4-0 out of 5 stars A Great New Detective Emerges in Kimo
How unusual to find a novel that combines a poignant coming out story with a mystery. The author intertwines the mystery and detection elements of the story with the character of Kimo dealing with his long suppressed homosexuality so brilliantly that neither element takes centre stage but rather they combine to make for a truly wonderful story.
5-0 out of 5 stars Real and riveting
I'm not usually a reader of detective novels, but I loved this.
5-0 out of 5 stars Try this for a little Aloha spirit
I love reading books that have a strong sense of place - especially when that place is somewhere I know well - in this case, Honolulu, Hawaii. And Mahu not only get the place right, but everything else as well, including the introduction of a most original and charming main character: surfer guy cop Kimo.

5-0 out of 5 stars Loose Ends
Lt. L.A. Franco from the LAPD has been going to AA and attending meetings faithfully. As part of the program, she's decided to put closure to the death of her mother. She goes to NYC to visit her mother's grave only to find someone has been placing flowers and candles on her father's grave.
5-0 out of 5 stars Sometimes, Redemption Isn't an Option
LAPD Lieutenant L.A. Franco takes a weekend trip to New York on personal business. It shouldn't be hard to handle, just a quick trip to close the door on old memories. It was probably pointless to try tying up loose ends left dangling for a few decades, but still, she'd make the attempt.

Such a good book. It gives a different perspective on the Holocaust. It's a page turner...I couldn't put it down once I got past the first few pages. Everyone one should read!

5-0 out of 5 stars A Moving and Powerful True Account of Survival
A sodomy law had been on the German law books since 1871, a law known simply as Paragraph 175.Only a few people were ever sentenced under this obscure law until June of 1935 when, after the rise of Hitler and Nazism, the Nuremberg laws were enacted and the consequences of Paragraph 175 strengthened.Where once before, you had to be caught in the act of same sex relations, now simply receiving a letter or the spreading of idle gossip would have you sent to a concentration camp.4-0 out of 5 stars One Man's Story
Although short, this man's story could have benefitted from some thoughtful editing.Powerfully recounting his persecution at the hands of the Nazi regime, a full picture could have been painted had the author continued to tell its affects on the rest of his life AFTER World War II.An important book, no doubt, and definitely to be included in any Holocaust library. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars One of the Best Manga Series Out There!
This is my all time favorite series - even though it's only Shonen Ai it is the greatest Manga Series out there. The art is great and the story is funny and sweet in a lot of places, especially when it reveals how much the two main characters care for one another. It focuses on Dee Laytner and his persistence to get into the pants of his new partner Ryo Maclean, your average uke not knowing what to make of Dee's advances and Dee isn't the only one after Ryo, their new boss Berkley Rose is and Dee has his own admirers including one hyperactive jealous JJ, who hates Ryo. This is a must have series for any Yaoi or Shonen Ai Fan!

5-0 out of 5 stars Genius Work
Yes, that's right, genius work! A lot of people would completely disagree with me on this series (specifically friends) but I completely adore it. FAKE is freaking awesome and the fourth book isso cool. It's very touching and sweet and wow, there's a plot, how amazing is that? The action is absolutely amazing and I completely love how Matoh depictsNew York city life, although she's way off on the kinds of people who live here and how the buildings look and such, but she completely gets the perfect NY attitude. The fourth book deals with a mad bomber destroying Dee and Ryo's precinct...and the rest, you'll have to find out for yourselves. I would recommend this book to absolutely everyone if I could, but I suggest whoever reads it not be offended by boy on boy relationships or cursing. There's a lot of both. There's an OT rating on the book so that means there are certain scenes not suitable for anyone under the age of 16.

5-0 out of 5 stars Must own!
I kinda stumble onto this series, and man, I fell in love with it! I used to stay away from so-called "boys love" (yes, that's how it's called in Japan) stuff because many times those Japanese men were depicted in such a feminine way. But this series is totally refreshing for they are just "regular" men who are in love with another "regular" men, know what I mean? This is the Must Own series, not to just read at bookstore and leave 'em there. And, just because I am fluent in Japanese, I ordered the original version of the series and am to pick 'em up when I get to Japan, hehehe. I can't wait to read their original dialogues. I wish they make more videos/DVD's based on the stories, not only one :( But, take it! There are some CD's out, too, yay! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Fences Make Good Neighbors: A Cautionary Tale
In an age of ongoing national debate regarding same-sex marriage, Jay Quinn's "The Good Neighbor" is a thoughtful look at modern-day marriage and brings home the idea that non-traditional marriage isn't really so different from traditional marriage after all.
5-0 out of 5 stars an author who never fails to please.
Quinn, always perceptive and able to offer us characters of depth and complexity, has presented in "The Good Neighbor" a fascinating story of considerable maturity and acceptance. The principle characters are multi-dimensional and the plot goes places I had not expected. A book Quinn should be very proud of; a book I'd like to read for the first time, again.

