Editorial Review

When Daniel Mendelsohn was growing up, he "secretly imagined a place where all the people were other boys, and where all the stores and books and songs and movies and restaurants were by boys, about other boys. It would be a place where somehow the outside reality of the world that met your eyes and ears could finally be made to match the inner, hidden reality of what you knew yourself to be." And while he's found that place in Manhattan's Chelsea district, Mendelsohn has only one foot there--his other foot is in suburban New Jersey, where he acts as a masculine role model ("not exactly a father but a man who would be present") to the young son of a close friend. 1-0 out of 5 stars Dull and Pretentious
I'm always reluctant to write a nasty review as the reviewed book usually represents years of work for the author, but after suffering through this book I feel little sympathy. Mr. Mendelsohn wears his learning heavily and forces the weight on his innocent readers. The result is a bit like being forced to listen to the nasal blatherings of NPR's Michael Silverblatt for hours on end. Tedious, precious, and ultimately pointless, find a better use for your time.

3-0 out of 5 stars An academic who writes.... and writes....and
This is in some ways a notable book, but to be brief (if blunt)- Mendelsohn resembles the sort of person who doesn't realize that his smooth chatter isn't the most fascinating of disquistions for his auditors, and while not exactly a bore he isn't really even the most fascinating person in the room. I suppose my unenthusiastic reaction to the book is due to the rather clumsy unfolding of his ideas, and the gloss he imposes upon them in order to make them seem less "studied" yet still worthy of a genuine scholar. Sometimes he seems merely shallow, and as a child of priviledge he can make one grow tired of some his rants, such as the one about his ancestor's experiences prior to the Holocaust that was published in the NY Times magazine. This is a man who will never tire of writing about himself- not a bad thing, but economically priviledged people in the heart of the establishment never seem quite so dynamic as they believe us to believe them. Not a towering intellect nor quite a great stylist, he is nevertheless an entertaining writer and, in small pieces, a charming guide through his own life. If only he were a bit more interestingly "elusive"...

4-0 out of 5 stars SEDUCTIVE IN STYLE, CHALLENGING IN CONTENT
Perhaps the best thing I can say about this gorgeous and provocative book is that the author has crafted such movingly expressive arguments for his beliefs that even when I disagreed with those beliefs (for instance, his sense that sexual fidelity not worth making any personal sacrifices to maintain), I found myself taking a moment to question myself because I was so seduced by the beauty of his writing style that I almost felt compelled to agree with his content. This is a challenging work of art that, in the end, is less a broad social argument than one man's highly personal search for meaning in his own life. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars FACTUALLY IN ERROR
This book has gross errors. The woman's organization to which the author refers, is not what she made it out to be at all. What she actually attended was a church. The church invited a woman's ministryfrom else where in the country to come in and, both speak to the woman who attend the church and to do a teaching that might benefit woman as they seek employment. One reviewer accepted the author's perverse depiction and reaction to this event and called what really was a church as "a kaffeeklatsch of Christian women." Factual errors lead to the spreading of misinformation.5-0 out of 5 stars Provocative comparison of Religious Right and GLBT movements
Journalist Minkowitz goes undercover in different Religious Right groups (including the Promise Keepers and a Christian ladies' makeover seminar) and compares the desires she sees expressed in these groups to those she sees expressed among her own queer Left. She starts out seeing the Religious Right as enemies, and without changing her fundamental political views, she discovers that desires for connection, unconditional love, ecstasy, transcendence and transformation shape both of these opposing movements.A fascinating and interesting read!

1-0 out of 5 stars Ferocious Romance What My Encounters With the Right Wing Tau
I'm a member of one of the churches mentioned in this book.I am both perplexed and bewildered at how a church with Democratic ministers and congregates who voted repeatedly for President Clinton, can beconsidered "Right Wing" as the title of Ms. Minkowitz book would suggest. Therefore, at the outset, I realized that factually this book had problems.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Taps into the rage many of us felt growing up gay
I give this book 5 stars because of the intimate way in which I related to the story told here. I am not sure if a non-gay person would enjoy this quite as much, although I'm sure they would find it a worthwhile read. An important read, really, for straight and gay alike, because it explains by example how many of us felt violated and suppressed growing up in a society that had little tolerance for homosexuality. True, things have changed now, (though not enough), but this book details the state of growing up gay in 20th century America, and all that it entailed, written lavishly and flowingly.

