5-0 out of 5 stars Towards the light
Lippincott's novella is a continuation of sorts of Virginia Woolf's"Mrs. Dalloway", except from the point of view from Mr Dalloway. The event in this book is the couple's anniversary, which corresponds witha solar eclipse. The author skilfully explores the nature of love, and thenature of women and men. Richard Dalloway adores his wife Clarissa, but healso loves Robert Davies. The three paths converge and come to a sort ofbeautiful moment, framed by the eclipse. It may be not quite as evocativeand potent as Cunningham's "The Hours" or Woolf's books, but thisbook is still exceptional and beautiful. A book to enjoy and revisit.

2-0 out of 5 stars Rather precious
Like Michael Cunningham's novel THE HOURS, this novel begins with an interesting premise.I think Mr. Lippincott is also right in saying thatWoolf left Richard Dalloway's character in MRS. DALLOWAY deliberatelyvague. For these and other reasons, I very much hoped to admire this book. Unfortunately, Lippincott's novel is not a great success.Although mostof the reviewers claim that his style is Woolfian and that Woolf would haveloved his book, I really think she would have found the writing ratheramateur and the psychological observations downright embarrassing.Theauthor's handling of Richard's supposed love for his now-deceased brotheris mawkish rather than moving; indeed, the author's push to explain allaspects and causes of Richard's desire gives us the very opposite ofWoolf's fascination with the mystery of desire, gay or straight.Insteadof her modernist enigmas, we have Lippincott's excessively repetitiouspop-psychological explanations for all motives. The descriptions of Londonlife also read as if they were written by a visitor lacking a sense of thecity's history. So, I'm afraid the reviewer for KIRKUS gets exactly rightthe author's strangely insistent asides, his clumsy narrative perspectives, the novel's rather weak conception . . .5-0 out of 5 stars Woolf would be proud
Mr. Dalloway exposes the protagonist in a delicate and subtle way, just as Mrs. Dalloway was exposed. We are privy to his most intimate thoughts, as well as to a secret about his life that not only makes sense but issomething I believe Woolf would have developed had she been so inclined. The story line is original, fresh, yet echoes the Woolfian tone so wellthat it often made me feel as though Virginia had come back, reincarted inLippincott's fingers, to add yet another chapter to her already magnificentbody of work.I was not only impressed by Mr. Dalloway, but enthralled. The writing, the story, the other characters--all were solidly developedand superb.BRAVO! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Must Read
For one who avoids poetry like the plague, "Arguing With the Troubadour" is a welcome invitation to a poetic landscape filled with emotional drama. Using a minimum of words, each a nugget of personal reality, kris t kahn illustrates a young life filled with sensual extremes. A hopeful voice out of the dark, arid desert of youth, he brings context to his being through vibrant verse with pieces that exude humor, rage, irony, and, ultimately, love. Definitely, a must read for anyone trying on young poets.

2-0 out of 5 stars I await what is more substantial.
Notable achievement for a first real collection but my overall view is that the work is self-serving, self-justifying and lacking in any of the real honesty its tone lays claim to. Many parts are clichd, the only crime in this being that the clichs do not even seem to connect with the writer on the level suggested, let alone a reader. I thought Kahn used too many words; conveyed an expectation of the reader to devour and accept rather than to read. The entire collection screams 'read me, analyze me!' but analysis proves disappointing. Not poor, but I definitely thought the work was 'trying to be' rather than just being. Perhaps he writes too close to home.

1-0 out of 5 stars Cliched with no music
The blurbery on this book is hilarious. The writing is abysmal & generic. In fact, it is so generic that it isn't even worth reviewing. But because of the pretentious blurbs, I had to. Poor line breaks (constant at breaks at 'ands' and 'withs' & 'thes') & cliched- this is typical college-aged rants with the occasional reference to "important" writers so that way the readers know how well read this 'poet' is & also to establish a connection between this doggerelist & a great poet when there isn't one. (Get all that?) Pretty 'deep' huh? Anyone giving this a positive review has to be a pal. Note how they say nothing specific. Now who was I reviewing? ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars I can prove it
I've now bought seven copies of this book to give to people. I've personally read it three times and find myself refering to it periodically during the course of normal conversation. Sure, people look at me a little strange as we drive down the road in their car and I say something like "Please drive. Please drive slowly." but I simply smile with a self knowing satisfaction of what I'll be getting them for their birthday. It's really a fine piece of work this book. A bargain at twice the price.

5-0 out of 5 stars For God's Sake...
...buy it already! And prepare yourself for that wonderful tickling sensation that is the stimulation of your grey matter, in a way you've not experienced before.Genius.

4-0 out of 5 stars Feng shui for the heart and mind
In this delightful debut, Dave Awl explores relationships, identity and creativity with a great mixture of sensitivity, lyricism, humour, honesty and surrealism. In pieces such as Bestiary, Talking to Myself, Talking to Myself: The Interview, Immense Buddha Under Fire, Points of Connection, The Idea of You and the deliciously mysterious What The Sea Means, the strangeness and poignancy of life is examined with a refreshing vividity of style and deprecation of self.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Nature lovers should love this book
What would a group of recently super-powered heroes do to help the planet they love? Why save a herd of Buffalo of course.I loved the story and the sense of oneness the author created with the pagan tribe and nature herself. The book was full of hope and the power of humanity to exact goodness when so many chose complacency. A simple story with a beautiful ending. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A sexual visionary
As a gay man who is not a regular reader of poetry, I find these poems to be both accessible and liberating.Joshua Van Abrahams' poems show an honesty and sexiness I've not found in any other gay media.Take that, "Queer as Folk."Joshua takes on the issues of sexual life, destroys the familiar systems of power, and resurrects himself within a new spiritual body. Both introspective and exhibitionistic, this book is filled with subtle beauty and raw, naked honesty.Joshua and his work have been a source of inspiration for my work as a performance artist and singer. ...
