5-0 out of 5 stars I LOVE THIS BOOK!
I LOVE "The Fame Game" - anyone who hasn't read it yet is missing out on the best read in years. I literally could not put it down. All that murder, sex and filth - and I couldn't wait to see what was waiting on page TWO!A gripping, fascinating masterpiece!

5-0 out of 5 stars The Fame Game - Brilliant and Intense
WOW!I just finished reading THE FAME GAME, I couldn't put it down and polished if off in 2 days, which was bitter sweet as I was kinda sad I finished the book because I was enjoying it so much.I couldn't help having a knot in my stomach while reading it though, because the emotion felt so real and so very raw it was painful, and I kept thinking the author must have experienced that kind of hurt at times to be able to capture that emotion so eloquently! It made my heart ache for him.My husband insists that's just because Casillo is soooo good an author that he manages to capture the depth of emotions.I know we all face heartache of varying degrees throughout our lives and all have a mask we show the world to cover our insecurities, but this book is intense.Brilliant and Intense.I loved it, a superb story. What an awesome movie that would make!!Casillo is definetely my new favorite author and I will be anxiously waiting to see what he comes up with next!

5-0 out of 5 stars DIE, BITCH, DIE!
For two New Yorkers, Mikki Britten and Mario DeMarco, whose only assets are youth, beauty and sexual prowess, the prospect of growing old and remaining obscure is a fate worse than death. When Mikki's only chance at fame is snatched away by Carla, her supposed friend and the nondescript daughter of Hollywood's top movie producer, Mikki and Mario plot the ultimate revenge. As the book jacket states, "the reward for one is the ultimate: fame. The penalty for another: obscurity. The price for the last, death."

3-0 out of 5 stars The "Problem" with Conceptual Schemes, New and Old
The August 11, 1999 "a reader" comments about Sedgwick's prose is especially valuable. The tendency to "abuse" language, in J. L. Austin's famous phrase, seems pronounced in Francophile and postmodernist writings, as if obscuritanism is a measure of profundity rather than a measure of obscuritanism. Several critics have justly claimed that unintelligibile writing and ideation only expose unintelligibility.
1-0 out of 5 stars Deep wading
Ugh, a tough, tough book to read.I found myself really bogged down by this book and looked more forward just to getting through it than actually getting anything out of it.Sedgewick's style is definately not for me, but if you can get past the thick writing style you may be able to glean some interesting points from it.

5-0 out of 5 stars ...Theory should always be so good
According to the writer Avital Ronell, in his youth Kant wanted to be a poet.Fortunately for us, perhaps, he turned to philosophy instead.Through this turn Kant ended up setting the standard towards which most academics currently strive: a zero-degree style (which Lyotard both attempts to mime and identifies as naive in the preface to The Differend). What this does, essentially, is provide the rather stupid (and perpetually misrecognized) effect that an author is objective, sound, and important. Most of the time, authors are none of these.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Curious????
I loved this book and have read it many times over the years. It is pretty fast paced, but what the heck at least there was no U-Haul involved.
4-0 out of 5 stars Endlessly Re-readable
Curious Wine was part of the beginning of my lesbian book collection (having come out in the mid-80's). It's still one of my favorite lesbian romances after all these years. I am not one to re-read books much, but I do have a short list of select lesbian novels that I tend to re-read every 1-2 years as sort of my "lezzie break" from reading everything else that I do, the majority of which is written by and about straight people. Curious Wine is right smack at the top of that list. (Along with one of Forrest's other novels, Emergence of Green.)
5-0 out of 5 stars The FIRST Classic Lesbian Love Story with a Happy Ending!!
When I was questioning my sexuality (about being a lesbian) in the late 1980's, I was hungry for a book that would give me a positive outlook on being a lesbian. Unfortunately I didn't find or read any sexy, enlightening, and romantic lesbian novels until I stumbled upon 'Curious Wine' by Katherine Forrest. I read this book in a couple of hours and proceeded to read it at least another 50 times (this is no exaggeration.)I love this book so much, I own 4 copies. Also, in 2006 I travelled to Australia and New Zealand with a copy of this book in my luggage (I am NOT kidding!)

