5-0 out of 5 stars ON BEING NORMAL
This review is primarily an endorsement of Anna Otto's December 5, 2000 review of this book. I don't think her review could be improved upon except perhaps for one quote from Christopher Isherwood's 'Mr. Lancaster' which holds forth the promise of universality: "What I am has refashioned itself throughout the days and years, and until now almost all that remains constant is the mere awareness of being conscious. And that consciousness belongs to everybody; it isn't a particular person." Mr. Lancaster's statement is surely a promise to gay people of all ages, and to the friends and parents of gays.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent collection
A versatile and engaging anthology of stories about gay relationships. Some author names included here will surprise you (Henry James? but his "Pupil" is one of the most amusing and engaging stories), others will delight you (W. Burroughs' "Wild Boys."). Edmund White, a prominent gay writer, thankfully included his own short story, "Skinner Alive," into this collection, and I fell in love with his lyrical style. He displays great taste in editing this collection, and provides an insightful foreword. Every story here brings an interesting nuance to the genre, and each one holds surprises for the reader. This isn't just a book for the collection of short gay and lesbian fiction... this is a book of great short fiction - no more definition needed. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars More Western than I imagined
More western in terms of the books layout and in terms of the focus on the sex over the plot or characters.I frankly didn't have a problem with the sexual focus but others might. There are five stories in this book but I think the best two are "The Stradivarious" and "Sex Idol" where the drawing, the plot, and the characters were more complexed.I'm happy I got it but if you are expecting to not see sex (why are you looking for yaoi then?) or you want very little sex and great masterpieces of art, this isn't for you.If you just like the idea and the image of beautiful young men together, this might be something for you.

2-0 out of 5 stars i dont recomend it
Some the the stories were interesting, I'll give it that, but the illustrations were really, really bad. It was a extremely watered down version of yoai hentai. It barely deserved the 'mature readers only' rating that it had. The sci-fi stories was the best but the artists' lack of skill completely ruined the story for me. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Gotta love a Jock!
Johanna Marshall finally caves in and goes to watch her friends play in a softball tournament. Her friends have brought in a ringer, which is ringing all of Johanna's bells.
2-0 out of 5 stars Boring!
Romantic story of how Jo hesitates to get into a relationship with a steamy young woman whose feelings for her are more than Jo can manage. I found the story a little slow and "going around in circles": repetitions of how Jo was hurt by her ex Nancy, how she is lonely, has very few friends, and keeps rejecting a persistent Kelly. Not the best lesbian love story out there.
4-0 out of 5 stars Clearly Hill's First Effort
Johanna was betrayed by her lover three years before this story begins. She has strenously guarded her heart since then - telling herself that she was content, even happy. Then, one summer night, she met and fell for Kelly only to be told that Kelly is a womanizer much like the woman who hurt her so badly.

5-0 out of 5 stars Overwhelming beauty
Everyone I know loves this book. The beauty contained in it is just overwhelming, particularly the section "Brian & Nhat."Anyone who looks at the loving photographs of these two striking young men will see a beauty that is really impossible to put into words -- unless you happen to be a very gifted poet! But could I try? Slender, muscular torsos : beautiful eyes : boyish innocence on one page & crushing masculine beauty on the next : lovely, lovely smiles : all the beauty that kisses the world of the young and the adolescent, and then too quickly vanishes.

