5-0 out of 5 stars Terrific anthology for any book collection
I bought this book because one of the stories was written by the outstanding Jane Rule.
5-0 out of 5 stars A groundbreaking brilliant engaging anthology
The twenty-eight stories in this 1980 anthology include writers whose names are today familiar to most readers: Dorothy Allison, Audre Lorde, Jewelle Gomez, Elizabeth Lynn, Jane Rule, etc.But those names were not well known when Elly Bulkin created this incredibly valuable book.As wonderful as most of the stories are, and they really are wonderful, the introduction Bulkin wrote (27 pages long)is worth the price of the book.It is a brilliant work of scholarly recovery, literary history, and the very best kind of analysis. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars A Warning
The stories are a mixed bag but well worth a look. All I really want to add to other readers' comments, though, is that the book was poorly proofread -- it is riddled with typos. If as a collector that kind of thing bothers you, you should be aware of this.

5-0 out of 5 stars worth seeking out
Sigh. There are so few fantasy novels and stories with interesting gay and lesbian characters (especially lesbian). In a perfect world, this volume of short stories might only be mediocre, but because it's one of the only anthologies of its kind, it's downright wonderful!4-0 out of 5 stars Mind-bending fantasy
Because of its diverse bouquet of erotic undercurrents, BTL: Fantasy is especially adept with wry, bittersweet fantasies - not the swords-and-sorcery type, but touching tales with a modern-supernatural slant. There are all sorts of uplifting motifs here - getting over midlife crises (Antieau's "Desire"), revisiting childhood places ( Thrower's "The Home Town Boy"), dealing with the deaths of friends (Shepherd's "Gary, in the Shadows") and loved ones (Silverthrorne's "The Sound of Angels"), release and spiritual freedom (What's "Beside the Well"), turning back the clock on painful memories (Verona's "Mahu"), and so on.

5-0 out of 5 stars Utterly believable, interesting characters
I read this book 3 yrs ago and have been waiting anxiously for Mr. Huston to write something else.He masterfully, deftly renders characters.Jane would have been 2 dimensional and awful in the hands of any other writer, but she seemed wonderful and alive and completely insane."Freud'sBig Trouble" was my favorite, though;it seemed one of the mostcomplete and well done short stories I've read in a long while.I'm verytempted to compare Mr. H. with Flannery O'Connor, and to my mind therewould be no higher compliment.Does anybody know when/if he will publishagain? ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Not afraid of Virginia Woolf in more than one story
Recently I read that Virginia Woolf wrote a letter from a mental nursing home stating, "I feel my brains, like a pear to see if it's ripe: it will be exquisite by September."Now I understand the photograph of the pear with the bite out of it on the cover of this clever book of short fiction. The homage to Virginia Woolf in the story "Mrs Dalloway Went That-Away" opens even farther the door on the Bloomsbury closet. And brings Woolf into the contemporary scene. The screenplay about the Grand Duchess Anastasia reads very nicely on the page. Over-all an enjoyable evening's read.

5-0 out of 5 stars Movie Buff loves these entertaining filmic stories
What a surprise to find the "Mrs. Dalloway" Legend of Virginia Woolf spinning out of Michael Cunningham's novel "The Hours" into not only the film versions of Vanessa Redgrave's "Mrs. Dalloway" and Nicole Kidman's "The Hours" but also into Jack Fritscher's extraordinary fusion of a short story, "Mrs. Dalloway Went That-A-Way." For movie fans and literary sleuths like me, the tricks all these writers use is a joy. "Mrs. Dalloway Went That-A-Way" is a great story in this collection of really entertaining short fiction.(This must be the first short story about "Civil Union" in Vermont.) The stories are called "coffee house stories," and the subtitle is a point well made. Well done.

5-0 out of 5 stars A diverse and representative compilation
Sweet Embraceable You is a diverse and representative compilation of eight totally engaging short stories by experienced and gifted storyteller and writer Jack Fritscher. These original and highly entertaining stories include Mrs. Dalloway Went That-A-Way; The Unseen Hand In The Lavender Light; The Story Knife; Missing Persons; Silent Mothers, Silent Sons; Duchess: Berlin 1928; Kweenasheba; and the title story, Sweet Embraceable You. Enthusiastically recommended recreational reading! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Sons of the Violet Quill
In the early 80's, after Stonewall and before the holocaust of the AIDS epidemic, a group of gay writers formed a literary club in New York called the Violet Quill and changed forever gay literature in the U. S. Sadly only three of them are still alive, Edmund White, Andrew Holleran and Felice Picano. In this first rate anthology edited by David Bergman, Holleran and Picano are included. Holleran's "The Married Man" may be the best story here and is as good as anything he has written. His view of the world is not rose-colored as his characters rarely find much happiness in long term relationships. What is one to expect, however, from a writer who almost 25 years after the publication of his fine first novel DANCER FROM THE DANCE-- by anyone's standards a gay classic-- and almost as many years since the first reported AIDS cases in New York still refuses to use his real name in his writings.
4-0 out of 5 stars A satisfying roller-coaster
This collection of gay-themed short stories is, as it's 6 predecessors, a very good sample of what's going on in the gay literary world. Men on Men offers a delicious buffet of varied styles, stories and characters. Some ofthem are excellent and leave you hungry for more, some are forgettable butnot one is simply bad ! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A DOG, A GLASS OF WINE, A FIREPLACE...REQUIRED FOR THIS BOOK
THE GAY DECAMERON is one of those books that requires that you have time to read with purpose.Ideally, this book should be read in a personal library, with a roaring fireplace, a glass of fine wine at hand, and a loyal dog curled up at your feet. Why? Because it is one of those artistic works that should be savoured. Why?Simply because of its intricate construction.I had misgivings when I contemplated reading it, and indeed, questioned if I could dedicate the time needed to fully absorb the content.I'm very glad I opted to devote the time. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars This is a book which is so brilliant, it shines in the dark.
Author Elise Levine uses words as if they were lightening bolts, red hot pokers, sun bursts and roman candles. Each word dazzles, kindles, scorches, inflames and sets the reader's imagination on fire. Yet this psychicburning leads not to annihilation, but to the purification which must comebefore enlightenment. These words are then uttered by characters asdevastating as fire-breathing dragons, as delicate as fireflies, asfamiliar as our own incandescent selves. Long after the book has been read, these stories stay smouldering in the shadowy corners of the mind, likeembers which refuse to die or an afterglow reluctant to fade away. OscarWilde once said, "All of us are in the gutter, but some of us arelooking at the stars." Elise Levine reminds us that those stars can beseen by lookingdown as well as up, by seeking within as well as without, and that reflections can be as true as reality. DRIVING MEN MAD is adisturbing book, a scintillating book, and a book which is ultimately sobrilliant that it shines in the dark.

5-0 out of 5 stars Short stories for a life-time of thought
Elise Levine's Driving Men Mad is an incredible work of art.She writes with provocative skill and an intuition that creates splendor for the mind.A women's book.A lover's book.A feminist's book.A lesbian's book. She writes of real people doing real things, and dealing with real issues. Not for the faint of heart, as she will move you, cause you to question yourself, hurt you, please you, relate to you, and hold you in the palm of her hand. She will bring you into another world; one, that after reading this book, you'll never be able to escape.Read it.Remember it ...