4-0 out of 5 stars Interesting personal perspective
This is a most interesting, personal account of "how", "what", and some "why" a person has become what he is in the moment. The perspective is intensely genuine, as much as the author is capable. I found this a fascinating view into the life of a physical, although necessarily remote, personality and his attempts to deal with his own evolution. It seems that many of the other reviews(printed here) have approached the writing from their OWN perspective. I do not feel that that is valid and appreciate Mr. Shaw's revelations and insight into a whole world that is both limited and international. How delightful to find that these fantasy figures are also real people and have distinct and impressive talents beyond what most perceive as their "genre". Thank you Mr. Shaw.

3-0 out of 5 stars Missing Core
This book starts out in a fast and exciting pace, but halfway through one begins to wonder "where is it all going?" Aiden Shaw tells an incredible narrative in a comprehensive, easy to read, subtlety poetic form. However, it's void of any and all emotion.Even in scenes of breakdown or crying, all the reader is offered is the notion he was crying but in no way do we know how he was feeling, other than obviously sad.I thought by reading this I would get an exclusive look inside the life of a porn star and hustler, gain a perspective and a respect for a niche of men whose lifestyles aren't something I would approve or emulate. But all I really got was a tremendous list of what the author had done, disastrously, from point A to B to C.In the end, I'm glad to have read this book as it gives the feeling of being let in on a secret. However, the secret isn't all together too interesting and lacks that personal edge in which I was hoping to find.

5-0 out of 5 stars The truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth.
The person who wrote the main Amazon review clearly misunderstood Shaw. I hate to think they might influence other people, especially if they turn young readers away. Those inexperienced in Shaw's world can learn a lot from his brave portrayal of how not to live life. He does this not by preaching, but in a much more clever way, Shaw shows from the inside, the pit falls, the drug come-downs, and the ruined relationships that can coincide with the lifestyle he chose. My Undoing is refreshing, heartbreakingly honest, sincere, very funny, and most of all very well written. He puts himself on the line, while most prefer to hide behind pretense and propriety. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars An unlikely friendship, and some plot twists...
"Kiss of the Spider Woman" (1976) is a novel written by Manuel Puig (1932-1990), an Argentinian playwright, novelist and screenwriter. Its subject is controversial, as it delves upon themes such as sexual identity, violence and torture. All the same, I think reading it is worthwhile, as it is one of those books that tell a story that comes alive to the reader...
4-0 out of 5 stars Very visual gay "Thousand and One Nights"
Having watched the 1985 film starring William Hurt as Molina and Raul Julia as Valentin, I always intended to read the novel itself.Since this is the first Puig novel I've read I was astounded at how incredibly visual it is.The descriptions of faces, dresses, furniture, buildings and landscapes are so rich as to be almost unbearable. It did me make feel as if though I were partly blind, missing all these features that a writer like Puig conveys so well.

3-0 out of 5 stars All the King's Horses....
Growing up being picked on by a bully because he was 'smart,' Rigby of Pocatello, Idaho, led an upsetting and sad existence. The Sixties were hard on everyone but, most particularly, the sensitive, bright young students during the turmoil which was forced into their existence. No one could escape the horror. Not only was it devastating emotionally and mentally, but physically as well. Rigby had to endure numerous beatings by a dumb neighbor boy from a wealthy family.Money is not everything in this life.It won't buy you scruples, intelligence or morals. You may inherit the iltellect part from your parents, though it is possible to overcome poverty by appreciating good teachers at school and church. You have have to learn the ethical part of life from church, but watch out for the hypocrites who don't practice what they preach.
2-0 out of 5 stars "Punctuation Please!"
This is my second Spanbauer piece and overall the story was a good one. However, again I find his writing difficult to read as the guy doesn't believe in using "quotation marks" to set off the dialogue from the rest of the narration. Anyway, the book came highly recommended to me and I have to say I was rather disappointed.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Eyes Have It
The time is 1967. The place is Pocatello, Idaho. Rigby John Klusener is seventeen and leaving home to go to San Francisco. Tom Spanbauer's amazing fourth novel is the story of how this young man got to this place in his life. It has to do with his discovering his sexual feelings for men, the repressive Catholic church and his sad, harsh parents: his mother who spends far too much time on her knees in the local Catholic Church and a father, described as a "dry drunk" who only once in Rigby John's life has told him that he is proud of him. His only friends are Billie Cody with the Simone Signoret voice and a body far too voluptuous for rural Idaho 1967 standards and two Mexicans, Flaco and Acho, who work for his father. Then he meets George Serano, an Indian who lives in a log cabin with his grandmother not far from the Klusener property; and nothing is ever the same again.