5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing Book
It seems that a lot of people have already summarized the book, so I wont bother doing that again. All I will say is that it is an absolutely amazing book. After stumbling across many cheesy GLBT books it was very refreshing to pick up a book and have it feel so real. It's a book that I think a lot of people can relate to, especially if you have ever experienced being an outcast. It is defenitely worth a read. I loved it.

4-0 out of 5 stars gender & class.
This book was given to me by a friend - a friend who also identified as stone butch, and who now IDs as trans. At the time, many years ago, it was really just a book that was supposed to give me an idea of what her life was like. Although I don't think the writing is all it could be - Les Feinberg is better at speeches and non-fiction prose, in my humble opinion - the impact this book had on my life can't be underestimated. It's one of the only books written not just by a lesbian and butch, but also by someone who lived a working-class life. As a result, so much of the book deals with what I'd call the real world: working in a blue-collar industry, dating women, dealing with family estrangement but also innate homophobia. The one scene that really hangs in my memory is one where the narrator has started taking T and is passing for male, and dating a woman who is straight. At some point, the woman says something deeply homophobic, and the convolutions of thought that go on in the narrator's head at that time are enlightening. S/he wonders exactly what would happen to hir if that same woman were to really what/who the narrator really was; the fear in that scene is palpable. And practical. And realistic.

5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing book about fight for Gay and Lesbian rights
Very important book. Taking a course in Lesbian Literature, I have to say it's been a humble experience. There are so many terms and stuff to learn that a lot of the evil things done to Lesbians and Gays happen. It just goes to show you despite the b.s. about this being a free country you are always attacked for being different. This book written by Leslie Fienberg follows the story of Jesse Goldberg a lesbian coming to grips about her sexuality. Unfortunately for her she is living in 50's in a very politically correct and paranoid time in the USA. She is attacked, raped her and beat upon by cops and other heterosexuals for being a lesbian. Her world stars to change when she meets others like her and learns the "Butch" lifestyle. Feinberg does a great job in showing and exploring different relationship among the gay community while showing how discriminatory the straight community.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good in its genre
Brian Malloy's book "The Year of Ice" seems just another typical high school coming-out novel. Fun to read in the train or on the beach, perhaps, but not really worthwhile from any more critical point of view. However, this appearance is deceptive. Though the tone is generally quite superficial, owing to the apparently not too bright teenage protagonists' point of view, the plot is certainly not and leaves the reader excited to the end.
2-0 out of 5 stars Could have been better...
This book has a lot going for it - coming out during the pre-internet age, suicide and infidelity - however, what bogs it down for me is the main character, Kevin Doyle.
5-0 out of 5 stars Ice Sharp, Snow Soft
This is a beautifully written work that welcomes and stands up to a second reading. Like Annie Proulx's Brokeback Mountain, it's about about being gay but it's in a genuinely human context... in fact the hero's anguish over his mother's death and the evolution of his feelings toward his father are, actually, as affecting and intense. Like many young men I've known, this is a kid who can irritate the hell out of you and yet you can't help liking him.

5-0 out of 5 stars At Home on the Raunch
From the 1860's to present day, Cowboys covers a wide variety of western themed men and their sexual doins' You'll like these guys, everyone from an Hawaiian cowboy to a graphics designer is vibrant and no two stories are even remotely similar save many of them take place in the West. A strength of this book is that it introduces men discovering their sexuality in a time when what they want to do just isn't, publicly, acknowledged. A sheriff, a country doctor, a drifter all come to terms with what they want and, always, get it. There is a sentimental undercurrent to many of these men: The loneliness of isolation makes them as interested in the "buddy" aspect of being with another man as the sex. You want to pull up a chair, sit by a pot bellied stove and get acquainted. You'll like the guy next to you and pull for his happiness and sexual fulfillment. And, yes, the sex is great. The various authors approach to sex is a function of the story and not the focus. It's the guys in the ten gallon hats and their hankering after the bartender or a new drifter freshly come to herd cattle and the owner of same.