4-0 out of 5 stars Not incredibly written, but profoundly important
As a twenty year old heterosexual male I found this book to very insightful. Monette illuminates both the sturglles and the shame of the homosexual community. I understood that it was hard to be gay, but this book has really helped to show me that this strife comes not from any inherent feeling attached to homosexuality but is a result instead of the prejudice and hate of the public, many of whom are supposed closet cases. I think that eventually America's continuing and blatant homophobia will be seen in the same light that we now view the cross burning and racial pogroms that dominated our contry for centuries. I wish you all strength and courage in your battle against these evil forces. Thank you.

5-0 out of 5 stars Important text in gay literature
Becoming a Man is the National Book Award winning memoir by Paul Monette, and was a landmark text in the literature associated with HIV. This book was, in many ways, the "little book that could," beating out such non-fiction heavyweights as David McCullough for the NBA.

5-0 out of 5 stars A reader is correct.It isn't about Aids.
Nor was it supposed to be a book about AIDS.Doty writes magnificently about the loss of a loved one, and the grief, in its many forms, that follows.
5-0 out of 5 stars A Gorgeous Exploration of Grief...and moving on
HEAVEN'S COAST is Mark Doty's his first prose book and a stirring and stunning memoir of his year of grief following the death of his lover of a dozen years Wally Roberts. With this book Doty has created a genuine masterpiece. It is a brilliant and accessible memoir conveying sorrow without clich and making sense of death through the beauty of writing.Death is no longer simply tragic but attains a variety of meanings that result in new levels of acceptance and understanding. His powerful emotional exactitude is culled from a brilliant mastery of language and a precise usage of metaphor. The combination transforms human loss into a redemptive art form.HEAVEN'S COAST is one of the most moving, beautiful, and poignant books to emerge on AIDS and more importantly on loss and grief.

1-0 out of 5 stars this book is not about AIDS
AIDS is a tragedy for the individual who experiences it, and for those who love them. But even if you have suffered at its hands, no-one should let you off the hook when you banalise it like this. 'Heaven's Coast' is over-written, self-important and embarrassing. I can only suppose that those who praise this writer's use of language come from the "more metaphors=more emotion" school of literature he favours, but like all self-indulgent writing, the effect of Doty's style is to cheat the genuine feeling behind it of a distinctive vocabulary, and to cheapen the suffering it depicts. There's something distasteful about watching someone using illness as an excuse to strike postures as hollow and self-regarding as this: 'Is this my work? To point at the world and say: look, see how darkly it sparkles?' From the precious rhetorical question to that faux-profound dark/light inversion, this is a typical instance of the book's extended masterclass in bad writing. If these were the outpourings of someone under the pressure of grief, they might be excusable, but Doty has worked hard to produce writing this overloaded: 'Wild, glimmering, watery horizons of sun, the watchful seals and shimmered flurries of snow seem to me to have more to do with the life of my spirit.' Even a teenager who'd just been taught about assonance and alliteration would balk at that sentence. This book, despite the horrors it sometimes documents, ends up reading like one long, shrill assertion of its own marvellous sensitivity, inviting the reader to congratulate themselves on their special ability to share in it. Sometimes bad writing is also morally questionable, and this is one of those times. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Unlikeable
Gore Vidal is pretty unlikeable and it's hard to finish a book about someone so unlikeable. He's a very cold fish. The first 2/3s of the book are depressing to read, the last 1/3 with some info on the Kennedys is more interesting but not worth the journey.

1-0 out of 5 stars Dry As Old Sticks
How could anyone who lived such an interesting life write such a boring book? (...)It's like the only point of this memoir is to score points off his contemporaries. And in so doing, further puff up his already inflated ego.
4-0 out of 5 stars Actually 4.5 Stars!!!!
A fine memoir from one of America's best writer. I have read and re-read this book and each time found something new that I haven't noticed before. Reading this is like being privy to some really good gossip. Like you are in the presence of Mr. Vidal himself, and he is telling you the most interesting stories of his life. When I first read this, I thought that there is no way a person could have known so many famous people that we call legends today. My favorite chapter is the one on Jack Kerouac and Allen Ginsburg. This is a must read for all Vidal fans. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Story of a Survivor
I bought this book because of the similarites between the author's life and my own. Both of us came out of repressive, abusive Fundamentalist Christianity, both of us served in the military, both of us battled substance abuse, and both of us are gay. This is one man's story, and it's the story of a survivor...in short, it's my story, and the story of countless others as well. There, but for the grace of God, go all of us.Rich Merritt came through the fire, as have so many of us.Well done, Rich! This is a helluva read.

