5-0 out of 5 stars Idaho Code - where family therapy comes with a shovel and an alibi.
"Everyone knows that Idaho is full of crackpots. The big secret is that not all of them belong to right-wing militias. Some are lesbian separatists, some are ex-hippies, and some are members of Wilhelmina "Bil" Hardy's immediate family."
5-0 out of 5 stars Carl Hiaasen Meets Ellen DeGeneres and David Sedaris
This book is hilarious. From the opening scene where the heroine attempts to renew acquaintaince at a funeral with the daughter of the deceased while her mother is engaged in a loud cell phone conversation to the surprising denouement of the murder, you will be caught up in the antics of Bil's family and the town of Cowslip, populated by the Radical Faeries, the Lesbian Avengers, and Captain Schwartz's lesbian commune, gun club and baseball field. If this list seems too strange to be true, I dare you to read Idaho Code and marvel at the wealth of characters contained within its covers.I am a sucker for character-driven stories, especially when the characters are so rich they leap off the page and pummel you in the face.
5-0 out of 5 stars Hilarious!
Idaho Code is quite different among other lesbian fictions. It's full of mystery and humor (oh, I can't count how many times I laughed out loud) and has more characters than many lesbian fictions have. The latter don't lead you away the main theme but rather enrich the story and give more depth in it.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great series
I love Zubro's writing style: fierce, real, absorbing. His books are refreshing and full of life. Does anyone know how to get in conact with him?

5-0 out of 5 stars Does a severed head get filed under S or H?
In this landmark 10TH mystery in the "Tom & Scott Mystery" series, we join high school teacher Tom Mason, as he arrives early one Saturday morning to do some volunteer work at the local gay/lesbian teen counseling center. He decides to catch up on some filing in the office he shares, and opens a file cabinet drawer, finding a severed head.Being no stranger to having the misfortune to stumble upon a murder, Tom tries to work with the police to find the killer. The problem is that the victim was the unusually unpleasant and nasty manager of the center, and there is no shortage of people who were glad to see the end of the man referred to - by employees and volunteers alike - as "Snarly Bitch".Various pieces of circumstantial evidence seem to point to just about everyone, including Tom himself.
4-0 out of 5 stars File Under---Disappointed
One of the best things about summer is the anticipation of another of Mark Richard Zubro's fine novels of realistic gay living in Chicago, my favorite city on the planet---for bunches of reasons. In fact, I'm proud to have collected first editions of all of his works.

5-0 out of 5 stars Unparallelled subtlety of observation
Hollinghurst's unparallelled subtlety of observation was almost physically hurting me as I was reading this great novel and that is something I have never experienced before. Apparently, this is literature that reaches places other literature does not reach. I am very much in awe of Mr Hollinghurst's uncanny art and the negative reviews I found here on Amazon prompted me to write this review. Highly recommended for the maybe more experienced reader.

2-0 out of 5 stars Well....
The writing is very good, but the true and simple test of a novel is to ask oneself these questions:Do I care about the characters? Can I stop reading this book right now and never wonder about how it ends?If you answer no to the first question and yes to the second, it is not a good work of literature. The Line of Beauty is, unfortunately, one of these novels.Tedious, overly mannered and stifling.

1-0 out of 5 stars ????????
i liken this book to fitzgerald's "tender is the night." and that is not a good thing. people of no substance plod through hundreds of dull dull pages. are people really this shallow? this empty? probably. but, my god, do i have to read about them? no. i do not. i simply could not finish this book (and that is rare). i wasted valuble reading time for about 300 pages, then had to admit it just wasn't working. because of all the critical acclaim this book recieved, i was very much looking forward to reading it. what a major disappointment! i am truly puzzled by the positive response this thing gets from so many people. great writing? really? i just did not see much of that here. shouldn't a book have at least one interesting character in it? it seems that dullness is making a comback in critical circles these days. too bad. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars All American Boy, an all-American family
Wally Day was the All American Boy in Brown's Mill.
4-0 out of 5 stars A dark and tragic departure for Mann
What a change of pace this novel is from his circuit part boys shennanigans. This is a much more complex, dark and heartbreaking tale of a family - mostly mother and son - coming to terms with their demons and their mistakes in life. The mother's story and background unfolds as the main character moves the the present trying to figure out what he wants and why he's returned home after a call from his mother.Mom's background unfolds as an aching and epically tragic life. The son - really, has not fallen far from that tree. Not a happy, carefree story, but a haunting and moving one.Actually, a welcome change from his last novel.

