5-0 out of 5 stars A long needed look at Gay Spirituality
At long last someone has done a study of gay spirituality!Soul and Spirituality among gay men are increasingly becoming much stronger and deeper as we approach the millenium and the Age of Aquarius.Whenovercoming difficulties of the modern age such as homophobia and thestigmatisation of the AIDS epidemic, gay men such as myself have started tolook inside themselves for the fulfilment that lacks in society, and thisbook is one of very few available that studies the many different aspectsof this new spritiuality. The interview format takes a bit of getting usedto at first, but from the start the writing has a conversational stylewhich makes it much easier to read, and more difficult to put down! I wouldhighly recommend this for any gay man seeking to discover his truespirituality in whatever form- it truly is a brilliant book!

4-0 out of 5 stars A great collection of essays!
This book is a great resource for a gay male looking for viewpoints on sexuality, spirituality, and morality. The various essays included are mostly in interview form, and make it feel that you are"listening" into a conversation. In this indirect eavesdropping, you find a wealth of viewpoints and guidance on issues that havetraditionally plagued many gay men -- sex, self-esteem, and sense ofpurpose in society. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Show's yet another reason for needing gay marriage
GREAT story.I am not a sports fan, but couldn't put the book down once I started to read it.
4-0 out of 5 stars A solid base hit!
Billy Bean played for 3 major league baseball teams (the Dodgers, Tigers and Padres). He was never a star in the majors, but he had a decent career.Would Bean have a story to tell if he was not gay?Maybe, because it seems everyone writes an autobiography these days. This isn't just the story of a gay man. This is the story of a man struggling to discover who he really is.
4-0 out of 5 stars A baeball education and a good story.
I am not a baseball fan.I read a review of this book and there was just something that intrigued me about the story.I was prepared to be disappointed but, once I started, I couldn't stop turning the pages to see how all this was going to work out.Of course it was interesting to read Billy's take on the gay part of the story but, I think even with that removed from the picture, this is a moving story of a boy's dream and his struggles to achieve it.It certainly was a most pleasant sojourn into the baseball business and the life of a ballplayer. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Too much gay culture, too little opera
This book is well-written, which is why I give it 3 stars; but much of it is well-written nonsense, which is why I give it only 3 stars.
4-0 out of 5 stars Me LikEy..
Me likey the book, me likey Gays in Opera cause no one writes about (see "Opera: The Undoing of Women; Catherine Clement) them. And Opera, Callas singing Delibes Laksme is good. It's good someone talks about how Gays like Opera, otherwise straight corporate society would think they were the only cultured ones,..Yep, Me like.

4-0 out of 5 stars Theory on a High Note
The Queen's Throat is an insightful and animated blend of knowledge and intuition exploring the connections and overlappings of homosexuality and opera, arriving at a number of intriguing conclusions. The core of opera's queerness is dismantled and reassembled with a reflective and lyrical precision that defies typical essay format and approach. This is a brilliant monologue -- a very entertaining brainstorm which even includes silly graphics. It's smart, funny, personal, and spirited and even of interest for the operatically challenged. In fact, I bet big opera fans would give this a five. ... Read more

Editorial Review

A 1996 nominee for the National Book Critics Circle Award, this perceptive, meticulously researched biography rescues from obscurity the gifted Billy Strayhorn (1915-67), Duke Ellington's arranger and composer of many popular Ellington Orchestra tunes, including "Take the `A' Train." Worshipped by jazz aficionados as the creative power behind the Ellington throne, Strayhorn preferred to live quietly while his friend/boss took the bows. In clear prose and with careful attention to nuance, David Hajdu documents Strayhorn's contributions to the Ellington magic and delineates an attractive personality who found good in almost everyone he met. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Heavy Metal
I enjoyed this book from the point of view of a white football fan looking in from the outside on the experiences of a black brotha coping with the challenge of being gay. But I was rather turned off by the many expletives on almost every page in the later chapters, as he described his struggles with alcohol, drugs, and the underground gay culture. I live on a Caribbean Island where I hear the same expletives every day, so I can appreciate the reality of "the life" but it was a bit off-putting for the general reader. Still I came away praying for Ray, that he will be able to stay on the wagon and not relapse from his addictions, and also hoping that he will sometime find a partner that he can rely on and relate to.