5-0 out of 5 stars Can a straight guy enjoy this?
Yes.I picked up SOAGMPS as research for a novel I was writing that included a gay ex-Marine as one of the main characters. So I intially approached Merritt's memoir as 'required reading' with highlighter in hand... I didn't expect how quickly I'd get sucked into the story. The author's evolution from Bob Jones disciple to porn-Marine double life is expertly told, warts and all, with humor and a sharp mirror.By its end, you appreciate the journey and can chalk another point in the "we're all human" column.

4-0 out of 5 stars Truly Engaging
Rich writes in an engaging, friendly, and conversationalist manner that instantly draws one in. His life is neither typical nor atypical of anyone, but it has some clear features that probably speak to all of us, and because they do, we find his life compelling. Rich, of course, is our protagonist, and rigid orthodoxies are his antagonists. His cold, demanding, and insensitive mother, an indolent father, his hyper-fundamentalist Christian formation at Bob Jones' institutions, his pestiferous coming-out process, his vexing career as a gay military officer, his own inner need for conformity, approval, success, and affection, and his rebellion by sabotaging his own self-interests for lack of self-confidence and self-esteem. This dynamic is hardly uncommon to anyone, but it seems fairly common among gay men. That it occurs should not surprise us! Because many of these features are slightly tinged, makes the reading that more salacious and interesting. But this is a frank and honest apologia, not a porn biopic.