5-0 out of 5 stars Thrilling Sequel
Under the Gun is a great book!Gun Shy left us all wanting more of these great characters and this sequel delivers! The plot is good through out and this book is a true page turner.
5-0 out of 5 stars Review of "Under the Gun" by Cheri Rosenberg
In the second gripping police drama in Lori L. Lake's Gun series, "Under the Gun" delightfully picks up where "Gun Shy" left off and sets the stage for the third novel, "Have Gun We'll Travel." Once you make the acquaintance of Officer Desiree (Dez) Reilly and her partner and lover Rookie Officer Jaylynn (Jay) Savage, you won't be able to get enough of this dynamic duo. The two cops are as different as night and day in appearance and personality. Always the macho cop, Dez, affectionately referred to as "tall, dark, and dangerous," maintains a tough impenetrable shell and demeanor to hide her fears. "[Jaylynn] liked the fact that there was a defensive fortress around her taciturn partner, but that the tall cop had let her find the few chinks in the armor so that she had free access to come and go as she pleased" (p. 378). Dez contains her emotions until the breaking point, while Jay is not embarrassed or afraid to show her feelings. "It occurred to [Dez] that one major thing she liked about Jaylynn was how alive she was. She took on life with zest, whether she was investigating a crime, talking on the phone, eating something tasty, making love, or crying at a sad movie" (p. 271).
5-0 out of 5 stars A sequel as fine as "Gun Shy"
A continuation of her excellent first novel and just as good. Along with all of the romance and relationship angst and suspense and a well relayed tactile sense for her setting (I would actually get cold at times while reading from her description of the environment) the thing I liked most about this novel was the presentation of an empathetic, funny, real, genuinely helpful shrink, if only they could all be as intelligent and insightful. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Reading Experience
Desert Sons and its sequel Into this World We're Thrown are excellent books. I was totally drawn into the two main characters, seeing what they saw, feeling what they felt, being in the desert with them, loving with them. These books are about budding Love and budding sexuality, self-discovery and growth, and struggling with "coming-out" (with being Gay) to themselves and to others. These books are about young people dealing with real life problems of mental health, coping, grief, anger, rejection, teenage suicide, sexual abuse, denial, and so on.The author quickly brought me into a desert town, connecting me with all of the characters. For a short while, I was able to replace my own traumatic teenage years, with the story spun by this author. The author has a good understanding of of how a young mind works and develops, and a deep understanding of what it is like growing-up gay. This is indeed "a great coming out and finding your way in the world book".I do not understand why anyone would describe the characters as superficial and staged, the dialog as corny, behavior which is unbelievable, and scenes as ridiculous.Teenagers do not always think and behave as you would expect in an adult. The opposing "thought verses behavior" is typical of a teenager, as well as confusion and uncertainty, lack of experience in handling problems, and self-centered behavior, all of which are part of growing-up.These characters are believable, the plot line is believable and true to real life. Some have complained about the quantity of sex in the books. But I felt that the tone and quantity of sex fit naturally into the basic truth of what the relationship would be like, given the parameters set by the author, and real life. This author paints vibrant and detailed descriptions, without being boring. The only disappointment I felt was when I got to "The End" and did not want the experience to end.If this story had been told in a ten book series, I would have gladly purchased them all.

5-0 out of 5 stars Sweet gay-teen story
I don't feel I missed a thing by reading the sequel first: it works as a stand-alone novel. The characters of Scott and Ryan deal with gossip, resentment, and more serious matters, such as the threat of violence and feeling excluded in a place they love.
1-0 out of 5 stars Book or Personal Fantacy?
I first read Desert Sons because of the high ratings, BIG MISTAKE. I had purchased Into This world We're thrown along with Desert Sons, and once I finished Dessert Sons, I left feeling disappointed deeply at how much of the book focused merely on sex, and how predictable the ending was.

