Smart, funny humor by lesbians and gay men
Debra Waugh had a vision -- a collection of frank, heartfelt misery called"Ex-Lover Weird Shit." The book had to include writing by bothlesbians and gay men. The title was set. She got the writing and cartoons,then did a superb job of choosing and editing, but no publisher would turnthe collection into a book. Why, you couldn't have gay men and lesbians inthe same book! -- no one would buy it. And the title had to go. How about"Ex-Lover Weird Stuff?" Shaking her head at the world's weirdprejudices, Waugh formed her own publishing company, Two Out of ThreeSisters Press (TOOTS), and produced a marvel. If a lover has ever broken upwith you, buy this book. Never mind your sexual preference. For some kindsof pain, laughter -- especially combined with plain clear good writing --is the only drug that works. over rated- low talent
Seriously, this author has been given acclaim that is not deserving. I have now read two books by Tremblay and feel duped. The books are over written, melodramatic and fantasy. Not at all entertaining. Though, I do think he has possible potential as a playwright.

Metaphor for quebecois identity.
Different from the traditional idea of the "drag queen," Hosanna, an aging man confronts his demons, from socio-economic status, linguistic autonomy and masculinity. Hosanna speaks in Joual, the quebecois dialect and as she recounts her story she engages the reader's empathy. Michel Tremblay in an interview was clear that Hosanna represented the state of the quebecois when this piece was written (1971). Hosanna is wearing a mask of strength to hide her vulnerablities both in body and linguistic identity. Her Cleopatra suit and Drag Queenpersona is her protection against anglo-culture.Tremblay is a prolific author and his characters vast. His work is akin to Balzac's "Comedie Humaine." For a good read, with universal appeal and a small history lesson. I would recommend any of Tremblay's work. No matter what walk of life, you will love Hosanna because one can easily identify with her very human crisis of existence. ... Read more
