zubro Mystery
Great Mystery....Mark Zubro has done it again! Paul Ben his 2 children Mrs. Talucci even his partner all came to life again in another ongoing Turner mystery...thank-you Mr. Zubro for continuing this series

For those of you who have read the other mysteries by Mark Richard Zubro, this mystery should be no different. Detective Turner is back and they are searching for the murderer of a federal judge. This New Years Eve murderkeeps Turner and his partner busy as they travel through the gay area ofChicago looking for the killer. It is well paced, well developed charactersand an intresting plot. If you have read Zubro before you will enjoy thisone as much as the others.

5-0 out of 5 stars Horrifying and Wonderful At the Same Time
This book made the hair on my neck stand straight up!But I couldn't stop reading. The fact that it is fiction centered around real events made it even more horrifying and compelling. But even if the Juarez murders had not and were not taking place, this is still an incredible book. It's well written, the story riveting, and the characters (very important to me) are drawn with great reality. The protagonist, Ivon Villa, is a strong but flawed gay woman, fiercely loyal to her family in spite of her mother's hatefulness, and her iron will and determination make her a perfect vehicle for the non-fictional message of this book. BRAVO ALICIA!

4-0 out of 5 stars A Simple Yet Facinating Read
I initially was going to give this book three stars, but in all fairness, I was hooked and couldn't put it down.
2-0 out of 5 stars A farce?
This book read like a cheezy, mystery version of Rubyfruit Jungle--set on the border, Chicana style. It is overflowing with stereotype and is in need of serious editing. Despite its length, I read it in 2 days (for me not always a good sign) and was slightly shocked at how disappointed I felt because I have been a fan of Gaspar de Alba's thoughtful, theoretical work. I wonder what, if anything, this perfectly-resolved tale will do to shed light on the murdered women of Juarez, other than to detail the horror of the killings, which her readers are likely to already know. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Witty and Fun Comic Thriller!
Rick Copp surprised me.
3-0 out of 5 stars A sitcom mystery
That's it! As I read through this in an afternoon, that's what I was thinking: this mystery reminds me of every sitcom I knew and loved, and some I didn't.It's funny, but it plays for the quick guffaw, not the introspective chuckle. And sometimes it plays for the slip-on-banana-peel howl. It's an amusement of the shallow variety--good entertainment without much involvement. And if that's your mood--it's good at what it does. And there are no commercials.

1-0 out of 5 stars Fun but bland:A prime time TV murder mystery
When a former child star actor is found dead in his own pool just after landing a juicy new role, the door of opportunity is wide open:campy fun?noir crime novel?wide-ranging Hollywood satire?Yet Actor's Guide, written by TV script author Copp, remains bland and distant. This type of thing is done much better in other books, and why not read those instead?
