Make sure you are with your partner when you read this. If not you make take matters in to your own hands (fingers).5-0 out of 5 stars A great book on female sex, love and desire.
A book that both partners can really get into. It promotes thinking and gives plenty of thought for action. The stories are well written, never boring or dull; fast paced and very soft and sexy. It would truly be atragedy if they were not true, but rather just the ramblings of a goodimagineation. The authors are sharp, quick thinking, intelligent and giveyou an up-close view via your mind what female-to-female sex is reallylike. I, as a male who is facinated with the subject, found the stories tobe about as real sounding as real sex can be. My hat is off to all thosewho practice lesbian sex truthfully, and with all of their heart, as anytrue relationship should be run. This book is great at any price anytime. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Buy it for Greg Wharton's story, "First Cut"
This is an interesting collection, similar to the Queer Fear series. As with any collection of stories there are highlights. I particularly liked the marvellously neurotic lesbian mindspace of Carol Rosenfeld's rabbit tale. Greg Wharton's gruesome "First Cut" is enough to make any reader wince, focussing as it does on bloody details.5-0 out of 5 stars Wow! Queer horror at its best!
I can't even begin to say how much I enjoyed this book. Some of my favorite writers contributed to this book, and I discovered some new writers I'd never heard of before--and will be watching out for their other work!Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Bull- Jean Rules
I have had this book for several years and each time I reread a story I gain a new appreciation for this book.I want more of Bull-Jean.

5-0 out of 5 stars More Fun Than A Movie
In the haze of a Michigan Women's Festival delerium, standing next to Sharon Bridgforth in a bookstall, I bought her book, along with any other lesbian book of poetry I thought I might like. I've since reread this book repeatedly, recommended it repeatedly, and offer this opinion: If you like women, if you like to laugh, if you like a heart-breaking, soul-warming story, buy this book. Buy 12 of them.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Blues like they were meant to be sung!
Sharon Bridgforth is a conjurer. She captures the voices of folks on the pages of this book whose stories would otherwise be lost in the wind.I laughed out loud, big old belly laughs, and read the stories aloud tofriends and family. This writer is a descendant of Langston Hughes and allthe folks who tell stories on the corner, in the back of the church, in thebeauty parlor and on the porch, looking at the sunset. Her deeply feltprose and poetry is redeeming.Thank you for one of the most enjoyableexperiences I've had as a reader in recent memory! ... Editorial Review

Jenifer Levin has received acclaim for her novels, particularly Water Dancer and The Sea of Light. This collection of short stories, her first, covers her writing from 1977 to 1995 and treats us to a fine sampling of her talent and imagination. In an introduction, Levin notes that many of these pieces could not be published when they were written because explicitly sexual and butch/fem themes were not considered "appropriate" for lesbian writing. Levin has lasted longer than her critics, and this Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Massive, Hard Hitting Talent
As a general rule I simply avoid short stories. If they're any good they're over just as your interest is piqued. But this is Jenifer Levin and the length just doesn't affect the unbelievable quality of her work.In this case..size truly doesn't matter <snicker>.This woman can flat out do it for me in just a few pages. She's awesome. I hope she's out there and pounding away at a keyboard creating another magnificent & mind blowing feast for me to delve into and relish. Thank you, Ms. Levin. ... Read more

