Beautifully written, wildly imaginative
Beautifully written, wildly imaginative fables, which puncture a great many sacred balloons, gay and straight.AIDS activists, government "scientists", doctors, suburban Parents of Gays, "QueerTheorists" -- all get their comeuppance.I could only read this booka few paragraphs at a time -- gasping, laughing, and then thinking.Andafter reflection, some of Ortleb's most shocking and outrageous statementsemerged as expressions of common sense and decency in a world goingviciously mad.The first story, "The Retraction", has the mostbrilliantly hilarious satirization of *Schadenfreude* since Mark Train's"Emmeline Grangerford" episode in *Huckleberry Finn*.Two of thestories, "Bruschetta on the Beach" and "Daddy's LittleClown", are masterpieces on a par with the best of Somerset Maugham orKatherine Mansfield.

More Fun Than A Movie
In the haze of a Michigan Women's Festival delerium, standing next to Sharon Bridgforth in a bookstall, I bought her book, along with any other lesbian book of poetry I thought I might like. I've since reread this book repeatedly, recommended it repeatedly, and offer this opinion: If you like women, if you like to laugh, if you like a heart-breaking, soul-warming story, buy this book. Buy 12 of them.

The Blues like they were meant to be sung!

A book that both partners can really get into. It promotes thinking and gives plenty of thought for action. The stories are well written, never boring or dull; fast paced and very soft and sexy. It would truly be atragedy if they were not true, but rather just the ramblings of a goodimagineation. The authors are sharp, quick thinking, intelligent and giveyou an up-close view via your mind what female-to-female sex is reallylike. Buy it for Greg Wharton's story, "First Cut"
This is an interesting collection, similar to the Queer Fear series. As with any collection of stories there are highlights. I particularly liked the marvellously neurotic lesbian mindspace of Carol Rosenfeld's rabbit tale. Greg Wharton's gruesome "First Cut" is enough to make any reader wince, focussing as it does on bloody details. Wow! Queer horror at its best!
I can't even begin to say how much I enjoyed this book. Some of my favorite writers contributed to this book, and I discovered some new writers I'd never heard of before--and will be watching out for their other work!Read more

A new book by Ruthann Robson is always a cause for celebration. This latest offering is a collection of eight thoughtful, loosely linked stories, many drawing on Robson's experiences as a law professor and theorist. In "Black Squirrels," for instance, a disabled and displaced college professor plots ways to undermine the development of a shopping mall down the street from her rural home. The two best stories here are the deceptively simple "Review," in which an overly zealous young writer submits her first book review--a savage critique of a new novel by an established writer--and learns with horror that the novelist has killed herself soon after reading it, and "Death of the Subject," in which a psychic tries to help her cop girlfriend unravel a local crime (the title is a nod to postmodern theory that only makes sense in the last line of the story, like the kick in a Bloody Mary). Rooney's done it again!
This is one of the most interesting collections of stories I have read about gay male life in a long time.Most of these stories take place by the ocean in Provincetown and South Florida.While the ending of the SouthFlorida gunmen's story is hard to believe, you'll die laughing when youread, "The Shih Master's Thermos" with Christian and his antics. Christian is a true Provincetown character.There's even a story aboutMarilyn Monroe "The Last Performance" which has a real twist toit. How sad that this beautiful, important collection of stories is already out of print, having only been published in 1995.With such "important" writers as Susan Sontag and Paul Monette and David Leavitt as contributors, this compilation is one that must be read and savored.The title refers, obviously, to the way that AIDS has forced itself into the daily lives of all of us.Who among us does not know someone who is now ill or who has already died of this disease?In point of fact, several of the writers in this volume are dead. But the volume is not a polemic.It is a wonderful, moving, at times funny, entertaining collection. My personal favorite is "In The Gloaming" by a writer I had previously never encountered:Alice Elliott Dark.