5-0 out of 5 stars Coming Out in 1969
The Price of Salt changed my life. I used to drive an ice cream truck in Long Beach CA and would stop by the pier at a used book store to search the racks of pulp fiction for anything that had a modicum of same sex content.
4-0 out of 5 stars One of this writers best efforts.
In 1952 Patricia Highsmith composed this personal and revelatory classic.Harper & Bros, publisher of Highsmith's "Strangers on a Train," refused to issue this novel due to its controversial subject matter. The powers that be convinced Highmsith that publishing under her own name would adversely impact her career the way Gore Vidal's had initially been by "The City and the Pillar." The Naiad Press out of Tallahassee, Florida published this volume under the pseudonym Claire Morgan.Ironically, "The Price of Salt" became one of this author's best sellers. All that seems so long ago - another lifetime.Indeed, it's hard to conceive of Michael Cunningham or Tony Kushner having to contend with such issues. So, now that all of the controversy has abated we can judge this novel on it's own merits, and the verdict is a happy one."The Price of Salt" is one of Highsmith's best efforts. This novel works on a number of levels. It is both a "coming out" story and a "love" story, with a bit of the author's trademark suspense thrown in for good measure. The story has an emotional honesty and autobigraphical sensibility; qaulities that are noticeably absent from much of her other work.I found myself pulling for Carol and Therese, and found the development of their relationship to be natural and true to life. The "happy ending" is achieved in an uncompromising fashion that doesn't feel false or contrived.I am reminded of a Stephen Sondheim lyric: "wishes come true, not free."These characters paid a price for their happiness - it wasn't free. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Impressive debut
L.A. Heat is the kind of book that makes you wonder how this could be a debut novel. This suspenseful, carefully-plotted mystery has all the earmarks of some of the best (and more seasoned) mystery pros in the business. Its setting is realistic and at times seamy, its characters sympathetic and real, its attention to detail (especially police procedure) astonishing, and its pacing deft...definitely in the category of "can't put down." I look forward to more from P.A. Brown. She's a winner.

5-0 out of 5 stars Page turner
This is by no means one of the "best written" books I've read but it's been a long time since I read one I had such a difficult time putting down.Highly recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic first novel is a well-written, engaging, realistic gem!
David Laine is a 37 year old veteran Los Angeles police detective, who first meets Chris Bellamere, a gay partyboy in his early 20's with a good job as a computer systems professional, as an investigative lead (and possible suspect) in an ongoing series of rapes, maiming and subsequent murders of young gay men. While David's instincts tell him that Chris isn't the killer (much to the frustration of David's detective partner, Martinez, who didn't hide his resentment of gays), Chris' "gaydar" tells him that David's interest in him isn't entirely professional. Yet, there seems to be some connection, as most of the victims frequented the same gay cruise bar that Chris did, and he had been seen with them by the bartender.

5-0 out of 5 stars Poetic and Encouraging
I can't say that I have found a novel so dreamy and awake as this one. Written clearly, yet distinct, Mr.Grimsley found a way to actually take love and place it on a planet, extremley far away, but at arm's reach.
4-0 out of 5 stars gripping and heart-wrenching
In "Dream Boy" Jim Grimsley once again shows his prowess as an evocative word-artist. This gripping tale of a teen striving to overcome his abusive home life takes us into the farthest reaches of the human psyche and leaves us breathless at the end. At times his writing is poetic, at times strangely dreamlike. Always this book is a great study for those looking for ways to make every word of a story count.
5-0 out of 5 stars AMAZING
I read this book as one of the first after "coming out" and starting to explore the world of gay authors and subject matter.I have given this book to everyone I know and not one has been able to say anything but how moving and well done this book is.I HIGHLY recommend it.Far above most novels of this ilk. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars hot!
I don't leave many reviews but as a follow-up to a comment made below.... Tempestuous is also m/m.Both books are incredibly hot!Actually, Morgan's "Torrid" was the first strickly m/m I'd read and I found it, interestingly enough, a major turn on!I'm hoping she sets another story with these two guys... especially after the closing pages!Get the book and you'll know what I mean.:)If you like hot erotica, no matter what the mixture, Morgan's books are perfect. The girl has some serious imagination!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars ACK!I LOVE THIS...MORE, MORE!!!
I'm not going into a long review, but suffice to say, the action was hot, the romance was smooth, and the protagonists were wonderful! I loved both the main characters and couldn't choose a favorite. If you like yaoi/shonen-ai, your will LOVE this! Write more, more, more, Morgan!