4-0 out of 5 stars Normal Heart, Magnificent Play
While I consider myself a regular theatre-goer, I've always been aware of Kramer's plays and opinions, yet I haven't seen nor read either of these two plays. That changed this past weekend when I saw the revival of Normal Heart currently playing off-Broadway.This is a viscerally emotional piece of theatre and it makes one feel impassioned about what was going on in the world then and sheds a new light as to what's going on now in regards to the HIV/AIDS crisis. It's a must red if you don't have a chance to see it.

5-0 out of 5 stars The first important AIDS plays
These two plays, linked by the central character (author Larry Kramer's alter-ego), are among the most important documents related to AIDS and gay life in America in the 1980s.Although some found Kramer's activism too shrill in the 80s, he has been proven right about almost everything he foresaw in regards to AIDS.THE NORMAL HEART is a docu-drama in which Kramer sends his angry central character through all facets of American life where he discovers only apathy, failure, and cover-ups regarding the AIDS epidemic.THE DESTINY OF ME continues the story of the central character, taking a more personal approach to the AIDS epidemic and, particularly, provides a portrait of a man whose activism is driven as much by the epidemic as by his family and his personal life.THE NORMAL HEART is frequently produced and deserves to be, it appropriately raises the issues that continue to hamper the defeat of AIDS and the equality of gays and lesbians in American society.Playwright Tony Kushner's introduction is a valuable response to Kramer's significance.

1-0 out of 5 stars A Remorseless Slide
The Normal Heart was a brave attempt to confront the public with the AIDS epidemic at a time when it was decimating America's gay population and was still seen as a 'Gay Plague.' Unfortunately it was not well written enough to do more than mildly shock and disgust. Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Stories of Transformation
This book is a marvelously well selected collection of brief personal accounts of women who have loved both men and women, and who explain why they have felt more comfortable loving women.
5-0 out of 5 stars A Great Resource Full of Heartfelt Stories
This is a book I have been telling people about for the last couple months. As a writer of lesbian novels myself, I have been constantly surprised to discover how many women seem to be living double lives: wife and mother by day--secret, internet-accessing, coming-out lesbian by night. When women email me to confide and ask advice (which I feel inadequate at giving!), I refer them to this book knowing that the stories of the women in FROM WEDDED WIFE TO LESBIAN LIFE will give them hope and ideas.5-0 out of 5 stars This is a great help....
I was leaving my husband and starting a relationship with a woman when I met Deb Abbott online about 5 years ago. She told me about her book and I ran out to buy it. I saw myself in so many of the stories, and found that I wasn't the only one going through my situation. That relationship ended badly after 4 years, and I am now with a woman that is in the same position I was. I am re-reading Deb's book, and my girlfriend is also reading it. It is a bible to us. I can't thank Deb enough for writing this amazing book. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars I feel a bit cheated
The first two books gave me such a rush, and I did not feel it continued in this one. Maybe it is because the love is already established, hence the sexual tension between the two MC's is a lil less, although... well, do not want to give too much of the book away.
5-0 out of 5 stars Fabulous vampire mythos

1-0 out of 5 stars Deeply underwhelming compared to mroe recent work
Dennis Cooper, Closer (Grove, 1989)
5-0 out of 5 stars One of my all time favorites
The fact that it is told, mainly, from the perspective of those using this young man, who is looking for love and understanding after the death of his mother, makes every act of cruelty (the emotional even more so that the physical) stab at your heart so much more.4-0 out of 5 stars Wake-up call
"Closer", the first in a five book series of short novels about young gay men, is hypnotic and disturbing. Dennis Cooper's spare and elegant prose documents the lives of young people in our society who are constantly being exploited. With no support, no sense of themselves, and no real hope for anything better, the characters in this novel stumble toward bleak and sometimes gruesome fates. Dennis Cooper's novels are a wake-up call to a society that is traumatizing its children. ... Read more
