5-0 out of 5 stars What a rush
Rose of No Man's Land is this fabulous rush of book - full of energy and emotion and brilliance and GREAT writing. Wow. I have no idea how she keeps the pace so fast in a novel where nothing really melodramatic happens. I read that she does a lot of spoken word performances, so maybe that's where she tests out whether her audience is getting the rush or not.
5-0 out of 5 stars I knew she could do it!
The other Michelle Tea books I'd read were Passionate Mistakes and Valencia. Even though the writing was really good, the books weren't that enjoyable because they were just shapeless descriptions of the author's life. As I expected, when she finally wrote a fiction book it was amazing.
4-0 out of 5 stars A novel as beautiful, scary, and unpredictable as Rose herself
This novel happens over 24 hours, when 14-year-old Trisha meets the dangerous and unpredictable Rose, who is a year older.More serious & poetic than C.D. Payne's 'Youth in Revolt;' not as bleak as Lynda Barry's 'Cruddy,' 'Rose of No Man's Land' is another contemporary coming-of-age story, beautifully written with candy-wrapped gems of observation. For the cautious Trisha, it's like having Courtney Love as a best friend for one day.I wished I knew what happened over the next week, for example, but we won't hear what happens afterwards unless Tea writes a sequel.[But what's with the cover photograph? The willowy model has nothing at all to do with the story, which would have been better done by one of Francesca Lia Block's illustrators.] ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Must Read!!!!!
An absolutely wonderful book. Brings Uncle Sean, Lance, and All Over Him together into one volume. Donaghe's interludes introducing and concluding each work ties everything together masterfully and is an added bonus readers won't get when reading the three works individually. The author makes you almost believe you're reading Will Barnett's biography/autibiography and not a work of fiction.

5-0 out of 5 stars tragedy of a drifter
A book of unreciprocated feelings, and longings amplified by withdrawel and junk sickness. This is a much more intimate and personal look into the life of William Burroughs than his other stuff. It takes place after he accidentally killed his wife, and he is sobering up and facing all of the demons and guilt previously dulled by the drugs.
4-0 out of 5 stars Drunks and lust
What makes this novel so affecting, when it is, is due to the workmanlike approach of the writing -- it's very simple and blunt, but not boorish: there's a well of emotion running through the words, and some of the lines ("He felt a deep hurt, as though he were bleeding inside. Tears ran down his face.") are piercing. The novel reads like a druggy travelogue into Mexico; we get this dusty sense ofwatering holes, where our main character lusts after boys in his incompetent way, and formulates theories on how to acquire a rare drug. He's a crotchety old bugger, full of useless information, in love with Allerton, a boy more beautiful and refined than he, who allows himself to be bought; out of loneliness or indifference, it's not clear. (You understand why Allen Ginsberg appreciates the novel so much.)
4-0 out of 5 stars An enjoyable, insightful read.
Queeris an unfinished novel set in Mexico City in the late 1940s, where "Lee" (Burrough's surrogate) is trying to "kick the Chinaman all the way out". In the introduction, Burroughs, tries to explain his emotional state:

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book But Sad
This is an awesome book.I love to read and at this point, I have read so much - I am a hard to please reader. The prose is simple, yet it will grab and hold your attention. In fact, before I comment on the story, let me say that if you are an aspiring writer - this is a good book to read just to see what simple, yet very engaging prose looks like.I don't care what kind of writer you are, if you have to communicate anything to anyone in "words," you will benefit from reading this.
5-0 out of 5 stars Loyal to the Bone
In this powerful book of suffering, strength, and grace, family love provides all of the above.

I have a confession - I have not actually read the book yet, merely heard Prof. Doniger present the topic at Radcliffe. But if it's anything like her other ones, I expect an open, intriguing, and profound look at people pretending to be people pretending to be who they are.(those are her words, not mine!)

4-0 out of 5 stars Got you back
A first-person account of Canada's most (in)famous barhopping ...1-0 out of 5 stars Sort of mediocre
Buddy Cole is much more appealing on stage than in the written word. Some funny gay bits, and interesting Toronto references if you should ever go there. Save the money to go see KITH's latest tour when it comes near you (esp. for the sarcastic 9/11 references). What is holding Scott (and KITH) back from really cutting sketches, huh? What about Canada's loony PC censorship, academic free-speech harrassment, massive immigration problems, and the fact that salaries are 1/2 to 2/3 of US?Look to Python and Benny Hill for examples ..