3-0 out of 5 stars Depressing Yet Insightful
Mr. Mann has written a novel that speaks of some of the very sad aspects of many gay lives. The main character, Wally, endures some dreadful encounters with his homophobic father, while his mother who is sickly has probably murdered his cousin. In addition, Wally returns home to visit the man who molested him when he was a child (with Wallys consent). Wally's dad has the guy locked-up. Turns out Wally loves the guy. While home he meets Dee, a younger guy with whom Wally becomes involved. Dee was a well-developed and interesting character and I would love to see him return in a future Mann novel. The book was an OK read, but a far cry from the author's previous works, "Men From the Boys" and "Where the Boys Are." These were outstanding in comparison to this new piece. This book was somewhat disappointing to me as Mr. Mann's earlier work was so, so good. Hence my rating of three stars. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars A Horrid Example
This book is a "horrid example".
1-0 out of 5 stars A double fault
You really have to love tennis or Rita Mae (or both) to stick with this one to the end. I am not a tennis fan so I skipped a lot of the play by play action. The story line was interesting though and if there had been less sports commentary and more interaction between the characters it would have been really great. Carmen is a spoiled brat and does not deserve the long suffering Harriett.

2-0 out of 5 stars disappointing, after all the hype
All in all, this book was dull and devoid of energy. The plot was convoluted, unnecessarily so in my opinion, and by the end felt like it was made so complex to cover up the lack of character development and growth. I felt no compulsion to keep reading because I pretty much knew how it would end. The characters felt like puppets being frogmarched through the plot-- there was no symbiosis between plot and character, no connection.
4-0 out of 5 stars A bit of a slow starter - really three and a half stars.
Marcoux is an excellent writer, but the setup on this one was a bit slow.It did keep me reading, although I didn't find it a page-turner.About one third of the way in, the pace picked up and I found it harder to put down.Jessie Mercer is a complex and interesting writer/woman with some paranormal talents and the ability to tap into other levels of being; this makes her life complicated when her novels and research foreshadow events in her life.In this book she meeets many beings from her past lives and becomes entangled in their machinations.Hard to believe?Yes, but fascinating reading. One more look at the Merovingian 'heresy', but it isn't the focus of the book.It will be interesting to see where Marcoux takes Mercer from here.

5-0 out of 5 stars Move over Dan Brown
This is so much better than the "DaVinci Code".

5-0 out of 5 stars great characters
This is a new and exciting book with colorful characters!I hope this is the beginning of an adventure with Adam.Randy Haynes has the ability to bring the characters to life. This reader wants to have more!

5-0 out of 5 stars Intriguing, Involved Fast Paced Murder Mystery
Having been raised on a bayou in Louisiana, gone to school in Lafayette and lived in New Orleans for 22 years I found Mr. Haynes book fascinating, imaginative and insightful of the darker side of Louisiana Politics, criminal aspects plus the goodness of Southern hospitality. The characters are from every aspect of life in Louisiana, from down home country people through the flamboyant Gallery owner to the bigots, criminals and every other group that populates the landscape.
5-0 out of 5 stars Good Murder Mystery
I can only hope that this is the first of many mysteries to be produced by Mr. Haynes. The lead character Adam Tyler Stephen is a fascinating blend of sleuth, hard-nose FBI agent, and a sexy single gay guy.He solves the mystery of the murder of a Congressman, and in the process upsets most of officialdom in Washington, at FBI headquarters, New Orleans, and the Louisana bayous. In the process, he befriends the doyen of New Orlean's Garden District, a sassy FBI secretary, an aged butler, and a college age gay kid who is allegedly a Neo-Nazi.Needless to say, the convoluted plot keeps the reader guessing until the very last few pages.

4-0 out of 5 stars Miller takes center stage.
In Death Off Stage, Carlene Miller has done superbly what she does best: create believable characters involved in an intricate plot in a realistic setting. With Tory Gordon and Tandy Byers she has introduced two strong females equally but disparately likable so that the reader cares what happens to them. Even more beautifully limned than the leads in this drama are the supporting characters, especially the women -- indomitable Miss Verda, sailor-mouthed Maxine, talented and lovely Selinda -- and many more. Every character in the book supports the theater adage that there are no small parts, only small actors; but Miller allows no small actors. This large cast becomes involved in a murder mystery so carefully plotted that it ravels and unravels like fishline or like a drama unfolding on stage. The intertwined lives of the characters produce many motives, means, and opportunities making a Gordian knot for Captain Gordon and the reader to slash through. Finally, Miller's homey small town setting sets the stage with realistic local color -- the community theater undergoing remodeling, the Shack with its inimitable chowder, the annual River Festival complete with raft race, and the Coffeepot where everyone exchanges the latest gossip. Lending depth to the story is the realistic feel for the challenge of lesbian life in Small Town, South. All together, the characters, plot, and setting make Death Off Stage Carlene Miller's best book to date. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Brilliantly crafted mystery
Again Dreher brings us to a place where we discover new worlds and a deep respect and love for our own creative powers and those of the larger realm. Shaman's Moon won the LAMBDA literary award this year for best lesbianmystery and it is a richly deserved honor. Finally, a book is honored thatexplores more than our sexual side. It must be her work as a clinicalpsychologist that enhances her compassion and empathy for her characters. This book is several cuts above the rest.