5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing story, lyrically written
This is my idea of how a memoir ought to be written: honest, engaging, revealing, but not at all self obsessed. At the heart of the story is a great loss: the death of the author's parents when she was nineteen, but surrounding that core is a story of a young woman in Spain. It evokes the place and time, it convinces on many levels, and I couldn't put it down. I plan to read it again...

4-0 out of 5 stars Adrift on land
Winner of a Lambda Literary Award, Barrington's memoir chronicles the years after the deaths of her parents during a cruise ship tragedy. Running from her grief, as well as her emerging desires for women, Barrington travels to Spain to work as a tour guide for a winery. There, she submerges herself in her work and in nightly encounters with various men. It's not until many years pass, that Barrington is able to grapple with her grief and visit her parents' grave in Gibraltar. This autobiography is about the struggle to overcome past tragedies and pain, and to finally embrace the full emotional range of one's self in the journey to wholeness. I was rather enchanted with Barrington's style, yet I felt she didn't delve into the depths as much as the memoir warranted. She does address this in the narrative, where she remarks on how people reacted upon hearing of the deaths of her parents at sea. Everyone does deal with tragedy in different ways, and who's to say which is more appropriate?

5-0 out of 5 stars A gorgeous, powerful read
This book is cause for celebration. Judith Barrington writes with refreshing honesty and emotion, and she doesn't take any shortcuts or easy-outs when it comes to dealing with grief, sexuality, and growing up.I came away from "Lifesaving" breathless and moved.A deeply compelling story, it dwells in grief at the same time that itcelebrates the life and growth found within it.The writing is subtle and raw. This book prompted me to take up my pen and write again. An underappreciated, relatively unknown gem that I hope more people discover. ... I admire Leslie Feinberg a great deal. Hir life hasn't been easy, but ze's managed to handle herself like a real gentlewo|man.5-0 out of 5 stars Minnie Bruce the Revolutionary In-Between Writer
And you thought this text was about lovers who traverse gender and sexual dimensions of US culture? Since it's such a rich read, take another look at the revolutionary's socialist political cultural criticism. Minnie Bruce is doing a Lao Tzu impression to achieve a socio-cultural damnation of the US--"doing without doing." With lovers, gorgeous sexual scenes, deep intimacy in the foreground of her tiny "chapters"/stories, my favorite in-between writer is providing an understated socialist feminist critique. It is a genre-crossed book. 5-0 out of 5 stars If all this is new to you, open the door

