5-0 out of 5 stars buy this one for yourself and a single, aging friend
15 or 20 years ago - more or less - Valerie Taylor wrote a pretty good book about aging women falling in love.Although I don't pretend to have read every book in the lesbian bibliography, I haven't seen another book that was about women in their sixties falling in love with each other until now - and Mulligan is a good one.MacGregor is an excellent writer. Her books are filled with believable characters and in general her plots are realistic.
5-0 out of 5 stars A Winner

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful romantic story of two women from the 60's to today
This novel has something for everyone (I especially like the title!), young and older couples, humor, drama, deception and intrigue, set in wonderful locations throughout the U.S.

5-0 out of 5 stars Mystery! Suspense!
Free-lance photographer, Kate Ryan is asked by friends to investigate a series of "incidents" at the home of their friend, Dr. Margaret "Maggie" Winfield. An investigation that Kate hesitates to undertake for reasons that still wound her soul.Nevertheless, she agrees to help only to find that Maggie doesn't want it. Why?
5-0 out of 5 stars My First of Many Reviews
I just finished "She Waits" by Kate Sweeney, and I want to let one and all know what a great book this is.Since my first Nancy Drew at nine years old, I have loved reading and this book is a perfect example of why.The sometimes clumsy but always engaging Kate Ryan is now one of my favorite heroines, transportingme into the midst of her adventures with great humor, leading the pack from somewhere in the middle, and solving other people's problems while doing her best to face her own.The author has surrounded her with family and friends who are so well written you feel as if you've known them all your life. Add the clever plot, complete with twists and surprises and just a hint of romance (which I am eager to see develop in the series), and you have one of the most entertaining books I've read in some time. This first-time out for author Kate Sweeney couldn't be more fun and enjoyable and I expect the rest of the series will be more of the same.

4-0 out of 5 stars The klutzy detective
Kate Sweeney introduces a new mystery series with her first book She Waits. Her heroine Kate Ryan is a klutz. She doesn't mean to be, but Kate can't seem to do much without having an accident of some sort.Kate was once a private investigator, but, after a horrible incident that is never fully explained, she gave up that occupation to become a very successful wildlife photographer. When the book opens, she is on her way to Galena, Ill., to spend a peaceful weekend with her sister. While she is in the area, some friends have asked her to visit a friend of theirs who is having some problems.Maggie Winfield has had some strange things happen to her and her friends are hoping that Kate can help her figure out what is going on.Maggie doesn't want anyone else to help her, especially Kate after the way they meet.Kate is driving down the road and nearly hits Maggie as she crosses the road at a high rate of speed on her horse. As the mystery unfolds it is clear that Maggie's rather eccentric family is hiding secrets and that these secrets are related to what is happening to Maggie. There is a string of unusual deaths, including Maggie's parents and a long time family employee.Maggie is quite wealthy and her death would make someone very rich. Then there's the ex-girlfriend Allison who seems to be tied into everything.Kate has more clues than she knows what to do with and they don't seem to fit together.

5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing
I've been reading this series periodically catching up with the collections here and there, but it didn't really hit me until this collection just how great this series is.The art work, pacing of the panels, the whole thing with David, his visions of his sister, those first two pencil drawings of Francine in the cherry pajamas and of course the humor ("I want to have a baby, your baby") all just flows together. It's a shame its soon to be coming to a close when it appears Mr. Moore has perfected everything that's great about his comic. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Meet the "Bad" Girl on the "Good" Side of the Law
When I first picked up this book and realized the main character is named "Tori Hunter," I was a little concerned. You see, I live in Minnesota and one of my favorite players on the Minnesota Twins baseball team is outfielder Torii Hunter.Let me put your fears to rest... Tori in the book is NOTHING like Torii on the field... She's much, much more intriguing.

This title couldn't have portrayed my own life in a more realistic fashion. Ariel Schrag is an absolute genius!

5-0 out of 5 stars Funny and honest without being sentimental
Ariel's work is beautiful and compelling. Her high school coming-of-age story is so personal, so awkward, so terrible, and still so delirious with potential... you'll recognize it immediately.Five stars.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book But Sad
This is an awesome book.I love to read and at this point, I have read so much - I am a hard to please reader. The prose is simple, yet it will grab and hold your attention. In fact, before I comment on the story, let me say that if you are an aspiring writer - this is a good book to read just to see what simple, yet very engaging prose looks like.I don't care what kind of writer you are, if you have to communicate anything to anyone in "words," you will benefit from reading this.

4-0 out of 5 stars "Fate and entanglement...have begun again."
Considered a seminal work in the history of lesbian fiction, "Nightwood" by Djuna Barnes is the tale of Robin Vote--a woman who leaves disaster in her wake through her strangely disaffected love affairs. The book begins with the background story of half-Jewish Baron Felix Volkbein--a man with a fabricated ancestry who speaks seven languages, and who possesses a deep-rooted love of the "pageantry of kings and queens." This love translates to a fascination with the accessible circus and the theatre crowd, and he mingles with various circus performers and actors who've assumed fancy titles to "dazzle." In this colourful company, Baron Volkbein "clung to his title to dazzle his own estrangement."
2-0 out of 5 stars Very Disappointing
I had such high hopes going in, what with Eliot's singing praises and all sorts of reputable people claiming this book to be a lost Modernist gem, but they were dashed by actually trying to read the work. Grueling is perhaps the best word one can use to describe the feeling one attempts when tackling this book, and then annoyance with the realization that it is all for naught. Contrary to what Eliot says in relation to its poetic qualities, her writing is messy and unfulfilling. And the content? It was often very hard to discern what it even was(which, for me, is not an automatic strike against a book) and, even worse, was very, very dated. However, there were some moments when, as another reviewer has noted, Barnes will have a single sentence or phrase that makes one's heart skip a beat, but these are few and far between. And, as one last note, before actually reading this book, I disregarded many of its negative reviews as being indicative of laziness or incompetence on the other reviewers' parts in relation to my superior reading skills, but now, I must abashedly say, that this is just not a very good book.

