5-0 out of 5 stars Teachers College Record Online Review
This book, based on the author's doctoral research, is an attempt to present a discussion of political possibilities for creating safe spaces and equal treatment for gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgendered, intersexed, and queer/questioning students - GLBTIQ to use the author's accurate but unwieldy acronym. This book functions on several levels. First of all, as the title describes, it is an experiential and practical guide to the problematic and politicized situation when educators attempt to create schools not only free of anti-gay violence, but schools where GLBTIQ students are valued equally with heterosexual students. To do this, the book centers on a case study of a school system called the High Plains School District and its struggle to formally add gay and lesbian students to the district's non-discrimination policy. Based on this case study, the book also offers strategies for educators and local communities to learn how to become active and network for more protection for GLBTIQ students. The book also functions as a primer for related theories, terms, court decisions, and the general background of inclusion in schools.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Very interesting read.
"Wriothesley's Roses" central purpose is to discuss Henry Wriothesley, third Earl of Southampton, as The Rose of Shakespeare's sonnets. The author marshals much evidence, interpretation, and supposition (the latter being, perhaps, not such a solid thing, but still very interesting) to support his thesis. He makes a respectable case, and you probably will be pursuaded that The Rose is indeed Henry Wriothesley.I held back on the fifth star in rating this book because, frankly, the writing style was a bit dense. But overall, I recommend the book because it's an interesting topic and advances an interesting hypothesis.

5-0 out of 5 stars Green's Sleuthing Reveals much about Shakespeare
Martin Green's WRIOTHESLEY'S ROSES IN SHAKESPEARE'S SONNETS, POEMS AND PLAYS adds significantly to our information about Shakespeare, of whom few have been able to tell us very much. The book captures the social milieu ofthe times, mentioning almost everybody who was anybody. It focuses on thewell-educated, politically active, and sexually ambiguous coteriesurrounding the Earl of Essex and their influence on Shakespeare'sknowledge and concepts. Green's thesis is that the third Earl ofSouthampton, Henry Wriothesley (pronounced Rose-ly) was the "thou, myRose" to whom the sonnets were addressed, the inspirer ofShakespeare's red and white and Rose imagery. One cannot but be impressedby the amassed evidence, starting with the Wriothesly coat-of-arms and thearchitectural particulars of H.W.'s Titchfield home. For all who lovesleuthing, this book is a must. Stylistically a delight, partly because ofGreen's ready, wry humor, the book argues its case with the cogency of askillful lawyer, anticipating and covering all points of view. In hisinsightful interpretations of Shakespeare's writings, Green highlights thepuns and dark conceits that he says were there for artistic reasons and notout of legal necessity to avoid revelation of homosexual or sodomiticalcontent. The book concludes with a short, lyrical chapter describing aninitial meeting of Shakespeare and Henry Wriothesley, so beautiful that oneardently hopes it was so. Mr. Green is also author of THE LABYRINTH OFSHAKESPEARE's SONNETS, London 1974. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Vital element of Renaissance drama thoroughly investigated
Mary Bly, an Oxford-educated professor of Reniassance drama at New York's Fordham University, has produced in "Queer Virgins and Virgin Queens on the Early Modern Stage" a fantastic piece of scholarly investigation. This is not to say that the work is dry or unexciting at any point, though. She does a fascinating job of delving into the use of (bawdy) puns on the Reniassance stage. Her style of writing is vibrant and keeps the reader's attention throughout, and yet is endlessly informative. In the process of examining the puns, and the language of the time, she manages to give the reader a very clear sense of sixteenth/seventeenth century society. It is a brilliant piece of criticism and surely deserves a spot on the shelf right along with other literary critics of high standing. Absolutely indispensible for those interested in the subject matter. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A modern classic
"Stray Dog Story" starts Robert Chesley's career as a mature playwright.Subtitled "An Adventure in Ten Scenes," it develops as a series of picaresque episodes on New York's mean streets.Characters flood the play, with actors double-cast in the ten scenes.Four characters, however, provide continuity: Buddy, a dog transformed into a man at the wish of his master; Jon, killed immediately thereafter by gaybashers who leave Buddy unable to fend for himself; Brett, an upwardly-mobile gay man who picks Buddy up, tries and then fails to help him; and a Bag Lady, who appears in several scenes and shows Buddy kindness on Christmas Eve, just before his death, at which point he reunites with the spirit of Jon.Other characters include a "Fairy Dog Mother" who transforms Buddy into a man; a thief who steals Jon's money before Buddy realizes he will go hungry without it; Tom, a gay activist at a public protest who first befriends Buddy, then turns against him when Buddy howls like a dog; and Dondi, a transvestite prostitute who tries to help Buddy until policemen assault and arrest her.It is no surprise to see gaybashers, policemen and a thief victimize Buddy; however, it is hard to watch Brett abandoning Buddy on the street, and a gay rights demonstrator kicking Buddy as the group marches off.Chesley's skeptical view of supposed community comes clear in such acts of betrayal. In the last scene Brett leaves a warm restaurant with his latest trick, while Buddy hides behind garbage cans starving to death.Buddy's reunion with his dead lover is heartbreaking, simultaneously pathetic and beautiful.Buddy carries the soul theme in this play, and the inability of other characters to recognize his soul indicts their humanity while forcing audience members to confront their own capacity to reach out to a person in need.

2-0 out of 5 stars A Learned Gallimaufryof Psychoanalytic Scurrilousness
The author of this text has done his homework and seems to be adept with classical languages, postmodernism and psychoanalytic thought. Yet, there is just something disappointing about this work that purportedly advances our understanding of the role that the "good man" (vir bonus) plays in staging masculinity by means of elocutionary exercises. 5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing

5-0 out of 5 stars An eclectic look at the literary depiction of revenge.
In the space of just under 400 pages, Kerrigan manages to cover the themeof revenge through centuries of literary works. The range of his referencesis, as critic Frank Kermode said, "dazzling," but this does notdistract one from pondering his various points about revenge tragedy. Aboveall, the book is heuristic: it stimulates one to think about what revengehas meant throughout literary history and what it means today. ... Read more