Editorial Review

Billy Tipton was a jazz performer who played in clubs throughout the Midwest for nearly 50 years. Tipton never made the big time as a musician and ended up working as a booking agent in Spokane, Washington. Only with Tipton's death in 1989 was it revealed that the five-times-married father to three boys was biologically female. Diane Wood Middlebrook's biography describes the transformation of Dorothy Tipton, a white Oklahoman who was not allowed to play jazz because she was a girl, into Billy Tipton, a male pianist and bandleader. The author traces the life ofthis itinerant jazz musician over several decades and through changing constructions of gender.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Good information, incorrect analysis
I couldn't tell if the author was ignorant of transgenders, or just prejudiced against the idea of anyone being transgender. While one might cross dress to be able to enter a profession reserved for only one gender, one doesn't live their entire life as the opposite gender just for that reason. All of what we know of Billy Tipton points to him being transgender, and to give equal weight to other theories (lesbian, cross dresser for his job) shows an ignorance of transgenderism.
4-0 out of 5 stars An impressive biography that overcomes scanty documentation
Diane Middlebrook has been blessed with such a fascinating subject for this biography that it would be a poor writer indeed who sapped the story of its interest. Yet the author faces a daunting challenge because so little documentary evidence remains concerning the life of Dorothy/Billy Tipton, especially for the early years. Fortunately, Middlebrook is up to the task, and where she can't provide content she supplies invaluable context for the life of a locally famous jazz singer now known less for his musical talent than for a closeted, transgendered (and, I would argue, brave) life.
5-0 out of 5 stars Who Are You?
It's safe to say that there is another side to most of us. No matter who you are, or how big or little it is, or how serious. There is something there that we don't tell others. But the lies and deception in this book from the man/woman it comes from, top it all. The book details the life of respected jazz musician, Billy Lee Tipton. A bright, funny, good natured and handsome young man, who wanted nothing more than to play the music he loved and to have a career doing it. Sounds nice, right?. Billy was born Dorothy Tipton. A she. From the age of 19 up until his death at the age of 74 in 1989, Dorothy had lived as a man. Billy. The writer of this fine and incredible biography, Diane Wood Middlebrook, can't easily answer most of the questions that anyone who knows the story or reads the book will want to know. Why?. Mainly because there is no real way of knowing. Billy Tipton was an incredible mystery. A mystery that the man himself only had the answers too, and he kept them with him when he went to the grave. Only Billy knows why he did it, and he never let it out. Sure, there were some who kind of had an idea along the way, and some who did know, but nothing came of it. The questions his story raise can only be met with ideas and suggestions of the author, and our own viewpoint. The book goes into detail how this man lived and worked. The details of the gigs he would play around the country. The most interesting thing here is that he was able to have five wives!. And according to them, they never knew anything. I have always known the story and it would be appealing and interesting no matter what, but I have a strong connection to it since Billy spent the last 26 or 27 years of his life here in my hometown. Billy's sexuality is the most mysterious. He went for real women, so was she really a lesbian?. What were her thoughts and wants?. No one knows. And why did she do it?. Some say that because back when she was growing up, women were in the background. Men up front. Women had their parts, and the men went off and did the work. There were some women who may of been in groups and what not, but a lot of them were background singers. Some lucky few broke thru the barriers and had solo careers. So did Billy do it so he could actually get a break in the business he wanted in to play the music he loved?. Who knows. It's an odd and infuriating tale since Billy is still a gigantic question mark at the end just as much as he was in the beginning. Middlebrook writes with such a deep understanding and respect for Tipton, and she makes it such an absorbing and compelling read. You could read the whole thing in one day if you wanted too. It's that good. From his stormy upbringing, to his bizarre adult and senior life, Middlebrook creates a brilliant book about a most peculiar and sensational person. A must read. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars A sociocultural minefield, with potential and flaws...
Provocative, as a descriptive term, doesn't begin to do justice to this maddening, horrifying, tittilating, exceptionally conflicted literary creation.Few writers have been brave enough to venture into this particular minefield; and for that Gawthrop is to be commended.
4-0 out of 5 stars Interesting balance of genres make it an enjoyable read
Part autobiography, part titillating sex novel, part scholarly treatise, "The Rice Queen Diaries: A Memoir" deals with a subject that is obviously very close to the heart of the author:being a gay white male attracted primarily to young-looking Asian men, which is a "rice queen" in gay slang.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fresh, Original Stories
Vestal McIntyre has written eight very fine stories here, everyone of which is unique and original. The plots are as different as the kidnapping by teenage hoodlums of a busboy wearing a kangaroo suit to lure customers to the restaurant where he is employed to a man, no longer in love with his very successful wife, who hires a prostitute to have sex with him while driving his Mercedes through an automatic carwash. Mr. McIntyre is very wonderful with words and can do a lot with a little: "She looked at his tired gray eyes and lipless mouth. He had a habit of chewing on the inside of his cheeks." Another example: "The cousins slept scattered around the downstairs like shoes on the floor of a messy closet". And drinking brandy is like "swallowing candlelight."
5-0 out of 5 stars SHARP, FUNNY, WONDERFUL
This collection offers the kind of rewarding experience readers desire and so seldom get.The story "Sahara," about the mistaken-identity kidnapping of a boy wearing a kangaroo costume, is just one example of how original, touching, and wildly entertaining this book is.Vestal McIntyre is a major talent, and YOU ARE NOT THE ONE is one of the sharpest, funniest and most well-crafted story collections I've ever read.I highly recommend it.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best short story collections I have read all year
Vestal McIntyre has created the most eccentric characters and bizarre situations in this collection of darkly funny short stories. He writes about things that people could relate to, yet he adds a touch of peculiar situations that make the stories dark and compelling at the same time. Some stories were written in second-person narrative and that gave the stories a more unique voice. My favorite story is "ONJ.com."I like to think of the aforementioned story as Will and Grace with a twist.I also loved "Nightwalking," "Disability," and "Binge."I enjoyed entering McIntyre's world with this fascinating collection and I look forward to reading more of his stuff in the future. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A fabulous reading
This book is probably the best book on how to ground and use Foucault in relation to contemporary social movement politics - an incredibly important rejoinder to the depoliticized, sterile versions of Foucault that do the rounds today in British sociology departments etc.Halperin is one of the best (and certainly most entertaining) readers of the History of SexualityVols 2 & 3.Do yourself a favour & get it!