5-0 out of 5 stars Really good

4-0 out of 5 stars Really steamy and unexpectedly deep
I bought this book off the shelf at the women's bookstore in Indiana while traveling, and I didn't look too close - just saw it was a Kallmaker so that was good enough for me. I was not expected so many steamy love scenes but I liked how the relationship between Brandy and the woman she secretly loved grew in unexpected ways.
5-0 out of 5 stars Erotic with a surprisingly intense story
This novel was a wonderful surprise. The book is marketed as a special line of novels "Bella After Dark' where the reader can expect a heavy erotic content (and this novel delivers wonderfully!!!).What I should have also expected (and got!) from this author was that it would come packaged in a terrific romance!

5-0 out of 5 stars How many of us have the same story?
I could have written this book but I didn't. It's taken me nearly 60 years to do what Andrew Tobias did in his 20s. How many "best little boys" are out there somewhere? The personal telling of his story - with delving soul-searching analysis and a great geal of humor - makes this a necessity for anyone who has lived a secret life and learned the accepted norms of society in the days when there were no real choices.

1-0 out of 5 stars Outdated and Overhyped
I bought this book because I thought I'd relate with the author's choice of the title "The Best Little Boy in the World".It took me less than fifty pages to realize that this was one of the worst books I've ever read.I can imagine that this book probably made a lot of difference when it was written, but today, I like to think we've progressed beyond the self-loathing, hatred of our own nature, and belittling of anyone that isn't like us to make this book less relevant for today. If I was recommending a book to a teenager to help them with their coming out process, I definitely would not recommend this book.I mean, come on, coming out is traumatic enough as it is, why would I want to make it worse by suggesting they read a book that will only put them down and make them feel worse about themselves?

1-0 out of 5 stars Self-loathing and superior
The other readers pegged it nicely: this book is self-loathing and superior. I read this when I was fourteen and, fourteen years later, found myself rereading it when I cleaned out my closet. I can't believe the arrogance and myopia of its WASP narrator. This book is internalized homophobia coupled with upper middle class snobbery at its worst. No doubt if the author was born in Nazi Germany sixty years ago, he would be Hitler's right hand man in his pink triangle quest to oppress homosexuals, or at least, those too limp wristed and "icky" for Andrew Tobias' liking. I'm aghast other readers are recommending his book for those coming out of the closet. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars What God Has Joined Together?: A Christian Case For Gay Marriage
This is an excellent book for those interested in learning about Gay Rights, Gay Marriage, and the alienation of Gays from traditional Religion.I was impressed with the chapter on What the Bible Does and Doesn't Say.It corrects mis-translations and points out that "the word Homosexuality is never used in Scripture" and didn't exist until the late 19th century. This is an a good resource for Bible students as well.

4-0 out of 5 stars Required Reading
This thoughtful and objective essay on a very "hot topic" should be required reading for all people who have something to say on the subject and especially policy makers and religious leaders.

5-0 out of 5 stars Terrific Book - needed!
Myers & Scanzoni have written a solid middle-ground book that builds lots of bridges. I hope that folks on different sides of the chasm will use this book to heal the terrible divide on gay marriage. Well written, easy to read, clear arguments, lots of information. This was a rich delight to read. Many leatherfolk and leather-curious will appreciate the content, accurately described by the chapter titles:"Getting Started in Leathersex", "Playing with Power and Sex", "Playing with Pain", "Playing with Pleasure", "Playing with Life and Death", "Leather Relationships", "Anatomy, Physiology, and First Aid" and "Leathersex and Spirituality".5-0 out of 5 stars Words for thought in the novice or experienced mind.
It can be difficult to balance between talking down to those who will feel they have a lot of experience in BDSM and tallking over those who are just learning about BDSM.This book does a good job of looking at a wide range of activities and interests, some of them for the first time, so that newbies can feel grounded while advanced kinky folk can mull over the concepts.Even though the book grew out of Bean's own journey toward becoming a master, I think the book can speak to anyone regardless of vanilla sexual orientation. However the book often reads more like it is geared toward the bottom or submissive partner in a relationship.