Editorial Review

A new book by Ruthann Robson is always a cause for celebration. This latest offering is a collection of eight thoughtful, loosely linked stories, many drawing on Robson's experiences as a law professor and theorist. In "Black Squirrels," for instance, a disabled and displaced college professor plots ways to undermine the development of a shopping mall down the street from her rural home. The two best stories here are the deceptively simple "Review," in which an overly zealous young writer submits her first book review--a savage critique of a new novel by an established writer--and learns with horror that the novelist has killed herself soon after reading it, and "Death of the Subject," in which a psychic tries to help her cop girlfriend unravel a local crime (the title is a nod to postmodern theory that only makes sense in the last line of the story, like the kick in a Bloody Mary). 5-0 out of 5 stars Another coup for Robson
Ruthann Robson is undoubtedly one of the most talented voices in contemporary lesbian fiction, and The Struggle for Happiness is, not surprisingly, wholly compelling from start to finish. As with her earlierworks, I found it difficult to put the book down for even a moment. Robsonfully fleshes out her characters in each tale; her protagonists' darkersides are exposed unflinchingly, resulting in a decidedly intriguing--andfar from light-hearted--story collection.I was especially touched by"Pas de Deux" and "Women's Music," but do read thestories straight through from the beginning; you'll find interestingconnections among discrete characters. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars *In The Deep Heart's Core* is where she takes us
This is my 2nd Becky Birtha collection of short stories ... and although it might be hard to believe ... it is better than the first!! I have read the last selection *In The Life* outloud to ten other women and each one has become a Birtha fan.BB has the gift of telling our heart's stories in her short pictures ... she paints with a brillant brush! My favorite tells us of women having grown old and deep in their love ... so deep that when one of them dies, the other still speaks, shares and cares with her love and sees thru the eyes of that love -- Gracie & Pearl are precious. In the Deep Heart's Core tells the story of reaching a hand from one generation to another, while Past Halfway begins in the pain of breakup but leads us thru the need to let go, seek your own answers, find your own way, make connections. These are glorious gifts BB hands to us.Find it, read it, share it ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Combining Two Worlds!
Here's a collection of 17 short fantasy stories from an author who knows how to be funny as well as push a lot of buttons to get his points across. He's created a new and exciting kind of gay writing through alternative worlds of the supernatural where individuals, no matter your age, gender or sexual orientation can be free to be whoever they wish to be."Take Back the Night" about a lesbian bookstore owner was fascinating reading that would make anyone hope they never run into a wolf.I was equally thrilled with the stories; "Fag Hag" and "Coming Out of the Broom Closet".What an imagination Schimel has. This is a collection of fantasy stories that should not be missed, written by a young author who seems to have a talent for tackling difficult subjects and making them light but fascinating reading for all of us. 5-0 out of 5 stars *smirk*
I laughed, I cried, I got vaguely grossed out about horse racing, and I loaned it to my best friend, who also loved it.5-0 out of 5 stars Fantasy with a splendidly modern sensibility
Lawrence Schimel's short stories address the fantasy genre from a perspective firmly rooted in contemporary queer society with results that are both delightful and poignant. He manages to pack more emotional resonance into his stories (the longest of which are just over a dozen pages) than many writers manage to get into entire novels. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Mosaic of connections between family & friends
A beautifully written series of interlocked stories about a small group of women, all either friends, family, or exlovers. Kobayashi evokes in a sort of poetic fire clearly the sometimes joyful, sometimes painful ties peoplehave with each other. Even though the characters are women and most arelesbians, the overall story can clearly portray parallels in any familyunit, whether chosen or hereditary. Resonates along with Sarah Schulman's"Rat Bohemia" or Alison Bechdel's series "Dykes to Watch outfor". ... Read more

Editorial Review

It's no secret that commercial markets for short stories have been drying up for the past 30 years. This is considered a reflection of the diminishing readership for short fiction, and, as a result--with the occasional startling exception--book advances are small, reviews scarce, and promotion negligible. The prophets of literary doom have more or less ignored gay and lesbian fiction, however, where the short story flourishes among a feisty and increasingly discerning readership. "At the end of the 1990s," notes Emma Donoghue, "the only difficulty in compiling a collection of three decades of superb lesbian stories is that there are so many to choose from." Perhaps the best and widest-ranging of recent anthologies, the Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars 30 years of fiction from an international selection of authors
I bought this book because one of the stories was written by the outstanding Jane Rule.
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book
First off, Emma she's an amazing writer, I actually borrowed the book from the Library, once I started reading it, I couldn't put it down, it was that good. Some of the stories I could identify with and it also helped me withsome problems I was going through, this book is a definite plus in my book,if you haven't gotten it or read it you should, go for it! .

5-0 out of 5 stars wonderful collection
The variety of stories in this book is wonderful; some are risque, some are tragic, some are terribly romantic... sexy, sad, nostalgic, and funny. Most times I couldn't put it down. My favorite story has to be "TheLobster Queen" because it reminds me so much of my first romantic...episode with a woman. It's positively heart-wrenching. Other excellentstories include "The Woman Who Loved the Moon," "The DarkHouse," "The Burning Times," and "The CatherineTrilogy." (That was devestating. I cried myself to sleep after readingthat.) One the whole, this book is great. I would recommend it to anyone, straight or not so straight, because it offers so many honest and variedviews on lesbians and lesbianism. It's compassionate. It's tender. It willwin your heart. ... Read more
