Readers of Linda Smukler's previous work--she is widely published in poetry journals and has an earlier book--will immediately recognize her trademark form: neatly justified prose-poem paragraphs. The look of these paragraphs and the photographs that face them on opposite pages are as visually arresting as the words. Smukler explores the appearance of desire and how the love/sex object is seen in the context of what has come before, the history and fantasies that shape our present. Taking off on Napoleon's plea to Josephine, "Home In Three Days. Ambiguity makes these poems difficult but more beauitful.
I bought Sappho's Gymnasium by Olga Broumas and T Begley on the basis of the first-lines listed on Amazon.com. High hopes, low fulfillment
Since I've always been fascinated with Sappho, I was excited when I came across this book.What a disappointment.The writing is sketchy and unfleshed.The plot seems like little more than an excuse to show Sappholusting after everyone she comes into contact with.I never thought I'dsay this, but I actually got tired of lesbian sex scenes.Worst of all,the character of Sappho herself never becomes real or sympathetic.I hadhigh hopes for this book, and it didn't come close to fulfilling them. There are good points (interweaving of poetry into the text, details ofancient Greek culture, some intriguing insights) but they are faroutweighed by bad ones.

Sappho, the tenth muse is a difficult book to read.
Freedman's novel reads like non-fiction.99% of her extensive research appears to have found it's way onto the pages. Within the first 20 pages, Freedman offers a child abuse excuse for The Poetesses later fascinationwith her own gender.And, in these same 20 pages, Sappho is seen droolingover a collection of muscles and external genitalia with little brains whowill eventually exile her from her home. To make matters worse, Freedmanends with the apocraphal story of Sappho and Phaeon (a fiction fabricatedby Ovid for the amusement of Rome) For those of us who love The Lesbian,this novel will bring pain, sorrow and little enjoyment. Poetic pyrotechnics from a radical voice
"Living As a Lesbian" is a stunning collection of poetry by Cheryl Clarke. As the title indicates, much of the book's content revolves around loving and surviving as a lesbian in the 20th century. Clarke also writes about racism and injustice, and reflects upon the people and events of her world. Much of the book has a gritty, urban flavor to it.Read more