5-0 out of 5 stars Alternative Empowerment
Sarah Dreher is one of the most well-intended authors I have read. Every novel presents us with endearing lesbian role models and situations that promote the healing and empowering of the lesbian psyche. For some, thisnovel could offend because that very empowerment comes at the expense ofJesus Christ and born-again Christians, but this is intentional and perhapsnecessary. The novel's power comes from the splicing of female-friendlypsychology and religion onto the campfire ghost story. Maybe Dreher fallsshort by replacing religious scepticism with shamanistic belief, but thereis no godless alternative that's any less a matter of belief as she so welldemonstrates in Stoner's inner struggles. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Great mystery and a reminder of past injustices
Owen Sinclair, a B-movie director is murdered in a hideous manner. This makes Kate Delafield think the murder was one of revenge. Through sleuthing, she finds that Sinclair was a "friendly witness" during the McCarthy witchhunt era. He spoke to HUAC (House un-American Activities Committee), which was the House arm of McCarthy's own Senate hearings. Hollywood was especially vulnerable at this time. Forrest skillfully weaves in information about that period through her characters but never allows it to overshadow the mystery. There are red herrings galore and Kate lets herself get emotionally involved with several of the people and there's even a romance in it for the lonely Kate who feels that she must protect the people she loves from the horrors of her job. She is also isolated because she is gay and must remain closeted to be able to do her job. The LAPD has a policy not unlike the military: Don't ask, don't tell. Every Delafield book reveals a new facet of Kate and this is no exception. If Forrest wrote mainstream detective mysteries rather than mysteries with a lesbian heroine, she would probably be as popular as P.D. James or Ellis Peters or Elizabeth Peters. It's unfortunate because all her mysteries are first-rate. As I said, the politics never get in the way of the story, although this book did introduce me to Scoundrel Time by Lillian Hellman, which I later bought.

4-0 out of 5 stars Mystery and history
Forrest combines history with suspense and comes up with an interesting and very readable instalment in the Kate Delafield Mystery series. An unpopular tenant is poisoned in a slightly seedy apartment block peopled by Hollywood employees of the forties and fifties. These eccentric and enchanting characters bring to life the era of McCarthyism and the House Un-American Committee, as well as nostalgia for the glamorous Hollywood of that time. Of course, lesbian detective fiction wouldn't be complete without romance, and Kate Delafield finds that in the Beverly Malibu. This novel has a strong story line and keeps you guessing until the last moment - I recommend it.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best...

A killing outside a West Hollywood gay bar called The Out Crowd is what brings reporter Benjamin Justice out of a long, boozy funk in what looks to be the start of a lively, literate new series. 4-0 out of 5 stars great protagonist, enlightening plot
I bought this book at a used book store, so I guess I didn't put any money in Mr. Wilson's coffers at that point, but now he's got me hooked and buying the rest of the series at regular prices, so I don't think he's going to be too miffed about the used bookstore thingie.
4-0 out of 5 stars What a start for a series, and what a novel ending
I first read JM Wilson's fourth novel and found it well worth going back to the start and getting this first novel.I was very, very impressed with the writing.Read a chapter of "Simple Justice" and then one of Grafton's "S is for Silence" and you'll get a clear picture of good fiction and interesting sentence structure versus the mundane, dumbed down language increasingly common in American mystery novels. Wilson's writing and characters are just far, far more complicated and interesting than Grafton's.
4-0 out of 5 stars Troubled sleuth
Mr.Wilson's debut novel is set in a very specific environment. Gay and lesbian world of LA. Benjamin Justice, his sleuth, is a man on a brink of destruction. Overwhelmed with grief and regrets he spends his days drinking cheap wine. The writer is blunt and to the point, and he doesn't care(and he shouldn't)who gets offended. There is no law that forces anybody to read or finish the book they started.Everybody is intitled to his own opinion or bigotry butwhat always amazes me is the inability to understand those different that we are. That simple thing is the key of coexistence in this world. This is a good book and I am happy I found it. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Solution Obvious to All But the Dumb Detective
Having thoroughly enjoyed Greg Herren's BOURBON STREET BLUES and JACKSON SQUARE JAZZ I was really looking forward to this one. It was a colossal disappointment to say the least. Whereas the other two were light and witty and the hero was charming, this book was dark and depressing and the hero was an egoistic, jealous, and above all--STUPID bore. It was obvious from the word go who had abducted his boyfriend. So for nine tenths of the book, in spite of the school of red herrings that were constantly thrown at us, we were left to agonize at his ineptitude. And then there's the ending! Believe me it was all for nothing. Stick with the two books I've mentioned. Forget this irritating trip to nowhere.

