A fine book by a young poet who went on to even better work
The editorial review is only half right about this book. Trinidad's poetry is, at this early point in his career, diaristic, in the "I did this, I did that" vein of Frank O'Hara or James Schuyler. And often beautifully so.

Readers are sure to indulge themselves into the pages of Anything But The Moon as the poetry's inclinations twist from notion to implication to statement. Beach Glass: At the edge of the hayfield/there is nothing left to say.//Stubble/like the tide at ebb/lingers at a line of clover the machinery/could not reach, or ignored/as superfluous,//blossoms of pink and white/like beach glass/ground in the wind.//The story here is only a remnant, an edge/you might follow for miles and/ get no closer to anything --/not the tangle of the grass, after-image/of the sea, or pale headland/of trees.//All afternoon/the fenceline of that loss./Those waves.

Evocative
Burt is 6th grader waking up to his sexuality at the same time his older brother is dying from leukemia.His brother works for their attorney father by serving subpoenas on people.Burt sometimes accompanies him. Bob falls in love with Marion Hirsch a kind of free spirit who cannotreturn his love.The novel follows a year using the title of a book ofpoems Burt receives as its theme.Aunt Ida reads the poems to Burt eveeryday.Slowly Burt begins to put the memories together.When he realizeshis brother is dying, he tries to hold on to sensations, descriptions,feelings.The novel ends suddenly.It is almost as if someone did notinclude a few more pages.This suddenness leaves the reader with a senseof unfinished business.This contrasts with the careful way Bernard Cooperhad been approaching this final scene. Yet the novel is full of memories ofthe people and friends Burt lives with and the seemingly mundane events oftheir lives.