5-0 out of 5 stars Buddy is Brilliant

5-0 out of 5 stars Mary Ann Singleton - the heroine who betrayed Barbery Lane
Mary Ann Singleton first saw San Francisco at 25, everyone fell in love with the midwest transplant, but then when fame and ambition made her betray those closest to her ... she ran to New York and away from it all. It was characteristic of the ultimate lesson of the 80's. While the Tales of the City characters galavanted around in adventure during the 1970's ... the 80's greed and ambition transformed TV star Mary Ann into a cruel yuppie. Ending the saga ... culiminating in the 1989 San Francisco earthquake and Mary Ann abandoning all those who supported her throughout the years. Tales began and ended with Mary Ann ... and it was all just bittersweet.

5-0 out of 5 stars Not a fairytale endingjust painfully realistic
The residents of 28 Barbary Lane first came into my life in 1991 and they've remained firmly amongst my favourite literary characters of all time. Having read several reviews of "Sure of You" expressing feelings of disappointment and betrayal, I felt I had to chip in with my "twopenny" worth.

5-0 out of 5 stars Meet the "Bad" Girl on the "Good" Side of the Law
When I first picked up this book and realized the main character is named "Tori Hunter," I was a little concerned. You see, I live in Minnesota and one of my favorite players on the Minnesota Twins baseball team is outfielder Torii Hunter.Let me put your fears to rest... Tori in the book is NOTHING like Torii on the field... She's much, much more intriguing.

5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing
I've been reading this series periodically catching up with the collections here and there, but it didn't really hit me until this collection just how great this series is.The art work, pacing of the panels, the whole thing with David, his visions of his sister, those first two pencil drawings of Francine in the cherry pajamas and of course the humor ("I want to have a baby, your baby") all just flows together. It's a shame its soon to be coming to a close when it appears Mr. Moore has perfected everything that's great about his comic. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Another great addition to the collection
My only complaint is that the books don't come out more often! Other than that, Bechdel's humorous social commentary is as fresh as ever. I've been a fan for over 15 years and am always impatient for the next book to come out. Sure, I can go online and read the strip there, but it seems more gratifying to me to read them all at once in book form.

5-0 out of 5 stars Smart, edgy, controversial...and never dull
I had never heard of Alison Bechdel or Dykes to Watch Out For until I was fortunate enough to hear her speak at a diversity conference I attended. She was witty and poignant and I picked up this book and bought it. So I started at the end of a series which I have now gone back and read from the beginning and I love it! This particular book was a great collection (obviously enough to hook me in) that made me laugh, think, and reflected moments in my own life, despite my being heterosexual. What I love about her characters is they are real, smart, interesting women. What I hope for is the day when they are present in the comic pages of national newspapers rather than just liberal lesser known publications. One day we won't have to have a special Lesbian/Gay genre...it will just be incorporated into mainstream media the way the heterosexual experience is today. Support such a world by investing in her work and supporting others like her. Open your mind to new experiences and laugh a little in the process.

5-0 out of 5 stars I love this strip!
This is one of my favorite comics.I love Alison Bechdel!I have all of the books, and I have been a fan for about 8 years. She's always so funny and insightful. It's like reading a soap opera.I can hardly wait for each installment. You really get to know and love all of the characters, and it's hard not to get emotional over the story lines.Everyone should read all of her books. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars What a Great Read
I just finished reading this book and I gotta say, I loved every single bit of it. The Characters were very well developed. I felt as though I was right there in the mix feeling what the characters went through and salavating over the character of Rod. I couldn't help but fall in love with Bart. I also found myself indentifying at times with what these men went through. I give this book a huge thumbs up. I had a hard time putting it down.

