5-0 out of 5 stars Your CoWorkers Should Read This Book
This is an excellent text. I highly recommend it for anyone involved in LGBT issues. This highly readable text will appeal to readers of all stripes, all orientations, so leave it out where others will see it... and wait to see who picks it up! Come out of the closet and bring someone with you. It's a wonderful journey.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must read for anyone interested in LGBT issues
I have to admit that I was pleasantly surprised with "Overcoming Heterosexism and Homophobia: Strategies that Work." Given its title (which to be honest does not exactly inspire confidence as to its"readability") and its size (448 pages of really fine print.Whoa!), I was really expecting yet another dry, boring, overly academictext that I was going to have to struggle through, not just to understandbut to stay awake as well. But yet, as soon as I started reading it, I wascaught off guard by two things: One, I was actually able to read the essaysstraight through and understand them the first time I read them (as opposedto having to read the same paragraph three or four or more times becausethe language is so dense and cumbersome as to be incomprehensible); andtwo, I found myself wanting to read more of the book. I felt the book did agreat job of not only incorporating a great deal of information in a fresh,easy-to-understand manner, it also managed to be comprehensive withoutnecessarily becoming overwhelming. "Overcoming" was that rarebook that actually got me from the first chapter and kept me reading.Furthermore, it has been a long time since I got this excited reading abook, i.e. it was really enjoyable to read, and incredibly informative!"Overcoming Heterosexism and Homophobia: Strategies that Work" isdefinitely an invaluable resource for anyone interested in LGBT issues, andparticularly for those individuals or organizations looking for ways todevelop and implement programs that specifically address issues pertainingto homophobia and/or heterosexism. ... An exciting account of medieval sexuality?Surprisingly, yes.Loyola University English professor Frantzen brings the "shadows" of same-sex relations ("as closely attached to heterosexual relations asshadows are to their objects") into relief by highlighting theircentrality in everything from operatic "trouser roles," in whichwomen dress as men in ambiguous visions of female-female desire, to thedances of Mark Morris, which "offer gay people entertainment andaffirmation of the highest order." Turning to his specialty, Frantzenreveals an Anglo-Saxon world much less prudish than we are accustomed toimagining.Where "queer theory" has sought to uncover gayliberation in the past, his "assimilationist" model never limitssame-sex desire to genital contact. An engaging and witty guide to talesof cross-dressing saints, legal codes payingmuch more attention toheterosexual than homosexual misbehavior and references to "Sodom andGomorrah" less severe than one would expect, he discovers bothself-identified same-sex lovers and a culture that allowed them a certainlicense.Pointing out the nationalist chauvinism of the numeroushistorians who have labeled William the Conqueror's son gay, Frantzen alsomakes clear the vast difference between medieval and modern conceptions ofsexual identity.Frantzen's marvelous book, concluding with a fascinatingdiscussion of how Angels in America reverses Anglo-Saxon codes of nationalunification, opens up a world most readers will never have even known wasthere. It's a difficult topic, but Frantzen's comprehensive, readable andeven wryly funny treatment makes this an unexpected pleasure. 5-0 out of 5 stars An important shift in emphasis
Laura Doan has done a great deal of original archival research3-0 out of 5 stars History/ Literature/ Lesbian Images
Doan examines how the Well of Loneliness trial and the appearance of its author Hall helped codify an image of "lesbian" for audiences in the late 1920s. The image of the 1920s "modern" woman in other British organizations is also examined. Some interesting photos but more academic than other recent books on lesbian images/history. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Lyrical! Passionate! Exquisite!
WOW!!! This book is amazing. I don't usually care much for poetry, as I often find it dull or impossible to relate to. But this poetry was beautiful and moving. I could hardly put it down, wanting to wallow more in the luscious words, but at the same time I wanted to save the poems, to make the experience last as long as possible. The experience did last - I have read these poems over and over again, and each time I love and appreciate them more.5-0 out of 5 stars Wow.
This is one of my favorite poetry collections.Oh, how much love, passion, laughter and tears are within these pages.I read it, front to back, in a day.I couln't put it down. What wonderful words to read and inspire a heart with love.