4-0 out of 5 stars A fantastic, emotional, page-turning read.
READ THIS BOOK!You don't have to be a transsexual, homosexual, male, or female to get a lot out of this book.I'm a married heterosexual female and read this book with an open mind, and am so glad I did so.Kholsa's transition from a female body to a male one that matched his male brain offers insights on the societal and biological constructs of gender and how our bodies are hard-wired to think and behave in certain ways by our hormones, our sociology, and so many other things. The fact that Kholsa has experienced both sides can help you learn more about yourself and the opposite sex than you ever thought possible.
3-0 out of 5 stars Living in and through his body
Dhillon Khosla, in his book, Both Sides Now, offers readers an intimate chronicling through which he presents his bodily transformations from female to male. His chapters are broken down by the month and range from July 1997 (when Khosla is twenty-eight years old) to November 1999, moving readers through various steps in his transitions as a transsexual man.
5-0 out of 5 stars One great read
This is much more than a story about a man born in a woman's body who then went through life threatening surgery and alot of sole searching to become the person he is today. It is also a study in determination and perserverance.I saw Dhillon Khosla on the View and immediately bought his book.I could not believe that he was born a woman. When I received his book I read it through in one night (something new for me) because I had to know the whole story. While this book will interest those who feel they too are trapped in the wrong body,it is also the story of an incredible journey full of sandtraps and brick walls. The intimate story is told with intellectual honesty and is an excellent read. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars You will never forget this book
I started this book with some trepidation, having read the chapter titles first (among which are Mother, Father, Biopsy, Connection, Phobia, Wedding, Diary, Artist, Gossip, Istanbul, Change, Aunts, Parting). Now that I have been carried on the fantastic ride that this book offers, the chapter titles make perfect sense. The chapters take the reader through the author's astounding first 23 years of life and gamut of emotions, beginning with the day he was adopted by a fascinating couple. As a result, the book is impossible to stop thinking about during the day.
5-0 out of 5 stars Heartbreaking and inspiring
I read this book from beginning to end non-stop. Bazhe had amazing courage and strength in the face of many terrible adversities -- especially at such a young age. I think the traumatic experiences he underwent would transform many people into sociopaths, but they have transformed Bahze into a poet and an artist and a beautiful person.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must Read
"Damages" is an incredible book by a very talented author, and should not be missed.Bazhe's memoir of the first act of his life addresses adoption, sexual abuse, the fall of Yugoslavia, terminal illness, hypocrisy, the search for freedom and love (and an understanding of one's self), but the essence of the book is a study of "family" in its various permutations -- adoptive parents and relatives, lovers, the "aunts" of Belgrade, and his birth mother, Mila. Each of these characters influences Bazhe in ways both good and evil, yet he never loses his determination, his strength or his sense of self-worth.It is those characteristics that allow Bazhe to persevere and, one hopes, finally obtain the freedoms for which he has so valiantly struggled.Such a raw and honest telling of the story of one's own life is rare, and for that Bazhe should be commended -- he is a fantastic storyteller.Like Mila, the reader seems to be seated in a room with Bazhe as he slowly peels away the multiple layers of experience that have made him the man that he is, and just like her, this reader had an overwhelming desire to reach out and hold Bazhe and tell him that he has done remarkable things and should be very proud of his battles and accomplishments.I hope he has found, in the second act of his life, the freedom and happiness he so desperately sought, and that he will someday share that story as well. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A Charmed Couple: A Charming Book
A Charmed Couple introduced me to Walter and Matilda Gay, American expatriates in France in the late 19th and early 20th century. Walter Gay was a painter, primarily of interiors of chateaus and grand houses of France and America. Matilda was a society hostess and dedicated diarist. Both were unknown to me before I received this book as a gift (and a very fine gift it makes, too). The Gays were friends with important artists, writers and political figures, as well as English and French aristrocrats and many wealthy, international socialites. Quoting often from Matilda Gay's diary with its witty, observant and often acerbic comments on people she knew, author William Rieder gives brief, anecdotal accounts of the Gays' friendships with a diverse group that included writers Henry James and Edith Wharton, the artist John Singer Sargent, Robert and Mildred Bliss (who later created a beautiful home and garden at Dumbarton Oaks in Washington, D.C.), Henry Clay Frick and his daughter Helen (whose house is preserved as the Frick Collection in New York City). The text is interesting and witty, the reproductions of Walter Gay's paintings of beautiful rooms and views are delightful, and the book design is attractive.A Charmed Couple, as a whole, is a lovely, frothy concoction -- fun to read and to look at.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Charmed Couple
Mr. Rieder has fashioned a fascinating account, both artistically and sociologically, about a farily obscure artist and his wife. As world travellers they both entertained and were feted by John Singer Sargent, Edith Wharton, Henry James, Elsie de Woolfe, Henry Frick Clay and an entire bouquet of royalty. They seem to have helped define the great Golden Years before the First World War changed everything. Mr. Rieder has effortlessly captured this with both wit and insight. It's handsomely produced with many photographs and images of Gay's work. I've found it to be a perfect gift item. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A very moving story.
Damned good book. Damned, damned, damned good book. As I read it, I made sure to turn my empathy levels to maximum and I felt every high and low Jeff McGowan did. Although I have never been in the military, most of what he went through still paralelled my life before I came out of the closet.
5-0 out of 5 stars Well worth reading!
I really enjoyed reading this book and admire the author's courage and tenacity. Definitely highly recommend this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Powerful and Painful
Well-written, engaging memoir of a dedicated soldier torn between love and service to country and the enormous obstacle to that service, known as "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" (DADT). Mcgowan's inner turmoil over his commitment to military service and his awareness of homosexual desire is wrenching. Such existential dilemmas are often difficult to imagine, because sexual identity so easily trumps professional ones. But Mcgowan saw his military identity just as vividly as he saw his gay one to the point of suppressing the latter for the former. I think many of us perceive one's sexual persona as paramount, that it's often difficult to empathize with those who would compromise it for any reason, much less for a military career in which others' hostility to that persona can be virulent. That a dilemma could arise seems challenging enough, but clearly it did for Mcgowan, and the conflict is palpable throughout the book. (I have a new appreciation for gays in the priesthood.)