1-0 out of 5 stars The Real Trick is getting through this book!
This is one of the worst books I have ever read. This was my first exposure to Ben Tyler, and it will be my last.Poorly written and poorly edited.4-0 out of 5 stars Making It in Hollywood!
Novels about making it in Hollywood are nothing new.Hollywood has a reputation where everyone uses everyone to get what they want as fast as they can."Tricks of the Trade" is such a novel but there's a lot more plot here, and this book is a fast, easy read full of vivid characters who know a little about back stabbing and getting their own way. There's Bart Cain, the main character, who is a publicity writer for Sterling Studios; Shari Draper, Bart's homophobic boss; Rod Dominguez, the hot Latino stud who hustles by night and writes so called brilliant scripts by day; and Jim Fallon, the All-American sit-com star whose career is in the dumps.Bart meets Rod in a chat room, and the two get together for some action.Soon Bart is instantly hooked on Rod, and after Rod talks Bart into getting his script read by the studio, he drops him like a ton of lead.Into the picture steps, Jim Fallon, who thinks Rod's script is his answer to his sagging career. This story, with more twists than you can imagine, leaves you exhausted by the end of the book, trying to keep up with it all.The fun is in seeing just how far each of these characters will go to get ahead. You will find yourself racing toward the finish line to see who comes out the winner in this fun, but busy novel. It's an enjoyable read that's well worth the time.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Bittersweet smells like Roses!
I bought Bittersweet because I love Barr's style of writing, and I was waiting for the next mystery.I was wondering how I would like Ms. Barr's writing a different style than her Anna Pigeon mysteries.
5-0 out of 5 stars Bittersweet Captures Feelings and History
As a long-term fan of Barr's Anna Pigeon mysteries, I was delighted to find this departure equally as entertaining, if not more so.She manages to capture both the time and setting down to the most minute details and moves us in to live in the characters' lives. It is somewhat reminiscent of the historical parts of her book Flashback, but with more detail. It also presents a subject I had never read or thought about before, how gay women were treated in the 19th Century.Fascinating book.

1-0 out of 5 stars HUH? Please....
Guess I was expecting toomuch. I've enjoyed other Nevada Barr works but this one is a stinker. I only regret the time I lost trudging through it. I was sure it was going to get better...It didn't.I was loathe to give it one star. Yuck. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent human story
I decided to take a chance on this book and I was not disappointed. It was incredible in a heartbreaking, eye puffing, noise running sort of way. Dayne Avery certainly did a good job of depicting a story that was both believable and powerful that it had me by the first chapter. I read this in one sitting because I could not put it down and the only time I did was when I had to eat. That was how captivating it was.

5-0 out of 5 stars A POWERFUL, REDEMPTVE STORY
Wow, what a book!Through all the craziness, Goodman elicits honest emoton from all his characters and writes with rich detail that won't let you put ths book down.Chld Of My Right Hand is an unforgettable modern tale of an American Family -gay son, gay father, cheating husband, bigots, hate crimes, jocks, drama, small town life, gay love, straight love - it's all mixed into this awesome book.
5-0 out of 5 stars Some enchanted evening...
This is the first Amazon review I've ever written but this novel moved me so much that I had to.
4-0 out of 5 stars Honest
Honest is the best way to describe "Child of My Right Hand", written by my friend's father. Candid, and honest, this novel seeks to portray the complicated relationship between straight parent and gay child from all angles - mother, father, and son. But it does much more than that: it explores the complexities of our unfaithful, scatterbrained human hearts, and shows off Eric Goodman's (whom I know as "Lizzie's" Dad's) intelligent - often shocking - wit.

4-0 out of 5 stars Not just a Summer Beach Read!
When I ordered this and began reading it, I thought it was going to be one of those good summer reads -- the kind you can read while cruising the beach and put down and pick up at will. And believe me there is nothing wrong with a good summer read, however, this book, "Flying With Angels" is much more than that.It is well plotted with very interesting characters throughout. The author cleverly takes several of the antagonists and gives them enough humanity to make them interesting AND likeable, then they are given the fatal flaw that makes them do things that screw up the lives of those around them.I really enjoyed "Flying With Angels" and recommend it to anyone who wants a good read (with just enough sexy scenes to keep it "interesting")I look forward to more books by B.B. Parker and especially I'd like a part two of this one.

5-0 out of 5 stars Flying with Angels is a page turner!
I read this book and was hooked right away. I loved the authors' unique way of telling the story. I found b.b. parker's style of writing very refreshing and was immediately drawn into the characters lives. I couldn't put it down, I had to keep turning the page to find out what was going to happen next. I think the author was brilliant, this was his first book, I loved it and he so left me wanting more!

4-0 out of 5 stars I'm addicted ... more please, Mr. Parker !
15 minutes into the book left me unwilling to put it aside until finished.I eagerly relived together with so many recognizable friends the years of facing often thorny gay issues, sad and happy times.Andy & Rick's failing relationship, Andy's easily recognized professional trials, Jerry's delightfully "over-the-top" yet "knowing" insights, drew me deeper into pages of sheer reading enjoyment.Jerry and Tony, I "remember you" so well, another place, another time. As a romanatic I was fulfilled, yet left wanting more. The steady moving (in every sense of the word) pace and picture-perfect descriptions of people and places never disappointed. Has become great repeat reading. Thank you, Thank you, bb parker ... Read more