3-0 out of 5 stars Detective Chase
I didn't like it very much because the book makes seem New Orleans as a place only with Gay Bars (I don't mean this disrespectfully). Anyway, the plot is actually good, suspense and everything that you expect to find in this kind of detective-mistery novels. One thing I can say is that I anjoyed very much the descriptions of the city and the ending is interesting. I on't regret buying the book but I have better books that take place in New Orleans and-or deal with the novel's topic.

5-0 out of 5 stars WHERE DO WE GO FROM HERE?
MURDER IN THE RUE ST. ANN is a truly fascinating book.Chanse MacLeod is once again confronted with a totally baffling series of situations that spell intrigue, jealousy, obsession, duplicity, and duality. As the story develops, Chanse is asked to solve, what initially appears to be a simple case of economic harassment. This however, soon morphs into a domestic confrontation for him and his lover Paul.Untold personal histories add to the drama and tension, and once murder becomes part of the picture, all bets are off.Self-doubt, recriminations, harsh words and judgments, combine to keep the reader trying to piece together the clues to a dual mystery.Suffice it to say, the reader will more than shocked by the resolution of both mysteries in the novel.I'm not sure where Chanse MacLeod will go from here, but I genuinely like the character, and I sincerely hope we will be treated to more of his adventures. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Fascinating!
The other reviews have done justice to this wonderful book. However the overwhelmed feelings prompt me share my two cents about this book.
5-0 out of 5 stars Speculative Fiction at its best! Review by Cheri Rosenberg
"Rangers at Roadsend," a murder mystery reminiscent of Agatha Christie, has crossed many genres including speculative fiction, fantasy, romance, and adventure. The story is an incredible whodunit that has something for everyone. Jane Fletcher, winner of the Golden Crown Literary Award 2005 for "Walls at Westernfort," has created an intelligent and compelling story where the reader easily gets drawn into the fascinating world of Celaeno, becomes totally absorbed in the well-designed plot, and finds herself completely enamored with the multi-faceted characters.
4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book! However, WARNING!! Previously released under different title.
I highly recommend this book and this series, especially for any lesbian sci-fi/fantasy fans. However, what the book won't tell you (but the publisher's website does) is that this book is "The Wrong Trail Knife".It's been re-published and re-released under a different name. So, if you've already read that one, I recommend moving onto "The Walls at Westernfort".That one is new.

5-0 out of 5 stars Couldn't Put It Down!
What a fun read. The protagonist, Lillian Byrd, is clever and daring. Elizabeth Sims writes strong characters and interesting plots. I hope she will continue to write Lillian Byrd mysteries!

5-0 out of 5 stars A Rollicking Good Mystery
Lillian Byrd's life is in flux. She's worked for four years at Detroit's "Eagle Eye" newspaper covering various subjects including the crime scene, but after the owner's son manhandles her one too many times and she retaliates, she gets fired. Bad timing. She'd been working on a story about the murder of a woman who had worked as a DJ at the local lesbian bar Lillian sometimes frequented. Now Lillian won't get a chance to write the story. Still, she can't let the murder rest; she has to know why the woman was killed.
5-0 out of 5 stars This book is incredible!
Elizabeth Sims is an amazing author. This was one of, if not the best book, I have read in a long time. I could not put it down until I finished reading it. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Okay But . . .
In this 16th outing for Inspector Carol Ashton, she is called into the desert to determine whether a millionaire's death is accidental or murder. She has no shortage of suspects because the dead man was universally hated. Many of her suspects had both motive and opportunity to have cut the cords to his parachute causing him to plummet to his death.
2-0 out of 5 stars Sad demise of a once interesting character
I can't actually say I "read" this book as I skipped several sections and got to the end as quickly as possibly. What I did read confirmed my initial fear: Carol Ashton has become a walk-on in her own life and, without an interesting, full life for the main character, the thin mystery has little to recommend it.