5-0 out of 5 stars An Outstanding Classic!
This is the best book I have ever read on Foucault, no contest--though one must be clear that Halperin is EXPLICITLY NOT attempting any general and comprehensive explanation of Foucault's life work and thought, which Halperin makes quite clear, though there seems to be some confusion below regarding this point. In fact, the tone of some of the reviews only serve as a demonstration of some of Halperin's points.
5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Book!
I thought Halperin's book was great. What I can't believe is the reaction his book has gotten from the other reviewers. You would think that of all people Foucault fans would not be homophobic or heterosexist -- and yet this is common with heterosexuals interested in Foucault. They often say, "It's what he said that is important, not what he was." As if there were a difference, which, of course, there is not. Straight people often attempt to colonize gay thinkers (Wittegnstein, for example), and the first thing they do is hide from others the sexual orientation of these thinkers as much as they can. Then, when someone mentions how awful gay people are based on what he or she saw from skewed footage of a Pride parade on the news, do these colonists ever say, "Well, not all gay people are silly and frivolous: look at Foucault, look at Wittgenstein, look at Alan Turing, and a whole host of other famous minds." No, they keep quite about all that and nod their heads in agreement. Tisk. Tisk. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Homosexuality is not "wrong" in the Bible.....
Although my heart goes out to this mother and the reviewer, Mary Mother God's Servant, the latter is simply wrong in stating that the Bible and God condemns homosexuality. There are several scholars and many books that will give you the true translation of the Bible based on the culture and what it meant at the time.A good book to start with is: What the Bible Really Says about Homosexuality, by Daniel Helminiak. The mother in this story is indeed a very courageous woman to do what she has done, and don't worry, your son is in heaven, and I'm sure he understands and forgives you.

5-0 out of 5 stars For "jolie1015"
The only "pain in homosexuality" is caused by those who insist on saying it is a "lifestyle", "a sin", "shameful". It is things like that which result in making life painful for gay people, particularly when said by parents to a child. How would you feel if your parents had brought you up telling you day after day that the way you feel or act is "wrong, sinful, an abomination"? Would that not hurt you? Well, that's why kids kill themselves, they can't deal with being told how horrible they are. And even if they don't take that final step, many are scarred for life.
5-0 out of 5 stars Gut Wrenching, Could not put it down
As soon as a child comes out to their parents this book should become required reading for the parents. It shows the struggles of a boy between his religion, family and his own sexuality. Somehow the family considered themselves the same as their religion and forgot their role as parent and unconditional love. The son paid for it from his agony and eventual suicide. This book will rip at you, it is an emotional read. It is a necessary read. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book Scott..wish I'd met you..
I love this book so much, where to begin. First, Scott O'hara was an original.Just from his writing, which is the only way I have to know him,he was a multifaceted and complicated guy. His writing speaks volumes about his love for freedom, both freedom to do what he wanted, and freedom from the more repressive elements of gay culture.5-0 out of 5 stars The Last Words of Scott O'Hara
And witty, wise and wonderful words they are too. This has to be the most overlooked gay nonfiction title of the year. The cover and title aren't astitillating as the first volume of his memoirs,"Autopornography," but the writing's better. Scott shares with usthe story behind STEAM magzine, themessy messy inside dirt on"Making Porn" (the play and movie inspired by his own porn starcareer), and his thoughts on approaching death. Typical of Scott, though,it's anything but depressing or maudlin. A sexy, smart, funny andinimitably shocking read from a gay icon who is sorely missed. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Insight into the relationship between two remarkable people
How wonderful to read about the emotions of what is sometimes considered to be "deviant" love.I believe they would each be honored to know that their true relationship is public and, for the most part, thatpeople are touched by their genuine caring for each other.I highlyrecommend this book, especially for those people who find it hard tounderstand relationships between same-sex couples.

5-0 out of 5 stars Brilliant!
What a hoot!Kay Turner has done it again, producing a book that's both entertaining and eye-opening -- a delightful-as-usual combination of the scholarly and hilarious. Brava! A wonderful gift for and/or from yergirlfriend.

5-0 out of 5 stars Gertrude and Alice Get Real!
Just imagine having your love notes found, analyzed and published for the world to see? Well, this is it. One of the world's most famous and iconic couples' lyrical notes to each other are here for all to share. Should ithave been done? Some may say 'no', but considering the fact that they areby Stein, one of the most well-known, unread writers in history, andToklas, whose place in history largely hinges on her hashish fudge, I'd say'why not?' These ladies have long been used to public curiosity andscrutiny and became household names during their 1934-35 visit to the US.The introductory essay alone, though scholarl