5-0 out of 5 stars an excellent enyclopedia for leathermen of all levels
Joseph Bean does an outstanding job of explaining, demystifying and clarifying many aspects of BDSM. It is from a gay male perspective and would probably not be of tremendous interest to hets or lesbians, but gay& bi/pansexual bio- & transmen should thoroughly enjoy Bean's work,no matter what their level of involvement in BDSM. He covers a wide varietyof topics ranging from leather to bondage, BDSM relationships to findingpartners, play parties to tools, etc. Plus Bean focuses on the importanctof the safe, sane & consensual principles. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Losing and Finding, Hurting and Loving
Imagine how much it must hurt to lose "THE ONE", the love of your life, your soul mate/life partner, the only man in your entire life who has shaken you to your very roots.Whether he dies or leaves you, how very much it must HURT.Unfortunately, our somewhat messed up hero, Dean, can't seem to avoid asking himself that question with every man he dates, leading him to fear desperately allowing himself to love someone. He lost his father as a boy, his mother while in college (to suicide, no less, imagine the guilt trip). Now his dearest friend in the world is dying of cancer (soon), and no boyfriend relationship has ever lasted very long.Poor Dean (actually, the pity party Dean kept heaping on himself got a bit tiresome after a while); he's had so many bad experiences with love that he has become "gun shy" about it.Then, bam, he meets the real love of his life: his true soul mate, THE ONE. and, sure enough, he eventually screws it all up in his race to run away from commitment.
5-0 out of 5 stars Charming, emotional story of gay friends-as-family
Dean Davenport is a thirtysomething gay man who feels like the "odd man out" in many faucets of his life.Without a father most of his life, he grew up as "trailer trash" in Jacksonville FL, with his single mom who later committed suicide when Dean went off to the state university. He had moved to Chicago with his best friend, Lonny, who was recently diagnosed with terminal condition lung cancer and moved back to live with his parents in Florida.Dean's previous job had him traveling a lot, and, although he found no shortage of guys who wanted to have sex with him, he never had the time, motivation or (he thought) ability to cultivate an actual one-on-one lasting relationship with anyone. He spent most of his free time as the "odd man" socializing with friends who were all couples.
5-0 out of 5 stars A nice story with a great ending
Great story. Very believable characters and situations. Yeah, as another reviewer said, the lead character is kind of a mess, but as the stofy unfolds and you realize what has happened to him, you can see why he acts the way he acts. The way everything comes together is beautiful. ... Read more

Editorial Review

E. Lynn Harris's track record as a bestselling novelist began here, with the story of Raymond Tyler, who, after years of questioning his sexual identity, finds himself torn between a married male lover and Nicole, the talented actress with whom he imagines himself able to spend the rest of his life. With a rich cast of supporting characters and emotionally wrenching plot twists, this debut proved popular enough in a self-published edition to catch the attention of Doubleday, which bought the rights to Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars invisible life: a novel
The book revealed to me a better understanding of the life and issues that confront the gay community in our American society

4-0 out of 5 stars Not Surprisingly Good
This was my first E. Lynn book and I'll confess it was because of what I heard about the subject matter. However, after reading for myself, I must say that I was captivated and thoroughly enjoyed the story. The author was able to get me to put my own personal feelings aside and get caught up in the realistic characters and storyline.Overall, the story had good flow. There were some minor spots where I wished for expansion on a character's emotion to get more understanding of their thoughts and/or feelings, but these spots were rare.I'm looking forward to picking up the next book. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Best anthology ever from this publisher...
This collection has 31 excellent stories -
5-0 out of 5 stars Feeling hot hot hot
This is a great anthology of truly diverse stories of lesbian erotica. Whether you're looking for a sweet romantic story, or something a bit (or a lot) kinkier, you're sure to find it here. One of the things I liked most about this book was the way it defined "first time." What is a first time? Is it the first time you have sex, or the first time you do something a bit different from the norm, or the first time you really let yourself be free? It's all of these things, and you'll find all these things represented in this book. Oh, and did I mention it's super-duper hot? Oh man, is it ever. ... Read more