5-0 out of 5 stars Brave new world for me
I don't normally read manga or yaoi or Shounen-ai... in fact, I had to look up what most of those words mean! I don't even read m/m stories very often. However I met Morgan Hawke at the RTCon in Daytona Beach this year and adored her, her open and free spirit and decided to take a step outside my comfort zone and read "Torrid." I stayed up until 2 a.m. reading it.I found it erotic, charming, and a VERY well named little book. Very hot, HOT, hot m/m with a delicious sense of humor. The characters were interesting and well formed, with not too much given to us too soon, lots of varied sex without getting too clinical (not easy with two guys).

5-0 out of 5 stars Mystery! Suspense!
Free-lance photographer, Kate Ryan is asked by friends to investigate a series of "incidents" at the home of their friend, Dr. Margaret "Maggie" Winfield. An investigation that Kate hesitates to undertake for reasons that still wound her soul.Nevertheless, she agrees to help only to find that Maggie doesn't want it. Why?
5-0 out of 5 stars My First of Many Reviews
I just finished "She Waits" by Kate Sweeney, and I want to let one and all know what a great book this is.Since my first Nancy Drew at nine years old, I have loved reading and this book is a perfect example of why.The sometimes clumsy but always engaging Kate Ryan is now one of my favorite heroines, transportingme into the midst of her adventures with great humor, leading the pack from somewhere in the middle, and solving other people's problems while doing her best to face her own.The author has surrounded her with family and friends who are so well written you feel as if you've known them all your life. Add the clever plot, complete with twists and surprises and just a hint of romance (which I am eager to see develop in the series), and you have one of the most entertaining books I've read in some time. This first-time out for author Kate Sweeney couldn't be more fun and enjoyable and I expect the rest of the series will be more of the same.

4-0 out of 5 stars The klutzy detective
Kate Sweeney introduces a new mystery series with her first book She Waits. Her heroine Kate Ryan is a klutz. She doesn't mean to be, but Kate can't seem to do much without having an accident of some sort.Kate was once a private investigator, but, after a horrible incident that is never fully explained, she gave up that occupation to become a very successful wildlife photographer. When the book opens, she is on her way to Galena, Ill., to spend a peaceful weekend with her sister. While she is in the area, some friends have asked her to visit a friend of theirs who is having some problems.Maggie Winfield has had some strange things happen to her and her friends are hoping that Kate can help her figure out what is going on.Maggie doesn't want anyone else to help her, especially Kate after the way they meet.Kate is driving down the road and nearly hits Maggie as she crosses the road at a high rate of speed on her horse. As the mystery unfolds it is clear that Maggie's rather eccentric family is hiding secrets and that these secrets are related to what is happening to Maggie. There is a string of unusual deaths, including Maggie's parents and a long time family employee.Maggie is quite wealthy and her death would make someone very rich. Then there's the ex-girlfriend Allison who seems to be tied into everything.Kate has more clues than she knows what to do with and they don't seem to fit together.

4-0 out of 5 stars A yummy title!
"The Art of Loving" is by the famous author Eiki Eiki and has only 2 volumes.
5-0 out of 5 stars Exceptional!
This is not your typical "happy feel" Yaoi. The story is about obsession and it is dark, poignant and a trifle disturbing. As the story progresses, one has the impression the 2 protagonists are spiraling towards an abyss from which they may not recover. It is suppose to be a 2 volumes story but after surfing Junemanga.com (DMP new Yaoi website) we may not see the 2nd volume this year. Frustrating as Volume 1 does end with a cliff hanger. The story starts really well, introducing us to the intriguing relationship between Yutaka and Tohno. From there we have flashbacks as to how it all started from the time both are just school mates. The plot is fast paced and keeps me turning the pages until the cliff hanger at the end. Both boys are appealing characters but not everyone may like Yutaka, the darker character. Eiki Eiki is one talented mangaka and I appreciate her non adherence to the usual stereotype Yaoi. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Potential is AMAZING!!
This title couldn't have portrayed my own life in a more realistic fashion. Ariel Schrag is an absolute genius!

5-0 out of 5 stars Funny and honest without being sentimental
Ariel's work is beautiful and compelling. Her high school coming-of-age story is so personal, so awkward, so terrible, and still so delirious with potential... you'll recognize it immediately.Five stars.

