5-0 out of 5 stars Transcendentally Excellent
I saw that this book had not yet been reviewed. It was so good that I had to try to encourage others to pick it up. I read it at work & many of my co-workers could not understand how a book on AIDS could be good. It must be too depressing. Well, yes. It is sad. But so is Long Days Journey into Night, Anne Frank's Diary & many other works of an enduring nature. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Once upon a time, to tell your lover for a goodnight.
Cashorali takes the old well known tales and shifts them the little to the pink side and makes them a little treasure, so close to gay men's livesthey never were. Sometimes simple, sometimes touching, but always with thatdeep, eternal wisdom the original tales had as well. With "the QueerGarment", a remake of "the emperors new clothing", he adds arefined ending to the plot and it seems as if he tells the true story, oneHans Christian Andersen never dared to tell.

5-0 out of 5 stars Beautifully written, wildly imaginative
Beautifully written, wildly imaginative fables, which puncture a great many sacred balloons, gay and straight.AIDS activists, government "scientists", doctors, suburban Parents of Gays, "QueerTheorists" -- all get their comeuppance.I could only read this booka few paragraphs at a time -- gasping, laughing, and then thinking.Andafter reflection, some of Ortleb's most shocking and outrageous statementsemerged as expressions of common sense and decency in a world goingviciously mad.The first story, "The Retraction", has the mostbrilliantly hilarious satirization of *Schadenfreude* since Mark Train's"Emmeline Grangerford" episode in *Huckleberry Finn*.Two of thestories, "Bruschetta on the Beach" and "Daddy's LittleClown", are masterpieces on a par with the best of Somerset Maugham orKatherine Mansfield.

4-0 out of 5 stars The Last Lovers on Earth
I recently read Charles Ortleb's book, "The Last Lovers On Earth." This is a group of short stories thattrace the fears, joys and sorrows of contemporary gay life. I am a heterosexual woman, still thisbook spoke to me on many levels. Ortleb's themes are universal: loneliness, the search for love that lasts, the value of true friendship, the huge costof betrayal. 4-0 out of 5 stars Sharp and On-Target
I have read and read again this poignant collection of short stories - each time laughing a little, crying a bit and always reflecting on how Ortleb's satirical voice should make us all stop and think about the society in which we live. The stories are full of witty one-liners whichyou remember long after the book is finished - and Ortleb has managed tospin a cast of charaters who are so familiar that you stop to wonder if heknows the same people you do. Underneath it all is a not-so-subtle wake upcall to end the ridiculous attitudes our society has about being gay orliving with AIDS.This is a book you will read more than once and is a"must" for anyone touched by the horror of AIDS.It is sure tobecome a benchmark in the search for truth and an eye-opener about adisease we thought we understood. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars A different world
With a subtle and graceful precision, Jones renders the lives of gay men and boys in Wales and of Welsh heritage. Through varying viewpoints, he explores notions of family, homophobia, coming out, and more in this excellent collection of short stories. Some of the stories tease and beg for more, and there are a few that are just not as compelling as others. All told, this is a remarkable book that will interest anyone curious about other cultures. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Good, especially Joe Keenan story
Like the other books in the Men on Men series, this is an enjoyable collection of stories by and for gay men. This book stands out from the others in that it has a story by the incredible Joe Keenan (with the same main characters as Blue Heaven and Puttin' On The Ritz). It's worth buying for that story alone. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars The elusive nature of attraction
In this incredibly refreshing and thought-provoking début novel, Blake Fraina delves into the quintessential nature of human attraction, and the primordial struggle for dominance within a relationship.
5-0 out of 5 stars Blake Fraina, I promise to buy your next book.
I actually bought this book about a year ago, but I just reread it and remembered how much I loved it.I could say a lot of things about it, and summarize the plot, but other customers have already done that so I won't bother. But I will say that this book does exactly what a great book should do: it affects you, and it leaves you thinking about the characters long after you're done reading. (Plus it makes me cry.)

5-0 out of 5 stars A wonderful book full of recognizable behaviors..
This is no beach book - it a well written book that pulls your emotions in many different directions.I am really dazzled by the skill with which Blake Fraina weaves this novel and it's characters. You will feel the pain of all the characters, yet retain sympathy for them as well. This is a stand out book that should not be missed. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Rooney's done it again!
This is one of the most interesting collections of stories I have read about gay male life in a long time. Most of these stories take place by the ocean in Provincetown and South Florida. While the ending of the SouthFlorida gunmen's story is hard to believe, you'll die laughing when youread, "The Shih Master's Thermos" with Christian and his antics. Christian is a true Provincetown character. There's even a story aboutMarilyn Monroe "The Last Performance" which has a real twist toit. Its hard to put this book down, so be prepared to want to force thru tothe end right away.I can't wait for Mr. Rooney's next collection. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars "AIDS HAS CHANGED ALL OF US"
How sad that this beautiful, important collection of stories is already out of print, having only been published in 1995.With such "important" writers as Susan Sontag and Paul Monette and David Leavitt as contributors, this compilation is one that must be read and savored. The title refers, obviously, to the way that AIDS has forced itself into the daily lives of all of us.Who among us does not know someone who is now ill or who has already died of this disease? In point of fact, several of the writers in this volume are dead. But the volume is not a polemic. It is a wonderful, moving, at times funny, entertaining collection. My personal favorite is "In The Gloaming" by a writer I had previously never encountered:Alice Elliott Dark. Write to Citadel Press and get this book re-printed.A portion of its sale is donated to AMFAR and a program to help writers with HIV/AIDS. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars a welcome addition to a vampire lover's bookshelf
Sons of Darkness is a titillating, entertaining volume for the cerebral sensualist. Both charming and naughty, each story is a guilty pleasure. Featuring some of my personal favorite vamp auteurs, such as Poppy Z. Brite (Lost Souls, Exquisite Corpse) and Nancy Kilpatrick (Power of the Blood trilogy), the words 'blood' and 'lust' could not be more at home together than in these pages.

4-0 out of 5 stars New British Gay Fiction--Branching Garden of Spiky Species
Skip the dubious-toned Introduction, where editor Hartnett brashly trashes establishment-gay writers, proudly promises us the mysterious moon of "new talent." Because despite this yattering, he largely does deliver.4-0 out of 5 stars New century, new writing
As Hartnett states in his introduction, he intended this collection to be edgy, atypical, far-reaching. And he's succeeded. The thirty-one stories collected here range in topics, styles, and impact, and all in all it's an excellent anthology showcasing both established and emerging talent from all over the United Kingdom, and including the full range of queer experiences. Nicholas Blincoe, Rupert Smith, Christopher Whyte, Peter Slater, Mike Parker, P-P Hartnett himself, Michael Arditti, and a host of others entertain the reader with stories of love, loss, humor, and sex. The best part of this anthology is it being an introduction to these authors many of whom I've never read. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars An engrossing andcomprehensive look at gay relationships
Jay Mandal's book of short stories, "The Loss of Innocence", covers a wide spectrum of gay life. Some are his stories are poignant or even tragic, whilst others are heart-warming and touching. As always, his ability to convey what is lost between the interstices of idle chatter is to the fore.