3-0 out of 5 stars The Night Is A Hunter
Djuna Barnes' short modernist novel Nightwood (1936) is one of the genuine odd ducks of 20th century literature.Written in an uneven, semi - comic, and baroque style, the book is more likely to impress young readers rather than older and more experienced individuals who have lost their appetite for decadent romantic entanglements.Nightwood is certainly an original work, and Barnes' vision of the factors shaping human destiny - especially time, heritage, and evolution - are uniquely expressed. But despite its fluidity of language, many of Barnes' seemingly brilliant observations concerning life, consciousness, and human suffering are more specious than acute, which is important, since Barnes' emotionally marooned cast is badly in need of answers, wisdom, and salvation.

5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing Book
It seems that a lot of people have already summarized the book, so I wont bother doing that again. All I will say is that it is an absolutely amazing book. After stumbling across many cheesy GLBT books it was very refreshing to pick up a book and have it feel so real. It's a book that I think a lot of people can relate to, especially if you have ever experienced being an outcast. It is defenitely worth a read. I loved it.

4-0 out of 5 stars gender & class.
This book was given to me by a friend - a friend who also identified as stone butch, and who now IDs as trans. At the time, many years ago, it was really just a book that was supposed to give me an idea of what her life was like. Although I don't think the writing is all it could be - Les Feinberg is better at speeches and non-fiction prose, in my humble opinion - the impact this book had on my life can't be underestimated. It's one of the only books written not just by a lesbian and butch, but also by someone who lived a working-class life. As a result, so much of the book deals with what I'd call the real world: working in a blue-collar industry, dating women, dealing with family estrangement but also innate homophobia. The one scene that really hangs in my memory is one where the narrator has started taking T and is passing for male, and dating a woman who is straight. At some point, the woman says something deeply homophobic, and the convolutions of thought that go on in the narrator's head at that time are enlightening. S/he wonders exactly what would happen to hir if that same woman were to really what/who the narrator really was; the fear in that scene is palpable. And practical. And realistic.

5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing book about fight for Gay and Lesbian rights
Very important book. Taking a course in Lesbian Literature, I have to say it's been a humble experience. There are so many terms and stuff to learn that a lot of the evil things done to Lesbians and Gays happen. It just goes to show you despite the b.s. about this being a free country you are always attacked for being different. This book written by Leslie Fienberg follows the story of Jesse Goldberg a lesbian coming to grips about her sexuality. Unfortunately for her she is living in 50's in a very politically correct and paranoid time in the USA. She is attacked, raped her and beat upon by cops and other heterosexuals for being a lesbian. Her world stars to change when she meets others like her and learns the "Butch" lifestyle. Feinberg does a great job in showing and exploring different relationship among the gay community while showing how discriminatory the straight community.

5-0 out of 5 stars 5th and final book of the series
I was left wanting more at the end of 4, I loved how 5 just picked up right were 4 left off. As with the other 4 books, I could not put it down. I was happy with the out come, but sad that the series was done. Radclyffe is a wonderful writer and I look forward to reading her other books.

5-0 out of 5 stars Heartstopping Suspense!
In the days beyond one of the worst disasters to hit American soil, Secret Service Agent Cameron Roberts and what's left of her team fight to make sense of everything that's happened. And make sense of why one of their own would betray them in leading an attack on Cameron's lover Blair Powell, who happens to be the daughter of the President of the United States. An act Cam could not perceive let alone understand.

5-0 out of 5 stars Bittersweet Captures Feelings and History
As a long-term fan of Barr's Anna Pigeon mysteries, I was delighted to find this departure equally as entertaining, if not more so.She manages to capture both the time and setting down to the most minute details and moves us in to live in the characters' lives. It is somewhat reminiscent of the historical parts of her book Flashback, but with more detail. It also presents a subject I had never read or thought about before, how gay women were treated in the 19th Century.Fascinating book.

1-0 out of 5 stars HUH? Please....
Guess I was expecting toomuch. I've enjoyed other Nevada Barr works but this one is a stinker. I only regret the time I lost trudging through it. I was sure it was going to get better...It didn't.I was loathe to give it one star. Yuck. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Curious????
I loved this book and have read it many times over the years. It is pretty fast paced, but what the heck at least there was no U-Haul involved.
4-0 out of 5 stars Endlessly Re-readable
Curious Wine was part of the beginning of my lesbian book collection (having come out in the mid-80's). It's still one of my favorite lesbian romances after all these years. I am not one to re-read books much, but I do have a short list of select lesbian novels that I tend to re-read every 1-2 years as sort of my "lezzie break" from reading everything else that I do, the majority of which is written by and about straight people. Curious Wine is right smack at the top of that list. (Along with one of Forrest's other novels, Emergence of Green.)