1-0 out of 5 stars mediocre book written at other people's expense
Having gone to high school with Ariel, and personally knowing a lot of people in her books, I feel that they really disrespect the privacy of the parties involved. It really leaves a bad taste in my mouth. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing Story and very sad! Loved it!!!!
Author J.M. Rusin, When I started to read the book, I couldnt put it down, until I was finished it and it make me cry. I could not believe how peoples can be so rude. And what you when though, and most of alls it was not your fault. I really loved this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars I am a gay husband
I am a gay married man who is at the crossroads of his life. After 14 years of living with a woman who is loving, kind, and understanding, I have decided to make the most difficult decision in my life to date--namely, be honest with her. After reading the book "Straight Wives, Shattered Lives," by Bonnie Kaye,I realize that the longer I withhold this truth from her, the more damage I am doing to her life. When I read some of the stories of these women in the book, I was faced with the reality of what I am doing to my own wife. I have fought these feelings of male attractions for many years. I wanted to be the husband my wife needs. I never meant to hurt her. I take my marriage vows very seriously. I married her because I was in love with her, and I still love her so much. But now I realize that I can never love her in the way she deserves to be loved--totally and completely. I know this because I have read the book "Forbidden Love With a Married Man: Email Diaries" by Dennis Schleicher. In his story, I saw the kind of relationship that I too desire with someone of the same sex.Between these two books, I realized I had to be honest with myself before I could be honest with my wife. I know my life will never be the same after I reveal this news, but I don't want to keep hiding behind a lie. Wish me luck.

5-0 out of 5 stars Poignant, Moving, Truthful...
This memoir was an amazing look into the story of the author and his gay and married boyfriend. Mind you, he's married to a woman...

5-0 out of 5 stars top-notch collection of short stories
Bestselling Irish native Emma Donoghue (SLAMMERKIN) delivers a top-notch collection of 19 short stories featuring a variety of everyday characters caught in the middle of the unexpected. On the surface, each offering is grouped according to one of five themes: Babies, Domesticity, Strangers, Desire, and Death. On a deeper level, these broadly defined boundaries intersect throughout many of the stories, as they often do in reality, creating a series of snapshots that are both unique and true to life.
4-0 out of 5 stars "Perhaps discretion was the better part of motherhood, after all."

2-0 out of 5 stars Not Up To Scratch...
For years, I have been a faithful reader of Zubro's Tom & Scott mysteries (and still am!), but sadly must agree with the previous reviewer that this one was just not one of Zubro's best. While I do love horror films & have nothing against gore, the level of violence in the novel seemed very out of place and overly jarring for a T & S mystery story (especially when the cute cover makes this look like it's going to be a fun romp). It was difficult to tell one character from another and the storyline was very difficult to follow. Usually character & story development are flushed out very well by Zubro, but, unfortunately, it just seems jumbled & messy in this one. Even the normally enjoyable stabs at humor T & S make at each other seem out of place in this novel with all the grisly killing going on.
3-0 out of 5 stars Too brutal for a mystery!
I have been a faithful follower of Tom & Scott series for years.
4-0 out of 5 stars Nail-biting suspense, but a bit too far-fetched for me.
Scott Carpenter, the openly-gay former baseball star, along with his longtime high school teacher spouse Tom Mason, are vacationing the week after Christmas on the remote Aegean island of Korkasi, site of a little known resort catering to rich gay men.Their "r&r" is broken permanently when, shortly after finding the resort manager shot dead in their room, an explosion in the resort's main building results in several other deaths, at a time when all communication is cut off from the main world due to a massive lightning storm.Tom and Scott try to organize the survivors they find to search the outlying villas, to inform others what happened and perhaps get some clues as to the cause of the explosion, but are soon frustrated by the selfishness and lackadasical attitude of their fellow guests. And, as other shooting victims are found, it becomes apparent that a dangerous killer is at large, perhaps one of their own, putting them all in danger, in a complex tale of greed, stolen art treasures and false identities.
