5-0 out of 5 stars The best Beat book I've read in years!
For anyone who thinks they've heard it all--and even for those who haven't--Queer Beats breaks through a new door of history of this much loved group of writers. Regina Marler has brought together a fun and fascinating array of stories, letters, poems, and journals that I simply could not put down. Rarely have I seen the Beats handled so throughly and deftly by one writer. That she tackles the hot topic of sexuality as expertly as she does on top of all else is doubly impressive. Marler's introductory essays are also so full of Beat lore, gossip and sex that her own writing is worth the price of the book alone! Aftering reading this, you'll never look at the Beats the same again.

5-0 out of 5 stars A FRESH TAKE ON AMERICA'S BEAT WRITERS
For latecomers who may have only read one or two canonic Beat works (say ON THE ROAD and "Howl"), or for those who once read masses of the stuff but never grasped the overall flow of the movement, Regina Marler's introduction to QUEER BEATS is invaluable. She charts their progress from Ginsberg's 1948 experience, part sexual, part religious, of "hearing" William Blake read his poems in a voice like that of God, down through the notoriety and popularization of "beatniks," to the historic legal decisions of 1957-66 that lifted the bans against "Howl," Henry Miller's TROPIC OF CANCER, and NAKED LUNCH, and forever changed what could be published in America.

5-0 out of 5 stars A book every gay-supportive therapist should own!
This book is huge; no one could get through the whole thing. It has a long table of contents. That's what makes it so good:it covers so many subjects.I loved that it had specific chapters on gay Natives, Blacks, Latinos, and Asians.Others will love that it talks extensively about lesbians, bisexuals, older gays, and gay youth. This was a well-conceived, very extensive anthology. And it's not too touchy-feely either.I would recommend that all gay and gay-friendly therapists buy it and recommend it to their coming-out and anti-heterosexist clients. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful survey of lesbian history
I read this book when I was newly out and went through the "read everything remotely queer" stage. This is truly a gem. It is everything a work of history should be: engaging, informative and well-crafted.
5-0 out of 5 stars Empowering and Engaging
Odd Girls and Twilight Lovers is a fascinating work that traces the cultural history of lesbianism in the United States -- providing a broad and thorough overview of lesbianism's diversity, its relationship to feminism, and its evolving forms of resistance in relationship to the oppressions of the dominant culture.Perhaps what is most impressive about this book is that while it is an impressively researched and intellectually stimulating piece of scholarship, it is also an extremely engaging read.Faderman draws the reader into lesbian cultural history in a way that is never clinical, but compellingly human--under her treatment, the lesbian subculture emerges in all of its varied complexity, its celebratory subversiveness, as a fascinatingly rich and vibrant culture of historical, political, and sexual significance. This book is a marvelous introduction to lesbian culture and history . . . it is entertaining, empowering, and utterly engaging.

5-0 out of 5 stars An important work
Lillian Faderman has written some of the best works on the lesbian experience throughout the ages, and "Odd Girls and Twilight Lovers" is no exception. She covers every facet of the subculture from the turn of the 20th century to the present day with impeccable scholarship, and her writing is engaging and highly readable. She examines everything from 1950's butch/femme, 70's lesbian feminism, and the resurgence of trendy "lipstick lesbians" with equal attention. This book is a must-have for every queer library, and is an important contribution to the cause of lesbian visiblity. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars An uncommonly perceptive critique
Jay Prosser's book (in addition to being uniquely insightful) occupies a unique place in the growing (trans)gender studies canon: it is the only one that engages seriously with the specificity of transsexual (as distinct from transgender) identification, and critically examines the points of critical divergence between the two (or the several, if you prefer). His readings of the Well of Loneliness and Stone Butch Blues, as well as the appended consideration of transsexual photographic self-portrait (which is as moving as it is insightful) are, quite simply, not to be missed.A must.

1-0 out of 5 stars This was...
I had to read this book for a class at University of Milwaukee-Wisconsin, and I will never, ever recommend this... to anyone. Is he really trying to reach people?Or just other PhD peoples?Gimme a break. ... Read more