5-0 out of 5 stars In Memory of Pierre Seel (1923-2005)
Pierre Seel, Outspoken Gay Concentration
4-0 out of 5 stars A very moving book that needs to be read widely.
Pierre Seel's memoirs of being detained in a Nazi concentration camp because he was homosexual is a powerfull and well documented treatise on what happend to gays during the Nazi regime. I'd give it five stars exceptthat the last half of the book focuses on the trouble he faced as a gay manin post-war France in trying to gain compensation from the government forhis experience, something other camp survivors received. Maybe that's theeditor in me. That information is important to the book, but Seel failed inmy view to give that portion of the book the same power he gave to thefirst two-thirds. Either way, this is a book people need to read. It addsto the evidence to show that the tripe others publish in an attempt to showthat gays and Nazis were somehow in bed together is nothing more than morereactionary rhetoric designed to work your emotions. Because if you examinethe evidence, you soon find that such a treatise is severely lacking. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A truly touching portrait...
Judd Winick's "Pedro and Me" does what the most highly regarded graphic novels do-it captures a particular moment in time and depicts the human condition like the best in literature and film do, much like art spiegelman's acclaimed "Maus," another highly regarded story told in sequential art.
5-0 out of 5 stars a great book!
I barely remembered the show real world when pedro was on.I happened to find this book in a library when I was waiting for the bus.I read this book in one sitting. It is a beautiful story about Pedro. It also tells a lot about the real world experience.I do think that this book should be read by all teenage students for the way it was written. It is written in a cartoon style..........anyone could read it, it really has a lot of information about aids prevention with out getting all preachy. When I finished reading this book , I felt emotionally drained.I really wish I could have met Pedro.
5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderfully haunting..
I have never seen 'The Real World', nor had I heard of Pedro. I merely picked this book up on a whim, and discovered an amazing tale of friendship, both beautifully drawn and exceptionally realised. Brief, but hard to forget.

5-0 out of 5 stars Educational and Inspirational
I currently have a class with Gumby (Soc of Sport @ UCI), and reading this book was one of the requirements. However, it wasn't just another class textbook--in addition to being educational, it was extremely inspiring.I have not been exposed to many gays or lesbians (maybe a few lesbians and bisexuals here and there, but I was never close to them), in fact, I have been exposed to more conservative, anti-homosexual, and heterosexist views for most of my life, so many of the things Gumby brought up in his book were new to me.For instance, I never really thought about how hard it must be not just for a person to come "out of the closet" but how it would affect his close ones.Though I'm not close to Gumby, I learned a little more about how and why he thinks certain ways, mainly due to his treatment and experiences before and after "coming out".In addition to learning about issues on homosexuality, heterosexism, and how hegemonic masculinity can be, I learned more about how these issues are dealt with in the school administrative and sports arena through Gumby's experience. If you are interested in these sociological issues, or just want inspirational/motivational support in coming out as a homosexual, then READ THIS BOOK!It has definitely changed my view on homosexuality forever.

4-0 out of 5 stars Breaks the Ribbon
I am no fan of athletics or stories about same, but I found Eric Anderson's book an engaging memoir. He keeps the whining down to a minimum and provides instead a truly inspirational piece about an individual who would just not give up on attaining his goals, no matter what obstacles were strewn in his way.Sometimes I found myself skeptical at how easily and immediately accepting his friends, family, colleagues and students were of his homosexuality, but I am inclined to give Anderson the benefit of the doubt. He strikes me as an honest man.His life could certainly serve as some sort of model for young folks of all and any persuasions or predilections: perseverence is the key to success; hard work is unavoidable.5-0 out of 5 stars Trailblazing Through Orthodoxy

5-0 out of 5 stars Satisfaction
There is something for every woman is this book. rather you're lesbian, bisexual, or heterosexual. it is one of my all time favorites. I was really struggling with my sexuality when i came across this book. It helped me to understand that i wasn't alone out there, and that every women deserves satisfaction sexually just as men do in our society today.

4-0 out of 5 stars on being different
i'm now more than halfway thru "A Woman Like That:Lesbian and Bisexual Writers Tell Their Coming Out Stories".i had bought it expecting (and hoping) it to be racy.but, there's very little raciness in it.

5-0 out of 5 stars truly remarkable...
I really enjoyed this book. I have read all of E. Lynn's work and by far this was the best. I cried, laughed and got upset several while reading this book. Truly it was remarkable.

4-0 out of 5 stars My first E. Lynn book...
It was interesting. I've always heard people talking about his books but never got around to reading one. I wanted to read this particular one because I thought that because it was his memoir it would be a good introduction to his writing. After reading it I'm a little depressed; not the subject matter that I was expecting. Overall the book was well written, informative, and interesting. However, I don't think that I will be reading anymore of his books; this one didn't put me into the "fan" frame of mind like some other authors' work has.

4-0 out of 5 stars What Becomes of the Brokenhearted
Being a big fan of E. Lynn Harris, I was very interested in getting to know him on a personal level. His novels have amused, intrigued and left his fans hungry and yearning for more.
